Join the Space Corps. Journey to the stars. Meet aliens—and then vaporize them. A news journalist arrested for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, Liv Reyes now serves as a war correspondent in a war where anyone can be drafted and everyone is expendable.
It's a war we're losing. Badly.
Outmatched, outsmarted, and outmaneuvered—humanity is running out of options when it comes to the Raptors. They destroy anything and anyone we send their way.
Our last line of defense never even made it through basic training.
Liv catches a ride on a transport filled with five hundred soldiers in cryosleep, but Raptor space is dangerous. Half of all ships deployed are destroyed before ever reaching the front lines.
Relentlessly pursued by the vicious alien enemy, Liv arrives at the aftermath of a brutal space battle and unearths a story that is the key to saving humanity from the Raptors once and for all.
But first... she must survive the trip...
Join the fight for humanity in the start of this new alien invasion military sci-fi series by Rachel Aukes, bestselling author of Flight of the Javelin and Space Troopers. The enemy is vicious. Hope seems lost. But a few brave heroes can turn the tide. Humanity will prevail!
Rachel Aukes is the bestselling author of over forty books, including 100 Days in Deadland, which made Suspense Magazine’s Best of the Year list. She writes in a number of genres, including science fiction, fantasy, horror, thriller, and more. Her series includes Waymaker Wars, Space Troopers, Flight of the Javelin, Fringe, Deadland Saga, Colliding Worlds, and Guardians of the Seven Seals. Her novels have repeatedly been Amazon Top 100 bestsellers and #1 bestsellers in Horror, Post-Apocalyptic, Space Fleet, Space Marine, Galactic Empire, Colonization, Alien Invasion, and Cyberpunk. When not writing, Rachel can be found flying old airplanes with an incredibly spoiled dog over the Iowa countryside.
Survival took on a whole new meaning when author Rachel Aukes wrote Expendable, the first book in a new series called Redline Corps. For journalist Liv Reyes it was all about survival when joining the Space Corp. She never thought it would in the end become a repeating occurrence as the war with the Raptors becomes surviving one harrowing scene after another. But each scene taught her more about survival. That is, til a UFO came into the picture. Expendable really sets an exciting plot with plenty of surprises, submerging one in an amazing world effortlessly. I loved it. Enjoy
This was a surprising book. I don’t read previews of books I choose, just look at the covers and if they look decent, I’ll read the book. Most of the time I do exceptionally well since there are a lot of great military science fiction authors. Rachel Aukes has hit that level yet. She’s a good author, but I’m a male chauvinist so I don’t really care for female lead characters.
Our main character is Olivia Ann Reyes. She’s a Youtuber/Influncer in that she makes “news” videos that reach out to her sixty-two million followers. This is not what she had trained to do, she previously was a computer nerd but got involved in filming or vidography and found out that she projects a favorable persona to get people interested in what she has to say. Currently, she is covering a “peaceful” protest until it wasn’t peaceful any more.
She saw the riot coming and decided to leave the area quickly before the police started arriving. Unfortunately, she started too late. A cop stopped her and put her in handcuffs even though he mentioned that he was a fan of her broadcasts. Still, he was ordered by his boss to bring her in. Olivia, a.k.a., Liv didn’t know why someone would pick her out for arrest just because she was doing her job. Well, that job was being paid for by the Voices of Peace Front which had just caused the riot.
So, she gets to the police station and meets with not “the boss”, but someone representing the Aegis Group. See, humanity is at war with the Raptors. These are alien bird-like reptiles that seemed to have come out of know where invading the Solar System several years ago. Humanity had been fighting against this invasion and not making much headway. It’s also curious that humanity had been given some advanced technical knowlege at about the same time as the Raptors started attacking. We had put that tech to good use and were using it to fight back. But, the Raptors had the same tech, only more of it. They seemed to be winning but they hadn’t yet attacked as far in as Earth.
While the Space Corps was the military forces doing the bulk of the fighting, they had to be augumented by Private Military Contractors (PMCs). One of these was the Aegis Group which was now telling Liv that she had two choices. One was to go to prison for being part of a riot against the governement, a felony, or two, she could join the Aegis Group and ship out with the other conscripts only she would go as a war correspondent. She knew that conscripts sent into this war didn’t last very long, but she also knew she didn’t want to spend the rest of her life in prison.
She joined the Aegis Group and went to join the troop transport named *Tereshkova*. It was a transport now configured to carry troops in stasis out to Forward Operating Base Enceladus. This base was on a tiny moon of Staurn by the same name. Liv didn’t know what to expect at all. She assumed she’d be placed on the ship in a stasis pod and awake some four-months later. At least she wouldn’t have to make videos all during the four months on what could be a boring trip if it wasn’t for the fact that the Raptors could attack at any time. They hadn’t been sighted inside Saturn’s orbit yet so maybe this would be an easy trip.
But things have a way of changing and quickly. Liv found out she wouldn’t be put into stasis, but kept awake with the flight crew. She was to be something of a VIP but her accomodations were anything but special. She also soon came to realize that this trip wasn’t going to be a routine and uneventful as everyone had hoped. The war wasn’t going well for humanity and the Raptors weren’t as dumb as everyone thought. Life was going to change and change rapidly for Liv. She just hoped that she could continue to live, but that didn’t look like a great option or choice once the ship got going towards Enceladus.
This is an exciting book to read. LIv soon meets O.T.I.S., the ship’s primary computer for all flight and crew support. OTIS has a strange relationship with the crew in that they don’t or won’t trust it to do everything even though it could. OTIS is primarily concerned with the ship’s functions and not so much about the humans on-board. Liv has to find something to do for the next four months but that isn’t a big problem since things start to go haywire pretty quickly after launch.
We get pretty far in this book, much further than I thought we would, but there’s more to come in book 2, “Besiged”, now available on Amazon. I’ve got it on my reading list even if the lead character is a female!
In red line expendables It does seem that anyone is expendable. there's a war going, And if you protest or in the Vicinity of a protest you can be arrested. Olivia took the reporter's job for the money.money was hard to come by so she reported on a protest and was arrested. Olivia was only given two Option join the cause or go to prison. They are In dire need of more men to keep te raptors in space and not reach earth. Love the story line so far. Olivia was hired as a Pr for the aegis group, To report on what they want And be on the front lines too. Takes place in the far future of 2079. And it's olivia's first time on supertain Never been on a airplane since they stopped in 2039. She is nervous and didn't get to say goodbye to her mom before she left for space. It's gonna take four months for them to get to their destination of saturn little moon so they have to be put in hibernation, Not miss olivia because she's press and has to report. In the year twenty twenty sixth the internet was flooded with design specs that they have no idea where they came from but it helped them build ships and technology and medicine for long term travel in space. Olivia helps out the mechanic with things that they need to get checked off their list daily to keep yourself busy. Olivia has seen what the raptors can do to a ship And that is before she even Before she reached her destination. This is the first time raptors have been seen near mars and the closest they been to earth. Olivia just learned that the news reports that she's sending back are not what her followers are other people are seeing, aegis It's using her likeness and putting out what they want. They don't want people to really see what it's like in space And what goes on there. Olivia found out that the raptors attacked earth and her mother was killed along with three billion others. When Olivia and the crew got to their Destination , they saw all of the damage. There were many defender ships that were destroyed. And now they are looking for survivors and Found some but now they have to find suits for them to get them aboard their ship. I found four Survivors but they weren't good people. Now they were attacked by a stork And the raptors got into the ship. And were killed They are wanting to get Intel on them.So they are going to go on their ship. They got the data they needed to help them get rid of the raptors for good but now the crew has to find the control ship and fly far away. Now the team is on a one way mission to get the control ship out. They got to the nest and it's the biggest one they've ever seen, Their ship was hit and they had to abandon it but they made it to inside the nest Along with others to help them out. Made it to the control ship but it doesn't look like anything other than a u I have to find a way in because no one else has been able to. Now it was just down to Olivia, Jason, and Sam to get the ship going because they lost their other three crew members. They were successful at getting into the ship. But the only way in is to not have any kind of weapons on you. That is why no one else was able to open it. Inside the ship they realize that it's set up for humans to breathe and they don't know why. they do know this technology is older but more advanced.olivia was able to get the ship to create a new warm hole and it started to take off. They made it that out the other side of the wormhole. And now they're trying to figure out how to destroy the control so the raptors can't get it. Sam made a new hole so that the raptors would be sucked into the black hole and the ship saved them at the last minute and spit them out somewhere else. The crew does not know where they ended up,They're not in the milky way anymore. This was a great book to read. Not something I normally read but I can say i'm hooked.

The author does a great job of creating the world of the protagonist as she ventures into space on a giant transport ship. The day to day details are interesting. The characters spend a lot of time on chores, which lends credibility to the protagonist being resourceful later on. However, much of these details regarding the skills and tools used by the protagonist come to naught later on. So why did the reader need to know all that?
There’s a quickly developed romantic relationship that is more perfunctory than emotionally meaningful. It’s short-lived, too. So why bother?
Lots and lots of unknown people die in this story before the protagonist is in a position to do anything, and her actions are mostly common sense rather than epically heroic.
Readers who enjoy watching others play combat video games may enjoy this book as it feels more like the protagonist and the reader are just along for the ride, following behind more experienced soldiers.
There are less than a dozen errors in the writing. The author has clearly spent time editing as well as imagining interesting details of what life would be like on a giant spaceship.
This one of thouse stories that is way out there. I really couldn’t get in to has the plot used some rough logic to explain things without really explaining them.
The story but it roughly 50 years in are time but way more advance lay it gives how it happened the later war seemed incumbent to the reader like I know people died but expect for the crew the other couple millions didn’t register to me. You get some aliens with no backstory but what said happen offscreen then we get events more adventures that seem like how it wasn’t happening more with other, ya I know it was probably either raptor warplans or just blend (un)luck might moments after a big that just happened. Now near the end it all seemed like the war was just to move the plot along never an important event has it should’ve been which the story just became complex in strange ways.
The story is decent. It follows a reporter or influencer who gets "recruited" to serve a corporation as a war correspondent. The war is against an alien species known as the Raptors, which are kind of like space pterodactyls... yeah, a bit weird, but the story is easy to follow and engaging enough that you forget about those details. There are also a few mysteries left unresolved by the end, which I assume will be addressed in the second part. For example, who provided humanity with the technology that allowed them to develop space travel? And why didn’t they warn them about the Raptors? Also, why are the Raptors using the same technology? Overall, the story isn't particularly great or terrible, just acceptable.
Enjoyable read and space opera. This is what happens in a future world where Christian values of respect for the individual and free choice are missing. People are considered expendable and treated that way, especially when a war is on. But don't get me wrong, this is not a dystopian depressing novel about an ugly and hopelessly depressing future like so many so called science fiction books which are fashionable at the moment. I get more than enough ugliness from the news to want even more of that. (Why does dystopian even sell? One of life's mysteries.) This book is a fun space adventure with an interesting twist near the end when all looks hopeless. Sit back and enjoy the adventure with interesting characters and breathtaking escapes, etc. Recommended.
This has a lot of weirdly specific cultural references like Only Fans, The Wreck of The Edmond Fitzgerald, and being an influencer. I don’t know how I feel about all that. It seems so niche and with some of them I just laugh because why.
I did think that the whole idea of how the body can tell the difference between real gravity and artificial gravity. How it impacts people to make them “space sick”, cause congestion, and impact how food tastes. I enjoy that little detail of how space travel impacts.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, I appreciated. The author wasn’t afraid to put the characters through some stuff.
Olivia Reyes is an independent podcaster with a following of over 62 million people. While covering a protest she senses the need to leave before being arrested. Away from the protest she is taken into custody and given a choice be conscripted and become cannon fodder or take a job as a war correspondent. Choosing the later she becomes a passenger on a troop transport, the Tereshkova, where only she and the crew are awake, over 400 others are in cryo-sleep. Instead of just pod casting she helps the crew. The voyage doesn't go as planned as Raptors strike.
Ohhhh this book could've been named A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the War, only it wasn't funny at all. It was a hard hitting Scifi military action drama where the good guys didn't necessarily get away unscathed. Liv Reyes is basically shanghaied into the war where she finds herself in a ship and on her way to one of Jupiter's moons. In order to join the troops and fight Raptors. Only the fighting started before they got there!!! Grab the book to find out how everything shakes out...
What a way to open up a new world to read in. A new universe, a new war and new heroes. I news reporter that gets drafted, a spaceship crew that has skills, and boom!!! We have a new series of stories to read. I did find some of this book flat, and some very exciting. We will have to wait for the next book to see how much more the story improves
This story was great. I liked Liv as a character and was surprised how often her content creator experience would be useful to the story without feeling forced. For some reason I thought that the book would cover her

This was a fun read. The pacing was swift with a lot of action. The characters were developed enough to care for those who survived and those who didn't. There was a solid wrap up to this story and the set up for the next one. I dislike cliffhangers but didn't feel this qualified as the plot from the first story was closed. I would reread this one.
This book didn't disappoint. I have really enjoyed reading it and look forward to the next one. I started reading SIFI as a young child and prefer this jaundra over all others. Rachel's ability to write a gripping, fast action story, with believable characters ranks up there with the best authors I have enjoyed.
I liked the characters and the story but would have preferred more detail around the enemy. Just didn't fill put that and some of the characters Was a fun read anyway.
There are a few entertaining sections, but I found most of the story slow and the science was horrid enough that I couldn't escape into the story. And implausible situations galore.
What makes you want more from a book? For me its fresh ideas, good character building, a journey through a plot that isn't obvious, and a desire for the story to continue. Rachel Aukes, I really look forward to more exposure to your imagination.
I looked at the cover art and thought it would be about humans battling aliens. It is but it isn’t what I thought it would be. It kept me entertained and I will continue the series. Lots of twists and turns.
I thought the idea of the raptors was cool and was interested but then it became very discussion instead of action. Lots of description instead or living through action.

Olivia Reyes, independent podcaster, covering a protest leaves to avoid arrest but is arrested and given a choice, be conscripted or become a war correspondent. She chooses the latter and becomes a passenger on a ship transporting conscripts, the Tereshkova.
I really felt for the reporter and how she got drafted and censored at the same time into a losing war. I loved that she became more than just a propaganda machine and helped the crew when things got rough.
Good space military read. First person telling was well narrated. Likable characters. Tense action. Wonder who the real “bad guys” are: the raptors or A-Gen.
Totally enjoyed it! This is a well written and has well developed characters. The story is catching and with the strong characters makes for a very enjoyable read. Great Reading Everyone!
This book and genre was a step outside of my typical types but I enjoyed it a lot and plan to keep reading Rachel’s books! The story line was intriguing and kept me interested and it really made me think about where we will be as far as space travel in a few years.
