Who doesn't love Ina Garten, former owner of The Barefoot Contessa shop, author and the host of Be My Guest and Barefoot Contessa on Food Network?

I was excited to get a copy of her memoir, Be Ready for When the Luck Happens, at a program I attended recently where she was interviewed by award-winning author and Parnassus bookstore owner, Ann Patchett. The program was delightful, and Ann tried to focus on questions Ina had not been asked in prior interviews. I started reading the book immediately.

Ina describes her life, trials and tribulations colorfully: her childhood was not pleasant. Her parents were unusually stern and/or incapable of having a loving relationship with Ina (to the point of abuse), and her education, career history and life story is vast and interesting. She states that her life really began when she met her husband, Jeffery. While that relationship was not without its ups and downs, they are life partners now, clearly very much in love with each other.

My takeaway from the book is understanding how hard Ina works! She is always up for a challenge, but remains true to herself. She knows when to draw the line as demonstrated with her marriage early on, business opportunity requests and the development and protection of her brand.

My only complaint about this book is that I felt a fair amount of it had already been told by Ina in her various interviews. It was a bit like watching a movie after seeing the trailer which shows all the funny, tender or poignant parts: it's a bit anti-climatic.

"My story was about hard work and luck. I never had a fiver-year plan when I taught myself how to cook, bought the store, got up in the middle of the night to make a thousand baguettes, tested recipes for thirteen cookbooks, or agreed (reluctantly!) to do a television show. I concentrate on what's in front of me and work hard because I love what I do, and I have fun doing it.

And then I leave the door open, so I'll be ready when the luck happens."

I would really love to give this a 5 as I absolutely love Ina Garten. I enjoyed reading the book and learning more about her life. My only criticism is that many of the personal things such as children, etc. were very vague and skirted over almost entirely. I don't expect her to tell us every detail or even go into things very deeply but at times I felt like I was reading a syllabus or timeline rather than exploration of a life. However, I am glad I read the book and I took inspiration from her telling of how she started her businesses, real estate and food network. Would I have liked to hear about any friends she had from the FN such as Bobby Flay, yes, but again that was not to be. I do appreciate her story and will continue to be a big fan!

I didn’t even know who Ina Garten was when I picked up this book and at first I was so confused—like why am I reading about this woman. But I found myself getting more into it. And then after all I wanted to do was look up her cooking shows and check out her recipe books from the library! I think it’s incredible what she’s been able to do with no formal cooking training.

Lots of good ‘learn from her experiences’ moments.
