Joey goes to live with her grandmother after the passing of her father and waits for her opioid addicted mother to call. She stares at the red phone, begging for it to ring. Joey has illusions and sees things that aren’t there. Or are they? As an adult she joins the police force, and her nightmares lead to a dismal discovery. As a possible suspect, she goes on the run but finally returns to learn the truth about her father’s death and to stop the red phone from ringing.

I haven’t read much horror about possessed objects, but I think I should read more. I really enjoyed this fast-paced horror story. The author had me questioning if I should be believing what I was reading which I love in a story. The book also deals with grief and difficult family dynamics. I will be checking out more work from this author.

Thank you, John Redman (@thepagemonster) for the copy of your book.

Ring Ring Ring ….

Waitttt what? I neeeedddd moreeee

This was a great read for spooky vibes in October.
Paranormal , Horror, Thriller… Suspense if u love these then definitely give it a read.

I could not put this book down. I was invested. I related to Joey at one point in her life when she was younger… waiting by that phone….
I loved how the book went through parts of her life growing up.

She started living with her grandmother at the young age of 8 after a tragic incident leaving her dad deceased , and her mother become unfit to take care of her
In her grandmothers home there is this old red phone that Joey just can’t seem to stop staring at. As all young kids, they have wild imagination but joeys takes the cake… even as an adult. Seeing things that she can’t explain…. But describes it as a nightmare come reality .

It had me at the edge of my seat reading to what happens next….

I recently won a book giveaway from @thepagemonster over on Instagram, and among the two books I won (December Park by Ronald Malfi, and The Devil Takes You Home by Gabino Iglesias) I was pleasantly surprised to find a copy of the author's debut novel 'Rings From Down Below' included in my package. You can also find his novel on Kindle Unlimited if you'd like to check it out!
.
This novel tells the story of a little girl named Joey that is forced to live with her grandmother after something really bad happens to her dad, and her mother can't care for her. Joey then spends her time obsessing over the red phone on the wall, waiting for her mother to call her because she just wants to go home.
.
The first four chapters are written in the perspective of Joey at chronological age points (i.e. Chapter One 8 years old, Chapter Two, 10 years old etc). I found that some of the words Joey was using weren't necessarily age appropriate, i.e. saying the word 'metaphorically' when she's eight years old? I don't typically hear kids that age using complex words of that sort, so it just made her seem older than she was, thus less believable.
.
In general, I had a really hard time reading this book- so much so that I was actually reading paragraphs to my husband to make sure my comprehension skills weren't out of whack. Having him then confirm that the paragraph or sentence didn't really make sense validated that I wasn't just having an off day reading.
.
The best way that I've found to describe the writing style in this book is that it feels like it's written by AI. It's incredibly disjointed, and there are way too many themes going on to make the story cohesive. What makes me think it's written by AI even more is that there are MASSIVE grammar issues (one being the dreaded 'Their, They're, There). If it happened one time I could get past it, but these errors are littered throughout the book. There are even misspellings that appear twice in a row which just seems weird to me.
.
I think this novel could greatly benefit from an editor, but until that happens, I just can't recommend this novel. There are too many mistakes, too many plot holes and too many writing styles included. Overall it just feels messy and incomplete.

This spooky read is perfect for October! Rings From Down Below kept me on the edge of my seat, gave me chills, and left me wanting more!

The book follows Joey as she lives with her grandmother after the loss of her father. She has always had a wild imagination, but as she gets older and one of her nightmares turns into reality, things start to get crazy. She questions everything and also suffers even more after the loss of her mother and grandmother. It all started when she noticed a red phone in her grandmother's house. There was always a connection that turned sinister.

Each chapter is written to see her growth from childhood to adulthood which I really enjoyed. It had me even questioning what was real and what wasn't. I think the relationships she had with her grandmother and mother changed so much throughout the story but it deepens an understanding of the present. I thought it was so intriguing to see the moment she saw one of her nightmares come to life because it was tragic and yet it meant something paranormal/spooky was actually ensuing. After reading Rings From Down Below, it has put me in the mood to watch scary movies!

🔪New to me horror authors 🔪

Rings From Down Below by John Rodman (AKA) @thepagemonster

🔥 Joey goes to live with her grandmother after her father’s suicide. The mother, a dope fiend in the trenches of her addiction, abandoned Joey too. She is desperately hoping the red phone on the wall to ring. Praying her mother or someone will come get her. Years later, that phone still haunts her. I finished this in one day!!! Enjoyed every minute of it.
