I recently won a book giveaway from @thepagemonster over on Instagram, and among the two books I won (December Park by Ronald Malfi, and The Devil Takes You Home by Gabino Iglesias) I was pleasantly surprised to find a copy of the author's debut novel 'Rings From Down Below' included in my package. You can also find his novel on Kindle Unlimited if you'd like to check it out!

This novel tells the story of a little girl named Joey that is forced to live with her grandmother after something really bad happens to her dad, and her mother can't care for her. Joey then spends her time obsessing over the red phone on the wall, waiting for her mother to call her because she just wants to go home.
.
The first four chapters are written in the perspective of Joey at chronological age points (i.e. Chapter One 8 years old, Chapter Two, 10 years old etc). I found that some of the words Joey was using weren't necessarily age appropriate, i.e. saying the word 'metaphorically' when she's eight years old? I don't typically hear kids that age using complex words of that sort, so it just made her seem older than she was, thus less believable.

In general, I had a really hard time reading this book- so much so that I was actually reading paragraphs to my husband to make sure my comprehension skills weren't out of whack. Having him then confirm that the paragraph or sentence didn't really make sense validated that I wasn't just having an off day reading.

The best way that I've found to describe the writing style in this book is that it feels like it's written by AI. It's incredibly disjointed, and there are way too many themes going on to make the story cohesive. What makes me think it's written by AI even more is that there are MASSIVE grammar issues (one being the dreaded 'Their, They're, There). If it happened one time I could get past it, but these errors are littered throughout the book. There are even misspellings that appear twice in a row which just seems weird to me.

I think this novel could greatly benefit from an editor, but until that happens, I just can't recommend this novel. There are too many mistakes, too many plot holes and too many writing styles included. Overall it just feels messy and incomplete.
