!!!Trigger Warning!!! There are several instances in this book that may be potentially triggering which include violence, domestic violence, death, abuse, torture, sexual assault, and [off-page] rape.
Jade speeds down the road in a stolen vehicle determined to get away from the man relentlessly pursuing her. She flips over the guardrail and lands nose-down on the tree-covered mountainside. Staggering out of the car and bleeding from her head, she knows her life is in danger. However, Jade’s determination won’t allow her to stop there. Especially not when Ivan starts to pursue her on foot. She’d rather take her chances running down the snowy mountainside on a cold winter night with only the light of the full moon to guide her way. Would this be just another escape attempt gone awry?
Jade is a stubborn, persistent, and compassionate seventeen-year-old girl with some grit and some wit. She is sold to the highest bidder by her stepfather, a man once a hero to her, but now a monster. And he wouldn’t be the only monster she would have to face. Nor the only monster she would fight. Because she would fight. She can’t help but fight, even when she knows the odds are against her.
When Jade is sold to a wealthy businessman, Ivan, she expects to become his sex slave, but things take an unexpected turn when she is gifted to Ivan’s brother. Seemingly now in the clear, Jade quickly realizes that Ivan remains a constant threat, and he shows no intention of ceasing his pursuit, despite his brother’s demands not to touch her.
Meanwhile, there is a mysterious man who has been looking for Jade when he realizes she may be in danger, but every time he gains an inch, he loses a mile. When he finally manages to get her to safety, Jade has a hard time truly escaping her monsters when her mind won’t let her forget what Ivan did to her. But perhaps forgetting her monsters isn’t how she’s meant to overcome her battles. No. Perhaps facing them is the only way for her to have her victory. So this time, if he comes for her, she’ll be ready. And she’ll fight.
The story delves into the harrowing story of Jade, a young girl who faces unimaginable abuse and trauma at the hands of her step-father.
The novel begins with Jade's single mother marrying Andy, a man who quickly reveals his true colors as he becomes cruel and abusive towards both Jade and her mother. As the family faces a series of tragedies and losses, Jade's situation only worsens, culminating in her mother's death and Jade being sold into slavery to a violent mafia boss by her step-father.
The book is a heavy read, with multiple scenes of physical abuse and graphic violence that may be difficult for some readers to stomach. I found myself skipping through the toughest paragraphs, unable to bear the brutality inflicted upon Jade.
Despite the darkness of the subject matter, Jade's story is touching and poignant. She is a victim who has normalized abuse due to her traumatic childhood experiences, but she eventually breaks free and begins to heal.
"Fire and Tears" sheds light on the silent suffering of abuse victims and the cycle of trauma that perpetuates such violence. It’s a compelling and thought-provoking read that explores the complexities of abuse and the possibility of healing. This book is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of hope in the face of darkness.
Fire and Tears by Jessica Lewandowski is a gripping and harrowing story of survival, Its about overcoming the odds stacked by against you and finally being triumphant.
It tells the story of Jade, a teenage girl who faces constant abuse and torture from his father and then is sold as a sex slave to the highest bidder and how she escapes the trauma forms the crux of the story.
The book is very well written with each scene presented in details but at times the torture and abuse are written in so vivid detail that makes the stomach crunch.
The settings are well described as if we are living the book. The climax is well though of as it provides hope for a girl who has gone through so much.
Overall, it is a a compelling and thought-provoking read.
A gripping, emotionally stirring story full of twists and turns
This book had me hooked from the first page to the last. One of the standout strengths of this novel is the constant rollercoaster of emotions it takes the reader on. There are beautiful, hopeful moments, only to have everything shattered into pieces a few chapters later. The fear and despair many characters endure are brought to life through impressive storytelling and atmospheric settings, making you feel them deeply as you read.
The characters also deserve special praise. There are many of them, and each one is uniquely crafted, with a believable personality and clear behavioral patterns. Some characters I instantly hated – but that was the point: they’re written to evoke those emotions. Others surprise you with unexpected twists or hidden depths you don’t initially expect. Character development over the more than 500 pages gives the story an incredible sense of dynamism that keeps you turning the pages.
I especially enjoyed how the story is told from various perspectives. Sometimes, you don’t immediately know whose point of view you’re reading, which adds to the suspense. At the same time, this approach gives you deep insight into the thoughts and motivations of different characters, adding another layer to the story.
One thing I found slightly unfortunate at times was the predictability. After a few hundred pages, once you adapt to the storytelling style, you can sometimes anticipate what’s coming through the perspective shifts. There were also a few key moments where I would have liked a different outcome to certain events. However, that’s just my subjective opinion and doesn’t detract from the book’s quality. The story itself is cohesive, and there aren’t any moments that feel "off" or out of place.
Overall, this is an emotionally stirring and captivating story, and its ending makes every minute of reading worth it. A clear recommendation for anyone who loves a deep, surprising tale full of twists and turns!
It's one heck of a ride. It's got some pretty heavy topics, if you're up for an emotional journey, give it a go. You'll be thinking about it long after you finish the last page.
I don't want to give too much away, but I can say that at first I was nervous about taking on a book of this length (normally read half the size), but the slow burn was worth the effort. The change of perspectives throughout helps keep things fresh and engaging. To me, the book was more emotionally challenging than psychologically, which is fine, just not something I am used to reading.
This was a beautifully written story. It was heartbreaking, brutal, and almost unbearable in all the right ways. But it was also inspiring and triumphant. It's a great read and emotional tale for anyone who has been through a difficult time in their lives or who has experienced loss and adversity. It's also a great drama and suspense thriller.
The novel follows a young woman named Jade Brooks. She goes through sheer hell for a large portion of the novel. That's a big warning for anyone who isn't aware. This novel deals with some heavy subjects, mostly in the form of domestic abuse and sexual assault. But if you can stomach the mention of those topics, this novel tackles them quite tastefully. Jade's Stepfather becomes a monster and physically abuses Jade and her mother. Then Jade is sold as a slave to the highest bidder, an even bigger monster named Ivan. Thankfully, Ivan has a brother named Dmitri, who is quite a gentleman, even though he is a very proud man. I quite enjoyed Dmitri and found him quite likable and interesting. I also really enjoyed the maid, the doctor, and some of Dmitri's crew. They all added depth and intrigue to the story, keeping it from being too depressing or one-note. But there are quite a few painful moments in this book, even a few moments where Dmitri, has honorable as he is, becomes stubborn asshole, as well as a few moments where Jade is put between a rock and a hard place as she is rendered powerless over and over again. But towards the latter portion of the novel, that starts to change.
I won't spoil the ending, but it was intense. There's a huge reveal that changes everything. A new character named Casey is introduced, a total badass who emulates so much strength and confidence for Jade to look up to and desire for herself. I loved the ending but found myself wanting even more. It was a long Book but worth it. It felt like I had just taken a journey with a woman I had come to know and understand very well. Definitely looking forward to more from this talented author. I highly recommend this book. It's excellent.
Jade's biological father disappeared. Jade's mother Bridgit was raising Jade alone when she met and married what appeared to be a good man named Andy. Jade's step father, Andy, would not allow her to call him dad, he was extremely verbally and physically abusive. Jade had good grandparents Grandma Vivian and Papa Joe, and they loved Jade and were kind to her. Jade's mother was caring, and trapped in an abusive relationship. Jade and her mother tried to break away from Jade's step father numerous times. When Andy caught them and brought them back, they were punished with physical violence. Jade's mother dies, and then Jade is left with her step-father raising her.
Jade grows up and starts to find comfort with a Russian, mafia style family that is violent. It seems like Jade normalized the events in her childhood and dragged them with her into adulthood. She is still feeling somehow comforted by normalizing violence. She doesn't cry when she is hit. The resilience is relatable. Jade has to break away, make new friends. She learns how to be strong, free and independent. It's a story of a woman's strength.
There are books that flicker softly, and then there are ones that burn through you—Fire and Tears did exactly that. From the very first page, Lewandowski doesn't just tell a story; she tears open the emotional fabric and lets the heat and heartbreak pour out.
The characters were raw, imperfect, and deeply human—just the way I like them. Every decision, every broken moment felt earned. There’s a vulnerability to the way the narrative unfolds that kept me emotionally invested. It’s the kind of book that doesn’t care about making you comfortable—it wants you to feel everything, even when it hurts.
What struck me most was how Lewandowski wove fire and sorrow into every layer—love, trauma, resilience—it all simmered beneath the surface, threatening to ignite. And when it finally did? It was devastating in the best way. This is not a story of easy redemption or clean catharsis—it’s messy, painful, and beautifully written.
If you're someone who appreciates emotional grit, haunting prose, and characters who linger long after the last page, Fire and Tears is one to put on your shelf. It's a scorcher of a read, and I honestly didn’t want it to end.
This story grabs you from the first page and never lets go. Jade’s desperate escape and relentless fight for survival feel painfully real, and her determination makes her an unforgettable heroine. The author balances heart-pounding suspense with deep emotional storytelling, creating a journey that is both thrilling and heartbreaking.
Jade’s trauma, courage, and resilience are portrayed with honesty and compassion, never shying away from the darker realities she faces. Every scene feels cinematic, from the snow-covered mountains to the moments of danger and fleeting hope.
Despite the brutality of her world, Jade’s strength shines through, reminding readers that even in the darkest circumstances, survival and healing are possible. This is not just a story about running. It is about reclaiming power, identity, and self-worth.
A gripping and emotional read for anyone who loves strong female leads and stories of survival against impossible odds.
A lot of this book feels intense because the girl’s trauma is right there and the story doesn’t hide it. People say it hits hard, and it does. You follow her while she runs from a past that’s seriously messed up, and it feels close, like you’re sitting in the car with her while she tries to hold herself together. There are parts that feel almost too real, the kind that make your stomach twist a little, but it never turns into shock-just-to-shock. It stays focused on her trying to survive, even when she’s confused or angry or shutting down. Some chapters slow down a lot with memories and hurt that’s been sitting there forever, and it can feel heavy, but the tense moments make you keep going. It’s not smooth or easy. It’s rough and dark and sometimes you have to step back. But it also feels honest in a way a lot of books don’t. If you want a story about trying to escape something awful and maybe finding a way forward, this one sticks.
Jessica Lewandowski's "Fire and Tears" follows seventeen-year-old Jade, a young woman who refuses to be defined by the horrific circumstances thrust upon her by those who should have protected her.
The novel explodes into action with a heart-racing scene of Jade escaping in a stolen vehicle, crashing down a mountainside, and showing incredible resilience in the face of seemingly impossible odds.
While the subject matter is deeply dark and potentially triggering, the book ultimately offers a powerful message of hope and personal empowerment that will resonate with readers who appreciate gritty, uncompromising storytelling.
So Buckle up for a raw and intense journey through survival that will leave you breathless from the first page.
This book pulls you in from the very first page and doesn’t let go. The story of Jade is one of grit, survival, and an unshakable will to fight back even when the odds are overwhelmingly against her. From the heart-pounding opening scene to the raw emotional struggles she faces, the narrative is both thrilling and deeply human.
The author does an excellent job blending fast-paced action with emotional depth. Themes of resilience, trauma, and empowerment are woven seamlessly into the narrative, making it more than just a survival story. This is not a light read but it handles the serious topics with honesty and purpose. If you are looking for a story that will keep your heart racing while also leaving you reflecting on the strength of the human spirit, this is the book to pick up.
Highly recommended for fans of dark, suspenseful fiction with a strong, unforgettable heroine.
Fire and Tears… well, from where do I begin? This is a grim story. This is Jade’s grim story, a brilliantly written book. What stands out is the natural flow of the story, and the dialogues are tailored to the voice of the character. The writer with a clear POV sense is the writer who knows how to evoke raw and natural emotions from the character, which reciprocate in the mind of the reader. In other words, that’s the very essence of storytelling. That’s, in my opinion, good writing. And the story itself has that magnetic feel to it, which grabs your attention from the very first page. I rarely give five stars for any book, but for this, I give five and more.
Fire and Tears is dark, gut wrenching, and unexpectedly hopeful. It follows Jade, a young woman surviving horrific abuse and trafficking, and her long climb toward justice, love, and peace. The author writes with brutal honesty but also compassion, every chapter burns with emotion. Jade’s strength feels real, her pain never sensationalized, and her healing earned. The found family dynamic (Dmitri, Dr. Jackman, Casey, and others) balances the trauma with warmth and redemption. It’s not an easy read, there are explicit scenes of violence and abuse but it’s a powerful story of survival, courage, and the light that refuses to die. Raw, haunting, and ultimately redemptive.
This book was very sad, disturbing and eye opening. At first, I wasn't going to finish the book but Jade's strength and spirit urged me on to finish reading it. Sometimes, you need to see and face evilness in our world head on, as Jade did in this story. The book was about domestic abuse, sex abuse, drug, alcohol addiction and the evilness of the sex slave business. But, the most important aspect of the story is strength in overcoming evil. And always having faith, hope and love in your heart, mind and soul. Again this book opens your mind to many evils in our world and we must constantly work to defeat this evilness not close our minds to it! A thought Provoking Book!
This book is a gripping tale of resilience and redemption set against a backdrop of heartbreak and hope. The author masterfully weaves raw emotion with vivid storytelling, creating a narrative that lingers long after the final page. It’s a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the strength to rebuild from the ashes.
I loved Jade’s story. Once I got into it, which I admit took me a few chapters, I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. I especially loved the character development across the board- this was one of the most impressive things the author did! I also appreciate any book that can bring me to tears, both happy and sad, which this did several times for me! The main reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the grammatical and spelling mistakes, as well as the abundant use of “haha”. It was slightly distracting for me, but overall didn’t take away from this awesome story. I will be recommending this book!
Jade Jade, the main character, undergoes a jarring trauma. Simultaneously, the antagonist, Ivan, is quite terrifying as the story details the protagonist's unsavory exposure to a woman's worst experience. The plot pacing is intriguing, the characters are good, and the style fits the thriller mode. The book could have benefitted from further editing after the development edit, as evident in the sequencing. Overall, however, the effort is commendable.
Fire and Tears by Jessica Lewandowski is a compelling suspense thriller that immerses readers into the harrowing journey of Jade, a seventeen-year-old girl confronting unimaginable adversities. The narrative begins with a heart-pounding escape, as Jade flees from a relentless pursuer, setting the tone for a story filled with tension and unexpected turns.
Lewandowski crafts a protagonist who embodies both vulnerability and tenacity. Jade's character is intricately developed, showcasing her evolution from a victim of betrayal—sold by her stepfather—to a young woman determined to reclaim her agency. Her interactions with antagonists like Ivan and his brother are fraught with danger, yet they highlight her unyielding spirit and resourcefulness.
The author's descriptive prowess brings the settings to life, from the perilous, snow-covered mountainsides to the oppressive environments Jade seeks to escape. This vivid imagery enhances the reader's immersion, making the stakes feel immediate and real. The pacing is well-executed, maintaining suspense while allowing for moments of introspection that deepen our connection to Jade's plight.
However, potential readers should be aware that the novel addresses mature themes, including abuse and sexual assault, which may be triggering for some. Lewandowski handles these subjects with sensitivity, ensuring they serve the narrative's exploration of resilience rather than gratuitous shock value.
Some readers might find certain plot developments predictable, and the pacing, while generally steady, occasionally lingers on descriptive passages that could detract from the momentum. Despite these minor critiques, the novel's strengths far outweigh its shortcomings.
In conclusion, Fire and Tears is a testament to the human spirit's capacity to endure and fight against overwhelming odds. Jessica Lewandowski delivers a story that is both emotionally charged and thought-provoking, making it a noteworthy addition to the suspense thriller genre.
This novel entertained me, kept me on the edge A lot and also hit my soft spot I really enjoyed it and I think there is room there for further adventures with Jade and her father and New family maybe stumbling on to child traffickers or a serial killer or drug traffickers after helping another addicted human being
A powerful and moving read. This book is a psychological thriller that had me hooked from page one and all the way until the end. This novel does explore the topic of violence and domestic abuse, so readers be prepared.
The story follows a young woman named Jade. After her and her mother suffers from the abuse of her stepfather, Jade is eventually sold off to a mafia lord, only to be given to his brother. Each chapter is told from multiple POVs, with the primary narrative told from Jade’s perspective. As the story unfolds, the reader gains insight as Jade tries to overcome her tragic circumstances. Along the way, there are several twists and turns and the ending is a bit shocking.
Overall, if you enjoy powerful psychological thrillers, then you’ll enjoy this. I also appreciated the author’s style of writing as well.
This book is a gripping exploration of resilience and courage, following Jade's harrowing journey as she escapes a life of unimaginable horror. The author skillfully crafts a narrative filled with tension and emotional depth, making Jade's struggles and determination palpable. Her transformation from a victim to a fighter is both inspiring and heart-wrenching. The complex dynamics between Jade, her stepfather, and Ivan create a compelling backdrop that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. With vivid characters and a relentless pace, this story is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit. A must-read that will leave you breathless and rooting for Jade every step of the way! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fire and Tears absolutely gutted me—in the best and worst ways. It’s one of those books that grabs you by the throat from page one and doesn’t let go, no matter how much you might want to look away. I didn’t just read Jade’s story—I felt it. Every ache, every flicker of hope, every punch to the gut.
Jade’s life starts off rough and only seems to spiral from there. Her mom, Bridget, does her best as a single parent, until she marries Andy. At first, he seems okay… but wow, that mask drops fast. He turns into a monster—controlling, violent, emotionally and physically abusive. And he doesn’t just go after Jade’s mom—he targets Jade too. It’s hard to read. Really hard. There were moments I had to put the book down and take a breath. I even skimmed a few of the roughest scenes because it just hit too close to home.
After her mom dies (and yeah, that was a knife to the heart), Jade is left completely vulnerable. And what happens next... I wasn’t ready. Andy sells her—to a mafia boss. Like, actually sells her. From there, her world just gets darker. But somehow, Jade never fully breaks. She bends, sure. She’s scarred, deeply. But she’s still standing.
What really got me was how real it all felt. The author doesn’t sugarcoat anything. She dives deep into the horrors of abuse and trauma, but also into the small, fleeting moments of love—like Jade’s bond with her grandparents, Papa Joe and Grandma Vivian. Those two were the only light for her for so long, and their presence gave the story a pulse when it felt like all the oxygen had been sucked out.
And then there’s the writing. It’s raw, sharp, and unfiltered. Some of the lines felt like broken glass—beautiful in their pain. The pacing is relentless, especially during the chase scenes, and the dialogue rings true. The whole thing just feels lived in.
What stayed with me most, though, was Jade’s journey toward strength. Even after everything, she begins to find pieces of herself. She doesn’t cry when she’s hurt anymore—not out of numbness, but out of defiance. She finds new people, makes new choices, and starts carving a life that she owns. It's not neat or tidy, but it’s real.
If I had to compare this to anything, it reminded me of Room or A Child Called "It", but with its own brutal rhythm. It's not a feel-good story. It’s heavy, intense, and honestly might not be for everyone. But if you can handle the weight, it’s absolutely worth the read.
Fire and Tears is a reminder that some stories demand to be felt, not just read. And Jade? She’s a character I won’t forget for a long, long time.

A Story Laden with Tragedy, Perseverance, and Hope
Fire and Tears is a gripping story full of heartache, tragic circumstances, and perseverance. We follow Jade, who was sold off by her stepdad and is put through the wringer the entire time. Even though she is so cruelly treated, she doesn't relinquish the kindness in her spirit or the ability to forgive and move on.
I would say that this is a good way to get your feet wet on the topics of human trafficking and dark circumstances for folks sensitive to reading it but who are curious, as nothing ever gets graphic. This would also be recommended for folks who appreciate some fundamentals often found in religion to be weaved into the story as well.
In the first half of the book, I found things the most harrowing and interesting as you start to learn about the characters, some of their backstories, and follow Jade along with each twist and turn. As the story continued past the halfway point, there were some nice twists, but I was a little unsatisfied with how we arrived at the ending. The acts of violence and intimidation regarding the main set of characters were a bit repetitive and safe; I was really rooting for more drama, violence, and darkness.
There were two biggest upsets for me. One: Ivan at the end. For him to have pursued Jade as hard as he did towards the end, I felt his actions should have been more ravenous than they were. And two: how she winds up forgiving her stepdad and essentially tending to his wounds.
I did get the whiff of righteousness in Jade's character, being that she never gives up her kind and gentle spirit no matter what she's subjected to. There were also pro-life tones in certain instances in the book, which I wasn't particularly fond of.
All and all, I was hoping for so much more grit based on the story's premise, but this comes from someone who enjoys diving into those depths.
Another minor gripe was the multiple first-person character views that the book was written in. I didn't feel it was entirely necessary had the overall book been written in the 3rd.
“Fire and Tears" The cover and title drew me in! This is not a novel for the faint of heart; it is a raw, visceral descent into the darkest corners of human cruelty, illuminated only by the fierce, unyielding will of its protagonist. The narrative plunges the reader into the harrowing world of Jade, a seventeen-year-old girl whose life becomes a relentless gauntlet of survival. Sold into bondage by the very person who should have protected her—her abusive stepfather—Jade is thrust into a brutal reality that tests the absolute limits of her endurance. What follows is not merely a story of victimhood, but a powerful, emotionally gripping testament to the resilience of the human spirit. The strength of the novel lies in its unflinching portrayal of Jade. She is not a sanitized hero; she is a young woman forged in trauma, carrying wounds that are both visible and devastatingly internal. The author wisely avoids sentimentalism, presenting Jade’s pain as an unapologetic, raw force. Yet, amidst the suffering, it is her determination that defines her. She is a compelling and heartbreakingly real character, and her fight to reclaim her own life, even when all hope seems lost, forms the powerful, suspenseful core of the story. The constant, looming threat of her captors, particularly the menacing "Ivan," creates a palpable tension that makes the book nearly impossible to put down. This is, without question, a heavy and often brutal read. The story confronts graphic violence and deep-seated trauma head-on, and some scenes are difficult to bear. However, the narrative’s purpose is not gratuitous shock; it is to shed light on the cyclical nature of abuse and the silent suffering of its victims. The "tears" of the title are plentiful, but they are ultimately overshadowed by the "fire." The book's true message is one of survival and the possibility of healing. It is a haunting exploration of how one can endure the unimaginable and still find the strength to fight back, making "Fire and Tears" a deeply affecting and memorable journey.
I just finished Fire and Tears, and it’s left me feeling like I’ve been dragged through snow and fire right alongside Jade. From the first page, it’s an unforgiving, breathless ride. Jade bursts into the story mid-flight from a nightmare life, her hands gripping a stolen steering wheel while her heart pounds like a war drum. The writing swiftly immerses you in fear and adrenaline, making the stakes feel real and immediate.
What struck me most is how raw and human Jade feels. Even in the face of terror, Jade remains stubborn and witty, yet a deep ache pierces her soul. The way she carries her past — the betrayals, the violence, and the moments that nearly broke her — makes her resilience hit even harder. Each chapter peels back another layer of her trauma, and yet there’s this fierce glow of hope that refuses to die.
The winter wilderness becomes both a cage and a lifeline, adding tension and beauty to every scene. Snow muffles footsteps but also reveals them. Trees offer cover, but shadows hide threats. The landscape is painted with striking detail, turning the mountains into another character, harsh and majestic.
The book isn’t an effortless read. It’s violent, heartbreaking, and at times suffocating. But it’s also fierce, profoundly moving, and shot through with the fragile possibility of healing.
If you’re drawn to thrillers that hit hard emotionally and don’t shy away from darkness, Fire and Tears is absolutely worth it. It left me shaken, yet strangely hopeful, and I was still thinking about Jade long after I closed the book.
Dear Jessica, Fantastic story written by you. There are so many characters and so many situations, all well depicted by you. It is a marathon story, and it needs more than patience, time, but passion to read a fabulous story. There are quite a few evil characters like Evan, Viktor, Andy, Charlotte, and a few others as against noble characters like, Dmitry, James, Tory, Roman, Lev, Casey, Wesley, Dr.Jackman and few others. The entire story has a main character JADE who undergoes various pressures, mental and physical throughout the story. She has the tenacity to tolerate all the physical tortures inflicted on her by sadistic demons like Andy, Ivan and Viktor. She along with her mentor Casey face many adverse situations bravely. Some evil characters transform into good characters along the way. It is full of roller coaster experience. The moment one relaxes that Jade has come out of some crisis, suddenly Ivan comes in the picture and again and again torments her. It is a wonderful story and the author has kept the track of the characters, situations and flow of the story very well. Initially I had a doubt whether domestic violences do occur in an advanced country like the USA. But I got my answer that Good and Evil characters do prevail in all countries, irrespective of their social and economic conditions. All is well that ends well! I wish the author very well in her writing career. MANGALAM SHIVA. BANGALORE INDIA. 24.12.2024.
Fire and Tears is a gripping, unflinching account of a seventeen year old girl’s fight for survival and her journey toward healing. From the very first chapter, where Jade flees down a mountain road with a relentless pursuer at her heels, this novel refuses to let you look away. The stakes feel high at every turn, and Jade’s resilience in the face of unimaginable horrors kept me glued to the page.
Lewandowski doesn’t shy away from intense subject matter (readers are made aware of the triggers for violence, abuse, and sexual assault) yet she handles these moments with sensitivity and a certain raw honesty. Jade herself is the heart of this story: stubborn, compassionate, and braver than she even knows. She endures a terrifying ordeal after her stepfather sells her off to a dangerous man, but the beauty of the novel lies in how Jade’s indomitable spirit shines through the darkness. As Jade navigates new dangers and grapples with old wounds, we witness not just her survival instincts, but her capacity to hold onto her humanity. That delicate interplay between darkness and light kept me on edge, rooting for Jade every step of the way.
If you’re looking for a dark thriller that explores the resilience of the human spirit, Fire and Tears is a powerful read. It will shake you, break your heart, and ultimately remind you that hope can still thrive in the most desperate of circumstances.
