Wicked Game

Rate this book
Cass Pendleton and Jaime Dalton have been mortal enemies since the first day of kindergarten when Jaime pulled her hair and Cass knocked him flat on his ass. Jaime is on the verge of superstardom in the NFL; all that’s missing is a Super Bowl ring and a personal assistant who can handle his business without handling his business. Cass seems to be the best person for the job. She’s smart, mouthy, dependable, pig-headed, loyal, and completely not his type. So why can’t Jaime think of anything except Cass? He knows one thing for dead certain. If the game doesn’t kill him, sex with Cass Pendleton most definitely will.

Um... so, this didn't start too well.
The heroine is sarcastic and angry, because... hm. And the hero is... because...

Skimming, skimming, sex scene.
Okay, what??
Whoa!

Right now, this feels like it needs another dimension. In a very bad way.
And, since my OCD will most definitely not let me just leave it unfinished, I'll give it a rest for... indefinite amount of time, 'til I'm able to give it a chance.
Hopefully, it'll turn out to be good.
Or at least bearable.

* review update *
So, my OCD kind of pushed me to finish this, aaaaaand...
It doesn't get any better. Unfortunately. I guess it's just one of those "everyone likes it but me" things. And one of those "detached" things (yep, again).
I simply couldn't warm up toward characters. It didn't feel right. I have no idea what the point's suppose to be.
On the one hand, there are some rather unnecessary additions to the story that seemed kind of out of place here.
On the other hand, it seemed to me that this story has a hard enough time holding itself together without any additional elements to cause confusion.
What's the motivation?
Where are the emotions?
What moves these people?
I'm utterly confused, and left hanging with all the questions and no answers. None whatsoever.
Too bad.

Touchdown! 4 1/2 stars! This one had me laughing right up until the end. Awesome dialogue, great couple chemistry, a bit of suspense, and a whole lot of down and dirty lovin'. There is some light BDSM, mixed with humor, nothing hard core. Jamie and Cass' first sexual encounter left me a bit miffed, and wondering what the heck happened. After that they just connected really well and it was a very amusing, steamy read. Yes, they were verbally harsh towards one another, but in my eyes it was never cruel and sometimes pretty damn funny. It worked with the storyline and was used more as a defensive mechanism to convince themselves that their attraction to each other was nothing more than sexual. HAHA! This was an enjoyable story with two likeable characters that left me smiling!

"Property of Number 4 Miami Football." Where do I sign up for that gig? Just tell me when and I'm there!

Who knew temping at a nanny agency would land you in the lap of luxury and the lap of one of football's most eligible bachelors? Certainly not the recently unemployed Cass Pendleton and she definitely didn't think that lap would belong to her childhood nemesis, Jamie Dalton. Cass and Jamie have been bickering since they were 5 years old when he pulled her hair and she knocked him out!

Jaime's schedule is out of control and he is in desperate need of some help to keep all his appointments in order. Who better to "handle his business without handling his business" than his lifelong adversary and plain jane, Cass Pendleton? He is confident that the saucy and energetic blast from his past is not after any of the things most women who surround him are after—his money, his time and a big, fat diamond ring to decorate their finger. No, he is convinced he is totally safe! The more time he spends with Cass, however, the more he realizes that she is everything he needs. Like any great quarterback, he is busy running offense - determined to score big and earn the right to touch up and down Cass' luscious body.

Jaime is a superstar football player who's accustomed to winning and the goal he is aiming for is Cass, but she isn't like all the other women who easily falls under his spell. Once he realizes she isn't as easily tempted, he sees it as a challenge--a challenge he plans to win. Cass puts up a tough front as a heavy hitter on defense, guarding her heart from the heaviest hit of all. What he doesn't foresee is falling victim to his own WICKED GAME.

The banter between these two was top notch. Their rhetoric was so hot it made me giddy with delight. All Jaime had to do was turn on the charm and there's no woman in the world who could refuse to submit to the demands spewing out of his hot, dirty little mouth. When Jaime speaks, panties drop. What are we playing touch or tackle? I will gladly be the "Property of Number 4 Miami Football" and I'm pretty confident you will too.

Wicked Game is a fun light hearted contemporary romance which features great banter between the leads, the hero who is a Pro football player and the heroine, his nemesis from high school who somehow ends up as his personal assistant. They spend the book trading quipes and insults then having hot lovin after they give into their chemistry. There was some drama at the end to finish off the story.

If you are looking for a light hearted book with good banter, this would fit the bill.

5 PEPPER & IRONMAN STARS

Cassandra "Cass" Pendleton and Jamison "Jaime" Dalton were childhood adversaries. Now in their late twenties, Jaime is a professional quarterback for Miami and Cass is a middle school teacher who had just lost her job due to the economy. When Jaime offers her a job as his assistant, Cass can't refuse even though she still can't stand the arrogant jerk. Jaime hires Cass, because she's the last person who will get the wrong idea and think he could be her meal ticket and she's not even close to being his type.

But what's really behind the life long animosity. As Jaime's mother said so artfully put it:

"Honey, you and Cassandra Pendleton have never been friends. Sexual adversaries since you were both old enough ...hell the way the two of you fought when you happened to be in the same room was almost like foreplay as far back as middle school. Everyone knew that but the two of you, apparently. Gloria and I worried most of your high school years that she'd either kill you or turn up pregnant."

This sets the stage for hilarity. Cass has the smart mouth and witty comebacks. She loves to call Jaime a dumb jock and tells him flat out what she thinks without pulling any punches.

When someone tries to hurt them both, Jaime will do anything to protect Cass, whom he calls Pepper. Their little game of Tony Stark aka Ironman and his Pepper Potts is hilarious.

I really loved this book. Thought it was cute, funny, and very sexy.

**2/8/15 Read for the second time. I really love this book and wish I cold get more of these characters.

This book really surprised me. The beginning really grabbed me and then I thought it was just ok. The more I read, the more I liked it. I must say that the sex/love scenes were explosive and very steamy. The relationship between Cass and Jaime started out as an I hate you thing. This went on for a while even though they were having very kinky sex. As the story moved along I could feel that they were connecting yet they kept the I hate you's pointed at each other. The story line was really good with a decent plot. While not being a football fan, I enjoyed those parts of the story too. By the end of the book you know without a doubt that these two are madly in love and you get that HEA ending even though they are still saying I hate you.

I'm glad I read this book so thank you Karla for the recommendation. I very much enjoyed it :)

I hate you..ooh please touch me...I hate you..oh please tie me up and do naughty things to me..I hate you..please have sex with me...I hate you....no I love you but Im to dumb to realize it..oh for Gods sake woman (and equally stupid man)get a grip.....

seriously are people really that/this stupid about beeing in love..does one not know?..Yeah well I know its just a story but still...the idea must have come from somewhere..

and going from I hate you to wham bam..naked and tied up with a blindfold outside! if I remember it correctly...really?I mean I like when charachters bicker a bit...it can be fun and also a bit sweet..but this wasn´t sweet they where just stupid and mean and gah.....

No debo leer. Tengo que estudiar. Los finales no se rinden solos.
No debo leer. Tengo que estudiar. Los finales no se rinden solos.
No debo leer. Tengo que estudiar. Los finales no se rinden solos.
No debo leer. Tengo que estudiar. Los finales no se rinden solos.

¿Los que se pelean se aman? Cortito, entretenido y me gustó bastaaaaante.

¿Qué me hubiera gustado?

Sassy Cass and pro footballer Jaime have known each other since kindergarten. Cass hates his guts. All they have ever done is argue. But he needs a PA and she needs a job.

I really loved this story. I loved the hatred. I loved their banter.
Right now, I’m going to die if you don’t kiss me. Please, Jaime, I’ve dreamed of your lips on mine every night, it seems.” “After you call me Lord Ironman.” “You really are incorrigible, you know that, right?” “Sticks and stones, baby, now call—You have to earn that kiss. Say it.” “Lord Ironman, please play tonsil hockey with me.”

Cass is a strong heroine who tells it like it is to Jaime. She doesn’t care that he’s gorgeous, rich and successful. I liked how the tension built and I loved the dirty talk and the slight bdsm elements.

The only reason I have dropped a star was because I hated how housewifey Cass’s daily life seemed. Her job was pretty rubbish. I felt a smart women needed more of a challenge than watching day time TV and upcycling furniture.

I also missed that there was no actual football till 3/4 of the way through the book. I do like the sports bits that why I choose sports romance as a genre. It was lacking mostly here.

But otherwise I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by this author.

I wish I hadn't read this as fast as I did. I loved it! I loved the verbal sparring between Jaime and Cass. They were so cute together. And HOT. Ms. Celeste is wonderful at perfectly describing scenes and atmosphere without using long blocks of text (which I appreciate to no end). A couple of my favorite scenes: phone sex on national television. God, I just loved that people were speculating about who Jaime was talking to. Also: the scene in the hospital when Cass curls up in bed with him. So freaking sweet. And what a wonderful, emotionally-charged ending. This one definitely had all my favorites: a hot alpha male, a feisty heroine, quick-witted dialogue, hot sex, and heart-wrenching emotion. This will definitely be a fun re-read.

This is my first Mercy Celeste book and it will NOT be my last. I adore her writing style. I loved the 'mortal enemies' since kindergarten plot. I loved Jaime and Cass. The arguments were hot, their sex scenes were even hotter. (SPOILER ALERT: He's a biter...in a good way)I loved the ending and their dialogue. It was just good.

The dirty talk was pretty damn good!!

I wanted to read this book for the 'dirty talker' and even tho Jamie Dalton is an ASS....he can sure make a girl all tingly!! The mystery/who done-it wasn't so mysterious, at least to me it wasn't. I'm still giving it a 4* since I got out of it what I had anticipated on getting...wet panties!

To the wee hours. That how late I was up finishing this one. It was fun and I was very surprised I liked it so much.

The GOOD about this book:
1 -- It was just plain good fun. The banter between the H and the h was unending and fun to read. These two were each others antagonists from kindergarten. They fussed and teased each other throughout their childhoods. One holds fond memories of this, while the other doesn't. There really is truth to what we tell our little girls; the boy teases the one he is most attracted to. Unfortunately, this is cold comfort for that little girl while it is happening and can leave scars years later. Boys can be so cruel.

2 -- This is a really simple story. There is very little secondary character play at all. Sometimes, this is just what the doctor ordered, when done as well as this author does it. Reading this reminded me of some of the simpler reads by some of my fav chick-lit authors; Jill Shalvis or Rachel Gibson. Remember, I said some of their simpler reads.

3 -- I was sold on this book when you see NFL in the synopsis. I love a sports read. LOVE them. This one had a nice blend. I did say simple earlier, so it isn't chalk full of sports analogies. Neither does it go into this in character detail, but it is there and I liked it. The cover attracted me too.

4 -- Must be said, I liked the slow build of this relationship. They start as adversaries, then friendly, then friends, then lovers, then "can't live without you's". I love a slow building relationship that pulls me along with it and gives me the building intimacy between the characters. This is a real selling point for me. I know for others too. No insta-love here.

Okay, what were the things I thought could have been better?
1 -- It was simple. I loved these characters and would have liked to have had a bit more depth for them. I would have liked some secondary depth to this story. More football. I hate, when you find characters and writing you enjoy, for the story to be over so soon.

Note: I also looked at the backlist for this author and this was the only m/f story I could find. Most others are m/m and I've not been in an m/m mood for a while. I really like this authors style and need another chick-lit "go to". Oh, well...

2 -- The price is a bit more than I would normally pay for a first time read by an author. So, why did I? Well, somehow I added this book to my "to read" list in 2012. At the time, I noted the price as being too high, nor was it available for Nook at the time [didn't have a Kindle 'til late 2012]. I was looking through some of the listopia stuff on GR -- do that sometimes, and this one was on a list I was perusing about "hidden gems". SOLD!!

3 -- Nothing else really. I was sad to see it end.

This one kept me up wanting to see what happened next. These two were just fun to watch. You never knew what she would say or how he would react. He loved to say or do something to get a rise out of her. She was so predictable in the rise, but not in what she would say. Had me snorting in places. Real fun!

I wish I had more m/f from this author to read. I do have a few of her m/m's on my list when that mood strikes me. I'm betting they will be just as good, just as fun as this.

Goes to show you, you don't have be a 4 or 5 star read to be a really good book.

Happy Reading!

This book was short and sweet. How two people knew they were in love since Kindergarten, but hated each other at the same time. There love was made with Whips and Chains, but they made it happened. It worked for them, and they were both stubborn, to give in. Love the comical part of the books how they treat each verbally, but can have the most explosive sexual encounter ever. Loved Lord Ironman and Pepper, what a hoot. Oh and the mom's how comical were they, they were giving there kids a drugs, to make them sleep. Great book Ms. Celeste.

DNF @ 33 %

No rating because I didn't make it far and because it's probably the case of "it's not you, it's me". The characters are just too weird for me. I don't understand them. The banter is a bit too over-the-top for my taste.

In the end it was the first sex(y) scene that sealed the DNF deal, though. I was uncomfortable by how the heroine's lack of consent was just ignored by the hero (I don't care if she got off afterwards).

When the book started out I wasn’t sure if I was going to go the distance, but I'm so glad I did. There's a definite quirkiness to the characters, their relationship, their banter, sex, and the writing.

Jaime Dalton is an NFL player needing a PA. Cass Pendleton is an out of work school teacher needing work - it's an economically desirable match. The problem is, they know each other from childhood, there are plenty of memories of mutually shared personality clashes that make you think this is going to be a personally undesirable match.

Jaime and Cass, aka Lord Ironman and Pepper Potts, grew on me. They really turned out to be a great pair, and I loved their “I hate you” line, this is a phrase very well known to all in our household, so it held personal affection for me, and I seriously laughed out loud at times about it. Jaime asked Cass to lift her breasts for him -
J: “That’s it, baby, lift them high. Oh yeah, Pepper, that looks nice”.
C: “I still hate you.”
J: “Hate me all you want, but you lust after me, and that’s all I need to know.”

And, after Cass had been away from Jaime for a bit of space -
“I still hate you.” He just laughed. “Come home, Pepper, I miss you hating me to my face.”

I liked Cass - her intelligent, independent air, that she didn’t know anything about football, that Jaime was a childhood frenemy who received no adulation for his sporting prowess from her. He becomes more than her employer; he becomes a confidant, friend and lover. However, along the way, there are moments when Cass is not sure how Jaime really feels about her, how she feels about him. Are they just having fun or is this arrangement going somewhere?

I really liked Jaime. He was self-assured, bordering on painful at times, sexy, sensible, and a guy who loved their banter and snarkiness, that Cass didn’t treat him like someone special, that she was grounded, didn't lust after his money, and had a brain in her head. He was developing feelings for Cass, you could just feel it in the way he regarded her, but were they deep enough, and why didn't he move her into his room? Was there something in the way? Just how strongly did he care?

The things that stopped it from being 5 stars for me were - the hiring of Cass was somewhat expedient, the mystery as to who was behind the scenes causing trouble, was an easy guess; but I feel that these parts of the book were very much secondary to the interesting romantic and sexual advancement of the protagonists. The character development - childhood competitors, opposites, to sexy partners, (with a kink), to actual lovers – plus the banter and the sense of camaraderie were the most central and satisfying themes of the book, and I appreciated this very much.

Once again Mercy Celeste delivers a nicely written sexy, sexy read – lord above the NFL sideline phone sex alone was worth it - interesting characters, great chemistry, no great angst; rather a simmering tension, which helped the book move along nicely. This is, yet again, a different model from the other books of hers I have read. I love the mixing up of themes, characters and style.

I seriously didn’t want work, cooking, family, talking in general, or sleep to get in the way of me reading this book; however, I’m crazed when I don’t sleep so this was vetoed by my (selfish) family. I must say that I highly recommend Wicked Game as a sexy, enjoyable read.

OK I really, really enjoyed this story. I loved the adversarial nature of Cass and Jaime's relationship. He was used to people caving because he's a gorgeous professional football player, but not Cass. He dishes it out and she shovels it right back to him. I loved their fights! Or "foreplay" as one of the mom's said, lol. I liked that Cass didn't want anything to do with his money besides what he contracted to pay for her job. She didn't want the designer clothes, she chose a wagon style car (granted, it was a Mercedes). She even talked about getting her own place at some point. And I loved seeing them both start bending a little bit in the relationship -- realizing that their preconceived notions (which really seemed kind of like protection from the other) might not be as solid as they once believed. But it was an all around great story. You know they're going to fall into bed at some point, but the way it happened -- slowly, and with resistance, lol -- seemed so natural for their relationship. I loved how just hearing what Cass would do for Jaime made him horny. And I loved how it ended. How romantic! Must be nice to have all that money at your disposal, lol! I'll definitely look for more from this author.

Wow! I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked this book. Made smile quite a bit. Sure, the baddie in this was so obvious and ridiculously overdone. (Like seriously? I wanted to slap so many characters for not even suspecting that person! Really? You honestly can't think of anyone else who would be a threat? -_- ) I also hated the ending, but boy, was this steamy!

I loved the character interaction. Both of them act as if they hate each other, but really, it's a lot more like banter. Mildly reminded me of Jaine and Sam from Mr. Perfect (by Linda Howard). I was genuinely amused at each of the character's retorts.

Overall, thought this was a fun book with really really hot sex scenes. Kinky even, just the way I like them. Downside, plot-wise, it could really use some serious help. Honestly, I thought the book could've just gone without that "threat" and it would have been a much better story. Don't read this if you're looking for anything serious.
