J.S. Frankel was born in Toronto, Canada, many moons ago and managed to scrape through high school and university, earning a BA in English Literature and leaving no book unopened during his time at the University of Toronto. Shortly after graduation, he moved to Japan in order to teach English to the hapless residents of whichever city he happened to be living at the time.
In 1997, he married the charming Akiko Koike and their union produced two rather interesting children. Frankel and his family make their home in Osaka where he teaches during the day and attempts to write YA fiction at night.
My grandma gifted another of Mr. Frankel’s books. This one really amps things up with tons of actions and reactions. There wasn’t a dull moment at all. I liked the details of the characters and their connections. Lots of mind blowing stuff. Really enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who likes fantastic reads!

Summary: Gil’s life forever changed when his parents died leaving him with no one. He was lucky when his best friend Samatha’s (Sam for short) father took him in a became his guardian until he was of age. Things on Earth were becoming more and more difficult to them. Sam’s father, who had been a marine, was offered a job working at Farzad Industries as a security offer a job on a distant asteroid looked to be an answer to their prayers. Sam and Gil decided to work as miners to earn their way. Not the easiest of jobs, bu if they found some rare minerals it would bank them loads of credits. Miners are for the most part a rough and simple crew. Give them what they want and things go smoothly except for the few who are always looking for trouble. Sam is the youngest woman on board, but the forget her father is in charge of security and he taught her how to take care of herself. The few men who try their luck on her quickly regret their actions.
Things continue until the day that changes everything. Members of the crew begin to go missing and then a few attack and kills each other without any cause leaving the rest to wonder if their could happen to them.
This is just the beginning as thing spiral out of control. Living in space has it’s own dangers leaving Sam and Gil fighting for their lives when their ability to contact the other’s in space and Earth is cut off.
What is really happening and will they find a way to survive? This suspenseful story held me spellbound for start to finish.
J.S. Frankel takes his storytelling to another level—the underground tunnels of Asteroid Number 835, a.k.a. Harry. Protagonists Gilbert Perlman and Samantha Carver attempt to “carve” out a living, earning credits by mining a rare ore (tishirium) coveted by world powers.
Sam and Gil find themselves between a rock and hard place for their short duration on the asteroid, under head of security, Mr. Carver, Sam’s father. Potential cave-ins, claustrophobia, inability to get along with others that often led to rage-roid fights, overdosing on illegal drugs and cut-rate alcohol or, the worst—going space-happy!
Matters become progressively horrendous:
Space-happy miners are killing each other.
Others are brutally murdered by an unknown demonic assailant who seemingly passes through walls to escape detection.
There are potential, dangerous side effects from tashirium exposure, and there’s a conspiracy to keep it quiet.
As always, Frankel’s main characters are at the forefront. In order to step things up for doing the right thing, Gil is put to the test to overcome his claustrophobia and fear of flying in this well-written, vivid venture with a realistic ending. Highly recommended!
And here I read another book of Jesse Frankel. I believe he is a great story teller and I always enjoy his books. It wasn't different with that one. The story held me spellbound from the start. It is a fast-moving adventure novel. The characters were interesting, and the adventure fun. Lots happened in that story and I was always thinking, will they make it, will they survive? Because death was all around them with an suspenseful giant being. Alien?
