Nooooooooooo. Candela, you are evil. I pulled an allnighter to have it end with a cliffy? No. No. No. *fake sobbing*
I started off disliking this book, imagining it some nonsensical love triangle that has surely been done with aplomb by authors like Tarryn Fisher with The Opportunist, E.K. Blair with Bang, and Mia Asher with Arsen: A Broken Love Story. By the second chapter, I knew this was different.
There is no vindictive ex-girlfriend, misguided wife, or vengeful boyfriend.
No. Love is Louder is about the circular relationship between the present and the past and how actions sometimes have oblique yet deadly consequences. There is a sequence of events that prefaces the story and these had me confused and anxious.
As this is both character and plot driven, Candela sets it up with a premise that alludes to a dangerous secret and a love-triangle. True on the secret but not the love-triangle; still, it's a story full of subtle allusions and offhand implications.
Once the author introduces the protagonists (and antagonists), things become even more confusing. The result is a uniquely mesmerizing portrait of people caught in a purgatory between what came before and what's still to come.
Candela's adept story-telling pulls emotions from you, including but not limited to anger, sadness, and empathy.
Anger because well..... James-the-husband. Portrayed as the devil, but really is he?
Sadness because.....Mason-the-other-man. Loves deeply despite the tragic curveballs life threw his way
Empathy for...Brie-the-loving-wife, who engenders our deepest sympathy even as we know something might be deeply off-kilter about her.
This story will have you gnawing fingernails while pondering if you might be better off not knowing the truth. I simply can't wait for the next installment and pray the author releases it SOON!
