It's been Forever And A Day since I've read a zombie book, and man, I enjoyed the hell out of this self-published gem out of Australia. I'm assuming that last part, since I can find nothing about the author, and the book is set near Sydney, Austria.

Main character Quentin, or "Q," is the shining star of this book. She's a 20-something assistant kindergarten teacher at Koala Kiddies, struggling to fit and not get canned. Her best friend is an eight-year-old, Hannah, who is a member of her after-school group, Lethal Littlies. Q, of course, has been training all of her life for the upcoming zombie apocalypse, and she's ready when the SHTF - she's trained, she's outfitted, and she's got the manual - Apocalypse Z, with all of its different zombie scenarios and how to survive them. She's even training the little kids in her care.

To say that Q has a screw loose is an understatement. But she's endearing and she's quirky and she's funny as hell, and when the shit actually does hit the fan, she is the only one ready in her group to survive in the outback.

Q falls in love with a beautiful hippy who came to the school one day to sing to the kids, and Rabbit (the beautiful hippy) invites her to a vegan retreat in the outback, with his other vegan friends.

Q sighed, removed the crowbar and packed the body spray in its place. It wasn't like she'd need a crowbar.

And of course, it's out in the boonies that things go sideways, and Q quickly realizes that it's the zomb poc. Most of the hippies, of course, refuse to believe her and carry on with their retreat until they are literally hunted down by zombies. It's here that Q and her group run into another fun character, Dave:

She recognized a .22 target rifle and a .32 pump action, the kind she used sometimes on the range. His armory was better than the one they had at her club. Ash fell from the man’s cigarette.

Q spoke. “What are you, some kind of American?” She gestured to the weapons on the walls.

The man laughed. He’d need to take two steps to get to his nearest gun. Q could get to him faster than that. She relaxed a fraction, then saw something even more reassuring. On the table in front of him, beside the radio, was a book. Apocalypse Z.

Q sauntered over. “Thank God,” she said. “I thought you were some kind of weirdo.”

If I ever run into another Richard Palmer book, and especially one with Q as a character, I will definitely read it and recommend it. This book is the reason I like to read self-published books: because occasionally, you will run into a gem of a story that will make you laugh out loud, tug at your heartstrings, and root for the hero, all at the same time. Kudos to the author, whoever and wherever you are!

One last favorite quote, so I remember why I loved Q so much:

“Let me break it to them gently,” Q said to Dave. She turned to face the group. “You all understand the web of life, and how some of us are blood-sucking spiders and others are paralyzed flies awaiting death?”

Very funny in spots. I enjoyed this story although it was quite strange.
