I read this book so quickly! I had a hard time putting it down. For such a short book, I was surprised by the amount of emotional depth the authors were able to fit into the story.
This book is not a slow burn! The attraction between the main characters is immediate, and there is a lot of banter and cute moments.
I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys: -flirty tension -friends with benefits trope -complicated characters
My only complaint is the lack of an epilogue.
Thank you to NetGalley and Shameless Romantics for a review copy of this book.
4.75 out of 5…and that is ONLY because I need MORE!!
No, seriously, this was a 5/5 star read for me- talk about the cutest little MMA fighter romance I’ve ever read! I’m not a huge reader of this subsection of sports romance, but I think Sparring Partners may have changed my mind…
Kieran and Lily’s relationship was so cute to watch unfold, and for being such a short little read, we saw quite a lot happen in a very little amount of time. The emotions that both Kieran and Lily portray get very deep/heavy at times, which helped me (as a reader) grow to feel that their relationship was more authentic than if it had just been a light-hearted insta-love type of book. In the end, this book highlights that strength can come in many forms, both physically and mentally. And watching both characters overcome their fears (while also falling in love😍) made for a very enjoyable story! Now, who do I have to pester for a lil epilogue about the future, or maybe two of them: one for Danny and one for Saoirse?!
Oh, and Vovik can go fall off a bridge. I may be the one to push him (if Kieran doesn’t get there first😂).
Thank you to Shameless Romantics & Harlequin Books for this ARC!
I went into Sparring Partners expecting a basic, fun sports romance and was pleasantly surprised by the emotional depth woven throughout Kieran and Lily’s story. Both main characters carry significant childhood—and even adult—trauma, and their individual healing journeys add meaningful weight to what could have been a simple rivals-to-lovers setup.
What begins as a workplace rivalry quickly shifts into a relationship of convenience, a way for them to let off steam, and it evolves naturally into something deeper. The grumpy x sunshine dynamic between Kieran and Lilly is wonderfully done, and their chemistry is undeniable. I especially loved Kieran’s fierce protectiveness—not just toward Lily but toward his siblings, for whom he sacrificed so much. Lily’s journey toward finding a found family in the gym and among her friends was equally rewarding, grounding the romance in strong emotional ties outside the central relationship.
The tension between Kieran and Lilly is electric, and the exploration of Lily’s control kink was handled with trust, care, and authenticity. Their dynamic feels mature and well-balanced, with each character meeting the other’s vulnerabilities with genuine understanding.
The pacing overall is strong and kept me engaged from the very beginning. My only critique is that the ending felt a bit abrupt, as though there was still room for a slightly smoother wrap-up. Even so, Sparring Partners is a compelling, tension-filled romance with well-drawn characters and satisfying emotional layers. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading more from Erin Rose.
**Open Door Romance - I will be honest, I expected quite a bit of spice but was suprised with only a handful of scenes and instead a very plot driven story!
I don't know where to start. I just finished this book and oh my heart. The story was so cute and Keiran and Lily will be in my heart forever. They are my new babies.
I didn't think I would love the book as much because the fmc is an influencer, but Lily really stole my heart.
Both Keiran and Lily had a rough life and a rough childhood, I don't feel like that was worked out as much, like it was only touched on the surface, but their love story did feel whole and perfect.
Will maybe edit this review when I have thought a bit more about the story, but I really just had to talk about it right now.
Wow! I slept on this book!! I went in expecting something cute. This was actually deep and touching! I felt for the characters and truly could not stop reading!! Highly recommend
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book provided by Harlequin - Romance through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. 3.5 stars. A sweet and sexy romance between two wounded individuals, “Sparring Partners”, by Erin Rose, features a hero who is a protector at heart and a determined heroine with a troubled past. I loved how Kieran and Lily first meet, and how some antagonism blends with attraction and chemistry in their initial interactions. Kieran is a fierce protector; his devotion to his family and the affection he demonstrates, for example towards his niece, is endearing, softening considerable the “brute” MMA coach. Lily is a fighter, a woman determined to overcome the dramatic circumstances she went through. I liked the passion between them and how they surrender so totally. I enjoyed how the author described the hero, giving a very visual and impressive portrait of all that sex-appeal. I also liked the warmth and friendliness in the gym and the Chicago setting. I felt the final part of the story dragged a bit, and there was too much sex and family drama.
I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley and once I got into the story I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed seeing the main character grow over the course of the story. The pacing was well-balanced, and the plot was engaging and fun without feeling rushed. Overall, it’s a strong sports romance with a romcom feel and an entertaining storyline. I’d highly recommend it to readers looking for a good character-driven sports romance.
Strap in for a scorching-hot and emotionally fulfilling ride. I went into Sparring Partners expecting a high-heat enemies-to-lovers romance - and I definitely got one! But what took me by delightful surprise was the depth of emotion I felt for these two wounded souls whose connection was so deeply healing. The chemistry between Kieran and Lily downright sizzles, from when they're first circling each other in the early pages, to when they fool themselves that they're not that into each other (sure, Jan), to when they finally admit the truth to themselves and each other. Erin Rose's ability to combine searing spice with tender vulnerability is applause-worthy. And they introduced a cast of supporting characters that have made me hungry for their next offering! Thank you for allowing me an early read of this wonderful debut. <3
Sparring Partners is a spicy sports romance between a gym ‘influencer’ and a MMA coach. With forced proximity, ‘enemies’ to lovers (but they were never really enemies) and a whole lot of tension!
“Oh, don’t mind me, Princess.” He aimed a smirk down at her, though it didn’t have far to go. She was only a few inches shorter. “I’m just your surly neighborhood MMA coach.”
I really liked the FMC Lily - she’s fled her toxic ex and is looking to establish a life for herself in a new city. She has supportive friends, who I loved, and starts at the gym as their social media person. She’s very good at what she does and her fitness level rivals that of the gym members! But she didn’t just have physical strength - it was her mental strength that really made her character shine. She’s gone through so much in her life, but is dedicated to therapy and moving forward.
The MMC - Kieran - is a MMA fighter turned coach, who’s always in ‘protection’ mode. He also suffered a traumatic upbringing and now looks after his siblings. To him family is the most important thing - and this includes his gym family. He just doesn’t know where Lily will fit in.
Despite a rough start, a self-defence video they film goes viral - so they must work together to try and boost the gym’s numbers via increasing their social media reach. Tensions between them rise on and off camera - with viewers speculating whether they’re actually together. Will they make things work off screen?
Their relationship was very rocky! They both have trauma in their past - wherein neither of them could really see how their futures were gonna go. I liked the notion of them individually not having a plan but then the developing prospect of them creating a future together.
A shout out has to be made for Seb and the gym found family! I loved how they had her back and how easily she became one of ‘them’.
Overall an enjoyable sports romance - one you might need to check your triggers for though!
ARC copy provided by Afterglow & NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
The way this author thoughtfully squeezed so much into a fairly short book is impressive. But, I have to admit, I felt like I needed more!
This was a workplace romance / friends with benefits situation. The attraction wasn’t instant, but it was a slow burn either. There’s a handful of spicy scenes, but overall the story is plot driven. There was family dysfunction, emotional depth, chemistry, banter, and some touch her & ☠️ vibes. I was here for it! I finished the audio in a few hours. The narrators really did a fantastic job!
My only complaint is that the ending felt abrupt & left me wanting more. I was listening along & the credits started rolling. I was literally like, wait. What?! At least give us a little epilogue! After all that, I needed to hear more about their HEA! But, overall, I still really enjoyed it & would definitely recommend!
Thank you so much to NetGalley, The Hive / Harlequin Audio, and author Erin Rose for this ALC opportunity!
This is the first book I’ve ever read by Erin Rose, and I loved it.
This book was unexpected. I thought I was grabbing a lighthearted sports romance. What I got, instead, was a book with emotional depth and incredible characters.
Lily & Kieran both went through abusive childhoods. Lily then endured abuse as an adult at the hands of her ex. Watching her navigate that trauma and take back control of her life was inspiring.
Kieran learning to deal with his own trauma and realize that he deserves happiness too was no less inspiring.
I wish there had been more of a conclusion with Lily and her ex when he’s mentioned at one point in the book, but that’s didn’t detract me from the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin for this advanced reader copy.
This was such a good book! Wow the author absolutely makes you fall in love with this whole cast of characters, Kieran and Lilly have so much baggage between them that it almost is doomed from the start, but when they finally allow trust in…a wonderful story comes through. I want to find out what happens with the rest of the Sullivan clan, they were such bright lights in this love story. The humor, family bonds, friendship, love and loss is all here making this a must read.
Personally, I think that both Kieran and Lily have a bit too much emotional baggage in common. In some ways, the insta-love isn't justified, nor is the enemies-to-lovers trope, because they were never really enemies in the first place. However, the book reads like a normal contemporary romance in which MMA is just a backdrop.
I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.
This story was sort of bizarre and it definitely felt like the author wanted to write an "enemies to lovers" story rather than writing a story that had continuity or made sense.
First of all, the MMA might as well not even exist for how little it's mentioned. They work at a gym, and there is a fight (that we never see), but beyond that...there is no point to that qualifier.
Lily and Kiernan are also not enemies and never are. He dislikes her because she's hot and he thinks shes "dumb" for working social media, and she thinks he's hot, exclusively. So idk where we got the enemies from. They only sleep together because Lily accepts a date in order to "get back in tune with her sexual self" and Kiernan basically says "I can do it better" which translates into them doing a performative fwb situation that never makes sense because they sleep together the once and immediately go straight into dating.
The pacing of this story also does not make sense and doesn't have a clear narrative. Lily getting a new job to escape from her abusive ex is the starting point but we only see the ex once and nothing really happens? Not saying the character isn't abusive, but most of her growth from that relationship happens OFF PAGE. She has "taken a year" to learn about herself yet we don't see any of it. The book just starts with her having done that with one meeting with her ex that produces nothing. Not even a fight from her MMA boyfriend!
Kiernan also has family drama and has custody of his siblings and that's mostly only used to show us why he thinks he can't be in a loving relationship. The one time we interact with his extended family, is wrapped up in a single chapter with the most predictable outcome.
This story had no tension at any point. They didn't have anyone trying to break them up (crazy when you realize how much trauma they have), no one inquiring about their relationship even though they're making out in social media videos FOR THEIR JOB, it was strange! Like it was basically instalove with a dash of therapy speech that really went nowhere but an abrupt ending.
Speaking of the social media, we went a little too far into the Gen Z of it all and crossed the line into this is inappropriate. Maybe that makes me an old head, but why are you making sexual videos for your workplace socials.......like when has that ever been appropriate? lmao. Lily starts off recording self defense clips to build clientele for the gym (why not people actually fighting considering this is a fighting gym??), and every single video she makes is so sexually charged, it's unbelievable. I can understand playing into the "we have a hot staff member" thing but it felt like the purpose of her job turned into oogling her man on IG/Tiktok known as HIT IT! in this this universe and became less about....actually doing her job to get more members into the gym (even though they pretend this happens).
The story then ends extremely abruptly but with an "I love you" so I guess that makes it okay?
To add, the way it was written wasn't helping. It felt like it clearly wanted to be a dual POV story, but instead was written in 3rd person but would constantly switch speakers like, mid sentence sometimes. It made it confusing to know who was actually supposed to be talking and when. It also had weird time jumps? Like, we'd be talking about something and it's implied that it's happening in the future and the next chapter starts AFTER the thing has happened? For example, they make a big deal about Kiernan asking Lily to go to his sister's wedding as that "breaks their fwb rules" (80% into the story they're still telling that lie), and then you straight up don't even SEE THE WEDDING?? You don't even see them getting dressed or going to the wedding! We only see 30 minutes of reception and the morning after. Why was that even a major plot point?? There are so many more examples of this.
This had so much promise especially with everyone having a traumatic backstory but this really felt like attempted tropes in a trenchcoat with no further thoughts about how to actually make the story make sense.
Ok I loved this book!!! The feel of the book had me sucked in. It’s funny, deep, understanding, and some sprinkle of spice 🤭. I needed more honestly; I felt like there needs to be a second book for these characters. Plus additional ones for each of Kieran’s siblings. I honestly need a Maeve and Seb story 😍. Kieran and Lily start out in as enemies but totally attracted to each other. Like come on, the man is an MMA coach/ex contender. The man is jacked 😂 . I’d gladly be a test subject for him 😂. I loved the relationship lily and Kier had, yes there agreement was mutual but they both were harboring their own demons. But they both understood that their demons are what made them stronger. This a good romance read! Especially if you need some in depth characters with lots of banter and built up tension. Let Kieran scratch that itch 😆.
Lily, girl I just wanted to hug you. Her past is one that slit of people can connect with. It’s a very true thing that happens and I loved that about her character. She got out of a situation and bettered herself. She busted her butt and it all paid off. In more ways than one 👀. Plus we all need a Nat in our life, always the antagonist but always the safety net. Lilys group of friends reminded me that a family can be people you choose, not just blood.
Kieran, man you had me at the drool worthy body. But then comes in his family and I melted. This man dropped everything for them and I loved that. Erin did such a great job at capturing his personality. His strong traits of being a family man, protector, lover 🥰, truly make him the better man to ANYONE. Maybe except Seb, we all need a Latin daddy too 😂.
I got this as an ARC from NetGalley. I 1000% recommend for a good romance read.
I don’t normally write reviews for many books, but this one deserves it…big time. I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC, as this debut novel doesn’t release until March 31, 2026.
I went into this book thinking about how refreshingly unique an MMA-focused sports romance would be in a market that seems to be saturated with hockey. As I was reading, I realized how very correct that assumption was! It was like breathing fresh air into sports romance. There’s definitely space for MMA-focused romance…and Kieran and Lily’s story is a perfect starting point.
This book was so beautifully crafted. The characters are written to have their flaws, but to be honestly human as well. The authenticity of their dialogue and actions made their story so approachable for all types of romance readers. Kieran and Lily just feel so real and genuine…like people you could be friends with. Their banter had me giggling and their struggles brought tears to my eyes. And their…inventive…interludes leave the reader deliciously breathless. I definitely got attached to these two!
Supporting them is a whole host of family and found family, all of whom are important in developing the MMC and FMC. I’m hopeful that some of these characters will also receive their own stories in future books…they definitely deserve to be explored. Oh! And Kieran’s niece calling him “Kiki”?!? Be still, my heart!
My only wish for this book was that it could have been longer! I took much longer than usual in reading it because I didn’t want it to end. To the publishers at Harlequin, you chose well with this book. Your readers will clamor to see more from this author duo! And to the authors, thank you for creating such a sweet (and spicy) story to share with your readers. Looking forward to more!
3.75 stars Okay, so this one surprised me in the best way. I went into Sparring Partners expecting a fun, slightly intense rivals dynamic but it's actually a lot more layered than that. Yes, the tension is there (and done really well), but what stood out most to me was how much emotional depth Erin Rose brings into the story. The "sparring" isn’t just in the banter or the competition but it's also in the characters' pride, insecurity, ambition, and the need to prove something, both to others and to themselves. The leads feel very real—messy in a believable way, not just for drama. Their dynamic builds gradually, and the push-and-pull never feels forced. You can tell exactly why they clash, but also why they can't fully walk away from each other, which makes the tension land so much harder. Also, the dialogue?? Sharp, quick, and actually memorable. It has that slightly biting edge without losing the emotional undertone, which is not easy to pull off. That said, I do think the pacing toward the end speeds up a bit. After such a strong buildup, I wanted just a little more time with the emotional payoff. It's satisfying, but it could’ve been a bit better. Overall, this is one of those books that gives you the all the tension and all the feels. If you like character-driven stories with complicated dynamics, emotional stakes, and a rivalry that actually means something, this is definitely worth picking up!
Thank you very much to Edelweiss and Harlequin for the ARC!
I went into this expecting a cute little MMA romance, a rivals to lovers, with some spice. Honestly, these cute cartoon covers be out in the world misleading people. I never get quite what I’m expecting… good thing I love a good surprise!
And what a surprise this one was! What I got was not quite what I expected and I loved it! The characters both have traumatic pasts, that adds to the depth of the story and the characters.
Kier is tall, handsome, built, and every bit focused on his siblings and the gym he works at succeeding while keeping the peace. His life has routine and structure….until Lily.
Lily comes in appearing to be all sunshine and rainbows. All cute dances and living the life of an influencer. But she’s running from a painful past.
I loved the natural progression of rivals to just being two people letting off steam, to learning more about each other, to ultimately falling in love. She learns to rely on him, and he learns to rely on her. They become each others safe spaces, And isn’t that really what loves about? Finding that person you can trust with your heart, that will be a safe place to land?
The chemistry is good, the spice isn’t as heavy as I expected, but that’s totally fine, a good story doesnt need it.
I wish this book was longer. There’s definitely plenty of room for more exploration of the characters, their backstory, and so much more. I sincerely hope to see more books from this author with the same characters, or novella’s.
I do want to warn anyone reading, to make sure to check any trigger warnings!
A big thank you to netgalley, and Harlequinn for this e-arc! This is definitely a book I’ll be adding to my recommendation list! I’ll be recommending it to friends and followers.
4.5 🌟 I absolutely love forced proximity (literally- workplace romance, they can’t escape each other 🤣) and when the MMC and FMC think they can be FWB and no strings attached… feelings will always happen and I am here for it!
We had one awesome MMC! Kieran was complex yet strong and not whiny like some MMCs are portrayed in books I’ve read before and I love it!
Lily was very relatable as well.. I don’t want to spoil anything but we see how she handles and has grown from a past situation into her own strong, independent person and I loved it!
They definitely both had the wrong preconceived notions of each other so it was heartwarming reading their love story!! I loved their story, their perfectly imperfect story. I like a good fast paced romance with real relatable people who have went through real things, from family problems to domestic violence (TW).. this book has it all and portrays all of it in a beautifully weaved together story with a satisfying ending!
I would love for this to be a series because I am also invested in all the side characters!!
Just finished Sparring Partners and I already miss these characters 😭🥊
I’m such a sucker for found family dynamics and this book delivered that perfectly. Watching Lily slowly break down Kieran’s walls and soften his rough edges was honestly one of my favorite parts of the story. Their chemistry felt natural, emotional, and earned especially in the high intensity world surrounding the MMA ring and Southside Gym.
Kieran had that tough exterior, but Lily brought out a completely different side of him and I ate it UP.
The mix of romance, tension, loyalty, and fight culture made this such an addictive read for me. And now I’m sitting here hoping Erin Rose gives us a sequel because I’m definitely not ready to leave this world behind yet AND I NEED TO FIND OUT HOW THAT MATCH ENDED 👀
If you love: 🥊 MMA romance 🖤 grumpy/sunshine energy 🥹 found family 🔥 emotional slow softening 🖤 forced proximity …you’ll probably love this one too.
Sparring Partners is an emotional, slow-burn story that explores love, ambition, and the complicated line between rivalry and connection. Erin Rose does a beautiful job building tension—not just in the romantic sense, but in the personal struggles each character faces. You can feel the push and pull between them in every interaction.
What stood out to me most was the vulnerability beneath the competitiveness. The characters aren’t just sparring in the ring (or metaphorically); they’re guarding their hearts, afraid to lose more than just a match. That emotional depth made the story feel real and relatable.
By the end, I felt both satisfied and a little wistful. It’s the kind of book that reminds you how powerful chemistry can be when it’s layered with honesty and growth.
~NetGalley Arc~ First and foremost thank the publisher and NetGalley for the eARC. Unfortunately I had to DNF it at 20%. It just wasn’t for me. The writing style was a bit off. It felt like it should have been a Dual POV but was in third person. I got confused reading it and had to go back a couple times to remember who it was focused on. I wanted to love it so badly and tried multiple times but couldn’t enjoy it the way I had hoped. I’d definitely be open to reading more from the author. Again, I just feel like this particular story wasn’t for me. I wish the author nothing but success.
*Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the eArc*
This packed a lot more heart than I expected it to, the characters felt authentic, although at times a little surface level. For what I thought was going to be a silly goofy sports romance, this had surprising depth. It did unfortunately do the thing I hate where names for real life things are changed (for copyright I assume?) but it takes me out of the story every time. Overall very solid romance, it probably could have been longer to tie up some plot points.
This was so good and surprising in all the best ways. The title and description are deceptive in a good way, I love how deep into Kieran and Lily's characters and history the author went. I worry sometimes about books with influencers as main characters, but it was done really well here and didn't ever feel over the top or cringe. The spice level is perfect for the emotional weight of the story and I loved the chemistry between the main characters. When it clicked, it clicked perfectly.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin for this eARC!
Lily and Kieran. These two! My God! I needed more of them. Two broken adults trying to figure out what loving someone looks like while healing the hurt other people caused them in the past. I wanted to hua both of them and get in line to fight Kieran's dad and Lily's ex. I wish we could've caught a glimpse of their life together after the fight and the bia love declaration because I couldn't get enough of them.
Not gonna lie the enemies to lovers lasted like three seconds I'm not gonna sit here and be like they needed to hate each other without the entire book, but they could've hated each other for a lot longer. And it wasn't even like enemies to lovers. It was like her being out of place in him being like yeah you're out of place while you're here and her being like I Know should I leave him be like no you can stay
I really enjoyed this novel. It was easy to follow and had a good cast of characters. plus there were plenty of spicy scenes between the main characters. I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading more by the author. 💖 Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for my arc ebook copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
