Great second book

Great read. Liked it. It was very predictable. I figured it out right from the start. I liked Brooke. She is an interesting woman. Strong and when she put her mind to it fearless. Aiden was ok very hard headed. Like the supporting cast and we got to hear from. Rhys and Morgan.

Listened in the car and yet again read the end 😋

Off to the next.

*I won this novel through Goodreads First Reads*
This is a far cry from the usual angst-ridden smut I usually read! But its good to diversify :)
I read the first one after I won this one in a giveaway and I really liked it. It is a sweet, tame romance, more about the history of the people, lands, and legends over the falling-in-love-drama. These books have heartbreaking prologues that immediately suck you in. The what I like to call "hot honorable men" of these books have been horribly wronged and find themselves displaced to the States about a thousand years after their own time. Their adjustments often lead to misunderstandings, awkward moments and blushing! I enjoy the women of the series as well, they are strong and confident and are always an integral part of figuring things out as opposed to playing that "save me" kind of damsel.
The secondary characters in these novels are also wonderful, they are vivid and fun, sweet and more than just props. It was great to see Rhys and Morgan again...well...rhys anyway *wink*
There is a bit of a build up as we get to know the characters, and while I understand its importance, Brooke's story didn't do much for me and the build up was kind of...well, I was just ready for them to meet already! Once they did though, things really got moving.
Will read more of this series and more from this author.

This book was just as good and as the first book in the series! Listen and Read available on KU. Props yet again to the narrator, Justine Eyre, who is still freaking fantastic! It is just so rare for me to find an audio that completely consumes me to the point where I would rather listen to it than read it myself. Only a couple narrators that I have found get me like that and Justine is definitely one of them.

I am loving how this series is set up. This book itself could almost be a standalone, if not for the underlying progressing secondary story taking place in the background, and the fact that the characters from the first story make an appearance bringing the series full circle! I love seeing the previous characters, it gives the whole story a homey feel that makes me feel like I am apart of something! We get way more into the secondary story here as we discover more details about what is playing out in the faery realm, the intrigue and betrayals are starting to heat things up there.

Aidan our MMC, has been kidnapped on his wedding day by faerie princess Celanynn who is hell bent on having him for herself. Attempting to bargain for his freedom and wanting nothing more than to stay for his wedding he pleads to be allowed to keep his honor and fulfill his vows to his betrothed. Celanynn instead wipes him from history and changes time so that he never made the vows to begin with. Enraged Aidan vows to get his revenge and to never be her pet. Celanynn in turn, collars him and transforms him into that very thing. Now he must carry out his duties as a grim.. for centuries, that is until he attempts to escape, and is called forth by a witch who looks hauntingly like his past love. Brooke out of control of her powers has nowhere left to turn. Tarot reading after tarot reading she sees a dog in her future.. set on facing it and pleading for help controlling her gift she calls apon this dog.. only to find instead a very large, naked celtic warrior has crashed landed into her apartment.. (lucky wench). Now she must deal with this man, his unbelievable past, and these feelings he stirs within her.. before the fae come to take him back...

I can't wait to dive into the next one!

The Grim Series by Dani Harper

FYI: this is a short review of the series so there will be a bit about each book in the review.

I loved this series and read all 4 books in a row [Storm Warrior, Storm Bound, Storm Warned, Storm Crossed]. Well actually I listened to all 4 books – I found it easier than trying to figure out the pronunciation of the occasional bit of Welsh. The narrator was outstanding – good use of voice, good pacing, and she got to figure out how to pronounce the Welsh.

The setting is Wales, the Nine Realms of the Tylwyth Teg [the Fae or Fair Folk of Welsh legend – if you're thinking of Tolkein's elves forget it – although impossibly beautiful most of them are NOT pleasant and tend to look upon others as toys or pawns], and modern Washington State. The author mixes the politics of the Nine Realms, the Wild Hunt, Grims [a Grim is a great black dog that serves as a herald of death], and modern Washington with a side order of Ren Faires. She does a good job of giving you what you need to know about Welsh history and mythology within the story flow without burying you in facts.

Storm Warrior
Hero: Rhys, a Welsh warrior who fought against the Romans approximately 2000 years ago. After escaping from the Romans he is captured by the Tylwyth Teg and turned a Grim.
Heroine: Morgan, a Washington veterinarian, visits Wales as part of a tour. She keeps seeing this huge black dog everywhere they go and feels sorry for it and offers it kindness. After returning to Washington she is attacked and would have died, should have died, but the Grim intervenes sacrificing his immortality to save her. He is badly injured but she is determined to save him, taking him home to care for him after the surgery to save his life. She is very surprised to find a naked man in place of her dog the next morning, almost as surprised as he is…

The remainder of the story involves Rhys finding a place in Morgan's world and Morgan's life – with many complications thrown in by the Tylwyth Teg – on the way to their happily ever after.

Storm Bound
Hero: Aidan, a 12th century Welsh blacksmith, is taken by Fae princess on his wedding day. His refusal to dishonor his fiancée and come to her bed enrages her and he is changed into a Grim until he agrees.
Heroine: Brooke, a modern day witch who accidentally saves Aiden from death. Since the princess is not happy to have lost her toy complications result.

Storm Warned
Hero: Liam is a musician whose world crashed when his wife was unfaithful – in living color on YouTube. He is now a reclusive farmer who has given up music in all forms.
Heroine: Caris is an 18th century Welsh farm girl with a gift for music that is truly magical. Taken by a plotting Fae princeling, Caris and her ability to influence others with her music is 'stored' for future use by turning her into a Grim. Complications ensue…

Storm Crossed
Heroes: Trahern, a Fae sorcerer, becomes part of the Wild Hunt in his efforts to save his twin brother, Braith, from the machinations of their mother who has turned him into a Grim.
Heroine: Lissy Santiago-Callahan, the single mother of an autistic child who seems to have access to great magical powers.
Time passes while they ride with the Hunt and Trahern continues to attempt to free Braith, but to no avail. Then suddenly Braith attaches himself to a child, a human child, and refuses to leave. Trahern is fearful but comes to realize that he too wants to protect the child, and the mother. Both Trahern and Lissy feel that mortal and immortal have nothing in common but they find they do. And yes, complications arise both from the Fae world and from the real world difficulties of raising an autistic child.

Each story serves well as a stand-alone but there is a lot character overlap. Can you read them without having read them all or in the right order? Sure, but I think reading them in order enriches the stories but that may just be me. There is also appears to be a series arc going on with Lurien, the Lord of the Wild Hunt, and Gwenhidw, widowed Queen of the Fae.

The Grim series of this writing:
Storm Warrior
Storm Bound
Storm Warned
Storm Crossed

I truly hope the author continues the series…

First Reads Review - Storm Bound by Dani Harper

I'm probably still getting used to certain conventions within romance, and within paranormal romance. When I picked up this book (provided by the GoodReads First Reads program), based on the description and the look of it, I was thinking this was going to be hot and heavy from the start. I expected sex, and lots of it, especially from the two main characters. So it was slightly disappointing that the two main characters don't even meet until over 100 pages into the book, and don't have sex until after 200. Now, I know, that might sound a little shallow, but the plot is such a slow burn here that, for me, it was an issue.

Part of the problem, really, was that the book takes so long to set up what happened to Aidan and why he's as angry as he is, what he lost, etc. And that was fine, if not terribly compelling. It was slightly obvious to see that the author was doing a fair bit of world building, pushing forward the larger story of the faery realms and the characters that recur from book to book. Having not read the first book, I didn't feel lost, but I wasn't as invested in those characters, and I wanted more of the focus to be on Aidan and Brooke. I liked their characters and enjoyed their interactions. The story definitely suffered for me because it took so long for them to meet. It condensed their arcs and made me impatient as I read.

It didn't help matters that the main obstacle of the novel was dealt with in about five pages. The story was quite well put together, the pieces fitting together nicely. The evil fae was all set to cause some trouble, and given the pacing of the story it was a shock to reach the last thirty pages or so and just have everything end. The book might have been headed for resolution, but there was such an abruptness about it, like the author cut the story short by a hundred more pages. Which is all right, I guess, but was a let down for me. Given how much Aidan talked about his plan, and how everyone was worried about it, to have that not play a part at all in the ending was unfortunate.

There were good parts, obviously. The writing was solid and the characters fun. The sexy parts were indeed sexy, though without an awful lot of variation. Still, it was all fun and I enjoyed reading most of it. I just wish it could have handled the ending a bit better, because that spoiled things for me. Though it was good enough for the most part, I'm left giving it just two stars out of five.

I absolutely loved this book, would have finished it sooner if I had the reading time, I really didn't want to put it down, in fact when it was downloaded to my kindle first thing on the release day I meant to only read for half an hour cause it was too early to get up but when I checked my clock next 2 hours had passed! That's how much it sucks you in, you don't even notice the time!

I loved Aidan and Brooke and I was so excited to discover that Brooke is good friends with the heroine from the previous book Morgan! The series is definitely building to an event I think and I imagine any other Grims that escape service may just find themselves close to Aidan and Rhys' homes and meeting with them. Perhaps by the Queens design. I wouldn't be surprised to find she influenced their escapes and where they ended up.

I think the escaped Grims are going play an important part in restoring balance to the Faery realm and I can't wait to see how they do and who gains freedom next! I also found myself wondering if all Grims are male or if females were turned into Grims too? Guess we may find out as the series progresses and I'm looking forward to the next book!

I hope Lurien, Lord of the Wild Hunt, will make some more appearances, I'd like to see the Queen reappear too, she was mentioned in this book but we didn't see her as we did in the previous book.

***Edit***
I've now listened to the audio as well and I love the narrator and how she reads the characters!

I am a sucker for anything fae. Well, more like anything fae and male . This is book two in the Grim Series. Just like in, Storm Warrior (book #1), Harper created a unique twist on the Black Dog mythos and the ancient Welsh Tylwyth Teg (fae) and wove it into a tale set in our modern world. Each book has a romance between a modern time heroine and a hero who had been kidnapped by the fae and turned into a Grim for the fae’s amusement or for punishment. The men break free of their curse, but find themselves in a new land (America) and dealing with a world that has moved on without them, all the while trying to avoid being recaptured by the fae, because we all know the fae don’t like to lose. Harper has created touching stories about love and loyalty with an added bonus of humor. What do you think happens when you take a Welsh man born 1000 or 2000 years ago and drop him into the life of a modern woman? Exactly!

Storm Bound is about Aidan ap Llanfor. He was taken by the fae princess Celynnen on his wedding day because she wanted a toy. When he wouldn’t become her lover she turned him into a Grim. He finds an unlikely friend in the Lord of the Wild Hunt, Lurien. I have to admit Lurien is my favorite character and he plays a prominent role in this story. He has watched The Nine Realms Kingdom fall into chaos after the king was murdered. The queen is barley holding on to power and the unbalance in the fae world is leaking into ours. He has an agenda and providing Aiden with a chance to escape will further his own plans.

Brooke is a witch with real powers based in earth magic. She finally has her own shop where she creates spells to help and heal people. Lately she has been getting a lot of magical signs like the exact same tarot card reading nine times in a row. When a spell goes wrong, or maybe right, she brings Aidan into her life. He is full of vengeance for the one who took his life away 1000 years ago and still clinging to a memory of an old love.

The main story of the book is the romance between Aidan and Brooke, but the subplot that runs through the series about the Tylwyth Teg and what is happening in their kingdom is what appeals to me the most. Harper has done a lot of research in Welsh mythology and earth magic. Sometimes the amount of information included overshadows the story in places. I liked book one a little better, but having Lurien with his flowing black hair and black leathers riding the fae horse Bayard in the Wild Hunt just makes my heart go pitter patter. I am also thrilled she connected the two books through a friendship between Brooke and Morgan from book one. The two ex Grims meet. Makes me think Haper has some other hidden subplot cooking.

I have such big love for this book and can not wait to see the series progress!!! This is such a wonderful blend of modern urban fantasy and Celtic myth! These are not sweet fairy stories, they are based on the traditional tales where the fae are beautiful but cruel. From my youth I recall being fascinated with the Tylwyth Teg, Sidhe and all the the dark Welsh myths. This is a terrific adult revisit of those myths that held me enthralled.

I really liked Brooke from the start, she is so loving and aware of herself. When she meets smexy Aiden, sparks fly, well that and a very well placed punch! I love their dynamic and really felt them connect. The romance is quick but the feeling ring true. I am willing to believe in love/lust at first sight. Sometimes your heart just knows before the head has a chance to catch up.

The smexy stuff is delicious!! Aiden is definitely the Alpha kind of guy I love. He is dominant in all the right ways!! The bedroom door is open and the smexiness happens a couple times!! Loads of steam detail, but not quite as far as a full erotic romance. I am all for the mainstream hotness this book dishes out!

The story this time is very involved, this progress at a steady pace and then speed up in the end. The twist wasn't much of a surprise, but no less enjoyable. Great pacing in the story, it really flowed as the details were revealed.

The narration bounces between the POV of the two leads, but there is a bonus when we see POV of some supporting characters. It makes for a more rounded story and you really get insights into all, especially the villains of the tale. You really get to understand the fae better, I may now have a little crush on the Lord of the Hunt, is it too much to hope he will get a HEA?

I love the way this book connects with the other, I did worry at first there would be no connection. It takes time and you will have to be patient, but when it reveals itself, it is wonderful! I loved the first meeting of Aiden and Rhys, classic!

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Justine Eyre, who is fabulous!! She has a delicious way with the smexy Welsh accents, never could resist a brogue! I loved her energy in the read, she had a real feel for the story and just when speed things up to match the action. I am all about finding more of her reads!! She had quite the task with several male voices and the accents. Terrific match for this series!

Overall, I am in love! I am totally hooked and can not wait for the next book. The concept and myth carry this romance over to a real winner in my book! Ms. Harper certainly has a way of crafting engaging characters into a dynamic story. I am totally hooks. The only negative her is I have to wait until 2015 for the next book!!!

Blacksmith Aidan is kidnapped on his wedding day, and when he refuses to become the pairing of his cruel Far capture she turns him into a Grim - a supernatural hound that is the harbinger of death. For centuries he suffer his enslavement until at last his escape attempt aligns with modern day witch Brooke's spell to summon a canine guardian and suddenly he's human again and ready to pursue his vow of revenge against his former mistress - despite the irresistible draw to his witch savior.

I liked the second Grim book even more than the first. The beginning - in which we are privy to the agony caused by the capricious Far princess as she steals both Aidans future and his past - really grabbed me. I loved the strength of his spirit which is never broken over the interminable years of his servitude. I loved equally strong Brooke - in both magic and will - and I thought that the people in her life were great, I also really liked the subplot with the Lord of the Hunt (and hope he gets more screen time in future books). Plus I thought the cameo of the past pair was woven in effectively.

If I had a nit with the story, it is that there is so much that is great that is setup in the main conflicts in the story- that I wish the resolution hadn't been quite so quick and easy-utb that didn't lessen my enjoyment of the story.

So Storm Bound ended up being my favorite of Harper's stories so far and I am looking forward to more.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4
REVIEW:
I had the pleasure reading this book and also getting to listen to on audio. I just could not pass up the chance to have Justine Eyre read to me. This was a good second book in Dani’s Grim series. I really enjoyed all the magic and Welsh mythology in the series. But there were parts that were a little slow for me. I felt that the book started off really good then it slowed down a bit. Right up until Brooke meets Aidan.
I really enjoyed Brooke and Aidan’s relationship and the connection that they have. Brooke’s cat’s really tried to steal the show with their demanding ways :) .
All in all this was a good book and I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series. I wonder who it could be? Maybe a certain Lord of the Hunt?

Disclaimer:
I received a complimentary copy of the book from Montlake & Brilliance Audio in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

Black Mountains, Wales - 1124.

Aiden was taken on his wedding day by Celynnan who is a Fey Princess. She kills his fiance', binds him as a Grim, and keeps him for almost 1000 years while he resists her without fail.

Walla Walla, Washington - 21st Century.

Brooke is a witch and owns a shop where she does readings and sells merchandise. She is a strong believer in always doing good. During one of her spells, she unintentionally calls Aiden forth and he changes from Grim back to human.

Aiden has sworn to kill Celynnan for what she's done to him over the centuries and for the death of the woman he once loved. Will he be able to accomplish that and still keep the woman he has started to love in this time? Follow along with them in this story of pain, renewal, and hope. There are hurdles to cross and mysteries to be solved.

Dani pulled me into her story and kept me turning the pages...at times on the edge of my seat.

Another one I stayed up WAY too late to finish

I chose my rating because I'm reviewing this at nearly 5am because I couldn't put it down despite desperately needing sleep! LOL! I would absolutely recommend this book and, while it could (I imagine) be read on it's own, I would also recommend starting with book one in the series since those characters DO make an appearance in this book. Granted, they don't play a huge part in this book but...if you have a Kindle Unlimited subscription you can do what I did for both book one and this book, as well as the rest of this series, and just borrow them. So far I am enjoying the series and this book makes it 2 for 2 that I rate quite highly! I can hardly wait to start reading book 3...but, considering it actually IS 5am now ( hard to type reviews on my Kindle when I'm this tired), and I have an appointment in the morning... I will, indeed, need to wait to start reading! LOL!

I really, really enjoyed this book and think that if you love Paranormal Romance than this is a great series for you. I could not wait to read it even though I did not read the first book (an oversight I plan to correct very soon) and found that in my opinion, that did not in any way take away from reading this second book. I loved this book and found that I could not put it down. I was captivated by the characters of Aiden and Brooke and their story. My only negative is that I have to wait for the next one but hope that reading the first book will placate me until then!

I actually liked this better than book 1 (Storm Warrior). It works just fine as a stand alone as well. Morgan and Rhys do appear in this one but reading book one isn't necessary to understand this one.

I really liked Brooke and Aidan. I appreciated Brooke's devotion to her Code. I liked the ending and Brooke's ability to protect not only herself, but her friends. Well done!

This is the second book of the Grim series by Dani Harper. I do a lot of driving, my job is an hour away, so I spend it listening to kindle unlimited titles with free audible narration. I love paranormal, fantasy, and romance titles. This book is all three.
Do not proceed if you haven't read the first book.
The books are about Grims, messengers of death in the form of a large black hound. The ones so far were previously human men that were enslaved by the fey and forced to spend the next 100 or so years being Grims. They meet the loves of their lives and vow to fight the evil fey. You encounter good fey creatures that help them when showed kindness or honor.
Great characters, even the side characters are very likeable and have some depth. I love that you learn a little about Welsh mythology and culture while reading. I can't wait to see what book 3 has to offer.

Aiden, the hero has been turned into a grim, a dog that visits with human right before death. The Fae princess is punishing him for not giving into her desires. The Lord of the Hunt has offered to let him run. When Aiden runs, he heads for the "New World". But the Lord finds him and during their fight Aiden is snatched to Seattle, Washington.
Brooke is a powerful witch that is trying to enhance her powers by calling on El Guardia, a dog that will help focus her powers. But El Guardia is not summoned, Aiden the Grim is. Snatched out of the battle and through her skylight. Where the silver torc that binds him to the princess comes off.

Things will get busy and heat up from there.

Aidan ap Llanfor is from Wales. He was captured by Celynnen, a Fae Princess from the House of Thorn, in the year 1124 and made into a Grim. Brooke is a witch and Aidan literally falls into her life one night. Aidan and Brooke’s passion is magical. Brooke is captivated by Aidan. Brooke and Aidan are good together. She wants to believe him but how can he be from the past? Is he crazy? Aidan wants to be with Brooke but he must deal with the Fae Princess that stole his life first. Can Brooke convince Aidan they belong together before it is too late? It was nice to see Rhys and Morgan again from the first book. I also enjoyed Lurien, Lord of the Wild Hunt. I hope she writes more about him in one of her future books. I look forward to the next book in this series.

Better than the first

Brooke's knowledge of magic makes it much easier for her to understand that there is more than humans know or understand she is definitely more accepting...Aiden seems to understand more about the current times and was more willing to adjust...writing was terrific as in the first book but the characters seemed to mesh better...though I do wish to have gotten more of the two couples together

Great story

I really enjoyed this book. The story kept me involved and excited about what would happen next. Most important is the author does not repeat what she's already told you. Everything she writes is part of what keeps the story going, without having to read page fillers to make the story longer. Also love characters.

Fun, but just like the first book, I feel like the best plot ideas were not emphasized or explained enough. Still a quick refreshing read to sandwich between heavier books, and I’ll likely get around to the next two in the series.

Although I read the descriptions for the next two, and George doesn’t get his own book?! WTH.

Once upon a time, a very close friend told me that life is too short to waste your time on books you don't love.
For the longest time, I ignored this advice.

But. I just couldn't get through this one. I TRIED, but just couldn't get into it.
I'll definitely give the next in the series a try to see if the author improves their writing, but as for now; yikes man.

Good read

Really enjoyed this book. Loved the audio version especially because of the spelling of some words. The world and story building was great and I loved being able to hear about the characters from the 1st book.

I recommend this book and I will be reading/ listing to the next one.

I didn’t care on too many levels that blacksmith Aidan was snatched out of his reality by a royal fae before he could wed his beloved. Even moreso, Aidan later bargains and finds himself in the company of lookalike fledgling witch Brooke centuries later as she practices a summoning spell.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series but I found this book to be boring and chaotic. Not a great match. The storyline and plot are disjointed. The connections were there but I wasn't really sure who or what the book was about or the way the story is told and unfolds. I unfortunately don't think I will continue this series.

Even better than the first

When starting a sequel I always expect it not to be as good as the fist one in a series but I actually liked this one alittle bit better than the first one in the Grimm series.
