Honestly, what even is this series lol

RECAP: Reo tells her details about the kidnapping, he released her and tried to SA but she stopped him, they're dating now, making out and etc, he makes off timed statements about stripping her, they get stopped by police, and ends with him getting a new hairdo and her dad seeing them in public.

[CW: suicide attempt, bad literature]

So, Sumire was kidnapped when she was younger and you wouldn’t know but Reo was the one who did it. Don’t worry though, things are only going to get sillier from there.

This is one of the best unintentional comedy manga on the market. It is being played very straight, with occasional moments of levity, but is actually the corniest bag of nonsense. And I mostly mean that in a good way.

The entire kidnapping plotline is off to the races when it’s revealed that all this is precipitated by Sumire’s dad being a social media phenom with his novel, as if the ‘twenty seconds of fame’ world of social media sells novels, and the crooks figure that somehow means he must be good for an astronomical amount of money.

As I say, it’s hilarious, to say nothing of the novel’s title, which is so atrocious it sounds like a teenager writing a romance after a concussion. And, making the bold choices that define true heroism, dad and mom cough up the ransom AND refuse to get the cops involved. Because kidnappers always hold up their end of the bargain.

Naturally this ends with Reo saving the day and then Sumire stops him from killing himself at the last minute. Naturally. Again, minus Sumire being the most amusingly annoying hostage ever, played completely straight.

If you are of the mindset that this is incredibly bad, but in a very fun sort of way, it’s really not a terrible time. Reo gets a haircut, he meets Sumire’s friends (I love how his 20-something self towers over them), and it turns out he’s been killing himself to make amends all this time.

I think the most believable part is that this incident was the deciding factor in Sumire’s parents splitting up and also accounts for her father’s incredibly overprotective nature. Of course, that’s on a direct collision course with Reo and Sumire’s relationship because what else were you expecting?

The clothing remains hideous, the dialogue is screamingly turgid (Reo’s line about wanting to remove clothing is about as sexy as a sack of potatoes in a dank cellar), but it just believes in itself so much I can’t help but enjoy it anyway. It can’t be intentional, but I still think the mangaka is trying their best and having fun, so who am I to complain?

Genuinely, a bunch of incredible hogwash, but very loveable in that car crash sort of way. You can imagine the Romans handing out copies when the bread and circuses were in short supply.

3 stars - it’s not worth more than that, certainly. Especially now that Reo’s changed his hairstyle. The only way anybody likes that one more is because the mangaka has their families hostage. Not that I’m invested, of course.

This went a lot darker than I expected, but I’m still really enjoying the story and I think it’s going to be a lot more lighthearted from now on. I’m really excited to see Sumire’s dads reaction, it’s definitely going to be messy.

I’m also really enjoying all of the cute dating content! It’s super fluffy and sweet 💖

Listen the audacity this book has to end on a kind of cliffy where dad is surely going to have the biggest of all meltdowns.

And they changed his beautiful pink haaaaaaaaaairrrrrr

The best part of this volume is the cops stopping Reo because they think he's a creepy older dude cosplaying a high schooler to pick up a teenage girl.

4 stars. I liked the turn of this volume after being hesitant with the previous one. The art is great, and I'm digging the heroine. I also find myself smiling at both the humor and art of this mangaka.

Peccato.

This review covers the first five books in the ”Lightning and Romance” series by Mikimoto, Rin

I am not really a big fan of the age-gap trope. Mainly it's because either the story is written well or giving me the ick.
I tell you this because it means I expect a lot from this trope before I want to spend my time buying and reading multiple volumes over several years.

I binge-read the first five volumes within one day.

I wish this story didn't try to sell itself as an age-gap story because the age gap is not the big taboo.
I won't spoil it for you, but Reo (the male MC) and Sumire (the female MC) met when they were younger. Their meeting was caused by a horrible background story, and their meeting again and romance will cause grief and worries from their families.

Sumire is new at romance and questions her sanity in falling for the bad guy who has a past as a Yakuza, but she sees a different side to Reo – he's a caring big brother, he's kind and a cat lover – so she makes advances.
Now, Reo is very adamant about not loving, nor wanting to date Sumire, but in reality, he's a cinnamon bun who blushes at her advances, and he's in danger of giving in when she's near.
I love Sumire's guts. Many female MCs in shojo are either subdued or positive in an airheaded way. She's neither. Sumire is very intelligent and acts based on her morals, giving her this older-than-her-age vibe and she seems like a person who thinks before she acts. So her dreams of love with Reo are the big thing.

There's a seven years age-gap between the MCs. Like I said, the age gap has (so far) nothing to say in the story. It progresses the sex talk (Sumire is very open and invites to this sort of conversation) so if you like a bit more steam in your shojo stories, I think this will meet your needs.

It's the cinnamon bun hero, the gutsy heroine, and the mystery of this horrible past that might split them apart, that makes me want to read this series.

Ecco, no...la coerenza qui manca totalmente.

Awww I love these two as a couple buttttt I HATE HOW THEY MET.
Ugh and now her dad is going to flip out…
“Sorry dad, I’m dating a 23 year old man…and that’s not all- He helped kidnap me all those years ago!” LOL. The mangaka was like let’s make this uncomfortable for everyone

Sumire was extraordinarily sweet as a kid. I could see how she changed his life.

There are elements of the story that I really like, but they don’t fit together very well. The relationship is moving too quickly, especially with such a big revelation.

I love the character design in this manga. I like that she is always straightforward, not thinking about what to do. There is just the right amount of tension and romance. Her clothes are quite vintage, as are all the designs, but I love them.
