Stellar Heir:

Rate this book
Jael Ked’Korhva hadn’t anticipated becoming the galaxy’s most wanted.

He hadn’t planned on picking up a strange alien artifact, either, but once it was clasped around his wrist, Jael was granted extraordinary abilities. His senses were heightened, his reflexes faster, and he could now regenerate from damage that would spell the end for others—abilities that would have been coveted even during his days as a warrior monk. Now, working as a scavenger, these powers were a boon, especially when forces from every corner of the stars wanted Jael’s artifact for themselves and would stop at nothing to get it.

What initially appears as an advantage swiftly transforms into a weighty charge. Yet, it's a charge Jael accepts without hesitation, understanding the catastrophic potential should the relic fall into the wrong hands.

Prodded onward by visions of an ancient ally and a mysterious enemy, Jael becomes a pivotal piece in a vast interstellar play of power and dominion.

A high-octane space opera that blends adrenaline-fueled martial arts with interstellar adventure, Stellar Heir is perfect for fans of sci-fi like Sun Eater by Christopher Ruocchio or The Mercy of Gods by James S. A. Corey.

I would like to thank BookSirens for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

Stellar Heir was a very cinematic read, with tons of dynamic energy, action scenes, and a lighthearted narrative tone that gave a bit of Guardians...

...and Star Wars.

Yk, your typical wonder boy adventure story, with a snarky primate sidekick and all the quirky, goofy shenanigans and banter to offset the supreme importance of being the "chosen one"!

This was a fun, galactic romp, with lots of cool fights and many different kinds of outer world races, all coming together in a fast-paced narrative that made this a quick and compelling, easy to read start to this series. This also had a bit of a video game vibe there at the end, but as a gamer that's probably my default imagining whenever the "hero" gets questy!

This was enjoyable and entertaining and i'm looking forward to whatever's next for Jael Ked’Korhva in Syndicate Moon: (Stellar Heir Book 2) because i'm sure it's gonna be a wild one!

This is a wall to wall action packed sci-fi thriller that worked really well on audio.

There was a lot of jumping around at first (ow whiplash) but eventually it coalesced into a fairly mainstreamed storyline. I love fast paced thrillers with tons of action.

The main character was a bit overpowered with his new technology (but who doesn't love cool tech too?) The living parts of the one alien space ship were awesome. Killian did a good job in general providing good descriptions of aliens and things. Like watching an action flick.

My favorite thing is when alien races don't think like humans, so it was fun to have an ape-like character with a bit of a different perspective. Hello banter for days. There's even an eventual ship pet and the less you know there, the better.

Definitely worth checking this one out on audio if you like action filled scifi thrillers!

Stellar Heir by Scott Killian is a coming-of-age, high-stakes interstellar adventure story. The story follows Jael Ked’Korhva, a former warrior monk turned scavenger, aboard the Zigzagunda. When he and his sentient humanoid simian, Goni, survey a space battlefield, he discovers an alien artifact, and his life takes an unexpected turn. Jael begins to have nightmarish visions of ghostly figures calling him the "chosen one" and providing him cryptic messages and instructions. The relic also gives him strange, extraordinary new abilities—heightened senses, accelerated reflexes, and remarkable regenerative powers—quickly transforming him into the galaxy’s most wanted individual.

The book has a diverse cast of characters, ranging from rogue mercenaries to enigmatic alien species. Protagonist Jael is intelligent, resourceful, and a skilled fighter. When he first discovers his newfound extraordinary powers and ability to communicate with alien beings, he is overwhelmed and terrified. But as the story unfolds, through experience in battles and the help of his comrades, he rises to the occasion and begins to understand the reason why he was chosen. The camaraderie between Jael and his eclectic crew adds depth to the narrative, with their interactions providing comedy and heartfelt moments.

Jael’s backstory is slowly presented through flashback scenes, revealing shocking information about his parents and his upbringing. Jael’s sidekick Goni is a very complex character who’s endearing and amusing. He proves himself to be a brave warrior in several scenes, but his unwillingness to follow orders makes him infuriating at times. The banter between Jake and Goni is filled with quips and witty comebacks that make their friendship special and add entertainment value to the story. The found family trope is strongly pronounced in the book, as Jael and his comrades look out for each other and have a strong mutual respect.

The story is fast-paced with a lot of entertaining dialogue and action-packed battle scenes. The world-building in this book is very expansive for a YA novel—readers are drawn into a universe with different species, spacecraft technologies, and complex political warfare. The cinematic action scenes are very descriptive and intense, often giving the feel of a “Star Wars” type movie in your mind!

In the first 20 percent of the book, the story jumps around a lot, introducing all of the diverse characters/species and establishing the world-building—if listening to the audiobook, it’s highly recommended to listen at a slower speed to fully grasp all of the world-building and keep track of the characters. Eventually, the storyline becomes more settled, but the pacing remains relentless throughout, making it difficult to put down. The story culminates in a cliffhanger ending that leaves readers eagerly anticipating what’s next for Jael Ked'Korhva in book 2, “Syndicate Moon”!

There is some mature content in this book, including alcohol use, violent battle scenes, and kidnapping, but overall the book is still suitable for YA readers. Aside from all the action and engaging dialogue, the story has some very powerful messages. Jael’s journey emphasizes that you cannot run from your past—the traumatic things that happen in one’s life eventually resurface to be resolved, paving the way for new challenges and ensuring that the same mistakes are not repeated. The book also has the vibe of a space LitRPG, where the characters work together to solve challenges and move on to new adventures.

Overall, Stellar Heir is a thrilling space opera with expansive world-building, memorable characters, and thrilling battle scenes. The book sets the stage for a potential epic series that could gain popularity with each new installment! With a large cast of characters and intricate storytelling, this is the perfect book to pair with its audiobook, superbly narrated by Shamaan Casey, for a fully immersive reading experience. Readers who enjoy action-driven sci-fi, rich world-building, and a wide range of characters will love this book and be eager to read book 2 in the series!

I am usually a reader that struggles with visuals. This book was the first time I didn’t feel that way, possibly because of the Star Wars vibes. I found it extremely easy to see what was happening because of that.

The most interesting plot point that I wish there had been more of a focus on was Merzi and Garlial, I love a redemption arc so here’s hoping that’s where it leads.

There were some fight scenes I felt could’ve been shorter, and a few editing errors throughout the book (nothing major, but enough to pull me out a bit).

But overall I had a good time!

Stellar Heir by Scott Killian is an action packed space opera. The more I read, the more involved I became as Jael Ked’Korhva traveled the galaxy, running from those who want what he has, an alien artifact.

“Others had the artifact, had the chance to become the Stellar Heir, but none took the simple step of putting it on.”

I loved the descriptions and the alien world Scott Killian has created. The author’s imagination amazes me. The mismatched group of characters that end up helping Jael grow with each stop along the way. We even manage to find a little romance, that spices up the novel.

I was disappointed that the story didn’t end with Stella Heir, but I would love to know what happens next.

I’d like to thank Scott Killian for the opportunity to read and review Stellar Heir.

For someone who has never read sci-fi but enjoys movies and shows like Star Wars, Dune, and Mandalorian, I really enjoyed this one!

The imagery and description was amazing and I could so clearly tell what was going on and all of the details of it all, when it could have very easily been confusing for someone who hasn’t read much sci-fi.

The plot kept me very entertained and intrigued the whole time, and I especially appreciated the sub plot (very minor, but was still there) of romance- being a prominently romance girly up until now this made me that much more into it.

Amazing action, some banter, and vibes from this one! Perfect for someone new to the genre but also a long time lover of sci-fi!

My first dip into the sci-fi world. It was a slow start for me to get into-i think this was just due to trying to get used to the verbiage. However, it has plenty of action and playful banter. I do wish there would have been more of Jael’s thoughts embedded into the book. I did enjoy the multiple POVs though!!

Steller Heir is a coming-of-age young adult space opera tale full of action, mystery, and chases across the universe. The story is authored by Scott Killian, who has one other Audible audiobook at the time of this review. This is the only story I have listened to by him as well. The audiobook’s narration is expertly performed by the wonderful Shamaan Casey, Mr. Casey continues to grow in his narration ability. He only gets better. The story feels like a space LitRPG as we observe the main characters maturing and needing to work together to solve their problems. A young group of salvagers stumble upon some discarded items in a derelict ship, yet one of the pieces attaches itself to our main character and from here the story takes many twists and turns as the assumed rightful owner of this piece of treasure will do almost anything to get it back in their possession. If you are a fan of young adult space tales, I would recommend you give this audiobook a listen.

Upon discovering this odd artifact and having it attach itself to Jael, he notices that the artifact elevates many of his physical and mental abilities. Sometimes this is discovered the hard way when facing a new opponent trying to retrieve the object for the previous owner. It is also a means by which the main character can communicate with an alien being who over time unwraps the main purpose of this object. From here, the story grows into a much more involved storyline and adventure. Many will go to any means and travel vast distances just to get the reward for this object that our characters had stumbled upon accidently. As with many good RPG-like adventures, our characters are sent on a few side-missions to retrieve an item before the NPC will provide them with the next steps in their journey and ultimate goal.

I felt that the author did a good job of building up the many characters and their backstories. They felt lifelike and multidimensional. These backstories were slowly presented to the listener via a few different flashbacks including some shocking information about Jael, his parents and his upbringing. Having his pet, many close friends and this monk martial arts training helped me to better understand him. I would have enjoyed a few more close calls for our main characters, but overall, the story had a good flow, pace and direction. It might sound like a small thing, but I did take note and wanted to give kudos as the author for using what I would call localized profanity instead of simply adopting English vernacular. Nothing upsets me more than when a society in the outreaches of space or a fantasy land has the same expletives as we do. I also found that the author crated a few unique creatures that were not simple science fiction tropes as well.

The author did a good job of bring in the importance of friendships and the dependance on them in times of trouble. Although the writing style and sentence structure felt simpler, there were some very well written parts. The story addressed the need for one to sacrifice for the good of all. As well, it delt with how one’s past emotions and the need for revenge can sometimes blind people to the purpose of their mission. Yet, Jael’s companions were always there to help and assist him in any way they could. Strong friendships and bonds were clearly portrayed in the story. Also, the main character’s ability to overcome past trauma and anxiety going back to his childhood were a part of the story as well. A bit more action and vulnerability would have made the story even better, but that is a very subjective thing.

About the audiobook’s narration, once again I have to say that I very much enjoy listening to Mr. Casey’s works. He has a smooth yet rich tone that brings the characters to life. His ability to voice many different types of characters from men, women, and even aliens and it all simply feels fluid and effortless. Yet, I know the level of effort that goes into professional audiobook recording, and I can say that his quality is right up there with the best. I have also listened to multiple different genres of books, and he puts the same effort into all his work. I do not recall any problems with audio involving artifacts such as pops, clicks, background noise, or plugs, which again shows his attention to detail and the importance of giving the listener the best quality audio he can.

For parents and younger listeners, there are a few references to alcohol use, some mature themes, and kidnapping. These are not overly emphases in the story but be aware that they exist. If one is easily offended by any of the above, please select a different audiobook. I would say that the story is more young adult in it writing style, so teen and above would be my recommendation.

In summary, I enjoyed the coming-of-age space tale, and the narration was of the highest quality. Although not a perfect story, it was paced well and the character development exceeded what I often see in the young adult genre. It will be interesting to see where the story goes from here as this is only book one in what I would assume to be a long running series.

I received a copy of this book for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.

This story was a blast to read. It had everything I wanted in a story and more. I loved the characters, the world-building, the colorful action, and the way the plot unfolded and kept me turning pages.

When I started reading Stellar Heir, the beginning felt kind of made me think I had picked up a quaint young adult book. But, as time went on, the tension ramped up and I found myself involved in a mesmerizing tale.

Stellar Heir is a serious space opera and a coming-of-age story that fascinated me and often had me on the edge of my seat.

Aboard the Zigzagunda, Jael Ked'Korva and his sentient humanoid simian, Goni, survey a space battlefield as the battle wanes and ends. When they determine it is safe to approach, they board a derelict ship that shows some promise of finding treasure. Jael and Goni are scavengers just making their way as best they can.

While aboard the vessel, Jael finds something looking like it might be worth something. It is a bracelet. Out of curiosity, he tries it on, and it locks on to his wrist and he cannot get it off. The next thing Jael knows, he is having some strange and nightmarish visions. Sometimes, the visions are of a menacing figure from his past, while others are of a ghostly figure he has never seen before who gives him puzzling and cryptic messages and instructions.

Meanwhile, there are a few factions that are seeking the artifact Jael has been connected to and will stop at nothing to get their hands on it. The artifact apparently will allow the holder to wield great power to control the galaxy.

The strongest part of Stellar Heir is its characters. There are the good guys, and the bad guys, and there is one I am not too sure about at this point.

The character called Garlial is an enigma to me. He seems to be an antagonist, but at the same time, he also seems to undergo a transformation, or is, at least, in the middle of one. Should that transformation prove to be the case, it is a testament to the skill of the author.

Goni is quite endearing. He always thinks about food and eating and can never seem to get enough. He also has an irritating tendency to not follow orders. His main role is to help Jael be grounded. Goni does this through friendly barbs and quips that makes Jael think. But Goni is also a brave warrior, and he loves to test new weapons whenever he has the opportunity.

Jael is a young man who has gotten himself caught up in something that might have him just a little over his head under normal circumstances. He is resourceful, smart, inventive, and pretty good in a fight, but some people he is fighting are pretty ruthless and have really poor attitudes. One person who also helps him is a character that comes along just a little later in the book. Her name is Merzi

Merzi is a wise young woman who has abilities to help focus Jael and approach situations logically. She is a strong, intelligent, and a tough character who adds a great deal to the story in the way of wisdom and wonder.

The baddies in this book are scary, single-minded, and relentless. One, in particular, is evil beyond imagination.

My favorite plot point comes in the development of Jael's character. It isn't all spilled out at the beginning of the book but starts out slowly and when we get the entire picture later in the tale, the reader gets to understand his motivation on a deep, personal level.

My takeaway from Stellar Heir is to remember that you cannot run from your past. I guess one could call it Karma. Those things that happen to us tend to come back and demand to be resolved. At the same time, once those issues are solved, it is time to move forward to new challenges, and not make the same mistakes again.

Stellar Heir is such a good book on so many levels. It is eminently entertaining. The story contains a full spectrum of emotional content. While all the characters are well written and well developed, they are also feel like real people - they have some flaws - some more than others. The descriptions of the landscapes are colorful and provide a great backdrop for the people to perform in.

I'm giving Stellar Heir high recommendations for a fun sci-fi story worth the time to read.

“Stellar Heir” by Scott Killian centers around the adventures of Jael and his sidekick and best friend, Goni, whose scavenging run results in the acquisition of an artifact that plunges them into a conflict and quest that may signal the end of the universe. Enemies and allies come out of nowhere, and the past and the future are inextricably intertwined.

This young-adult science fiction tale is full of nonstop action and imaginative scenarios. The story has a comic-book feel, with plenty of violence and excitement, but I would have liked a bit more depth to the characters. The requisite quest, quirky sidekick, damsel in distress, noble hero, and multiple evil villains are all present, with even an unlikely “pet”, but some of the events strained my incredulity a bit too far. This is the first book in the series, so there are quite a few dangling threads, and the world building is a bit basic, but complexity will undoubtedly ensue as stories are added. Those who like fast-paced adventures with plenty of fight scenes should have fun with this story.

Stellar Heir has plenty of action to help keep the pages turning. The battles are awesome and would be great to see them on the big screen. Stellar Heir reminded me of a little bit of Star Wars, Firefly, Vagrant Queen, Killjoys, and Dark Matter just to name a few.

Jael Ked’Korhva picks up a strange alien artifact and immediately clasps it around his wrist. Everyone in the galaxy wants the artifact. Jael never intended or wanted to be the most wanted man in the galaxy, but he is. Jael and his sidekick Goni go on the run, trying to stay one step ahead of everyone.

This strange alien artifact has granted Jael extraordinary abilities, strengthening him and heightening his senses.

I enjoyed the banter between Jael and Goni. I loved their relationship. I loved the fighting scenes. The world-building was awesome, to say the least. I had no problem picturing everything I was reading in my head as if I were watching a movie.

I highly recommend Stellar Heir to all sci-fi fans! Grab a copy of Stellar Heir today!

If you’re looking for an epic sci-fi adventure with a reluctant hero, a sidekick that’s part comedy relief, part support for the MC, and a lot of space shenanigans, then you absolutely need to read this next! Killian does an excellent job of bringing both characters and setting to life, with vivid descriptions that make it feel like you’re standing (or floating) right there in the middle of it all. This felt like part Ben 10, part Firefly, and part all a thing of its own. Jael’s history as a warrior monk hasn’t completely prepared him for what gets thrown at him in his new life as a scavenger, and I loved watching him adapt and try to navigate everything. The story moves along at a good pace, and the tension keeps you reading, making it hard to take even short breaks. This isn’t a short book, but I flew through it simply because I didn’t want to stop reading, and forgo sleep to do so. I can’t wait to see what book two has in store!

Steller Heir is a sci-fi adventure story with a boy, Jael and his monkey Gonl. Jael is forced into a space adventure after he finds a alien artifact, a bracelet he tries on and can not take off, that makes him the most wanted man in space due to his new 'powers'. Also the bracelet makes him 'see' things. Jael travels the galaxy with his friends and goes on a space opera through space as Jael grows up. It reminds me of a found family troupe too as they all like eachother as a family. I loved Gonl as a character, he is so enthralled with food and doesn't listen, kind of like a teenage boy. The most important message in this book is moving forward to new things and learning not to make the same mistakes in the future.

This is an epic scale, fast paced sci-fi full of vividly written action scenes and filled with tough, complex characters. I loved how several plotlines were running parallel but would regularly intersect, usually with fireworks!
The cleverly crafted alien races are nothing run of the mill and surprisingly- to me, at least - the chosen one trope is used to drive the plot. Worldbuilding is top shelf and written into memories, conversations or the narrative so there is no info dump. The core group is fun to travel with and their dynamic comes across well on page. Not a cliffhanger ending but a clear lead-in to further books in the series. I'll be back for more!

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narrator's tone of voice and his easily distinguishable characters.

This was a very fun space opera. Really enjoyed the found family aspects along with the star wars vibes. We follow Jael as he gets forced into a galactic adventure after finding a strange alien artifact that gives him extraordinary abilities. Chaos ensues as Jael and his companions travel across the galaxy as now he is the most wanted man in existence. Really enjoyed this YA romp through space. Had a little something for everyone including some romance and an animal companion.

Will definitely be picking up the sequel next year.

You know how we see something we’re curious about and we just can’t let it go? Can’t leave it alone even knowing we should probably walk away? In Stellar Heir, Jael finds a bracelet that he never should have picked up. Everyone wants the bracelet and Jael and his friends must fight to keep it.

There is a lot of action here. Plenty of fighting. I can’t say fighting is my favorite thing to read about but the author is quite descriptive and handles it well. The characters are handled well too. All in all, this is a very fun tale to read.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. After finishing I was left with the thought that this would have made a much better screenplay than it did a novel, and reading it I almost wonder if that was the original intention. There is A LOT of action, but to a point where it starts to feel exhausting and also like any meaningful character development is being sacrificed for the sake of including more action scenes.

A compelling pace right from the start, full of fantastic imagery, this sci fi adventure has a diverse cast of various species from across the galaxy who travel through space to battle the elements and various intimidating foes. I leave it to those more qualified than me to comment on the science content but as fiction it’s a great read.

A great Scifi action adventure. A combination of Starfield and Guardians against the galaxy where a scavenger comes across a relic that fuses to his skin and is hunted for its power.

Goni his monkey/not monkey best friend is the perfect comic relief along with the wonderful imaginative world that the author created.

Outstanding beginning for this fresh, action-packed space opera.

Steller Heir is the first novel in author Scott Killian’s new science fiction adventure series of the same name, and it was absolutely a thrill-a-minute, hit-the-ground-running debut! Great characters, witty dialogue, amazing alien beings, a compelling mission to save ALL, and vivid imagery that made me feel I was there all combined to deliver an exciting epic of a space opera.

Jael Ked’Korhva is the main character and the young captain of the scavenger ship, Zigzagunda. Along with his humanoid simian sidekick, Goni Tinge, they scour space for items of value. However, a mysterious bracelet, an artifact from the ancient past, once clasped around Jael’s wrist, changes everything. Not only is every pirate, mercenary, and alien death squad on their trail to get the power of the artifact for themselves, but it has shown Jael the future fate of the galaxy should he fail to stop what’s coming.

I enjoyed Jael’s narrative so much. He’s witty, smart, and relatable, and Goni is entertaining with his banter, enthusiasm, and single-mindedness on a couple of issues, such as food. I loved their interaction, camaraderie, and relationship with the Zigzagunda, especially the banter and rivalry with Goni. The action sequences are tense and easy to follow because they are so well choreographed. Descriptions are fluid and easy to visualize. The author’s alien beings are diverse, imaginative, and often horrifying in their extreme physical strangeness and interactions.

The plot goes from 0 to 60 from the very first chapter, and there’s little downtime; the tension just keeps building. Told from multiple points of view, readers follow the action from the different angles of the story. The good guys, on occasion, stray left and right of what’s moral but who you can’t help rooting for from the start. Then, there are the bad guys, the VERY bad guys. And yet, there are those you won’t be able to categorize yet – are they going to fall on the side of good or evil? Thankfully, the second book in the series is shown to be scheduled for publication in March of 2025 because there’s so much more story left to unfold.

I recommend STELLAR HEIR for science fiction readers who enjoy space opera action and adventure.
