Focusing on the period of philosophy from the pre-Socratics to Plotinus, Philosophy of the Ancients is a lucid, up-to-date introduction to the study of the classic Greek and Roman philosphers. This volume offers the reader a broad range of coverage of ancient philosophy, while the major emphasis of each philospher are distilled so as to afford meaning and insight.
(I read this in German. 2/5, but it’s closer to a 3/5.) Decent introduction to ancient philosophy. Reasonably acceptable summaries, which do offer an overview, so it really is what it says on the tin. I still wish the author did not phrase one point he’s trying to make in about three different ways without adding much new/important information. It’s also obvious that the editor (if there was one at all) did not pay that much attention all the way through, since there are formatting errors, wrong or non-existent punctuation and typos. Which is a pity because the whole book otherwise is written in orthographically flawless German.
