Jacqueline Johnson has a secret. It’s the reason she’s been largely avoided and ignored her whole life. It’s something that people can just tell about her, from a single glance, though she looks the same as everyone else.

Jack can feel death—human, animal, even insect, if she really concentrates. Which she never does. In fact, she tries very hard to never acknowledge her horrible affliction at all.

When Jack was seventeen, the Midnight Killer came to Creekville, her small town tucked in the woods of Appalachia, and claimed her little sister as one of his last victims. Now, thirteen years later, Jack feels him kill again. And she decides that, this time, he’s going to pay for what he’s done.

Though she’s isolated herself for more than a decade, Jack has no choice but to accept the help of the first—and only—boy she’s ever loved. But Max isn’t a boy anymore. He’s a renowned detective from the big city. And not only is he determined to catch her sister’s killer, he’s also not going to let Jack get away again.

I initially was blessed to read this as a ARC, but It was so good I bought the paperback!

WOW! I actually clapped after reading the book.

I went into this book for the most part blind. I read the trope teasers and a couple short excerpts from what the author posted on social media. So, because of that, I’ll be as vague as possible. It was so good I think going in blind made it worlds better. It had me gripped from the beginning that I cleared my day just to read it.

The story is about a woman named Jack and you follow her story through traumatic events as she revisits her past and how it continues to affect her present day life.

Although I felt frustrated at times, I understood why Jack was the way she was. I felt connected to Jack in self isolation, guilt, low self-esteem and hyper independence due to my own traumatic experiences.

The story was consistent with great world and character building but it wasn’t drawn out with needless fillers like some books are. There were some twists and turns that I wasn’t sure what direction it would take me at times. I was so tempted to read the ending! Hahaha. But thankfully, I held myself back!

I would consider this a paranormal/thriller read. There is a slow burn romance, but I didn’t take it as the main focus. The story was just so rich. Midnight is very different from her debut fantasy Savage and Lovely, but both are amazing reads in their respective genres. Even though Hazel Black is still up and coming, she is definitely on my top 10 of faves that include authors like Rebecca Yarros, Anne Rice and Scarlett St. Claire.

Midnight was such a creepy, heart wrenching time!!

I think this book is better to read with less context so will keep this spoiler free.

The concept of feeling death to that degree of intimacy where you feel their feelings and mood, and you’re forced to become complicit in another beings last moments, really did a number on my head and seeing the result of that trauma for Jack completely torpedo her life for years and years is HEARTBREAKING.

Does Jack make me want to slap her a little at points, yes but in the way that you want to shake your best friend when they say something stupid. Like I love you but snap out of it!!

This book is a fun mix of thriller, paranormal, and second chance romance but the romance arc is definitely the undercurrent rather than the driving force which worked well for this story.

I wish we had more exploration into the reasons for Jack and Max’s issues 17 years ago, the resolution from them was a little skipped over for me personally.

Side note. Max is hella hot.

I said ‘what the fk’ at multiple points in this book, and really had no idea what the end resolution was gonna be and that’s just the BEST.

It’s 4.5 for me but rounded up for GR.

I couldn’t put this book down. The writing and character development make up for any instances of predictability. Hopefully this author releases a new book soon so I can continue to enjoy her writing.
