Bottom Line to Lifeline: The Moving Memoir of a New Paramedic by Simon Higginbotham is an immersive and high-intensity account of reinvention, purpose, and frontline emergency care.

What makes this memoir immediately compelling is the pivot at its center: a seasoned international business executive and Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program alumnus stepping away from corporate success to train as a paramedic. That shift from boardroom strategy to life-or-death decision-making provides both narrative tension and thematic depth.

Written largely in the present tense, the book captures the urgency of emergency calls the unpredictability, adrenaline, and emotional gravity of entering people’s lives at their most vulnerable moments. Higginbotham balances raw honesty with moments of levity, revealing not just dramatic rescues but also the humbling experience of becoming a novice again.

At 205 pages, Bottom Line to Lifeline blends action-driven scenes with reflection. It examines identity, purpose, and what it means to serve. The memoir’s strongest thread is reinvention: the courage to step into discomfort, retrain, and redefine success later in life.

This book will resonate strongly with readers interested in emergency medical services, career-change narratives, and memoirs centered on purpose-driven transitions. It offers both an insider’s look at paramedic life and an inspiring example of bold personal transformation.

Interesting and fascinating.  A good read.

The book details a year in the author's life as a paramedic, right from him starting training.

This was a bit different in that he's not fresh out of school or uni-he was 50, his career has been in business, and due to a medical emergency of his own, he decided to completely change his career.

At the start of the book he is moving to America to take up a new job. Moving from Britain.  Months later, things are going well. Then an emergency strikes that changes everything.

A good solid read, and unpredictable.  The emergency that changed everything wasn't due to an RTA. It hadn't happened in England, and it didn't happen to him, it was his younger son.

An interesting and fascinating book.  Easy reading, constructed of short chunks/scenes.

If I was a lot younger and physically fit, I'd be tempted to become a first responder: EMT/Paramedic after reading this excellent account of what it involves. Sadly, I'm too old and my body wouldn't allow it anyway. I'd recommend reading this book to anyone who is interested in joining a caring and satisfying profession.
