For more than twenty years Mariska Majoor has been advocating for the recognition of sex workers rights internationally. This book brings it all together: knowledge, experience and practical tips. Everything that everyone should know about sex work, whether you are currently working in the profession or not. When Sex Becomes Work is not only a handbook for prostitutes, but also an eye-opener for anyone who truly wants to learn more about this unique profession.
I read this for a book club. Sex work is a very interesting topic: how there will always be demand for prostitution (legal or not) and how society still looks down on sex workers. It gave some interesting insights in sex work as a valid field of work some people choose themselves (it's explicitly not about forced sex work or human trafficking). However, unfortunately, this book is very poorly written and very outdated.
I purchased this at the PIC in 2010 when I was in Amsterdam. I'd been part of a tour of the Red Light District and it truly is amazing how differently sex and prostitution are viewed in the Netherlands. As part of the tour we were able to stop at the PIC and Majoor spoke to our group about her own experiences and why she started the information center as a resource for men and women who voluntarily work in the world's oldest profession. Majoor is very intelligent and insightful and this text was written in mind mainly for those interested in a career. However, I found value in it as well, and would recommend for anyone simply curious about such a 'novel' idea as legalized prostitution.
