One hundred twenty-eight years after the environmental linchpin ignited a second American Civil War and subsequently forced the Earth into global conflict, what's left of humanity has survived by going underground. With the end of the timeline looming near, interdimensional metal dragons called Draconesuperi approach humans to help save the future of the world.
In this first book of the series, Stasia and Kida must escape a compound in chaos in order to help the Draconesuperi Cogs find the three Dythoids located in North America. If they're able to find all three of these gyroscopic keys, they and the Draconesuperi may just be able to save the timeline from extinction.
However, in a dangerous world populated with human survivors and giant acid-spitting beetles, finding the Dythoids may not be the most difficult part of this quest.
With the timeline at stake, will they be able to find others along the way to aid them in success? Or will they perhaps be swayed down a different path...?
An amazing journey that takes you along on the harrowing path of the main character.
In a post apocalyptic world where humans live below ground in bunkers to survive; Stasia is pushed above ground to face the dangers that lie there as the only hope to save her own life when an uprising in the bunker threatens her life and the lives of those she loves.
Battling acid spitting giant beetles and riding a sapient mechanical dragon are just a few of the experiences we see as our characters seek to save their community and the world.
This story presents both epic adventures and inner turmoil in such a beautiful way.
Dystopia is back in full swing with Courteney's series debut, drawing on our classic ideas of what to expect and introducing a few twists that we don't.
The potential in the first book is amazing, and I'm excited to see what comes next, but first...Death of a Timeline
No time is wasted in getting to the action, and this trend doesn't stop until the very last page, so this book is perfect for those who love dystopia and sci-fi but want their novel to have pacing akin to a movie or mini-series. While I, personally, would have liked to have seen more of Statsia's "normal" life in the compound before the inciting incident or to have some of the world's lore explained further, I can see how this could be threaded into future books in the series.
The world-building present is more than enough to hold itself up, and her universe is definitely unique. Giant beetles making nests of material from the dead world? Mechanical inter-dimensional dragons? Literally everything in the epilogue? Don't go into this expecting what you read back in the dystopia heyday from 2010 to 2016; there are plenty of twists to make it feel fresh.
That said, be aware this novel finds itself between YA and NA, so what I'm calling "Upper YA"--the themes of YA are ever-present, and our protagonist is young, but there are 60+ usages of fuck and its variants, as well as graphic violence and murder on-page. Because Stasia is only 15 at the novel's start and 17 by its end, I found myself groaning and rolling my eyes at her antics and constant need to sass literally everything that moves. There was some character development throughout, but fingers crossed she sees more in the next one...
The last five percent was insanely captivating and had wonderful descriptions (not spoiling it), and I'm eager to see what comes next in this universe!
As a fan of dystopian fiction, I absolutely loved Courteney Levet's "Death of a Timeline!" Although filled with sass and teenage attitude, I found the main character - Stacia - very likable and realistic in how a girl her age would likely act facing the type of adversity that occurs throughout the book. The ending leaves me anxious for book 2 to see what happens next!
Action-packed and fast-paced, this is an exciting start to the series and I highly recommend reading it if you like this genre or want to start exploring dystopian fiction!
I'm also very curious about some of the characters and backstory of the current state of the world they're in, so I hope there will be additional character and world development in future books in the series.
I received a free ARC of this book and this is my honest review!
If you enjoyed City of Embers, Iron Widow or The 100, you will LOVE Death of a Timeline by Courteney Levet.
Follow Stasia, a teen who knows nothing about the post-apocalyptic world outside the safety of the bunker she lives in, as she's forced above ground to take on a mission to save humankind. Sentient metal dragons and giant beetles the size of cars that spit acid aren't the only threats she'll face!
This story had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end, with some of the best world-building I've ever read and complex, morally grey characters, you won't know who's "right," is anyone?
