Among these nefarious stories, siblings strengthen their bond by plotting against their aggressor; an animal lover seeks revenge on devotees of the exotic skins trade; and a psychiatrist gets what's coming to him when he abuses the trust of a jaded client.
These stories take readers straight to the scene of the crime, exploring just how and why people are driven over the edge--and driven to kill.
The OWNED collection is a free eBook that is approximately 14,000 words long.
A couple of stories contain a speculative element.
I was trying to find my way as a writer and person throughout my twenties. I won't be writing under my "Jess C Scott" pen name as it doesn't reflect who I am anymore (it's a pen name I used since I was 12 years old).
In 2019, I started working on some horror short stories and essays. I intend to publish them at some point in future under my real name (still undecided if I might use a new pen name for fiction).
See you at my new site if the genres are of interest to you :)
If you've never read anything by Jess C. Scott, I think this collection of short stories would be the perfect place to start. A quick read that reveals the darker side of the author's writing. This author is not afraid of tackling "taboo" subjects in her work.
In this book, you will find a mix of excerpts from her novels and original short stories. The overwhelming themes in all the stories is murder and revenge.
Twins plot to kill their abusive father; an e-mail exchange between two friends who have both suffered abuse/rape contains the essence of a plot to take revenge on the perpetrator; in a paranormal story, a young girl takes revenge from beyond the grave; illegal animal skin traders are about to face their comeuppance in a tale that combines dark magic and vivid imagery; a dark and twisted man who takes advantage of his professional position meets his match; twin sisters take revenge on an online bully in an original way.
If you like dark fiction, you'll love these twisted tales.
OWNED is a collection of six short stories. Each one conveys the morbid chill of a slaughter house. These stories are designed to be shockers, which leads me to believe they will be most popular with younger readers -- older readers normally lose their hunger for that spinal snap that unexpected horror brings. My favorite is #3, MY CHANCE ENCOUNTER, wherein the protagonist winds up in a totally unexpected spot reminiscent of an Edgar Allen Poe chiller. Good read, although I'm older myself and prefer comfort to terror. I just won't read it at bedtime.
Owned by Jess C. Scott is a collection of six psychological crime short stories. I enjoy reading short stories but some of the subject matter in this collection is outside my usual reading taste. And that's the great thing about ebooks - especially indie ebooks - you can quite often find yourself reading a new writer; an unfamiliar genre; or a book published in a different country to your own and find that you enjoy reading it and your life is enhanced as a result. So, back to Owned. The stories are united by one theme: revenge. And in every case, the reader is on the side of the avenger because the perpetrator is a truly awful person. The abusive father; the rapist; the murderous boyfriend; the cruel animal killer; the untrustworthy therapist; the Internet bully: all get their just desserts, usually in a spectacularly gory manner. The writing is interesting, almost experimental in places, and the author has explored several contrasting styles to provide a short story collection which is varied, entertaining and sustains the reader's interest. However, some of these stories are purposeful with an intrinsic message. I think this works best in Skins which challenges the use of animals in fashion and furnishings and in Owned which addresses the damage that can be done by the cyber-powerful against innocent victims. The book concludes with a preview of Jess C Scott's Playmates - Book 1 of the Wilde Twins series. I would recommend you download a copy of Owned and see what you think.
