The Disenchanted Heiress: Cousins of Cavendish Square

Rate this book
A blackmail threat. A fake engagement. A runaway bride. Join the Cousins of Cavendish Square in three clean and sweet Regency romances.

*****

She flees an arranged marriage in quest of her past, but she just might discover her future instead.

Born in faraway Canton yet raised in England, Amelia Fitzwater has always fallen just short of being a true lady, even if she were the niece of an earl. But when her stepmother despises her enough to arrange her in marriage to an upstart tradesman’s son, Amelia gathers her things and steals away on a quest for her late mother’s Chinese roots.

Jacob Hawthorne is just about to spread his wings when his mercenary father insists on pinning him down in marriage. With his bachelor days dwindling, Jacob uncharacteristically agrees to escort the bewitching, mysterious stranger he finds at the London Docks on one last, grand adventure and chance at a purposeful life.

When dangers and disappointments bind them together in friendship and more, Jacob and Amelia gradually discover that what they’re running away from and what they’re careening towards might just be the very same thing.

A sweet Regency historical romance with a plucky heroine, a dashing hero, and a highwayman or two. Part of the Cousins of Cavendish Square series, which can be read as standalone novels and in any order.

Nineteen-year-old Amelia Fitzwater has never felt completely comfortable in her own home. Of her father’s love, she never had doubts. Her stepmother and stepsisters, however, never made her feel as if she belonged. When she’s informed that her stepmother has arranged for her to marry a complete stranger, it’s too much, and she heads off on an adventure to find information about her birth mother, a woman said to be a Chinese princess.

Jacob Hawthorne, the twenty-three year old son of a successful tradesman, has been informed that he will marry an unknown woman in two months. All his father cares about is that the woman comes with high-ranking connections. Jacob is granted those two months to do as he wishes, but informed that he must show up for the wedding.

When the paths of Amelia and Jacob cross, neither knowing that they are promised each to the other, and they take off in search of information on Amelia’s birth family, a delightful adventure unfolds. It isn’t long before they become friends. And not much beyond that before they each secretly fall in love with the other.

This was a sweet and entertaining tale. Jacob was everything a young woman imagines the man of her dreams should be: kind, caring, gentlemanly. Amelia is spunky and determined, even willing to undertake a dangerous trip to China on her own, if she must. When Jacob finds her in distress and comes to her rescue, their lives will take a path together that neither of them could suspect will lead to a happy ever after.

I loved this book. Both the main characters and the minor ones brought the book to life. The writing was excellent, and the way the plot unfolded proved completely charming. I highly recommend this book.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author through BookSirens. I thank all involved for their generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.

This sweet, light regency romance was such a fun book to read! I loved Amelia Fitzwater’s spunky, not necessarily ladylike, personality and view of life. The idea of marrying a gentleman she had never met was too much for Miss Fitzwater, and this is the catalyst that sends her on the fun and adventure she had always desired. Despite being sheltered most of her life, Amelia sets out with high confidence and grim determination, quickly finding herself in some rather difficult circumstances right from the start. I admire her ability to remain strong despite her lack of experience.

Our main male character, Jacob Hawthorne, is a proper gentleman despite not technically having a title. Having been allowed to be educated as if a man of the ton, Jacob uses this to his advantage when interacting with those in social standings higher than his. His care of Amelia and self-sacrifice to help her discover more about her Chinese mother’s heritage were endearing and sweet. Despite an arranged marriage hanging over his head, Jacob finds himself drawn to Amelia. I loved watching the romance unfold in this fast-paced read!

The Disenchanted Heiress is just one in a series of three sweet Regency romances called the Cousins of Cavendish Square. We do get to meet the heroines of the two other stories at the beginning of this book, and I am excited to go back and read the other two in this series!

Iris Lim delivers yet another captivating and heartfelt tale in her latest novel. This story introduces us to Amelia Fitzwater, a young woman struggling to find her place in a society that has never fully accepted her. As the daughter of an English father and a deceased Chinese mother, Amelia faces not only societal prejudice but also the disdain of her stepmother, who arranges for her to marry a tradesman’s son—a man she has never met. Determined to explore her options, she embarks on a courageous journey to uncover her late mother’s Chinese heritage.

Meanwhile, Jacob Hawthorne receives life-altering news from his father: he has three months to enjoy his freedom before entering into an arranged marriage with an earl's niece, a union designed solely to elevate his family’s social standing. His father gives him three months of freedom but fully expects him to uphold the marriage agreement.

Unwilling to fully submit to this predetermined path, Jacob impulsively agrees to escort a mysterious and enchanting stranger he meets at the London Docks—none other than Amelia—on an adventure that promises both excitement and self-discovery.

As Amelia and Jacob navigate perilous challenges and face unforeseen disappointments, their bond deepens into something more profound than friendship. Through their journey, they discover that what they've been desperately fleeing might actually hold the key to their true happiness. Their romance unfolds beautifully, with Jacob’s heartfelt affection and unwavering support for Amelia shining brightly, especially during her most vulnerable times. The revelation of long-buried secrets adds both surprise and depth, proving that uncovering the truth doesn’t always lead to a happy ending.

Iris Lim’s storytelling excels with richly drawn characters, an engaging plot filled with mystery, and a romance that feels both authentic and deeply moving. This novel is a testament to her talent for crafting narratives that are as delightful as they are emotionally resonant.

Amelia Fitzwater, niece of the Earl of Aldbury, has always been different. The product of a union between her English father and Chinese mother, a minor princess who died in childbirth, she often wondered about her heritage and legacy. Amelia longs for adventure, and when her father and stepmother agree she must marry a stranger sight unseen, she feels she has no choice but to run away and undertake a grand journey to China to seek answers. The adventure takes an interesting turn when Mr. Jacob Hawthorne, a tradesman’s son, intervenes and helps her out of a difficult situation, and agrees to help her on her quest. Little do they know that this merry misadventure will draw them together in more ways than one.

I found this an entertaining and satisfying read that I couldn’t put down easily. I liked having an FMC from a mixed-race background and learning more about Chinese culture and one of its historical connections to England. I admired Jacob’s attitude, work ethic, and desire to be his own man, as well as Amelia’s charming naivete. I highly recommend this book!

Read this story for:

❤️Sweet Regency romance

❤️Third-person dual POV

❤️FMC runs away

❤️Road trip misadventures

❤️Different social classes

❤️Cinderella vibe with stepmother and stepsisters

❤️Instant attraction/affection for MMC and FMC

I received an ARC for an honest review. This is my very first book by the author.

My review:

Being forced into marriage is not an uncommon trope in regency novels, as well as characters that want to escape to live a life where they can follow their very own choices. However, what I particularly liked about this story was Amelia’s main reason for fleeing being her wish to learn more about herself and her Chinese roots. Given the time she was living in, it surely is not an easy task but she keeps on going and chasing any kind of information she can receive - despite the different road blocks she is confronted with. She was such a determined and lovable character.

Jacob is the classical British gentleman you want to read about in a regency novel. His determination to help Amelia and his support from the start, was what made him even more likeable than his handsome looks - which Amelia seems to agree with as well. I loved how they clicked with each other from the very first moment they met. And I loved reading their, at times quite amusing, conversations and how their relationship grew throughout their interesting journey.

There were no unnecessary dramas or misunderstandings, the whole story was a very nice and easy read. I recommend it to everyone who loves reading regency novels and determined yet sensible characters.

Iris Lim demonstrates her flair for crafting endearing characters and amusing situations with "The Disenchanted Heiress". Part of the multi-author Cousins of Cavendish Square series, this novella features Amelia Fitzwater, the youngest of the three cousins.

The lovely biracial Amelia is a nineteen-year-old naive dreamer. In an inspired moment worthy of a ten-year-old, she decides to embark on a trip to China to discover her mother's family. This absurd notion is quickly abandoned, however, thanks to the providential intervention of the hero, Jacob Hawthorne.

What follows is an unconventional road trip with these two young adults, who take along a ridiculous maid for propriety. While this scenario is incredibly unlikely in Regency England, it is entertaining. Secondary characters are interesting. Jacob's tradesman father is a pompous upstart, and Amelia's stepmother is unlikable. I found one plot twist rather sad.

Lim's writing is always a delight, and this novella is clean. The author has a firm grasp of the historical period and its customs. To my surprise, however, she disregards that here. 3.5 stars

I am thoroughly enjoying the Cousins of Cavendish Square series! From their lovely book covers to the stories inside! Amelia Fitzwater is having difficulty facing the future that her father and stepmother have plotted out for her. Feeling helpless, she runs away to take charge of her future, naively planning to return to China, the place of her ancestors. She's looking for answers and a promising future. After all, she's always been told her mother was a princess.
Jacob Hawthorne has been locked into an arranged marriage by one of his his father's schemes, and he runs from his future. Jacob's street smart comes to naive Amelia's rescue, and he decides to fill the end of his bachelor days with helping this damsel in distress. Instead of the impossible trek of traveling to China, Amelia and Jacob plan to visit someone who might have known her mother. Together, they face disappointments, difficulties, and danger.
I enjoyed this clean regency romance and the respectful feelings they showed each other. The "lady's maid" was also an entertaining addition at times. I strongly recommend this book and series for a wonderful escape! Bravo!

Born to a Chinese princess and an English father, Amelia Fitzwater has never quite fit with her family. Her stepmother hates her, her stepsisters mock her, and her cousins, who love her like a sister, treat her like a flighty child. Fortunately, her father has always had her back. Or at least she thinks so until her father decides to marry her off to a man she never met.

When she decides to run off to China to find her mother’s family, she ends up in trouble on the first day when someone tries to steal her money. The dashing and kindhearted Jacob Hawthorne steps in to rescue her. Taken with her exotic looks and spunky spirit, he decides to help her.

When Amelia realizes she doesn’t have to go to China, that there’s someone in England who can help her, she and Jacob set off on a quest through the countryside. Along the way, their friendship begins to deepen. But Amelia is hiding her impending betrothal from Jacob, and he has secrets he’s keeping from her. Once all of the secrets are revealed, will their love survive?

The Disenchanted Heiress is a delightful book with a sweet romance and characters you can't help but root for. I loved this book and can't recommend it enough.

This sweet and romantic novel by Iris Lim explores the issues of being of mixed race in Regency England. Amelia Fitzwater is a beautiful half-Chinese woman who is being pushed into a marriage with a man she has never met. Her only connection to her long-deceased mother is a beautiful jewelry box, which is her most prized possession. Desperate, Amelia decides to run away to China to see if she can find relatives to help. In the meantime, Jacob Hawthorne is also being forced by his tradesman father into a marriage with a woman sight unseen. When Jacob runs into Amelia down at the docks, he rescues her from being swindled by a hackney driver. Soon, he finds himself helping her in her quest to find her relatives. Luckily, they won’t have to go all the way to China. Soon, they find themselves attracted to each other.

Iris Lim has created a delightful road-trip story with a plot that weaves through various locations and situations. The characters are nicely developed, and there are some interesting twists and turns, and surprises. It was a fun book to read!

This sweet, slow-burn regency romance swept me up in a story of identity, independence, and unexpected connection. Amelia has always felt like an outsider in her family, never quite belonging, and constantly reminded of how different she is. When her stepmother arranges a marriage to a man she’s never met, Amelia makes a bold choice: to run away in search of her mother’s heritage and a life she can finally call her own.

Enter Jacob Hawthorne, a gentleman with his own share of unwanted expectations. Bound by a looming arranged marriage to someone far above his station, Jacob is determined to live a little freely before duty calls. What he doesn’t expect is to find himself rescuing a mysterious young woman and he definitely doesn’t expect to become completely entangled in her journey.

As they travel together, secrets build, feelings grow, and the question of what their futures hold becomes more and more uncertain. I loved the gentle chemistry between them, the longing, and the hope that maybe - just maybe - fate will be kind. This is a lovely, clean, historical romance about finding belonging, love, and the courage to write your own story.

I read this as an advanced copy.

Amelia, a half- Chinese British high society lady struggles with finding her identity and space within society and within in her own home. Her mother dies early in her life and she must now decide where she fits in her own life. When shes forced into a marriage, she decides to embark on a voyage to her mother's homeland and attempt to find herself there.

On her way she encounters Jacob, a heir to a shipping enterprise whose father's heavy handedness pushes him to find some freedom outside his work. When their paths ultimately collide, sparks fly, attraction flares, secrets unfold and futures collide. Ultimately, Amelia must decide where she fits and Jacob must decide how to control his future.

It was lovely to see how Amelia embarks on this voyage of self-discovery. It was a very brave decision and one that shows her true character and strength. I enjoyed how Jacob was always beside her gently guiding, and not forcing her on her path. The growth of both was slowly woven and tightened into the novel, making for a great comfort read!

This is the second book I’ve read by Iris Lim, and once again, she delivered a story I truly enjoyed. The Disenchanted Heiress stands out in the Regency romance genre for all the right reasons. It’s unpredictable, witty, heartwarming, and filled with characters who are anything but typical. They felt refreshing, memorable, and real.

What really impressed me were the plot twists—there were several, and none of them felt contrived. Each one added depth to the story and kept me engaged throughout. It’s not often that a historical romance surprises me, but this one definitely did.

Kudos to Iris Lim for bringing something new to the genre and nailing it. If you're tired of formulaic Regency romances with cookie-cutter characters, this book is for you. You won’t be bored.

This is the first novel I have read by Iris Lim and the final one in the Cousins of Cavendish Square series. Confession: I actually skipped the second novel and went straight to this one because of deadlines for feedback. I will go back and read then in order soon.

I loved this story. It had a bit of everything: a quirky but independent heroine, a swoony hero, a fascinating historical backdrop, a road trip, blackmail threats and even the odd highwayman.

Iris Lim took a plotline which could have been cliched (young woman fleeing from an arranged marriage) and made it her own. The style was engaging and there were a few unique twists such as the biracial heroine who reflects the author’s own ethnic background.

I would thoroughly recommend this series and this author: off to go find some more of her books.

I requested an ARC of this title from Book Sirens. This did not influence my opinions which are freely given and entirely my own.

Charming 19 century story based on some real historical facts evolving around Amelia Fitzwater and Jacob Hawthorne. Amelia’s mother passed away many years ago and she has always called her undermining stepmother, Mother out of courtesy, but she wants Amelia out of her and made Amelia’s dad do a betrothal with another gentleman, Jacob’s father. Neither are happy about this situation and complain. Unbeknownst to Amy and Jacob they meet and like each other, not knowing that person is their future marriage partner.

There’s plenty ups and downs, with a lot of hurt for Amelia to deal with, especially her mother’s Chinese background and her legacy gone. Amy’s cousins Jem and Thea were her best friends as well and they made a beautiful trio and always supportive.

Liked the main couple, Jacob and Amelia, and found it fun to watch them fall in love and Jacob’s tea business grow.

Amelia is the daughter of an Englishman and a "minor Chinese Princess." Her father remarried, and her stepmother forces an arranged marriage between Amelia and a wealthy tradesman. Amelia pleads with her father to stop the madness of forcing her to marry a stranger. When he does not listen, she runs away, hoping to find her family in China so she can get her dowry/inheritance from her mother's family. She is woefully unprepared to take any journey by herself. Jacob Hawthorne, a wealthy merchant's son, also temporarily fleeing his arranged marriage, gallantly rescues Amelia and helps her along the journey.

The story kind of felt like a Cinderella retelling. Maybe it was the stepmother/stepsiblings treating her like an outsider. There was a twist I wasn’t expecting at the end, and a few that I think were supposed to be surprising but were fairly obvious from the beginning. I like the writing style. I enjoyed learning more about Chinese culture/history. Very well done!

Mix a “Cinderella “ stepmother with a multicultural heroine, add nasty step-sisters, a marshmallow dad and you have a recipe for disaster. No wonder Amelia runs away. Then , put a society ladder climbing father and a handsome son into the pot and you have a joyous fate-filled romance! I so enjoyed how Jacob comes to Amelia’s rescue and sees something in her that he has never found. I felt for both of them, dealing with parents who only had their own interests at heart. The road is long and full of mischief, but it leads to blooming love. It was interesting to learn some of the intricacies of the Chinese back then and how the author weaved real with fiction. I really enjoyed this misadventure and the chemistry between the two was fun watching it grow.

✨ Arc Review ✨
Title: The Disenchanted Heiress
Author: Iris Lim

I have had the privilege of getting to read this book as an arc reader, and it has been such a fun experience!

Before this book I had never read anything by Iris Lim so The Disenchanted Heiress was such a nice introduction to her writing!

This was a nice story with such a sweet ending! The characters were well developed and full of personality! which was quite the treat since characters have sometimes seemed bland in historical books with this setting that I have read in the past. The overall plot was exciting and full of love and exploration!

You will definitely enjoy this book if you like: Pride and Prejudice, the arranged marriage trope and tea! ☕

(Ps. I am so sorry this review is a bit late! Life got so busy for a bit there!)

Well written, full of drama, secrets, intrigue, love, suspense, society, kidnapping, adventure, friends and an arranged marriage. Amelia is the niece of an Earl who has arranged a marriage for her. Jacob is in the trade business when his father wants him to marry so that they are more into society. Neither Jacob or Amelia want to marry so she runs away and meets a very nice gentleman who offers her his help. Jacob has a few months to sow his wild oats before the marriage date. Together they help each other without knowing who the other truly is. Lots of action and secrets before the wedding date. Curl up and enjoy this story. Would recommend to others.

I received this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.

Four and a half stars for this delightful book!

This is part of a series, each can be read as a standalone but I enjoyed reading each of them to gain a perspective of each cousin in the series.

I enjoyed both the hero and heroine in this book. As they were on an adventure to seek some truth, unexpected truths come about.

I enjoyed the way they interacted and how they came together to solve the mystery.

The development and pace of the plot is engaging and has a true to life feel.

I found the whole book uplifting despite hardship and disappointment.

I received an ARC copy of this book and all opinions are my own.

This book began a bit slowly for me, but Amelia’s audacious and sudden plans sure changed that! In attempting to avoid an arranged marriage, she ran right into danger, and soon afterwards, into the heart of a despondent but compassionate tea merchant. Jacob also had his reasons for flight, so helping Amelia untangle her past suited him just fine. How could he not have foreseen the consequences of time together in close quarters?! This is a lovely happily-ever-after that this “tea snob” absolutely loved. It celebrates pride in one’s heritage and culture in ways most Regency romances don’t. I received an advance copy via Book Sirens and was not required to post a review.

What a great adventure! This story was a a pleasure to read. I liked the way the two main characters developed their story together without realizing they were falling in love. I liked the main female’s determination to go out there and find the e answers she needed, even though she was naive in her approach. The main male was a rare gem wanting to help and protect an innocent. There was a variety of different parts to their adventure that added a bit of mystery and danger.

I enjoyed it and look forward to read more about the characters that were introduced in this novel.

Fun story of two people meeting by chance, falling in love, and then finding out they were both running from an arranged marriage to each other. I enjoyed their interactions and adventures together, especially Jacob’s concern for Amelia and her happiness, and was grateful Amelia didn’t have to go all the way to China to find out the answers she was seeking. I was glad to see her father realize that his daughter’s happiness was paramount to all the rest! I especially liked the epilogue, tying all three books in this series together with more of each cousin’s happy ending. In the last few years, I have come across several series of books where each book is written by a different author; the Cousins of Cavendish Square is one such series. The fun thing about a collaborative series is that the books are based on a common theme and can usually be read in any order. However, since there are multiple authors involved, each book has a unique feel.

The Disenchanted Heiress is…

A little bit of Cinderella…

A little bit of Snow White…

AND

A little bit of You’ve Got Mail.

I received this book free from the author, publisher, or other source. My only obligation is to provide a fair and honest review.

Captivating Regency Romance

I was captivated by the latest installment of the Cousins of Cavendish Square! Amelia's journey blends charm and challenge as she navigates her relationship with her stepmother and searches for her true self, inspired by her late mother's tales.

Her adventure takes her to a rough part of town, where she meets the enigmatic Jacob, who offers his protection and support. Their evolving relationship is enchanting!

The exquisite writing and lovable characters make this historical romance a joy to read. It’s a beautifully crafted narrative that left me wanting more!

The Disenchanted Heiresses is Book 3 in the Cousins of Cavendish Square by Iris Lin. I found this Regency romance was enjoyable and a bit different. Amelia is being forced by her horrible step mother to marry a trademan's son… not a very happy prospect. Jacob's father, insist he get married… loss of being single.; doesn't this seem like a fairytale? I found this story to be so entertaining. The Disenchanted Heiresses is not to be missed. I really enjoyed the continuation of the Cousins of Cavendish Square. Amelia’s story is a sweet one. While she’s dealing with her step Mother’s antics, she is trying to find herself with only the stories about her late Mother to guide her. Her adventure leads her to a bad part of town where she runs into Jacob, who decides to join her on her journey while trying to keep her safe. I enjoyed how their relationship develops, as well as blossoms throughout the story.

Love this well-written and well-edited historical romance, which features lovable lead characters who are worth rooting for. The author lays a strong foundation for their blossoming romance from the moment the lovers meet, not to mention solid characterization. It’s amazing and impressive how the author likewise infuses true events and characters in the story. The pace, which is quite fast and steady, is always welcome for readers who are pressed for time but wishes for a swift resolution of the story. A highly recommended read!

A beautifully penned love story of Amelia and Jacob. They go through an incredible journey, enlivened by the maid Betsy (I must mention her!), a couple of highway men, and of course, a carriage accident.

Amelia wanted an adventure, and the adventure she had lead her to a greater understanding of her past, and a grateful acceptance of her future.
