I enjoyed this book quite a bit. There is good science here, and something that I could easily use to help other people. The main premise is that you do some blood work and use some calipers to check your fat storage. Then build your exercise and food plan based on that information. You could do this with your health care provider or on your own. Overall some really useful information, and it was also well-written. This book also, thankfully, tells you to eat fat. It's about time that the some of the world is participating in this movement. The more the merrier...
Full of useful info that debunks popular diet myths and provides a high-level blueprint for healing your metabolism. I appreciated the ample citations and lack of *fluff*. The section on supplements was especially useful.
This book allows you to inform yourself and implement individualized behavior in order to be well. Learn to understand what your blood panel is telling you and why....this book can save us a lot of money by preventing disease by addressing via exercise and diet. Insulin resistance is an example where basis change can prevent type 2. A manual to keep around.
Exceptional review of basic metabolic testing and how to achieve an optimally healthy lifestyle based on your results
The Blood Code is a clearly written, logically organized book that provides an excellent foundational introduction to metabolic hormones and optimizing lifestyle choices. It is rooted in a basic set of blood tests, carefully selected to provide actionable information while being affordable to run 2-4 times a year while identifying what the best diet and exercise choices are. The basic premise of this work is that each of us comes from a unique genetic blueprint and responds to insulin, carbohydrates, and fats in one of several patterns. What works for one person may not for another. The author describes how to interpret blood test results to determine what response pattern you fall into, and then outlines how to make dietary and exercise choices to best work with your body to achieve health. He also includes a chapter focused on nutrient supplements and a brief appendix for athletes. A unique perspective he brings is that insulin resistance—the driving factor behind obesity, type 2 diabetes, and many cardiovascular diseases he mentions—is actually not a disease but an evolutionary advantage that we do not adapt our lifestyles to take advantage of. Overall, this book is a well-researched and clearly written work that provides excellent contextual information and is action-oriented. Well worth reading.
