Probably the best watercolor instruction book I have read! (And I’ve read many, even many very good ones.) I’m going to guess that the editors or publisher recommended and chose the title. There are not 101 “secrets”. Much of the lessons and instructions are common watercolor techniques and advice, but page by page the insights into understanding and learning watercolor (and I was already fairly experienced) are systematically very well laid out, rich and full of detailed instructions but very easy to read and understand with generous and very helpful photos of the artist’s work. It’s just superb! To be sure, there are actually some of the artist’s secrets, kindly and generously given, for instance, my favorite—Anna’s use of Green Apatite Genuine pigment from Daniel Smith to create beautiful granulating leaves in her botanical paintings. Or her use of an iPad glove to keep from causing issues on her paper as she paints. Anna’s paintings are stunning and beautiful and she is so generous and kind to share how she has created them!

From intermediate to Advanced

I wanted to learn watercolour. So at local art store I bought a book written by Susan Harrison-Tustian the book had most beautiful watercolour painting and I thought that's it I fell in love straight away well 17yrs has passed my illness got worse and after 15 yrs being unable to still do realistic leaf I gave up threw it away though I still did watercolour following Jeanie Raine did some lovely paintings even sold a few and got into oil pastels which I adore but couldn't shake the giving up on that book, so one night ordered it . Try again over and over even threw it out of frustration then put it back in bookshelf. Few weeks later I downloaded this book and watch a YouTube of hers on pumpkin and you wouldn't believe it but it explains everything and I now could see how to do it where I went wrong . This book I would say is the Bible to watercolours, it takes you from A-Z in every essential insight and techniques nothing is left unturned once you know them you are not only free to dO what are in your watercolour books stored in your bookshelf but free to do realistic one or imagination but you are given
the tools to design your own unique painting but also give it the 3D realistic look and you can do challenges you will never be bored again the 101 should be called infinity since with all the knowledge you will find between those pages will find your impithaney
moments coming when relaxin looking around also those blocks smashed to the ground .

It's one of the best books on watercolor, yet if you are into botanical illustration, some recommendations are not suitable because of strict rules in botanical illustration field. Otherwise, this book is perfect for a beginner and somewhat experienced enthusiast.

I really addmire Anna Bucciarelli's watercolor art, her YouTube videos and this book!

She has a separate website you can link (info in the book) that links each lesson in the book to an instructional video. This is the best of both worlds: having it in writing to refer back to AND being able to watch her paint what she's teaching in real time!

This is a great instructional and reference book. Highly recommend.
