The Sorcerer's Ring #13

A Rule of Queens

Rate this book
In A RULE OF QUEENS, Gwendolyn leads the remains of her nation in exile, as they sail into the hostile harbors of the Empire. Taken in by Sandara s people, they try to recover in hiding, to build a new home in the shadows of Volusia.

Thor, determined to rescue Guwayne, continues with his Legion brothers on his quest far across the sea, to the massive caves that herald the Land of the Spirits, encountering unthinkable monsters and exotic landscapes.
In the Southern Isles, Alistair sacrifices herself for Erec and yet an unexpected twist might just save them both.

Darius risks it all to save the love of his life, Loti, even if he must face the Empire alone. But his conflict with the Empire, he will find, is just beginning. And Volusia continues her rise, after her assassination of Romulus, to consolidate her hold on the Empire and become the ruthless queen she was meant to be.

Will Gwen and her people survive? Will Guwayne be found? Will Alistair and Erec live? Will Darius rescue Loti? Will Thorgrin and his brothers survive?

Just awful. We are starting to get recycled story lines from earlier books. Darius and Thor are almost the same. Erec/Alistair (still think its a boys name) are facing almost identical circumstances as Thor/Gwen from a few books earlier. Who is Reece's great love? Is it Selese or Stara? The answer is, whomever he is with. It is getting annoying. Andronicus/Romulus/Volusia are like the last Caesars of Rome. A new one every few months. I am sure that is on purpose. I really hope he/she throws in the towel on this soon. I prefer to see series through to the end, but I'm not sure I can stand much more of this.

As with all the others, bad editing, easily-predictable plotline, and blatant stealing from other works. That said, Rice does always leave the plot hanging, almost forcing you to read the next one. Of course, only because the plot is dragged out through the myriad of sub-plots, almost to the point of making things absurd. Why I continue to punish myself, I don't know. Fortunately, I always check it out from the library, so I at least don't regret having spent any money! I absolutely don't recommend this series. The writing is bad. At this point, I've read too much not to see it through, but I won't rush to get the next book.

Just end already please. I am so vested in this story line I need to see how it ends. But seriously, enough is enough. Stop adding characters and elongating a story that is long enough already. Make the next one the last, please, please, please.
Don't ruin a good thing by dragging it out.

It was probably the best book of the series. There were many unexpected twists and turns. But all the books sort of repeat themselves. It is always the same plot.

Proofread!

This author needs a proofreader so badly.

Repetitive sentences over and over again

I have read every book in the series and it seems like there are more grammar errors the further the series goes. I would definitely recommend that an editor be hired to edit any future books as this is truly beginning to bother me. This book was just ok. I think it's time to wind the series up. There just can't be much more that can happen and the new characters are just not that interesting.

This is no longer a religious allegory, it's straight up religious propaganda. I hate everything about this series and cannot listen to it fast enough so I can just be done with it. It's a good thing my mom lied when she said my eyes would get stuck if I didn't stop rolling them because the amount of times I eye roll while listening to this is ridiculous.

The logic is missing in a lot of places Thor goes to the land of the dead but first he isn't planning on comming back just because his child is maybe there. He doesn't seem to care that his wife is still alive.
Then when he is luckly and finds out he can go back 7 demons are brought into the world while only 6 people go back to the word. It's weird because the king of the land of the dead first states that for every person that becomes alive again 1 demon goes too.(on of the stays behind so that should be one less)

I have the bundle, 13, 14, 15, but wanted to post a review for #13 whilst fresh in my mind.

This installment has many twists and turns, furthering the many adventures in this epic fantasy. We follow many of the characters and their choices, each fascinating and engaging. The themes of honour and love are still strong and power-hungry villains are forever thorns.

Action-packed, imaginative and philosophical.

Recommended but it's a long haul.

More of the same. Continuing on to the next. I do enjoy these stories. This one introduces a new evil queen into the mix and a new hero to be as well. We shall see what becomes of them and the original cast.

My usual comments about this series apply abundantly to this volume: not a bad story but absolutely lousy writing and editing. I don't know why I keep coming back to it. Moving on though.....

Book 13

Book 13 was a fun read and had errors throughout. The characters and plot development is ever changing with each book and each becomes more bold.

Great series

I have enjoyed reading this series but they need to proof read better. Lots of mistakes. I would like for the ending to be happy so these poor people find love and peace.

It was an entertaining story, although the writing isn't great. I do like the characters, the dialogue, and the story, but every now and then the words, the language used or the way something is written makes me cringe. The narrator did a very good job in the audible book. I just wish I had realized this was book 13 in the series before I finished it. It seemed odd to start a book the way it started, but it isn't unheard of to start in the middle of a battle and then go backwards to the beginning. My friend had just finished it and told me he enjoyed it, but forgot to mention it was that far into the series. When I told him I had also finished the book we had a good laugh and he suggested I go back to the beginning. So book 1 is next.

The author keeps you going with the series through an action packed presentation of events that cover every one of the characters in the series. No character depicted throughout the series is less important than another whether they be a goat herder come druid sorcerer warrior, a destined queen come exhiled wanderer looking for a new home or a bar maiden come druid sorcerer queen of the Southern Isles. In fact, the plethora of characters are presented in such a timeless fashion that whether you encounter them first in book one or first in book nine of the series it seems like they've been there with you all along, through the good and the bad (although it does seem in part, like many a good story of heroes or heroines, that roadie a small dot. of good times here and there, mixed in with a splattering of bad). I definitely recommend picking up book one if you're yet to discover the lands of the Ring and the Empire or if you're more like me, I recommend patience in awaiting each new arrival - let's face it, every four to six weeks is a whole lot better than every six to twelve months.
