A Cruel Romance

Rate this book
This is the story of a lonely young man.

This young man comes from wealth and prestige, is well-endowed in both appearance and temperament, is a warlord by profession, and has no unhealthy avocations. In the opening of this romance, he is in the course of performing military service in some desolate dump, making a living from pillaging neighbouring towns and moonlighting as an opium dealer.

I read the Chinese version of this book, so my rating is based on that and not the translation.

I think I began skimming after a particular plot twist around 70~80% that I did not like, even though . The author writes very well, but it is quite difficult for me to feel connected with her characters. She doesn't really write a story with a plot, but rather she always writes about the life of one very messed up MC. It can get pretty tedious, and her MCs are often bastards. This MC is no exception...it's kind of hard to feel sympathetic for the MC at first, so when he gets tortured and everything you just feel like "HELL YEAH". I guess...it was kinda torture porn? Rape fantasy? But despite those being my kinks, they did not strike me as very erotic in this fic (aka much to my disappointment they were not very tasty)...so I guess it's just that. Shit happens to the bastard MC just as often he fucks up other people's lives. I also had problems with the fact that he had .

Anyhow. I'm starting to ramble, because this book was very ramble-y. Still, despite being a 流水賬-esque story, it was fascinating in a twisted sort of way, and the plot flowed along. Since everyone was messed up during that really dark period in Chinese history, you just have to throw away your three values to read this book if you don't want to get pissed off by pretty much every character. I liked the 攻 the MC ultimately ended up with so he was a big motivator...I mean he's pretty much the most decent and heroic character in the book. The MC...well, he wasn't really capable of anything, he felt kind of girlish with his 小心眼ness, and all in all I didn't really like him. However, as a 顏控 I was able to follow along because I wanted to imagine stuff done to him. Too bad it just wasn't tasty (I know I'm repeating myself. But all the porking was so...flat...and I was pretty disappointed damnit.)

In conclusion, this book may not be for everyone, but still quite worth the read and I think it is considered one of the classics for BL fiction, so I'm pretty glad someone actually decided to take up the monumental task of translating this long-ass story, it is a pretty good representation of what the Chinese BL community has to offer.

This is also one of the only 2 stories I managed to read & enjoy by Ni Luo (the other being 義父, which I liked much better). Her other works are frankly too twisted for me to read.
