Myśleli, że zabili dziewczynę. Stworzyli jednak potwora.
Codie Crowley once told a scary story that caused mass hysteria at a slumber party, and she’s been chasing that high ever since. When she isn't writing chilling fiction, she's probably out looking for ghosts in Salem, Massachusetts, where she lives with her husband, their cat, and a collection of creepy dolls.
Her debut novel, Here Lies a Vengeful Bitch, is coming August 2024 from Disney-Hyperion.
I really had so much fun with this one. A super entertaining, unique, well written tale of revenge told from the POV of a murdered teenage girl that reminded me a LOT of myself at that age (minus the murder 😅)
Female revenge at its best! I was afraid it would be to YA for my tastes, considering the age of the characters, but it wasn't. It was smart, full of emotions and so well written. A great tale of revenge, I loved it.
If the title doesn't grab you by the throat and you don't enjoy it, then there's something wrong with you. Well, maybe there's something wrong with me... Either way, the title was enough for me to read this.
Then the synopsis hit and I couldn't help but scream. A badass girl who comes back from the dead to get revenge? Well, fuck. If this doesn't scream "Hold my beer", I'm not sure what does.
This book was everything I hoped for. It was weird, hilarious, swoony, and downright vengeful. I loved it! I was hooked from the very first line and couldn't put this down. Annie Lane was a character worth cheering for from start to finish. It was hard not to love her and see her get everything she ever wanted, even though she's no longer alive.
A lot of awful things happen to Annie and you feel for her. So her revenge is really sweet and justified. The way she stalks and hunts was extremely entertaining. Parts had me rolling and dying with laughter.
Here Lies a Vengeful Bitch was the back from the dead book that I've been hoping for. Annie and her new best friends make for a highly entertaining and captivating read. I can't wait for the world to meet them. Annie is to die for.
Absolutely FILLED with plot holes and inconsistencies and contrivances, to the point that I initially gave this 2 stars and am now down to 1 after recalling everything that didn't make any sense, some of which I'll go through below. But essentially, if you've read the title, you've read the best thing about this book. (Major spoilers behind the tag.)
1. Sam. Who is he? Literally. We get no information. 2. The fire ghost person. Who is she? Why did she lie? Did she even lie? Unclear. 3.
a girl who was murdered comes back from the dead to solve who did it & get revenge??? yeah sign me up!
such a fun read that's perfect for spooky season. there's a ouija board part in this that lowkey freaked me out, if you've ever played with one then I don't even need to explain why.
read if you like: - School Spirits - female revenge - ghosts or the undead - hellhounds - spooky vibes
favorite quotes: "It's a funny thing, to plant the dead. To tuck the bones, like babes to bed. In the ground, like seeds to sow. In the ground, as if they'll grow. But be careful where you dig, oh be careful what you do. When you bury a bad seed, she might come back for you."
"To be honest, I think I'd rather be dead than good."
Trójka z plusem, bo ta historia ma naprawdę świetny plot twist, a choć główna bohaterka jest trudna do polubienia, ciężko jej się dziwić… jej matka to największa vengeful bitch tej historii 🥲
"And remember, dear reader: The next time a man asks you what your problem is, drive his fucking car off a bridge." - by the author herself.
This could have been amazing if it was written better. We don't get answers to any of the questions that we have while reading this book, the side characters don't feel like real people and at times the story felt very childish. There are some parts of the story when you can see that the author has talent but I think this had to be worked on more before begin published. The answer of who killed her is foreshadowed so much that you are not surprised when you found out who, cause it was obvious. The romance was not needed here, not only because it was bad(very bad) but because it took time away from the story and we could have used that time to fill some of the plot holes that were all over this book. If you want to start this because you think that the main character is a badass mean girl then you will be disappointed. Annie is not a mean girl, sure everyone in the town hates her but we don't really get a definitive answer on why they hate her. She is just a normal girl who had a horrible mother and lived in a town full of adults who hated children who did not fall in line. The only thing I truly loved about this was the friendship between Annie and Maura,I cried at the end, their love for each other was the heart of the book .
Thanks to NetGalley and Disney Publishing Worldwide for access to this title. All opinions expressed are my own.
It's a YA paranormal thriller that will quickly become a high school horror fan's most requested book.
In my past reviews, I have admitted that I have chosen books because of their cover or subject matter. On this occasion, I selected this book based on the title alone. Because who doesn't love a good revenge story? Especially when the main protagonist is trying to figure out who murdered her.
I enjoyed the short punchy chapters and the mystery of Annie trying to figure out what happened to her. Codie Crowley puts her main character through a lot of intriguing circumstances and I found that compelling enough to keep turning the pages.
On the other hand, I needed a little bit more understanding about the world that Annie was now living in. Why if she was dead, was she able to eat, drink, and converse so much with the living? That's why I feel my review sits in the 3-star category.
When all is revealed and Annie races to confront her killer- that was some fairly captivating action. All in all, I am quite satisfied with my reading experience.

Annie Lane returns from the dead after being murdered and is bent on revenge. She returns to her small town and leaves mayhem in her wake. This was a great read and I hope to read more by this author. Thanks NetGalley and Disney Publishing Worldwide for this ARC that will be released August 6, 2024!
I was excited to read this title--a murdered girl getting revenge on the person or persons that murdered her? Sign me up! But as I read, it felt like I was reading a first draft. Or even a sequel. There were several things left unexplained (why does everyone in town hate our main character, adults included? Where did these god-awful nicknames come from? Why did the name of the shed our main character and her best friend hang out in go from being called the Dead Shed to the Evil Dead Shed depending on chapter? Who was the scorched lady that led our main character to the river and lied about a certain someone being a murderer? Why did she lie? Why did no one warn our main character about her??). Additionally, the ghosts that our main character meets are, quite literally, just characters. I don't think we needed them to speak in slang every sentence for the audience to realize they had died in past decades. And the plot only really needed Sam, because the rest of the characters did nothing to move the story along. In the end, the murderer's motive was silly. I understand that the message trying to be conveyed is that people are afraid of women realizing their autonomy and being who they really are, even if others don't like it. But again, didn't need to be spelled out for us.
Thank you to NetGally and Disney Hyperion for an eARC in exchange for review. Here Lies a Vengeful Bitch releases August 6, 2024.
Wasted potential is the name of this book. A captivating title and an interesting story BURIED AND BOGGED DOWN by a cast of unneeded side characters. The entire Chapel House was unnecessary to the plot and the reveal that Annie is dead should not have been DRAGGED OUT to the halfway point of the book!
The worst part was the "romance" with Sam. The plot thrived when Annie was alone. Her emotional moments, HER ANGER at the injustice, her moments with Maura... That should have been the entire book. Instead we get some extremely uninteresting side characters and a forced romance subplot! It was so infuriating NOT to have Maura and Annie together facing the killer! Annie didn't even get to process her complex emotions regarding her killer. Instead we get Sam tagging along with Annie and an entire chapter of Sam rescuing Annie!!!!
A book that should have been an excellent mystery and revenge story instead turned into a mediocre drama with side characters nobody cared about. I have no idea why the author thought anybody who saw the title and picked it up would be interested in SAM more than Annie and Maura getting a very satisfying Carrie style revenge!
I adore the cover, title and dedication for this book. This was a lot of fun and a really fast paced story. I will say there we're a couple of plot holes - Why can Annie eat and shower and drink if she's a ghost? - Why can people see her and talk to her? - The lack of explanation of how this all works is confusing.
This book is everything I love. Angry girls. Revenge. A wild ride and a violent conclusion. I could write a lot more superlatives but really, you should just go read it yourself.
I read this as an audio book, and it was a fun read for spooky season. Wasn’t a fan of the fact that there was ONE narrator with like 50 characters.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ 💋 Characters 💋 ✧.*
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ Annabelle: She was kind of annoying: basically your basic FMC. She wasn’t anything special, except that fact that… well… she’s dead.
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ Sam: Sam was a fun character. I loved that he wasn’t from Annabelle’s time frame and he used a bunch of weird slang. I think his plot twist did get a little lost, though
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ Verne, Virgil, etc: There were a lot of characters that I think got a little lost, but they did have their time to shine. The twins annoyed me so bad though >:(
≡;- ꒰ °🪦 The plot 🪦꒱
: ̗̀➛ The “hellhounds”: They weren’t in this book a lot, but they were a little weird for me? Not bad just kind of a weird thing to put in there.
: ̗̀➛ The not ghosts thing: I was really confused at first because they were eating and stuff, but then it was explained and I thought it was a cool twist.
This was a really entertaining mix of Thriller, Mystery, and Horror. YA but not childish or overdramatized. I still don’t think there was a full explanation of some of the paranormal elements but to me, it didn’t matter. I bet it would make a good teen Netflix or CW show. Perfect for Halloween but I still enjoyed it in April.
I LOVED Annie Lane. This was such a wild, spooky ride grounded in real emotional truth. Codie Crowley's voice is so unique and she's a writer to watch. God, I just LOVE the way she puts sentences together. If you like thrillers x Halloween x dead girls with agency, read this book.
I think this book might have changed my brain chemistry. HERE LIES A VENGEFUL BITCH is about resident bad girl, Annabel Lane, who wakes up and can't remember what she did last night. All she knows is that her ex-boyfriend might have been involved and she left her house looking like a break-in. But then she keeps coughing up dirty water filled with pine needles and people seem surprised to see her. And she starts to wonder if maybe the reason she can't remember anything might be because someone tried to kill her-- or if she's even alive now.
This was such a good book. I loved the "unlikable" heroine and how she was portrayed. I loved how deftly the author showed how creepy men can be, and how dangerous the world is to an overconfident teenager who wants to be brave and loved for who she is in a world that hates women who break the mold. (Although, I mean, I hated it, too.) I loved the tempestuous portrayal of female friendships. And I loved the fast-talking fifties love interest who wore Buddy Holly glasses and quoted retro science fiction.
HERE LIES A VENGEFUL BITCH is kind of like a cross between Donnie Darko, The Frighteners, and Beetlejuice. If you like gothic-coded paranormals in the vein of Lovely Bones and other books from the "dead girl" era of late aughts YA, you'll love this.
I absolutely cannot wait to read whatever else this author writes.
This book did leave a lot of unanswered questions. Who was the burned girl? It ended without any explanation of her story. No real clarification of Sam and his backstory either after accusing him of murdering five girls. He said he was falsely accused but why did the burned girl lead her to that article. Plot line that just didn’t go anywhere.

3,5-3,75 Oj miało to trochę dziur fabularnych, bohaterka też nie jest najprzyjemniejszą osobą na świecie XD ale bawiłam się świetnie, więc zostawiam 4 :)
- who dunnit -female revenge stories -spooky vibes!!!
This is a DEBUT novel?! It was INCREDIBLE.
The vibes were so spooky and it was super creepy!
Annie is a local small town mean girl, considering reconciling with her douchy band-guy ex, trying to solve her own murder and find her missing bestie after a night she can't remember.
I loved that Annie named her car Bathory, as in Elizabeth Bathory.
I for sure thought that Gun did it, but the ending was shocking!
Quotes:
"Baby, you're a first class hellraiser sister of Satan."
"The flesh will crack, the bones will dry The worms will squirm from eye to eye The belly bloats, the guts turn up The teeth fall out and turn to mush When all men die as all men do, except that is for me and you."

To be honest, I think I'd rather be dead than good.

What I Liked: 1. Honestly nothing
What I Didn't Like: 1. Writing style felt immature 2. Characters were so boring
Final Thoughts: It was creepy to start a book off with the character bloody and in water with zero idea what's happening. What isn't interesting is how she just manages for no reason than she has no one to call for why she would stay with these odd group of people. She almost accepts this is her life.
I dnfed 175 pages in. I just didn't care about these characters or the story. IG|Blog
I cannot believe I finished this book. I have way too many books on my TBR shelf. I wish I could give it a half star. Maybe it was just me but none of this book even made that much sense. Are you dead or not?
