War is on the rise. Social castes and loyalties are not so clear as they once were. Will love be enough to keep them alive?
Taking place right after where The Unfortunates left off, Nine and Kade are faced with a new and deadly revelation about who Nine might really be. Is she truly a Fortunate? Or is somebody lying? And what could that ultimately mean for these two unlikely lovers?
Without giving too much away, Nine and Kade are on a perilous fight of their lives. Not only against the unjust system of the Fortunates, but also within themselves. If Nine really is a Fortunate will she abandon her old life and begin anew in a privileged and corrupt society with Kade? Will Kade give up his family name and join Nine is the struggle against tyranny? Against his own kind and family?
Is he and Nine certain about what lies beyond the lines of power, deceit, morality, betrayal, and seduction? And with lines being blurred and alliances up in the air, will their love survive to see them through it unbroken?
The second installment in its series, bk2 definitely upped up the ante. I was always on pins and needles about what was going to happen next and out of mind scared shitless of Vince and his quest to destroy Kade. In The Fortunates, you do get more of an insight about Kade's little bro and why he is so viscous and his reasons for hating Kade so much. I do hope somewhere that Vince may be able to redeem himself and find a shred of solace. Yes, he does a few unforgivable deeds in this novel that will by no means absolve him from what he did. It's just that, that one conversation he had with Nine made sense for me and had me seeing him slightly in a different light as a victim. And hey, before you start raising your pitchforks at me ladies, yes, the bugger does indeed need to take responsibility for all that he's done.
As for Kade and Nine. I loved Nine's tenacity to stand up for the weak and her growth throughout. She really has come a long way from this fragile, scared girl and has paved herself to a strong, well-rounded leader and beacon of hope.
Kade, on the other hand, has quite the dilemma in this book. He has to make a decision whether to go by what all he's ever known or turn against it and choose what's right. His turnaround by meeting Nine was amazing. To see this rough around the edges lost soul meet another lost soul and to see his hardened edge thaw and become 'human' again was utterly beautiful.
"She'd given him a glimpse of a world he longed for-- breathed life into the humanity he thought he'd lost. That was worth more than control, more than power, and more than gems. Peace on earth ws worth more than prejudice, more than the separation of social classes."
Nine was definitely, hands down his match and stirs a need of conflict and emotion to call out for change both Fortunates and Unfortunates and want to become a better man for himself and of course Nine.
Author Skyla Madi effortlessly captivates in this innovative and brutal world that doesn't hold back in the punches. It's raw, it's unapologetic, and most of all, it delivers!!

My biggest concern with starting this is that I read BOOK#1 back in February 2015 so I'm hoping I don't have to do a re-read for it all to start clicking into my brain..And the answer to that is NOOOOOO I didn't have to!!
THE FORTUNATES: Is told in dual POV'S ( Eighteen year old Nine & Twenty - five year old Kade )
This picks up right where The Unfortunates left off so you don't have to do any back tracking, there's still that unanswered question hanging over nine's head if she truly is a Fortunate which will all become clear in the first few chapters.
Her life is hanging in the balance, she's being held in a cell beside her mother until a decision is made
I'm still alive
Still locked up
Still a pending Fortunate.
In the cells I got one meal a day
A handful of broth in a bowl smaller than the palm of my hand
and a chunk of stale bread.
The anticipation of whether she lives or dies all comes down to if her name doesn't appear on the piece of paper determines her demise.
The name I hope he reads off the paper isn't mine
Because I'm not finished here
Because I need more time with Kaden
Because I can change the world
The chemistry between Kade and Nine (Anna) is still as strong as what we encountered in BOOK#1, but maybe even more so in this book.
Kade and Nine (Anna) were raised differently
They were polar opposites
She was the calm eye to his ferocious storm
She was the trickle to his surge.
Kade has quite the battle on his hands in this book. He has to make a decision whether to go by whats been ingrained in him since birth or turn against all he's known and choose another path.
He was a Fortunate and I was always destined to be his Unfortunate
Now we are equal
I am in a powerful position
A position where I can do something
I don't want much out of this life
But I'll settle for saving the world.
Kade wants a family
But I want war.
I want to wage a war...
With you...or against you...
Without giving away too much more of the plot you're going to get more than what you bargained for, you'll be sitting on the edge of your seats, it's fast paced, hot, nail biting anticipation, hard to put down, bad to the bone and will leave you wanting more, definitely a series I would highly and do highly recommend..

He'd paddle her out into the middle of the ocean and read her a book

As soon as my brain cottoned on that this started off right where the previous slight cliffy ended in BOOK#1, I was pretty much hooked, the anticipation that was coursing through my veins trying to reach the end in record speed to see what was going to happen had me putting life on hold.

I read this in one sitting, could not put it down, didn't want to put it down.
This is definitely a series I would recommend though be aware that there is another book due out which I can't wait to get my hands on.

Omgggg I am seriously in love with this book!! I have been waiting forever for this book since reading The Unfortunates two years ago!
Kade & Nine are such an amazing couple. Their chemistry and their connection towards one another is something that is felt from page one and I SERIOUSLY cannot get enough of them.
And Kade. Oh, Kade. He says things like "Don't think I won't take on the world to keep you alive." and I just can't help by totally swoon.
I am so psyched for the next book...let's hope we don't have to wait another two years!

April 14, 2015My mind has officially been blown by THE UNFORTUNATES and although it ended in a cliffhanger it wasn't a horrible one but it does nothing to quench my need for this next book!
I cannot wait to see what happens! Nine is one of my favorite female characters. She was so strong and determined. This next book is going to be very interesting. Can't wait!!!!

Well, to say I'm disappointed it would be an understatement.
After all this waiting I'm sad to say this book was not what I was expecting.
For those of you with triggers, let me just say Vince rapes Nine. I couldn't believe it.
Also, it ends in a Cliffhanger. We'll probably have to wait another year.
After reading this, I will not be continuing the series.
Life's too short.

Unfortunates #1 and Fortunates #2
I've read so many very good and also very bad reviews about this series and was so intrigued, that I wanted to know what it's about this series, that let people have so many very different emotions and opinions.
I love Skyla Madi's books. She writes really good and exciting stories and I couldn't let it go. This book is a dystopia story, what's not my usual genre, about a world where civilization is back to slavery and ownership.
This world is disturbing and ugly, like the "old" slavery world was.
Warning: This book is a very dark one.
The slaves aka Unfortunates and the owners aka Fortunates live theirs lives like they did over 300 years ago. The Unfortunates are nothing but things that can be easy replaced. Their lives are not important and they have only one purpose, to serve their owners in any way they please. But there is a small part of this ugly society, that hate the way this world operates.
And yes, in this dystopian world a love story is still possible. A forbidden romance between a Fortunate and Unfortunate unfold and....🤭

Yes, without doubt, I liked this 2 books from the trilogy. I hope I can read the last book soon. I'm dying to know how this crazy story ends. I hope Skyla will put me from my misery and publish the last book this year. I really hope for a HEA 😬

When I learned second book of this series revealed. I was like this:
and....... after jumping in story......... I cant believe to you Skyla Madi.... I fucking Cant believe you....How you could do it to me.... to Kaden and to Nine
I remember when I finished this book with a cliffhanger and my heart broken...... I was really curious what will happen.. How will story lead.... I didnt expect this.. Never....
And here I m.......speecheless
Whn Kade or AKA Kaden realize that he cant turn his back Nine, capturer of his heart , he realize that he has really big problem..... He have to start a war against his blood, his brother and his society .. Being Fortunate is not save Nine because she was born as Unfortunate... Vince brother of Kade, sinister devil man has big plans for his big brother and he has nothing to lose....
I cant believe after this how writer makes story goes in that way..
It was quite unfair to Kade and specially to Nine newly named Anna......
we need another book for to clear our minds.. but I lost my curiosity for this series ..Sorry Skyla.......
I wont give any spoiler.... I havent still heal from this........

Skyla you did it again!!!
I think I waited an eternity for this book and then it was finally there and I nearly got a heart attack.
I read this book twice in 2 days and it just got out 2 days ago. What does it say about me?
Probably that I am absolutely crazy..... which I am, I am utterly crazy about Nine and Kaden and their epic story.
Those two are just deeply engraved in my heart and if you read this series you will know why.
Skyla has truly created a world like no other and the only bad thing I can say about this book is, that it was just too short.
This book could have had a 1000 pages and I still wouldn't be able to put it down. Probably I would have been starved by the end of the book, but it still would have been worth it.
Thank you so much Ms. Madi for creating such a breathtaking, unique and disturbing world and for taking your readers on such a roller coaster ride.

Almost TWO YEARS later, surprisingly WORTH THE WAIT!!
As soon as up remembered the release date for The Fortunates I swiped it up. I do desperately wanted to hate the book because all I could think about was why the wait?! Why the push back when there is a book of this magnitude! Skyla Madi is hands down one of my favorite authors but the wait kept me pulling back. I kept saying I wouldn't buy it and I knew it wouldn't be good but I'm glad she took the time to write the book the way she wanted it. I know I would have been devastated if she had went with the ending she first intended. I tried so hard to hate on the book but I couldn't. After the first few chapter's I was hooked on nine's new found independence and swooned by our lead male's possessive tendencies. It is all falling together but one can only hope it's not another two years for the conclusion! Thank you Skylab Madi.

Fell a little short with all the war/drama going on. She was a little TSTL at times.
I put this on my TBR list back in Sept 2014. I was FINALLY able to read it now that's its been published.. July 2016. 2 freaking years. Eep. I have been waiting forever and I still love the characters and the plot.
The series is great, but I hope the next one is a little more developed... just MORE content needed especially if you're going to put war/uprising in books. It REALLY needs time to develop and being less than 300 pages will seem hurried to me.

The series is great, but I hope the next one is a little more developed... just MORE content needed especially if you're going to put war/uprising in books. It REALLY needs time to develop and being less than 300 pages will seem hurried to me.

Having waited 2 years from the time I ready the Unfortunates until this book was released, I kind of moved on to other things. Now, almost two years after the release of The Fortunates I made my way back and I'm so glad I did. Since so much time had gone by I went back and read The Unfortunates again and quickly dove into this book. I was so glad it kept up the pace of the first book and kept the drama going at full force.
I love Kade and Anna (Nine) together. I like that she brings out the vulnerability in him. Together they are a force to be reckoned with. One of the things I like the most is that you don't know what's going to happen next. Every turn is something new and you hope that you don't run into Vince around one of those turns. I'm looking forward to the third book, but I hope the wait isn't as long as the previous one.

So this book picks up from where unfornates ended and what a hell of a ending that was. Now nine faces new challenges which could even mean ending up her life which in turn would end up kade's. We their relationship getting stronger in this one and I absolutely loved it. But this book has twisted my heart with pain as so much happens and I was..... Just heart wrenching 😭😭😭.
So much of actions and unexpected twists and sweet togetherness and painful turns, there's just so much happening in this one and then the end.. NOOOOO. I need the next book asap and wish that Ms. Madi gives it to us sooner, sooonnnerrrrr. Loved this one. ❤️❤️❤️

I was really looking forward to The Fortunates. I was surprised on how much I ended up enjoying the first book (The Unfortunates) but the plot of this sequel felt rushed, the exciting sexual tension from book one that made the love story so compelling was also lacking and in the end I am just not a fan of the heroine in what is supposed to be a romance novel/love story getting raped in the middle of the book.

I absolutely love this series, I so thought this book was going in a different direction then it totally proved my thoughts wrong and I loved that I was wrong! Nine and kade are amazing together and I can't wait for the next book in this series. Skyla, you have an amazing talent inside of you and I am so glad that I started to reading your books. Keep them coming, I love them all!!!

Book 1 left off with a cliffhanger and book 2 was no different. Once again, I didn't know this wouldn't be the last book in the series, but after reading the author's explanation at the end, I understand why a third book is needed to give Kade and Nine a full story without loose ends. This installment was more story and less romance, so I'm interested in seeing more of both aspects in the finale.

After almost two years of waiting for this second installment in the Unfortunates series, I must say that it was worth the wait. The story continues right where it ended in the first book and I was instantly captivated.
Nine is still struggling to come to terms with the fact that the woman who gave her birth is a Fortunate. She's waiting behind bars for her fate to be announced, live or die, and she can't help but feel like she doesn't belong in this cruel unfair world. She would prefer to die than to live in a world as a Fortunate. But Kade is there, and he won't let her give up so easily.
I really loved Kade in the first book, but in this one, he was phenomenal. He's not so cold anymore, showing the deepness of his feelings for Nine continually. He shows her that she's more that important to him, she's everything. He's ready to help her achieve her goal of rebellion by his side. While Kade is wise in his approach, Nine is more aggressive and it make her doubt him a little. She wants to trust him blindly, but it's not always easy with their beginning and it brings a few misunderstandings between them.
I loved how Nine was so strong through all the story, in spite of everything good and bad happening. Kade is a great supporter to her rebellion, and they make a good team. The book couldn't be the same without the presence of Vince, Kade's younger brother who's still so evil and heartless. Vince is still trying to break Nine, by treating her like she's nothing, knowing it'll hurt Kade in the process.
In the first book I loved the connection between Kade and Nine, but in this one their feelings are so intense and their chemistry palpable. They're both great characters that finally stand-up for their convictions by working in tandem despite the lukewarm reception of their relationship.
Skyla Madi definitely succeeded delivering an incredible enthralling story. I can't wait to see what she has in store for the last tome of this gripping trilogy. I hugely suggest this novel!!

I simply stopped reading. I think I was at about 41%. I am truly not sure why. I read the first book, and while it was only okay, when I saw the second one was in Kindle Unlimited I decided to go for it. I'm not sure if I was bored, if I didn't like the way the story was going, suddenly didn't like the characters? I know -- not helpful. I do know that the society disgusted me, and I totally sympathized with Nine's discomfort with eating, being waited on, etc. Without spoiling anything, the juxtaposition between Kade's attitude and Nine's was a little hard to take. His motives for doing the right thing were purely selfish it seemed, and I think ultimately that really got to me. Anyway, let me know how it ends!

I've been waiting for this book for quite some time, and I have to say it was well worth it. I LOVED every word in this amazing story. The author picks up right where the last book left off, and although I read the first book, The Unfortunates, a long time ago, I fell right back into the story without missing a beat. The chemistry between Nine (Anna) and Kade is undeniable, and my loathing of Vince only increased in this book. The characters were so well written I felt as if I was living the story as it unfolded. I can't say enough about this book, as well as the first one, except that everyone needs to read them... right now. You certainly won't be disappointed. :)

I'm mad at myself because I was doing so good at reading this book. I was reading every single chapter and not skipping ahead. Then a particular scene happened and I had to know what was going to happen. So, I read a little ahead. Then a little more... and a little more. I told myself to just keep going and I basically skimmed over the rest of the book. I'm mad because this is what I did with the first book. I should of slowed down and enjoyed this a little more. Oh well, I'll try and not do this for the next book. Whenever that comes out!!

This book was so highly anticipated for me, since finishing the unfortunates I have been hanging out waiting for this book! Skyla Madi obviously takes enjoyment from giving her readers what they want and then twisting some other angle into the story line, leaving you begging for more answers and the next book. You won't want to put this book down & if you are anything like me, you'll be wishing book 3 was available now!

Well, this was interesting. I like the way the story continues after the Unfortunates and I'm pleased that Kade and Anna are still together, stronger than ever.
I'm sorry that Vince had the chance to make her suffer as much, but I have faith that she will get her revenge. Sooner rather than later. And I hope he suffers a long time before he dies.
Meanwhile, I'll be waiting for the final book to come out and I hope it will be worth the waiting.
