Enfin, faibles...
I saw the blurb on this one and it promised something a bit unique when it came to shifter romance so I picked it up. I happily started reading and liking what I saw, but started to get the suspicion that I was not reading a story originally written in English or at the least by someone for whom English was not their first language. And I was right. I thought it was just one more layer of coolness that I was reading about Parisian characters and the story was written by a true Parisian and translated very well I thought.
The story begins with Lou and her friend Camille working on a mission to discover the disturbance amongst their people. Lou and Camille are not fully human. They are from a secretive race living amongst and alongside, but very different and apart. They are daierwolves meaning they can change into any animal that is equal to their body mass, they are stronger, they have heightened senses, they are more intelligent, they can speak telepathically and are part of a collective conscience. Each daierwolf favors a certain animal and that is their strongest form when they fully or partially shift. Lou is a panther. Camille has worked his wiles to get Lou noticed by the secret service and she is hired to help coordinate and investigate unusual and unsolved cases the humans come across. This is right where her people need her to see if the human investigators can shed light on what is causing troublesome ripples amongst the daierwolf community of Paris. Lou learns quickly not to underestimate the humans or to think that some aren't as intelligent as her kind especially when she discovers that they have brought down a rabid, turned werewolf all on their own and have captured another daierwolf that the humans suspect of being part of a killing spree.
Lou has to tread carefully as she leads the humans through their investigation so that the right secrets are kept, but enough is told so the humans aren't completely blind to the danger of what they're dealing with. Things get complicated fast and she soon becomes the target of a cunning killer. Then there is the handsome human captain and he's her boss that she can't seem to stop thinking about and wanting to be with and protect when he is out on his missions.
As I said, this world of daierwolves really got my attention at first, but then I continued to like it for the characters, the exciting plot and even the romance. This was a first effort by the author, but it was a very solid one and I anticipate her getting better and better.
Lou was a fun character and I loved it when she started really interacting with the people at her new job. She's never been around humans this closely so she comes into things with assumptions or she's confused by their responses or actions. This is also her first encounter with attraction too. And it wasn't just Lou, I loved all the characters from her well meaning and 'force of nature' mother, her mischievous best friend Camille, the quirky research and investigative team in her department and of course, Joshua. I was really glad that Lou and the others shifted often and didn't just stay in their human forms making the paranormal aspect very present in the story.
I wanted to give special notice to the nicely done translation work by Patrick Brown. I loved how there was a balance in his work in that there is still a strong flavor of French in the English translation so that the rhythm of the thoughts and speech were still French even if the words are English.
So all in all, I had a good time. I would definitely read more in the series. Paranormal romance lovers should give this a try especially if they enjoy romantic suspense too.
My thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Lou is a Daierwolf. Essentially, an extra intelligent shapeshifter. And Daierwolves have two main objectives in life.
Firstly, never reveal the existence of Daierwolves.
Secondly, exterminate all Chalcrocs, promptly.
Chalcrocs are infected humans that change into ferocious monsters upon the full moon. Half-human and half-somespecificanimal, Chalcrocs are not aware of what they become, and they get increasingly tougher with each change.
With some unknown threat on the horizon, Lou decides to infiltrate the French Secret Services by obtaining a job there. And in an attempt to conceal the Daierwolf existence, Lou unleashes the very threat they fear upon Paris. But with her devoted friend Cam, and her hunky new Captain by her side, the danger is still very real, but they might just survive afterall.
With a sweet little romance, cool new supernaturals, and a hilarious spitfire of a lead, Daierwolves of Paris: Lou was a fun little read, and although it wasn't amazing, I do hope the sequels get translated as well.
Roxane Dambre tells of the Daierwolves of Paris (ebook from AmazonCrossing and translated by Patrick F. Brown) who can change to any shape or partial change. They have a preferred shape. Aloysia (who likes to be called Lou) favorite shape is that of a Panther. Daierwolves also interbreed with humans. Chalcrocs, which are more like the movie werewolves with lots of hair and a killing streak that lasts for three nights a month. Lou needs to join the French Secret service because they apparently have discovered the hidden secrets. When she arrives at their headquarters she discovers, in addition to the handsome agent who recruited her, that they had one dead Chalcroc and actually captured a Daierwolf. Letting Mister Bear escape was a mistake because it turnsout he is quite mad and wants Daierwolves to rule humanity. She has somehow to capture him again, protect her sexy secret agent and keep him for learning her secret. Fun. Light fun.Review printed by Philadelphia Weekly Press
I really enjoyed this story.. some parts were slower for me which took me longer to finish then normal but overall i enjoyed the plot and characters. i really enjoyed the different types of shifters and how this was a different type of story then normal. very good read :)
Be careful, if you open this book, you will get caught in the fabulous world of Roxane Dambre, a talented and promising French author !
Do you like Paris ? Fantastic creatures ? Smart girls ? Good romance ? Then this book might be for you !
Thanks to her fabulous brain, Lou is starting a new job with the French General Directorate for Internal Security. But this young girl with a bright future is not only what she seems to be : she is part of the Daierwolves community : shape-shifter humans that have particular skills which in turn, force them to be really careful not to disclose their abilities to the real world. And while working in the French spy agency, she hopes she’ll be able to discover the true identity of a rogue Daïerwolf who could expose her race to the rest of the world.
What she doesn’t expect however is to fall in love with Joshua, the head of the department, and a human, who should NEVER discover the truth about her !
I fell in love with Roxane Dambre’s books when reading her most famous series : Scorpi, that - unfortunately - is not translated in English yet. Then, I quickly began to read her other works. When reading the Daierwolves of Paris serie, you can see that they are her first published books and that her writing style is still improving. Regardless, I think this series is refreshing and totally breaks the codes of fantastic and brings some novelty to the genre.
Also, if you’re able to read in French, then I would definitely recommend that you go through the other books of this author
Shape Shifters? Romance? Mystery? Check, Check, and Check. Though not quite how you would expect.
Daierwolves of Paris is a welcome mix of adventure, mystery, novelty, and humor, assuming you can get through the first chapter. Think death by repetitive statements of the obvious.
Aloysia is a Daierwolf, not to be mistaken with one of the nasty, uninhibited werewolves, otherwise known as Chalcrocs, that she diligently hunts in order to keep humanity safe. Equipped with phenomenal intellect, the ability to shift into any animal, and killer looks, she sets out to infiltrate the French secret service in the hunt to wrangle the creature that has been terrorizing humans and is disrupting the balance the Daierwolves strive to maintain. As the chase persists, Lou finds herself in uncharted waters, not only in her hunt, but also in matters of the heart.
The first paragraph effectively captures attention and suggests that this is not a typical werewolf romance novel, however getting through the first chapter requires tremendous effort with it’s irregular cadence, choppy world building, and Lou!
So Lou likes to make lists and she is oh so smart. I get it. Does she also like to convince herself of her superiority? She came off as this know-it-all narcissist. The way she was introduced made this character snarky and not in an enjoyable way.
Fortunately soon after adapting flow of the narrative, characters come to life in a quirky and humorous way, Lou included. The plot thickens soon after the French secret service agent, Sylvain, steps foot at Lou’s place of employment. Dambre cleverly spun shape shifters and werewolves in new light, keeping the story interesting and engaging.
Final thought. If you want a shifter novel with more to a story than romance, AND you can overlook the effects of the translation, you are in for a few laughs.

Lou is an offbeat, sexy young woman who just happens to be a Daierwolf, able to transform into any animal she likes though she prefers to be a panther. Steeped in Daierwolf tradition and adept at living undetected among humans, Lou infiltrates the French secret service in order to track down a rogue Daierwolf who threatens to end the peaceful balance all other Daierwolves strive to maintain. As she tries to restore order in her community, as well as in the whole of Paris, she meets the man she didn't think existed: her perfect mate.
With an inimitable perspective on life, the constant threat of danger looming, and love in the air, Lou demonstrates time and again why humans should be thankful for animal instincts.
Review:
I read this book a few months ago and have thought over my opinion a bit. I liked the idea of the book, I am often drawn to characters who transform into something else ... Animals, monsters, physically and even metaphorically. I was excited to dig in after I received the book for review.
Once I began reading, there were things I could not quite put my finger on about the actual writing that bothered me as I read. The writing seemed unnecessarily repetitive and lacking in flow. I just learned today that the book I read is an English translation that was originally written in French. Perhaps some of the sentence flow or lack of smooth flow could be because of the translation.
I pressed forward eventhough I did not enjoy reading the story because I hoped it would get better after the first few chapters. I was disappointed because it felt like I was just reading some things over and over and the story itself did not seem to flow in a sensible manner.
I believe it could make a great story, and perhaps the French version might come together better.
Opening line: "My mother named me Aloysia when I was born, but people usually call me Lou."
Summary: This follows the life of Lou who is a Daierwolf. Basically she can transform into an animal, her favorite is a panther. Daierwolves have been around for forever and look like humans except they are more beautiful and are highly intelligent. They fight Chalcrocs which are basically werewolves but the bad kind. Lou gets hired by the Paris FBI and gets put in their supernatural division where she meets another Daierwolf that they were able to catch and put in a cage. She releases him and all hell breaks out! Sylvain is a human FBI that adds some romance to the book and some humor.
My Take: This was a good book! I really enjoyed it. I loved the ability to change into another animal but it has limitations. Lou's age was a little too young for me to really enjoy her relationship with Sylvain who was much older but then again, the book was first published in France so there it might not seem as weird. The translation between French and English was done really well. Lou's humor was great and she was really likeable and a great heroine. Sylvain was a good balance to her. I can't wait to see what trouble Lou gets into next.
Highs: Lou's ability to transform into a beautiful panther! I love panthers and I loved that she was a cat of the night.
3,5 A nice book with a French touch =) Lou is a pretty blonde with offbeat humor who lives in Paris and works in a chic hotel with her best friend Camille. But in reality, Lou is a Daïerwolf, a person able to transform into any animal of their choice, whose mission is to kill the awful Chalrocs. Their existence must be kept secret, but when the collective unconscious of her race began to boil, Lou needs to infiltrated the French secret service to find out what's happening ... I rarely read books from French authors but I spotted this series for a long time. The writing style is flowing, the universe is nice and the characters are interesting but I don't fall for it. I found Lou somewhat overplayed (the "miaou" are nice but only for five seconds), I wanted to know more about her, about her past etc. Sylvain is not bad but I found that things were going too fast between him and Lou, that was too easy. They barely know each other but she is ready to sacrifice everything for him and they are already talking about marriage ?? A bit too contrived ... The plot was interesting but a little simplistic (seriously ? Mistake a leopard bite for a wound made by a stiletto heel ??) The universe really intrigued me but I would have liked more details on Daïerwolf ... In short, a nice book, but no more.
I'll be honest with you all I struggled with this book, and that is partly why this review is up a day later than I originally planned. I had high expectations for Daierwolves of Paris due to the positive reviews on both Amazon and Goodreads, which praised the detailed world building, humour and character development. Perhaps it was these high expectations (always dangerous) led to my dissatisfaction with this book or perhaps it was translation from French to English, which left something to be desired.
Rather than rich world building I felt instead like I was thrust into a world with little explanation, for example this is a world with three species living parallel (Daierwolves, Chalcroc & humans) yet two of the species have been kept hidden from the humans since forever I assume. Personally I felt like very little information was given into how these species came into existence and would have liked more information on how the Dairwolves functioned as a society rather than merely being teased with information...
I received this book in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley.
I loved this book! I enjoyed the story very much, it was very well written. The world building was excellent! I felt like the characters were very unique. So many different elements to this story that a lot of books in this genre are lacking! I loved the dynamic between the characters. Lou was quick witted, fiesty, charming, and an all around badass!
Aloysia is a Diaerwolf, which means she can change into any animal she wants. Her favorite shape is a Panther. In order to keep the secret world of the Diaerwolves quiet, Lou needs to join the French Secret service. When she arrives at their headquarters she must track down a rogue Diaerwolf thats trying to expose them all. As she tries to restore order in her community, as well as in the whole of Paris, she meets the man she didn't think existed: her perfect mate.
Diaerwolves of Paris is an exceptional story full of action, adventure, romance, and growth! It's an exciting read and I look forward to the next book in this series! 5 Stars
Such an interesting concept- Daierwolves of Paris can change to any shape or partial change. They mostly have a preferred shape. Aloysia AKA Lou's favorite shape is a Panther. Daierwolves also interbreed with humans. Chalcrocs, which are like the hollywood perception of werewolves- hairy killers tied to the moon. Lou needs to join the French Secret service because they found out about her secret. But her recruiter is hot, and they have one dead Chalcroc and actually captured a Daierwolf. Letting Mister Bear escape was a mistake because it turnsout he is quite mad and wants Daierwolves to rule humanity. She has somehow to capture him again, protect her sexy secret agent and keep him for learning her secret. I liked it and thought it was an interesting take on shifter. I look forward to more of this series. 4 PAWS!
Very good book. I have four stars because there was an error with the font on a few pages and I found that annoying. The story was cute but not really original..however, I am planning to read # 2 because I did enjoy the characters and curious of the next book.
