In the chilling aftermath of the Halloween homecoming massacre, the town of Newport struggles to recover from the terror unleashed by Jessica Black. But as the survivors come to terms with their losses, a new breed of horror lurks just beneath the surface, threatening to plunge them back into chaos.

We're back in Newport. Can Howie and his remaining friends get rid of the demon(s) forever? The situation has additional complication when Cory is possessed by one of the demons. Who is a member of the coven? What about Bethany? Characters and cult are first class. It is also compelling at many parts. On the other hand the whole Newport Curse series doesn't get me that off the rocker as all his other books. Maybe the idea behind with the coven is a bit dated. Everything seems a bit too predictable to me. Storytelling is excellent as usually. Really recommended!

Small backstory:

The town of Newport is once more in the limelight as the evil that consumed the town is back with a vengeance and the friends (Howie, Corey, and Bethany) are once again in the evil clutches of what lies within the town. There is no escape this time around and the friends will need to do whatever they can to make sure that Newport is a safe place to live once again!

That is about all I can give out with a small backstory so if you want to know more then go read this book! Though you will need to read the first book to understand what takes place in this book.

Thoughts:

This book was filled with everything evil this time around including demons and there was tons more blood and gore action too! The pace of the book moves fast and I read the last half of the book within about three hours! The evil penetrates deep within this story and the characters of Howie, Corey, and Bethany were brought forth closer within this story as you can feel how their friendship has grown.

The author, John Durgin has the magical ability to weave the story around the reader and make them feel that they are part of the story. I could feel the evil vibes pulsating throughout the book and it felt like I was there experiencing everything the characters were having to go through as well.

This book seemed scarier to me then the first book as there was quite a bit of occult happenings within this book and more creepy situations. Another great book by this author and it is going on my favorites shelf. Giving this book five "Creepy Evil Vibes" stars!

Consumed By Evil doesn't mess around when it comes to the gore. And it doesn't drag it's feet getting to it either!

From the first harrowing chapter you know what you're in for and this novel delivers time after time. Bloodshed, brutality, and demonic possession are all present and delivered to us in no holds barred detail by the author.

Newport is a cursed town. And after the events of the previous book, Howie, Corey, and Bethany find themselves as targets of a demon.

The coven which aims to control the entity is hellbent on providing a sacrifice and they'll slaughter anyone who stands in their way. This includes children and pets... you've been warned!

Filling in the horrific details from the previous book and adding some very unexpected surprises along the way, this book is a punch to the face of violence and terrifying supernatural encounters. I highly recommend it.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This review is voluntary and is my own personal opinion.

I received an ARC of this ebook in exchange for a review. Having enjoyed the first book in this series, The Cursed Among Us, I was eager to dive into Consumed by Evil. After reading complex novels like House of Leaves and Night Film, this book felt like a refreshing change of pace.

Consumed by Evil picks up right where its predecessor left off, plunging readers back into the aftermath of a horrific Halloween homecoming massacre in Newport. From the start, the dark, eerie atmosphere that Durgin creates is captivating.

One of the highlights of this book is the character development. Howie, Cory, and Bethany are particularly well-drawn, each struggling with their own demons. Their battles with grief, visions, and deceit bring depth to the story. Durgin skillfully builds tension, keeping the plot gripping from beginning to end.

This novel doesn't shy away from a body count, with Durgin delivering some brutal, vivid descriptions. Yet, it’s more than just gore. The story explores themes of good vs. evil, trauma, and the supernatural, balancing horror with friendship, resilience, and the lasting impact of past events. This balance between visceral horror and psychological depth makes Consumed by Evil a compelling read for fans of both supernatural thrillers and psychological horror.

👻👻👻👻 (4 out of 5 ghosts): With younger protagonists and a simpler narrative style, it leans slightly toward YA, which might appeal more to that audience. Overall, Consumed by Evil is a quick, atmospheric horror story that will keep you reading late into the night. 📚👻

So, when I was given the chance to read John Durgin’s new novel early I had to jump on it.
Consumed by Evil is everything you want from a sequel. It picks up in true Halloween two fashion right after the previous book ends. John reintroduces us to Howie, Bethany, and Corey from the first book. We also get to meet their families and see their interpersonal connections with tons of people in town outside of their friend group.
All the characters are fleshed out so well. Including the parents. A lot of people die in the first book to the possessed Jessica Black. However, the kills this time around are so much more brutal and visceral. Making this entry so much darker than the original, and so much more emotional.
I loved seeing so deeply into the three friends and how much they care for each other, and how the dread of the novel comes from then trying to find each other. With us seeing to what limits friends will go to save each other from a murderous entity. Oddly the entity isn’t what scared me the most about this book, it was the dark forces behind it, and what is being done behind the scenes. Creating a gripping tale that I couldn’t put down.
As with most of John’s books, it reads like a movie, which grips you and won’t let you go. Until the end, you will be wanting to flip to the next page to uncover the next secret.
And these secrets must be uncovered. No mystery can be unsolved. You won’t regret picking this novel up. I truly think it is his best to date, from the atmosphere to the characters, truthfully, I would love to see a movie of this someday. John is just that good.
Five stars my friend. Can’t wait for your next book!

"Small towns hold the biggest secrets..."

It's days after the massacre that rocked the town of Newport, and the town is still reeling from their encounter with Jessica and the coven. Howie, Cory, and Bethany don't know who to trust as they navigate their new reality. When Cory begins to act strange, Howie and Bethany must do whatever it takes to save their friend and town from more tragedy. While putting their trust in the adults of the town, they must work together to save Cory before it's too late.

This sequel hits the ground running and doesn't let up until the last paragraph. We learn more details about the coven and their history, as well as the history of some key characters in the story. Overall, the character development and construction were top-notch in this book. The gore level in this book is definitely increased from the original: no one is safe, and I loved it. The ending was perfectly constructed, wrapped up everything nicely, and didn't feel rushed at all. The only thing I didn't particularly love about this book was the dialogue. A lot of it didn't come off as natural, in my opinion. Despite not 100% loving the dialogue, I really enjoyed this book and thought it was the perfect sequel. Thank you, John, for the opportunity to read this ARC!

**ARC Review**
“I’d like to think those cursed among us are a thing of the past.”

“This town is consumed by evil, Howie.”

Consumed by Evil by John Durgin is on a whole other level compared to his other books. I have read everything that Durgin has written so far…and this, by far, is the darkest thing he has written to date.

We pick back up almost immediately where the first book leaves off, with Howie, Bethany, and Cory trying to make sense of the massacre that happened at the hands of Jessica Black. Consumed by grief and trying to hold everything together, the friends soon find themselves back in battle with the cult that controls their town. An evil they didn’t know existed descends on the town.

A mix of Stranger Things and a plethora of exorcism movies, this book kept me hanging on every word. It was hard when I had to put it away for stupid things like work and a home life.

If you haven’t read the first book in the series The Cursed Among Us, I beg you to do so before this book comes out. And then make sure you get this one preordered. You are in for a treat.

Consumed By Evil - John Durgin
💀
4.5/5 ⭐️
💀
Consumed by Evil takes everything that made The Cursed Among Is great, and cranks it all to 11. In the weeks following the brutal massacre that closed out its predecessor, The Cursed Among Is picks up with Cory, Howie, and Bethany as they try to figure out what exactly is going on with the secret coven that is deeply rooted in their small town.

Listen, if you haven't read The Cursed Among Us, do it. You're welcome. Then, pick up Consumed by Evil and be ready to have your shit ROCKED. The writing is fantastic, the story has depth and builds at a very solid pace, and overall this book is a really good time. It is all the things I like in a horror novel. It has heart, comedy, brutality, and kills that will make you squirm.

I can't recommend this one enough. You gotta get this one on your list ASAP!

Thank you to John for providing me the ARC in exchange for a review.

First, I absolutely loved The Cursed Among Us. Consumed by Evil picks up right where the first one left off. We learn more about the coven and its members as well as the cursed city of Newport. There were some great scenes with excellent imagery. What falls a little short me is the ending seemed a little drawn out and predictable. This felt like a bridge novel, with a possible third one on the horizon.

Thank you again for letting me read this one early and I can’t wait for more!

Big thanks to John Durgin for the ARC!

Make sure you read The Cursed Among Us before this one!

Several sequels have disappointed me but this one I found to be better than the first book! I'm so glad it picked right back up from The Cursed Among Us. Great characters and nonstop action from start to finish!

We all know a sequel is never as good as the first one…until now! This is the sequel to The Cursed Among Us, the terror in Newport is not over.

We learn more about the cursed, the town, the coven, all of it! The story was full of horror action from start to end. The author provided beautiful descriptions of graphic horror with a cinematic feel. I event caught a line paying homage to the title of the first book.

This is my third book for Durgin and I’ve yet to be even slightly disappointed. When I reviewed his book KOSA, I mentioned that the author does a stellar job and presenting the story from multiple POVs without confusion to the reader. The same holds true for Consumed by Evil. I felt connections to the characters in the first book, but you grew even closer to the three main characters in the sequel. Don’t get attached to everyone though!

Did Durgin end the book with what we hope for? An open for a third to make this a series! *Fingers crossed*

This is the second in this journey, so if you haven’t read the first, turn back now.

This is not the first run in with John i have had, and but it is the most recent.
I got this to read as a ARC , but i am going to be honest, i would have bought this anyways, his other work has been stellar, he has a short story about Santa that pretty much decimated me.

But back to this latest creation, sometimes I’m iffy about a sequel, can it ever be as good as that first introduction into the world? Sometimes it can be, this is one of those.

I am ashamed to say i had no clue there was actually going to be a sequel, when i finish a book, especially a good one, no matter how it ends, i always hope a little for another.

We actually get to be in the after math, not just fade to black, and everyone is happy and having worked through the hard shit, and now we’re all happy and cooperative.

None of that here, we got to see the darkness, not just in the supernatural but the darkness in the residents themselves. I love when a story is just more then, oh we are all cursed and acting savage because of that, no we actually see the darkness inside, and sometimes those dark tendrils creep into even the best of us, and when it gets the worst of us, the real horror sets in.

After everything we have uncovered so far, the town can’t have anymore darker secrets, right ?

Picture it, Newport, 1999….

John Durgin really paints the scene when he writes, man! Consumed by Evil is creepier, darker, and gorier than its predecessor. Growing up in the 90’s, this book gave me so much nostalgia for the time period it was set in. I loved The Cursed Among Us, but the character development in its sequel is top notch!

Thank you for the opportunity to be lucky enough to score an ARC for this book! It was incredibly well written. Sucked me in from page one until the very end. It’s everything I wanted in a sequel. Well done!

Wow! John Durgin hasn't simply written a sequel to his awesome debut novel, "The Cursed Among Us" - he's given us a book that redefines almost everything in the first novel: the cast is larger, bringing in people from every corner of the Newport town, the curse is more powerful, destroying relationships, families, and friendships, the violence has increased and the tone is far darker, and we even grow to love those we originally hated. Picking up right from where "Cursed" stopped, "Consumed" targets everything good and sweet in the first book and throws it right into the fire! Figuring centrally is the demonic possession of a beloved character; gone are the movie shots and the chasing in the woods: the action is transposed into a sort of urban fantasy mode, as Cory and Howie are forced to face the coven directly, and at the same time the coven members themselves are forced to come into the light and make sure noone remains alive to threaten their interests. This time, however, the boys have help, and it's their families who come to the rescue. For better or worse, dealing with the supernatural element in Newport becomes a family matter, revelations drop the moment you least expect it, and the evil itself this time around will stop at nothing. Noone is safe, the killings are brutal, the emotions raw and painful. The ending took me surprise - is there a third book in the works? In any case, "Consumed by Evil" reads like a teenager's nightmare after watching the Exorcist lol and kept me turning the pages to see where we'd end up. Highly recommended!

Return to a small town full of horror, but prepare for a gritty, exhilarating, macabre journey. John Durgin immerses us back into the world of the coven, but this time things are darker and more sinister than ever. Action packed, fast paced, atmospheric, and full of body horror, this sequel is a brilliant display of the author’s ability to tap into your squeamish side. This book is unrelenting in the best possible way, don’t miss out on this one.

I feel I cannot do justice to this book….never have I EVER read a sequel…that has surpassed the original! I had so many distractions while reading this, I threatened the husband and son to leave me be -multiple times bc I was X amount of time through and HAD TO KEEP ON. The character development was outstanding, completely evolved from the start but in the most organic way. The action in this, the utter suspense, atmosphere…I felt like i was in SVT (super ventricular tachycardia) throughout. This. Was. Amazing. I bow down to the new horror God John Durgin.

Consumed by Evil picks up right where The Cursed Among Us left off and is much, much, darker. The book was like a movie in my mind! It's packed with action and gore from start to finish. From the beginning, John Durgin's dark and eerie atmosphere grabs your attention.
After surviving the evil that claimed many lives, Cory, Howie, and Bethany know that it's still on the loose, but they have no clue how close it actually is. The coven wants to control the entity and will unalive anyone who gets in their way to make a sacrifice

I’m always nervous to read the sequel to a book. I always wonder if it will live up to the first story. Will I enjoyed as much? This sequel is even better than the original! There is more violence, more gore, and more craziness. This story ripped out my heart with so many different scenes! If you enjoyed the first book, you’re going to love this one! I hope we get more because it’s clear that the story is not over. This story took some. Twist that I never could’ve imagined. Be worn, though, if you read this be prepared for a lot of darkness!

This story was insane 👏 I loved The Cursed Among Us, but I have to say I think I love this one more. It was creepier and bloodier than the first book. I loved going back and visiting this crazy small town and learning more about the crazy people in it. If you loved The Cursed Among Us, you'll definitely love this one.

Consumed By Evil dives headfirst into gore and doesn’t let up. From the opening chapter, the novel sets a relentless tone, delivering bloodshed, brutality, and demonic possession in vivid, unflinching detail.

Set in the cursed town of Newport, the story picks up after the events of the previous book, following Howie, Corey, and Bethany as they become targets of a vengeful demon. The stakes are high as a ruthless coven, determined to control the entity, stops at nothing to secure their sacrifice—no one is safe, not even children or pets. Consider this you’re warning.

The book fills in gaps from its predecessor while introducing shocking twists that keep the suspense high. It’s a brutal yet captivating blend of violence and supernatural terror, packed with surprises that will leave readers reeling. For fans of intense and unrelenting horror, Consumed By Evil is a chilling, adrenaline-filled ride. Thank you Crystal Lake Publishing for the ARC!

This sequel is somehow better than the first book, which is rare, in my opinion. I was a little nervous that I wouldn't remember enough details from the first one, but Durgin did such a great job giving details throughout that it was easy to keep up. The writing style paints such a clear picture of what's going on, and I love that! Consumed by Evil has a bit more gore, but not bad at all. Great storyline, an amazing show of friendship, good vs evil, it's just a great book overall.

This is a fantastic and super entertaining horror story! There’s lots of gore, killings, mystery, and of course a demon! 😈 This story starts off with a bang and doesn’t stop with the intensity until the end!
A small town has been plagued with a horrible evil and some of the towns’ children are trying to stop it. Unfortunately this involves way more secrets from the townspeople than they realize and a force that is incredible strong.
This book has a great storyline and is very descriptive with the characters and the overall story.

Thank you to John Durgin for an arc of this amazing book. I really enjoyed it!

This is book 2 in The Newport Curse series. Book 1 is The Cursed Among Us and is out now! (Fantastic also!)

Consumed by Evil by John Durgin

Small towns are never as they seem…

I found it hard to write a review for this without spoilers to the first book so I am going to keep it short and sweet.

This is the sequel to The Cursed Among Us. One difference I noticed instantly was the maturation of John’s writing from the first to this one. This book was action packed and full of gore from the first chapter. Giving major Stranger Things vibes along the way I couldn’t stop myself from needing to know what happened next. If you’re into cults and a groups of teenage friends, this book is for you! Slated to release at the end of the month. Don’t sleep on this one!

There's not too much I can say about the plot here without giving spoilers for The Cursed Among Us. This book starts the week after the events at the end of the prequel.

Consumed By Evil is much, MUCH darker than the first, even more filled with dread inducing moments. There was one scene that made me feel sick to my stomach, and probably the most disturbed I've been by any moment in John's books so far. My heart dropped at quite a few places in this one, with moments that I truly never suspected.

John's writing just keeps getting better and better with each book he puts out.

Thank you to the author for providing a review copy.

Early reviews indicated that Consumed by Evil was a lot darker than its predecessor, and that is absolutely true. The narrative crackles with tension and no one is safe. I already went into the book loving the characters and it's hard to watch them go through it. John Durgin's writing is so cinematic that I had no trouble picturing the book as a movie in my head. It broke my heart a little bit, but I loved the book. 5 stars
