In the sun-baked Nevada desert lies Prosperity, a gold rush town with more buried secrets than residents. Ex-SRR operative Liam Harper isn’t looking for trouble when he rolls into the town; all he wants are answers to his late father’s cryptic past. But Prosperity’s buried secrets don’t stay hidden long—and Harper’s quiet search soon pulls him into a deadly game.
A ruthless security firm is tearing Prosperity apart, chasing rumours of a lost gold shipment worth millions. As tempers flare and tensions rise, Harper becomes the calm in the eye of the storm, caught between trigger-happy mercenaries, a town divided, and a century-old conspiracy that's leaving a trail of broken lives in its wake.
Armed with nothing but his wits, combat skills, and a stubborn sense of justice, Harper races to uncover the truth about the town's secret wealth – and his father's small role in protecting it. In Prosperity, danger lurks in every shadow, and trust is a rare commodity. As the violence escalates, Harper finds the price of gold is death—and the next claim could be his last.

I’ve reviewed many of Jack Gatlands books and many of my reviews talk about the characters. Always desperate for the next book and wharfs happened to them. Along comes another character for me to fall in love with!
This is similar to a Jack Reacher novel and I would have given it a four star rating, but the whole premise, the foundation of the plot, is not credible. The reader is told that in 1875, William BIckford, not an astute businessman who gave away leases to miners cheaply, somehow had this grand vision that whatever he had in the mines, would be worth a lot money than gold in the future. But in 1875, the horse and buggy is the main source of transportation. Cellphones would not be invented for another 125 years, and it really stretches the credibility that BIckford foresaw the anomalous deposits (rare earth minerals) would be worth billions. Somewhat less a stretch, but still not quite believable, is the famous Winchester that Doc Holliday gifted Bickford. However, Holliday’s fame as a gunfighter occurred because of and after the Gunfight at the OK Corral. That occurred in 1881, not 1875.
Most of the reading I do now is this genre. I prefer The British form. Jack Garland is a master of this genre. I was concerned when I discovered the story was based in the States. However within two pages, I found that the style had crossed the boundaries and I was able to emerge myself in the characters and the story. I'm ready for the second installment of this series.
The first in the Liam Harper series. Harper is an ex British special forces soldier who arrives in Prosperity, Nevada, following his deceased father’s footsteps. Of course, nothing is what it seems. An action-packed thriller with an interesting story and well done characters. I can’t wait for the next one!
The last review I wrote about the Declan Walsh series was not complimentary. Too complex, boring etc. This type of book suits me. It gives the author a degree of latitude in complexity . Anyway, as a successful author will never read this review. I will stop and read only the thrillers Gatland writes
A thourghly convincing plot with believable characters,a fast paced story line and believable scientific research. Kept the interest going from start to finish without being predictable.5*!
I enjoyed reading this novel which is the first in a series. Good characterisation. Fast paced. Believable story. No spoilers from me but I am looking forward to the next one.
Liam Harper is an intriguing new character with many more stories to tell. I can't wait for the second book in the series. Jack Gatland never disappoints.
Final Claim by Jack Gatland is book 1 in the Liam Harper series, a new series by this author. Liam is an ex-SRR operative (part of the UK Special Services) and we first meet him as he rolls into Prosperity, Nevada, on his motorbike. Liam is calm and measured, strong and capable, but what is his real reason for being in town. He is certainly able to look after himself, or has he taken on more than he can handle. Jack Gatland is a fabulous storyteller, and you quickly become caught up in this great adventure story. Liam has had an interesting life, and we learn a bit about him in this first book. I look forward to learning more as the books come along. This is a thrilling read, and a lot of research has gone into it. It races along full speed ahead and kept me so involved in what was going on and what was going to happen next, I whizzed through the book.
