In Forget the Fairy Tale and Find Your Happiness, Deb Miller dismantles the traditional narrative of romantic salvation and replaces it with something far more empowering: self-discovery, resilience, and authenticity. This compelling memoir chronicles Miller’s transformation from a traditional Midwestern wife into a global executive, weaving personal and professional milestones into a deeply relatable, empowering narrative.

At the heart of the book is Miller’s realization that the “Prince Charming” fantasy—one that countless women are raised to believe in—often sets up unrealistic expectations that leave little room for personal agency or growth. When her college sweetheart fails to fulfill the fairy tale she had envisioned, Miller takes charge of her story. Rather than becoming embittered, she channels her disappointment into determination, ultimately building a successful career rooted in her love of tennis and her tenacity to rise through corporate ranks.

What distinguishes this memoir is Miller’s candidness. She doesn't shy away from sharing the painful truths—an emotionally complex second marriage, the challenges of single parenthood, and the sacrifices required to pursue a career on a global stage. Yet, she writes with warmth, insight, and often wit, offering reflections that are as thoughtful as they are inspiring.

Miller cleverly parallels her own evolution with the changing portrayals of Disney princesses. Where once fairy tales centered around waiting to be rescued, modern versions—and Miller’s own life—celebrate independence, courage, and self-determination. These comparisons enrich the narrative, highlighting broader cultural shifts while grounding the story in something universally familiar.

Ultimately, Forget the Fairy Tale and Find Your Happiness is not just a memoir; it’s a roadmap for women who feel trapped by outdated narratives of love, success, or self-worth. Miller’s story encourages readers to question what “happily ever after” really means—and to find the courage to redefine it on their own terms.

Forget the Fairy Tale and Find Your Happiness by Deb Miller is an inspiring and beautifully written memoir that challenges the traditional narrative of waiting for Prince Charming and instead celebrates the strength, resilience, and independence of women. Throughout the book, Deb Miller takes readers on an intimate journey through her life. From her traditional upbringing, to her college years of chasing the fairy tale dream and even rising to the top of the corporate world. All while discovering her identity through various set backs.

What makes this memoir unique, is the way Miller draws thoughtful parallels between her life and the evolution of Disney princesses. She compares parts of her life that align with the princesse's story and flips the perspective to spread the message that you don't need a "prince" to be a princess. Her writing is engaging and making readers feel like they’re right there beside her on every step of her journey.

Miller’s story is a strong reminder that fulfillment comes from within and not from societal expectations of finding a "happily ever after.” Whether you’re a mother, daughter, student, or single woman trying to figure out your own path, this book will leave you feeling inspired. I highly recommend this book.

Deb Miller’s book “Forget the Fairy Tale and Find Your Happiness” is a story of modern feminism. It is a reminder that women can be whomever and whatever they want to be.

Throughout her childhood, Miller had it engraved into her head that college was about finding her “Prince Charming” rather than finding herself. She was taught, from a young age, to sit pretty and wait for a man to come along to take care of her. However, once entering college, Miller finds her true purpose and passion, learning more about herself and her identity. The story begins by following Miller throughout college and finding her “Prince Charming”, but will it last? Will Miller have to choose between a traditional fairy tale life and her career? What happens when the couple faces struggles?

Miller reminds all women that your independence and autonomy are most important. She reminds us that we should be doing whatever we want to do, not what others want us to do. The story shows how following someone else's path for you can end in a not-so-happy way, how in choosing the wrong path, you may lose yourself, while simultaneously gaining wonderful things (like children) and learning more about yourself.

This true story is a reminder that women can do it all. They can have successful careers, they can be a wife, they can be a mother. Ultimately, they can be whomever they want to be. Miller’s story is one of women empowerment, an inspiring story that can empower women for generations to come. She reminds us all that we can create our own path and journey, that we are able to do whatever we want to do so long as we put our mind to it.

This was a wonderful read, and I fully recommend all women give it a read.

Forget the Fairy Tale And Find Your Happiness📖

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️

I don’t often find myself reaching for a memoir, but I am so glad I read this one. I cannot recommend this book enough. This is a must read for moms, daughters, single ladies, all women!! (This would also make an excellent gift!).

I escaped into this this book and finished it in two days. It is so well written and immersive. I learned a lot from this book (which is always wonderful) and found that I can translate some of these insights from the book into my daily life.

I absolutely loved how Deb Miller related her story to that of Disney Princess. I grew up with these Princess and now after reading her story and her reaction to these movies, I see them from a completely different view point. “Girls don’t need a prince, they’re optional.”

Deb Miller taught herself and can teach us as readers how to ride our own horses. We do not have to wait for a man in shining armor on a noble white steed. Find the reins of your own life!

Forget the Fairytale and Find Your Happiness is just one of those books. From start to finish it’s consuming, Deb tells her story in a way that makes you feel like you are her and experiencing everything exactly as she is. She is brave and independent even when she doesn’t realize it herself, spending decades putting her kids and work before herself to give them the best opportunities and life possible. This story is inspiring and motivating, there might not be a Prince Charming coming to save the day but that doesn’t mean you can’t create your own fairytale life with your loved ones. I’m in awe of the resilience and perseverance Deb has shown throughout her life. This is a must read

Deb Miller’s compelling life story in Forget the Fairy Tale and Find Your Happiness is one that will change yours. She takes us through the winding road of her life, from an upbringing that taught her to sit pretty and let a man take charge, to breaking free of these ingrained expectations.
I was profoundly inspired by her career and ability to find a perfect work-life balance amidst the chaos. This book not only empowers women to redefine their paths but reminds us that we are ultimately responsible for our own happiness.

I read this memoir over the course of one evening. I like the way that Deb correlates the fictional Princesses movies to how women perceived what was correct for them in the different time periods.

Deb also uses those characters’ descriptions as jumping off points to what was happening in her life.

The book moved fast and even though it was nonfiction with lessons to share there was a lot of juicy drama about Deb’s relationships.

What a memoir! Deb’s story was inspiring and I’m so glad she shared it. I love that she made the most of opportunities and charted her own course time and time again. Deb shared the good, bad, highs and lows personally and professionally which made her really relatable for me. I could go on and on but I’ll close by saying that I have a lot of respect for the fact that she stayed true to herself and her kids no matter what.

Deb Miller grew up when expectations of a female’s life path were not what they are today. College, probably - but as an avenue to find a husband over a degree leading to a successful career.
I enjoyed reading her experiences and related to some, which were sometimes frustrating!
Her memoir takes us through her marriage to college sweetheart, Scott, as they start their family and life together. She eventually realizes he’s not “the one” - lack of motivation on his part being a glaring factor. They dissolve the marriage but remain friends and co-parents. This part I could go along with.

Next, she meets a Russian tennis player, Sergei. This is the part that I found so hard! I kept wishing I could tell her “no! red flags everywhere! run!”
She does end up in a marriage with him and has a child. Fear of custody issues keeps her stuck for many years.

Those are just a few snippets of the story and the views that Dr Miller shares - good reminders and wise guidance of staying true to yourself, and not rely on a Prince Charming to be the rescuer for all things.

The beginning of each chapter features a Disney princess with the changes from being helpless female characters to independent people with their own ideals and life journeys

An Inspiring Story of Resilience and Transition

When Deb Miller is accepted into Purdue University, she’s ready to take the world by storm. Her mother, however, makes it clear her primary goal is to earn her "MRS degree," as was the custom for some families in those years.

Early on, Deb meets her Prince Charming. Soon after they graduate, marry, buy a home, and have children. Cracks in their marriage appear as her husband’s lack of ambition becomes clear—a flaw she’d glimpsed in college but ignored in the glow of love. Although her post-college life starts like a fairy tale, setbacks soon follow, including divorce and a life-threatening car accident.

Deb's turning point comes when her passion for tennis leads her to take part in an international tennis exchange with Russia. The friendships formed broaden her world, highlight her marketing talents, and reveal her compassion for helping others.

Without spoiling too much, as her children gain independence, Miller rockets into the business world, and becomes a CEO. Some of her romantic decisions along the way made me want to reach into the pages and protect her from not-great decisions borne out of passion rather logic. (Who hasn’t been there?) For me, the best memoirs reveal not just triumphs but also missteps and vulnerabilities.
What’s fascinating is how Miller structures her story to mirror Disney’s five-decade arc—from Cinderella getting rescued by a prince to heroines forging their own paths. I was enthralled to learn about Disney's evolving presentation of female leads, from helpless damsels to heroines.

Forget the Fairy Tale, Find Your Happiness delivers an inspiring story of resilience, showing how a woman transitions from expecting someone else to lead her forward and instead, raises her family, builds a career despite obstacles, and ultimately discovers she doesn’t need a prince to create a fulfilling, remarkable life.

Once upon a time, author Deb Miller believed in happily ever after. She still does. Only this time, it doesn’t involve Prince Charming on his white steed carrying her off into the sunset.

In her honest and beautifully crafted memoir, “Forget the Fairytale and Find Your Happiness,” Miller shares her journey from first fitting into the glass slipper to ultimately breaking the glass ceiling. Following the traditional roles for women of wife and mother, Miller works hard to keep her marriage together at the same time as she works to provide the best life for her children. The correlation she draws between the Disney Princesses and her own evolution is fascinating.

Miller’s ability to refocus her beliefs and direction is empowering and shows that it’s possible to create a purposeful, meaningful life even when things don’t go according to plan. Forget the Fairytale and Find Your Happiness is much more than an interesting story. It’s a significant reminder to believe in your own power.

This book should be read by all women. It reminds us how believing in the fairy tale of Prince Charming is an illusion. That a woman’s best hope of happiness comes from herself. Deb does a beautiful job of taking us through her life and we get to witness how self-growth paid off not only for her but her children as well. 5⭐️

An inspiring memoir about overcoming societal stereotypes, persevering through tough circumstances, and discovering one's true happiness.

I was really intrigued by how this book was pitched to me. I was told that it was a memoir that examined classic Disney fairy tales and flipped them on their heads. I found the way that Deb compared her life to fairy tales was quite astute, and the way that her life evolves with Disney's princess narratives was really interesting to hear unfold.

Deb goes through two unsuccessful marriages, raises three kids practically on her own, and has an amazing career in the marketing sector. Despite everything that tries to hold her back, Deb perseveres and doesn't let anything stop her success story. Her life may not have played out like the fairy tales, but that doesn't mean that she hasn't found her happily ever after.

The way that children are influenced by media is a topic that I am quite passionate about. From a young age, we condition our children (especially young girls) and tell them that they must find a mate to be happy and that they will be viewed as abnormal if they aren't seeking out love as soon as possible. I think this is quite sickening, and I think it is really important to showcase all types of lifestyles in which people are happy and thriving, even if they are unmarried, divorced, perfectly happy raising their pet cat, or any other form of living. Deb does a great job of showcasing how her life story was atypical to how it plays out in the movies, but that is perfectly alright (and honestly how it should be). Everyone should be able to live their life the way that they want to, and society has got to lose its hold on who one should love and how they should do it; it's truly not society's business anyway.

I can definitely relate to some of the events that Deb had to go through with her second husband, Sergei. I am only a teenager myself, so I'm not married, but I see a lot of my dad in Sergei. It is always comforting to me to know that not everyone has access to the picture-perfect father, but I also find it soothing to know that my childhood could have been filled with even more strife at the hands of a man.

Overall, "Forget the Fairy Tale and Find Your Happiness" is a powerful memoir that is filled with inspiring circumstances and sound advice. The influence the media has on us is a topic that I find quite interesting, so I found Deb's thoughts on Disney princess movies to be quite interesting. The feminist themes in this book are ones that many young women need to hear, and I'm so glad that Deb was willing to share her story. I hope it reminds people that happiness isn't determined by the person you love, the things you wear, or the money you make. We all have the chance to find our own happiness, and it is up to us not to throw that opportunity away. This book is a solid reminder that it is never too late to follow one's dreams and try to make one's life just a little brighter.

Sometimes the most powerful stories are the ones that shatter our preconceived notions about how life "should" unfold. Deb Miller's debut memoir, Forget the Fairy Tale and Find Your Happiness, does exactly that—and it's absolutely magnificent.

From the moment I saw that enchanting cover with its whimsical butterfly and magical sparkle trail, I knew this wasn't going to be your typical self-help memoir. Miller has crafted something truly special here: part personal growth guide, part motivational memoir, and—as she puts it—all heart.

What struck me most was Deb Miller's brilliant use of Disney princesses as metaphors for her own journey. As someone who grew up believing in the Prince Charming narrative (didn't we all?), I found myself nodding along as she traced the evolution from passive Snow White to independent Moana. It's a framework that's both accessible and profound, making complex themes of self-discovery surprisingly relatable.

Deb Miller's transformation from midwestern housewife to global marketing executive isn't just inspiring—it's real. Her candid exploration of divorce, single parenting, and career reinvention feels authentic in a way that many memoirs struggle to achieve. There's no sugar-coating here, no pretense that taking control of your narrative is easy. Instead, Deb Miller offers something better: honest hope.

I was particularly moved by her tennis metaphor woven throughout the book. As someone who's found unexpected strength through sports myself, I appreciated how she used her passion as both escape and empowerment. It reminded me of my own moments of clarity that came not in meditation or therapy, but in the simple act of moving my body and challenging myself physically.

Perfect for fans of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and readers of Brené Brown, this memoir doesn't just tell you to be your own hero—it shows you how. Deb Miller's writing is warm, witty, and wonderfully encouraging without being preachy.

Forget the Fairy Tale isn't just permission to rewrite your story; it's a roadmap for anyone ready to climb onto their own white horse and ride toward their authentic happily ever after.

This was such a fantastic memoir filled with wit, humor, and a lot of heartbreak. I loved seeing Miller compare herself and her love life to the Disney princess happily ever after mindset. I will admit that I thought of love this way when I was a child too, and now, as a 34 year old woman, I now know that the world is not all rainbows and sunshine like I was led to believe. She does a great job of getting us out of this mindset and showing how strong and resilient women can be, even when they are alone in many aspects. The tennis stuff was also interesting since it’s one of the only sports I really like! Overall, a great memoir!

For much of her life, Deb Miller focused on marriage and family, conflating societal norms with personal satisfaction and happiness. This led to two failed marriages, but also to professional success and joy in motherhood. In her memoir, the author navigates life and love, eventually discovering that what she has built as a mother and a talented professional is indeed the life she always wanted.

Our heroine enjoys challenges in the workplace but persists in thinking marriage needs to be part of her path. This internal push-pull leads her to make several poor choices in matters of the heart. She marries and divorces twice: first to a kind man with no ambition and the second time to a Russian with very different cultural and personal values who sees infidelity as the status quo. The expectations of both her spouses never align with her own, but she still clings to the idea of marriage—so deeply has it been ingrained into her vision of the future. When she finally understands the impact of those clashing expectations, she learns to embrace her choices.

This is an engaging and rollicking ride through one woman’s life from a conservative and traditional upbringing through an understanding of her own talents, drive, and choices—good and bad. The author effectively uses the history of Disney princesses as a foil for her own evolution into a single, smart, powerful woman who embraces her own priorities of work and raising her children. Just like the Disney princesses, her journey began during an era when American girls were raised to believe that someday their prince would come. And just as Disney princesses have evolved to become strong and independent women able to find their own “happily ever after,” so too the author shakes free of societal norms. With wisdom and self-awareness, her journey to selfhood has a happy ending, one that she herself defines.

As a first-generation immigrant, I found Deb Miller’s story unexpectedly moving and deeply relatable. Her book is far more than a reflection on relationship dynamics from the 1970s onward. It is a powerful testament to perseverance, self-growth, and the complex choices women make across different seasons of life.

I was especially inspired by her upward-lift life motto: raising children with intention, creating opportunities where none existed, and relentlessly bettering herself despite life’s twists and turns. Deb becoming a CPA during maternity leave simply because her family needed the income speaks volumes about her determination. Her fierce commitment to opening doors for her children, and the way she turned a small neighborhood tennis program into a path that ultimately launched her into a VP of Marketing role, show both grit and brilliance.

Professionally, she held herself to the highest standards, often a perfectionist. Personally, she compromised more than many readers might expect, revealing the complicated balance between ambition and love. Her vulnerability, kindness, and willingness to help others are woven throughout the memoir.

To my own surprise, I could not put down a book titled Fairy Tale and Happiness. It is honest, insightful, and unexpectedly empowering. Deb Miller’s journey reminds us that real happiness is not a fairy tale. It is built through courage, resilience, and the choices we make every day.

Deb really explores the theme between the Disney princesses we are all raised on wanting to be and real life. We were all raised on these fairy tales where there is always a happy ending with a handsome prince to come and save the day with marriage and a wonderful life. As Deb discusses her life in comparison to these Disney princesses, you really feel connected to her and as if at times you have felt the same way. Women very much now have to have a profession in order for a family to survive, so there is that much more pressure on us to be wives, mothers, professionals as well as do all of the other normal house chores, shopping, schedules and anything else thrown our way and Deb explores all of that through her wonderfully written novel. It often takes a prince or two to find the right one, as well as our own hard work and putting ourselves first. I really enjoyed that you didn't feel alone after reading this and know others have also struggled with finding their prince while navigating the real world but that it's ok for us to chose ourselves, our wants and our needs sometimes. We have to in order to survive and stay sane with all of the expectations of women. Thank you to the author for the complementary novel and not being afraid to share her story with the world and to Suzy Approved Book Tours for the invite. This review is of my own opinion and accord.

Deb Miller’s memoir begins with her following the path she was always told would lead to happiness—go to college, meet a nice guy, get married, and start a family. She does everything “right,” just like the fairy tales and social expectations taught her. But after years of struggle, disappointment, and self-reflection, she realizes that the life she was chasing wasn’t making her truly happy. Her story is a powerful journey of breaking free from those old narratives and learning to define happiness on her own terms.

I found this book incredibly empowering and relatable. Deb’s story reminded me how often women are conditioned from a young age to expect a perfect ending—marry the right person, have the right life, and everything will magically fall into place. But life isn’t that simple. Her story shows that fulfillment comes not from fantasy, but from facing reality with courage.

Every woman should read this book. It’s a reminder that your happily ever after doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. You create it by doing what makes you feel alive, whole, and true to yourself. This memoir isn’t just a story—it’s a wake-up call and a warm, encouraging push toward living life on your own terms.

Deb Miller married her college sweetheart at age 21, believing that finding her prince would give her everything she wanted in life. “Just smile,” her mother told her. Through the women’s movement of the 1970s and 1980s, Miller began to experience how inaccurate that fairy tale was, and how much strength and determination she would need to take care of her children.
Paralleling the gradual transformation of passive Disney heroines into brave adventurers who strike out on their own and recognize their power, Miller charts the course of her inspiring life as she realized that nobody was going to rescue her, and she had to achieve what she wanted through more education, very hard work, stoicism, and concern for others. Although women have come a long way, they still need to hear the wisdom in Miller’s story: be the CEO of your own life.

Deb Miller’s memoir Forget the Fairy Tale and Find Your Happiness is a heartfelt and inspiring story of self-discovery and empowerment.

As a child, Miller was keenly aware of the conventional Disney wisdom that a prince was the ultimate solution and of society’s guidance that a woman’s role was homemaker and caregiver. However, as her life evolved, Miller realized the need for a prince was far from essential and women could be strong, successful leaders, all while raising thriving children. Yet, her personal life was far from a fairy tale and the illusion of a perfect marriage began to fade.

Miller shows her vulnerability by revealing personal details with grace and honesty. Her book is inspirational, captivating and honest —a genuine story told from the heart. She ultimately learns that true happiness comes not from fairy tales but from carving out one’s own path – a powerful lesson for women today.

Let's get real - I chose this book for the cover vibes. It speaks to my soul!

Ready to ditch the glass slipper and rewrite your own happy ending? This real-life glow-up is the book we didn’t know we needed. Deb takes us on a wild, inspiring ride that proves life doesn’t need a prince to be magical.

The book kicks off with a crack in the fairy tale mold and sets her on a new path. Along the way, she ditches the damsel vibes and channels her inner warrior princess (think Moana with a brief Sleeping Beauty nap).

This memoir sparkles as Deb’s journey parallels the evolution of Disney princesses—from waiting to be saved to saving themselves. It’s fun, heartfelt, and full of wisdom bombs about resilience, identity, and what real success and happiness look like.

Bottom line? This book is for anyone who’s ever questioned the script they were handed. It’s honest, empowering, and full of hope. Five stars and a fist pump for this fearless, feel-good read.

She challenges the idea that life has to follow a perfect "fairy tale" path and reminds us that even when things don’t go as planned, we can still create our own happiness. Through her many life experiences, Miller shares a story that many readers can resonate with in many different aspects. Reading about Miller's accomplished career is motivational for young women entering the business field. Her book is also great for mothers trying to find the best work/life balance. This book is a great reminder for women of all ages, that taking control of your own journey, rather than waiting for someone else to shape it, can be truly life-changing.

My goodness Deb! We have much in common. The first part of your book I was saying, "yep - uh huh - yikes - me too - don't do it!!!"
