I enjoyed this opening story the best, centered around young Emily, who finds herself kidnapped and trapped in a barn with 4 other women. The writing was sharp, Emily was smart, and I am interested enough to want to continue reading further in Middleton's Roamers sequence of stories.
Emily has just moved away from home for college. She ventures out at night to get a soda from a nearby machine and encounters a very pale man. Not only does he know her name, but he knows she’s also on her own. She tries to run, but he catches up to her easily, laughing all the while. When she regains consciousness, she finds herself trapped inside a barn, definitely not in the city where she had just moved to, with a group of other women for company. The pale man has company with him, just as pale as himself, and there is an unknown monster lurking in the rafters. Emily is determined to escape, but there are still further dangers to come to light in this remote location.
This is a very short novella, introducing The Night Roamers series, featuring predictable traditional vampires. We’re talking the basic evil, pale-skinned, red-eyed, fanged, drink your blood, incredibly strong, with inhuman speed cliched type. So, if basic vampires are your thing, by all means pick this up. Me, I’m always looking for something new, different, genre breaking, so this didn’t sell me on the series it introduces (though I already have book 1 since it was included in the same collection as this short, so I’ll probably give it a try anyway). The story itself was a fun, engaging read where Emily struggles to escape the predicament she finds herself in, and valiantly manages to hold her own against over-whelming odds when you realize what she’s up against (which was obvious straight from the beginning when there’s so much emphasis on the pale skin and red eyes and the inhuman abilities of the men who kidnapped them). (It reminded me a lot of the crime shows I watch, specifically Criminal Minds).
"Wicked (A Night Roamers Short)" by Kristen Middleton is a captivating supernatural tale that leaves readers craving more. In this short story, Middleton skillfully weaves a dark and enchanting world filled with vampires and intrigue. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is both engaging and suspenseful. Despite its brevity, the story manages to deliver a satisfying dose of suspense and supernatural elements. Middleton's writing style is concise yet evocative, making it easy for readers to immerse themselves in the narrative. Overall, "Wicked" is a bite-sized treat for fans of the paranormal genre, leaving them hungry for more of Middleton's work.
This was an okay short about a girl who is kidnapped with others by "Roamers" (vampires). The writing isn't bad, but the story was kind of 'meh' for me.
this one was a short one. It was decent. A young girl is kidnapped and tries to get away. She ends up thinking she had a bad dream, but realizes it wasn't a dream when she finds she has fangs!
This is not something that I would normally read, and it seemed to be aimed more towards the YA readership. Having said that for a short story it seemed to start well, but the ending seemed to be less than satisfying. The plot started going down a predictable route, but with only a limited amount of space it was quite understandable.
I really enjoyed this book. It was exciting and made me really want to read her series. The only complaint I have is that it was too short. I know its like a short story to introduce the series and I must say it does its job of getting you hooked. I am pretty excited about reading the rest of the books.
The story took off right from the start. I was turning pages as quick as I could that was how much I was in to it. But then all of sudden it ended. I realize it is a short story but it has the storyline that could rock. Death, betrayal, justice, revenge, romance,,,,,,
this was so freaking good!!! I loved it so much!!! I went into not knowing it was a short story but still amazing!!! So freaking good!!! I can't even explain!!! I would've given this 5 stars but the names got me confused for a while in the beginning. But nevertheless amazing!!!
