Tyler Koontz is Trojan gold all the way. There’s nowhere he loves to be more than on the football field.
Sam Nolan is Skyhawk red born and raised. With her mom's alcohol problem and her dad's recent death, she lives for her little brother who is a big football fanatic.
There’s one rule in this town...
Trojans and Skyhawks don’t date. EVER.
So when Tyler and Sam fall fast and hard for each other, what are they to do? Keep it a secret of course.
The problem is in a town this small, secrets don’t stay secret for long.

I was a bit disappointed by this book. It was cute, but I didn't feel a deeper connection to the story. I don't know if it is because I don't know anything about football, but I think things felt a bit rushed either way.
Tyler and Sam were fun people, but I never felt that I really knew them as well as I usually do Cassie's characters. I don't know anything about them besides their love of football. And I know nothing about football. And I suppose that could be the problem, that I couldn't relate to them. But I also felt that it was rushed, that it felt a little bit like insta-love, or close to. I found it hard to believe that they fell for each other so quickly.
But the story was cute, and I really enjoyed seeing Tyler and Sam trying to teach people that its ok to love whoever you want to love. It was a cute story, but only skimmed the surface.
I love this book! Tyler is the wide receiver for his high school team, the Trojans. Sam is a Skyhawk, her cousin plays for the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks and Trojans have a deep rivalry but Sam and Tyler can't help their feelings. This was a Romeo and Juliet style story and it was so good! I loved Sam and Tyler! I loved the football aspect but even if you're not a fan of American football, you'll still be able to enjoy this story. The side characters were fantastic - I loved Sam's brother and Tyler's little sister (and Hunter! Maybe he can get his own story???) I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for something funny and sweet with a really great story! I loved this one so much I'll definitely re-read it again!
I'm a sucker for forbidden love stories and this one was no exception. This book was absolutely adorable. I loved Tyler the minute he was on the page and Sam was my type of girl. Though, my favorite character may just be Sam's little brother, Josh. With everything that she was dealing with, he represented the innocence and he did so in a glory of cuteness. I just wanted to climb into the book and squeeze him!
There were some laugh out loud moments, but there was also some really heartbreaking ones as well. The ones that really pull at your heart strings and have you thinking about it way after you put the book down.
Once I started reading I didn't want to stop. I would definitely recommend!
This story is about a school rivalry and Sam and Tyler are caught on opposite sides. They decide to keep their relationship a secret because there is a lot of animosity between the schools and they don't want anybody getting hurt.
I ADORED Sam and Tyler!! They were soo cute together!
Tyler especially was pretty swoon worthy for a young adult hero. He takes time out of his life to take his little sister out to the park and even plays with barbies with her! I found that utterly charming.
Spoilers!
The two things I didn't quite enjoy was the how far the whole rivalry thing went and Brad (Sam's cousin). My high school didn't have any "rivalries" so maybe it's just me who couldn't grasp such deep devotion to a school, but I just thought it was nuts. And I hated Brad so damn much! I wanted him kicked off the football team, expelled from school, and thrown in juvie. He got off wayy too easy! What he did to the other players and Tyler was unacceptable, and what went on in his house was no excuse for him to do those things. And I was a little disappointed in Sam who protected that bully and gave him a second chance. I wouldn't have protected my own brother if he did that to me. Shit.
And the resolution at the end felt like it came out of thin air. Five pages ago everyone was gung-ho against each other and now they're all buddy-buddy? Please.
Other than that, I loved reading about Sam and Tyler. I don't read much young adult anymore but sometimes it's sweet to read about the innocent first love. ♥
I LOVE football. Mix it with some Romeo and Juliet (without the tragic ending) and you've got yourself one fantastic book.
It's impossible not to love Tyler. He's cute and loyal and funny. He plays Barbie dress up games with his little sister! And when he falls for Sam its just so, so perfect.
Sam is a tough girl on the outside, but inside she's struggling to keep her and her brother happy. Both of these characters felt so authentic and real. And the relationship these two have with their little siblings makes this story all the better.
I think one of the best parts about this tale is Sam's cousin, who is the antagonist of the tale. His past doesn't excuse his behavior, but it explains it. I love that he's not just an evil kid.
I highly recommend this book. Even if football isn't your thing, this book is more than that. It's about loyalty. To your team. To your town. To those you love.
I absolutely loved it. It was a little too ya and clean for my current tastes but despite these facts I was actually drawn into the story. The authors dedicated this book to all the readers who love love stories and had to sit through Romeo and Juliet so I expected a great love story with a happy ending. And boy did they deliver!!! I cried at parts and the last 15% of the book made my romantic heart (who wanted another ending for Romeo and his Juliet) sing. Recommend to all who love a well written, sweet, clean and fresh ya story about a couple overcoming the odds.
4.5 stars -- I'm really loving all these books loosely based on novels/plays/etc. And this one is no exception. I stress the term loosely, but at the same time this book had so many clever allusions (if that's the right word) to Romeo & Juliet....I seriously loved every time I came upon one! But I am most epically grateful that the ending deviated....otherwise I would be a weeping mess.
Seriously guys, these characters were just fantastic. Sam had the more "tragic" background I guess, so most of the character struggles were on her end. Her home-life was heartbreaking at times. And I thought her character handled it in a realistic way -- she was loving and awesome with Josh, but still heartbroken and a bit resentful of her mother internally. And I didn't blame her one bit. But at the same time she still remained so sassy and smart, and most of the time seemed very sure of herself. I LOVED the way she interacted with Tyler. I'm drawn to the shy girls naturally, but I find it eminently refreshing to read about a bolder girl who isn't afraid to go after the guy and tell him what she thinks and wants!
Tyler was like epic book boyfriend material. He was hilarious (though he wasn't always trying to be), he was romantic, and awkward, and just cheek squishingness. I loved watching him interact with EVERYONE he encountered -- from his hilarious large and boisterous family, to his friends, to Josh and the mini-footballers, to most especially Sam.
And that's where this book hits it out of the park -- Sam and Tyler together. Since the relationship has to remain a secret, most of the book is spent with just them alone together. But they are like every high school romance I wish really existed. Cute, funny, sexy, awkward, real. Yup, so much good stuff.
Even the secondary characters were enjoyable -- well, maybe not Sam's cousin quite as much, but at least he wasn't black & white evil and you could kind of see some growth in him. But Josh and Parker were epic little siblings. I tend to shy away from kids in books b/c I don't always feel they're portrayed realistically, but the parts with them were outstanding. And Sam's BFF Paige was actually a fantastic BFF.
And on one last final note -- the epilogue was amazeballs. I LOVE EPILOGUES. I really do. And this one was one of my favourites of all time. :)
Sam Nolan loves football and her little brother, Josh. She’s focused on taking care of him since her mom mentally checked out after her dad died. The only other thing she’s concerned about is Number Eight-Eight, who is incredibly hot and completely off limits. He’s a Trojan and she’s a Skyhawk. The two schools are rivals on and off the football team.
But Tyler Kootz can’t stop thinking about the red-haired girl, who tackled him the first time they met. It’s forbidden, but he doesn’t care. Tyler wants to be closer to her. She’s stolen his attention and his heart.
Being together, makes taking extreme risks, and keeping their relationship a secret. If Sam’s cousin, Brad, were to find out she was a dating a Trojan, he’d flip. He plays for the Skyhawks and doesn’t think anyone should speak to a Trojan, let alone date one. Sneaking around, Sam and Tyler fall hard for each other, but it’s not perfect and it feels impossible at times to hide. They’ll have to keep hiding if they want to stay together.
First, I loved Tyler and his willingness to play Barbie’s with his little sister! Adorable! His dedication to his family was so sweet. Sam is so spunky and knows who she is, which I think is really important in a character. She’s not relying on Tyler, but is her own person and is super funny at times! I was a little bit lost in the beginning, but I grew to love Sam and Tyler’s relationship and their story. This is a Romeo and Juliet retelling that I will read over and over again. It’s not the tragic story we know, but it’s one we can love even more.
"He's a Trojan, and you know the rule." "Screw the rule."
Do you like the story of Romeo and Juliet? Do you like football? Do you like adorable love stories about first loves?
Well put those all together and you have Secret Catch! Two rival schools in the same town can be fun...unless you try to date someone from the other side.
Tyler Koontz is the top dog on the Trojan football team. Number eighty-eight for all those wondering;) He is the person everyone cheers for at every game, but sometimes the pressure can go to his head, and people can get hurt in the process.
Sam Nolan is part of a family that lives and breathes Skyhawks. But after loosing her father, her life changes completely. Not only does her mother become void, but she finds herself being her little brother's fill-in guardian.
After Sam's cousin has an interference with Tyler and his teammates, the two schools are about to be seeing a lot more of each other, and poor Sam is caught in the middle of it all.
"Does this girl go to my school? Because if she does, how in the hell have I not noticed her before now?"
The attraction between these two was instant, but nothing could ever happen. They couldn't dare to go against the "rules" of their town...or could they? What nobody knows won't hurt anyone, right? As long as their families, friends, and Sam's cousin don't find out they will be good as gold.
I enjoyed the two POVs so much. You got to see the interaction, not only between Sam and Tyler, but also their families and friends. You got to see how much these two teens not only needed each other, but how much they needed to bend the rules. They were seriously cute together, and their banter was adorable! I wanted to go back to high school and be their friend!
"Are we...Or I mean, damn...how do I?" "It's okay. Go ahead and ask." "It's sounds so lame." "Tyler..." "You want to be my girlfriend?" "Sure. I mean, until someone better comes along."
Seriously, they're so cute together! I also really enjoyed the way they each are with their younger siblings. The way that Josh looks up to Tyler, even though he knows his secret. The instant love that Parker has for Sam because she's like the sister she always wanted.
This book also has a few serious undertones. It talks about the loss of a loved one, abuse, and anger. I admit that I teared up a few times because for anyone to go through these things, or to watch someone go through it, is heartbreaking.
"I may be here with the Skyhawks, but I am on no one's side but my own."
Sam and Tyler's story is a tale as old as time, sort of speak. There will always be rivals. Like with football, people will always support what they've always known. But look closely, there just might be someone fighting for their own Secret Catch.
Great story Cassie and Jessica!!! I didn't want it to end:)
"This is becoming addicting. Kiss one was just a gateway drug." "I'm starting to crave you more than football." "Wow. That's a lot."
Love this. So much! I'll put up my whole review once I get it posted on my blog. :)
UPDATE: From the blog
I have to say, as a football fan, this book was AWESOME! And as Romeo and Juliet retelling? LOVE IT! Tyler and Sam are so wonderful together. But this isn't just simply a 'wrong side of the football field' romance. There were many other deeper problems that the authors dealt with both honestly and appropriately.
Tyler may be a big, bad football player, but he's also a total softy, and an amazing coach (even if he's acting like he's the one being coached). And Sam is one of the strongest heroines I've read in a while. I love that this story is told in dual POV, because it gives us an amazing opportunity to see what's going on in both of their lives.
I also LOVED many of the secondary characters (and was really angry with a couple of them too!). But hands down, Tyler's little sister, and Sam's little brother stole the show. They may be VERY young, but they are full of wisdom.
Here are a few updates from while I was reading:
12/20 17.0% "Tyler is a GREEN BAY fan?!?! This might be a deal breaker for me..." 12/20 18.0% "Best big brother EVER!" 12/20 34.0% "Oh my gosh...who knew a little girl's reference to my favorite Disney movie would make me cry?!?! And it's a PERFECT metaphor."
I can't tell you how many times I laughed out loud, and cried, while reading this story. It was just SO GOOD! I loved it! And you will too!
Really, really enjoyed this. Loved how strong of characters both Tyler and Sam were. There was plenty of tension and rivalry that flew right off the page. My favourite characters had to be Josh and Parker. They made the book for me. Just brilliant. Recommend.
This modern day contemporary romance is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet crossed with a bit of A Tale of Two Cities thrown in but with a bit of a twist. This is a cross town rivalry between two high school football teams the Trojans and the Skyhawks. Not only is the rivalry on the field but off it as well. Everyone associated with the Trojans absolutely hates anyone associated with the Skyhawks and vice versa.
I have to love a book where a guy gets his leg broken and another guy gets knocked out cold on a football field in the first couple of pages of a book but it’s not all violence and sport. This is after all an epic love story. Tyler literally runs into Sam as he is coming out of the locker room after the Trojans/Skyhawks game and is immediately taken by the gorgeous redhead.
Their paths cross again a couple of days later when Tyler goes to a neutral park to train and comes across Josh and his friends playing football. He offers some assistance and to play with them, then Sam arrives and he loses all train of thought and it’s obvious that the attraction is mutual. When they start dating they decide that for their own safety and that of their family and friends they must keep their relationship a secret due to the stupid rivalry between the two schools but things come to a head as others start to find out about their relationship.
Tyler is a member of the Trojan’s team. He eats, breathes, lives for and loves football more than anything in the world. He is the second youngest in his family with 3 older brothers who all play college football. His dad played in high school and college as well. His younger sibling is a sister named Parker who is no doubt the smartest member of the family. She knows exactly how to play the boys so they will do anything for her. Tyler has been known to play Barbie Prom board games and take princess loving (and football hating) Parker to the park to play. He loves his little sister almost as much as football.
Sam is a Skyhawk through and through. She loves going to watch football matches and watching her cousin Brad play in these games. Her whole family used to go together but her dad died a year ago and her mother just shut down. She spends her days on the couch drinking and crying until she passes out and then goes to bed where she continues to cry and mourn the loss of her husband. So it is up to Sam to look after her 6 year old little brother Josh. She has to be strong and look after her family and only allows herself 60 seconds of emotional time each day. On the outside she seems hard and tough but really she is just a teenager that has not only lost her father but her mother as well. I think the real stars of this book were Parker and Josh. Two cute little 6 year olds that couldn’t be more different if they tried. Parker loves anything and everything girly whereas Josh is football obsessed. He bosses everyone around and has an amazing understanding of the game and would make an awesome coach (sorry captain) one day. Parker has her brothers wrapped around her little finger but really just wants a sister and immediately falls in love with Sam. Although Josh is mortified when he finds out that Tyler is a Trojan he sleeps in Tyler’s hoodie every night and secretly is becoming very attached to him.
Sam’s cousin Brad has some serious issues. His father is abusive so he often crashes on Sam’s couch but I felt he had more than just cousinly love for her. He was skating a little bit too close to wanting more from their relationship a couple of times. Brad has some serious anger management issues that need to be sorted out. He is the one that broke Tyler’s team mates leg (for what seemed like no apparent reason) then broke another Trojan’s nose and seems determined to beat Tyler up as well.
A felt like the ending was a little bit rushed and honestly thought that there would be a twist involving one of the sets of parents when the story was told about how the rivalry first began.
I'm gonna start off this review by saying that I adore Cassie Mae's books. Seriously love them. And even though I did really enjoy this one I have to say it's not my favourite by her. There were a couple of things that I didn't like and so I'm not really sure how to rate it. At first I gave it 4.5. But then I thought about it for a bit and felt that maybe that was a bit generous. A 3-3.5 would have been too low I thought so I settled on 3.75-4. I'll start off by stating what I liked. I loved the characters of Sam and Tyler for the most part, especially Tyler. He was so cute and adorable and I loved the banter and chemistry the two of them had. Sam was a really strong character for most of the story and I liked that she stuck up for herself (most of the time) and went after what she wanted. There were plenty of laughs to be had and the overall story was well written. There were also a few secondary characters that I would love to have books about. Particularly Tyler's brother Hunter.
Now one of the things that I didn't like was the insta-love. This is just my own personal feelings but 95% of the time I really cannot stand insta-love. And this was one of them sadly. I know this was probably just going along with the whole Romeo & Juliet theme but it just wasn't for me. I would have liked their relationship to have been a bit more fleshed out. Another thing that bugged me was the whole rivalry thing. Are there really towns like this in America? Because to me it felt really over-done and wasn't that believable. If that was the whole point then fair enough, I can go along with that. But there were still a couple of other things that didn't feel very believable.
Although there were a few things that irked me, for the most part I did really enjoy the book. I got through it in a day so it was a very quick read. Apart from the rivalry, I really liked the American football aspect. I may not know a whole lot (ok hardly anything :P) about American football but I liked reading about it. I suggest everyone give this book a shot because while I didn't love it, you might :)
The things that I love most about Secret Catch are; there is no beating around the bush when I comes to the fact that Sam and Tyler like one another. There is no love triangle, no mind games, and no playing with feelings - all the things that I loath. It was refreshing and made the book all the more enjoyable.
Reasons to read Secret Catch: - It's a cute love story - There are lots of sweet moments for you to awww at - There's a whole bunch of crazy hot guys to drool over (..some may have more emphasis on the crazy rather than the hot part) - High School football (who doesn't like a love story set to that background?) - You're a big Cassie Mae fan (like me!) or a fan of Jessica Salyer - Because it's awesome and it'll make you happy with its awesome-ness
Reasons to not read Secret Catch: - . . . - I'm thinking . . . - You hate life and don't like reading awesome books?
Basically you should just take the hint and read Secret Catch. It won't disappoint.
Sam and Tyler come from rival high schools, especially when it comes to football. Tyler is on the Trojans, while Sam might not be on a team, but her cousin is on the Skyhawks the nemesis of the Trojans. When Sam and Tyler meet things change, they meet up again coincidently and even though there's a rule saying Trojans can't date Skyhawks and vice versa, Tyler can't resist Sam and they agree to go on a date. From there their love for each other grows but they decide to keep their relationship secret, but secrets have a way of coming to light. When it does Sam and Tyler are forced to make hard decisions. What's more important, a twenty year old rivalry that has nothing to do with them or their love for each other. >_<
Sam lost her military father and is now the acting adult since her mom is lost in grief and depression. Her 6 year old brother is adorable. Tyler is a very sweet guy. Both are instantly drawn to each other. I don't know much about football so a lot went over my head and got a bit tedious. The high school football teams are rivals and its a much bigger deal then it should be for them to date. I wanted to feel sorry for her cousin but I don't think I would ever be able to forgive him for acting like he did. The author didn't rush their sex life. However they seem to think the only thing teenagers can do is make out or have sex, nothing in between. Very pg13. Tyler ends up getting hurt and then breaking it off to protect her. Then they both make grand gestures and get back together.
3.5 stars. Cassie Mae always brings a sweet story that makes you smile. I liked this one, Tyler and Sam were cute and for once it felt like I was reading about highschool kids. Stupid decisions, dramatic feelings, hormones flowing. Some might call it instalove, but I felt it was more like, yeah, they are so young. It was not perfect, but it was enjoyable and cute. And I will continue to buy Cassie Mae's books without reading the blurbs ( as I did with this one), because I know I will like them. :)
loved this book! loved tyler and sam and their struggles. I was happy that Sam was so tough and confident. I loved that Tyler was a jock but didn't act like the typical "player" who acted way older than his 17 years. They acted age appropriate. They were silly and clumsy and infatuated and it was adorable. Cassie Mae is the best and this story is my new favorite. I totally didn't even think about the Romeo and Juliet aspects of the story. I think it stood on it's own without the comparison. It was just a great rivalry romance. I highly recommend it.
I quite liked this little read, it's essentially about teens and falling in love :) a Romeo and Juliet forbidden love but without the death! The writing was clear and easy to read, the characters were good, I particularly liked Sam, as she's an independent teen looking after her brother after the death of their father, she's headstrong, fiery and funny! The only annoyance I had was that it got quite heated between the two teams and there was no consequences of their actions, even though one guys ankle is broken, and our lead Tyler gets beaten pretty good..... Definite worth a read :)
It was soooo good. I love the rivarly thing used as a re-telling of star crossed lovers. I pretty much always cry when a couple that i know are supposed to be together breaks up. Even if it's only for a little while. Will there be another book about hunter?? Like how he fell in love with the best friend who friend-zoned him and he starts going out with paige then the best friend wants him all of a sudden and he has to choose??? Doo it. <3
My heart is singing! Loved it sooooooo much!!!!!! I wish I could give it more than 5 stars! Just so wonderful!!! Tyler & Sam are fantastic characters! Anyway sorry but my full review will be coming soon because it's half 2 in the morning, I NEED SLEEP!!! But it was worth it ;) Please pick this up!!! :D
I've read several Cassie Mae books and couldn't wait to read this book! It surpassed all of my expectations! While the rivalry was a bit more than I've ever experienced, it definitely played a huge part in this book. I loved seeing a relationship form while overcoming social pressures, my favorite part was watching families and people change and grow.
I'm not really into "Jock" books, but this one was jaw dropping amazing. After the first couple of pages I was in love. I haven't been able to put it down for my life. I wouldn't even go to sleep on time when I was reading this just because I would loose track of time.
i liked the romance aspect, but i thought the whole rivalry was completely blown out of proportion. i understand a little rough and tumble, but this felt almost gang-like rather than just rivals.
I really enjoyed this! It was Romeo & Juliet in a Friday Night Lights setting. The romance was quick to start but I believed it. Besides the romantic relationship, I love how the two main characters were with their siblings. It was so sweet.
