After finishing 'Razer's Ride', I was equal parts intrigued and disgusted by Ms. Begley's 'The Last Riders' series. This is definitely not a MC romance series for everyone. The members of The Last Riders, both male and female, are completely sexually uninhibited. Exhibitionism, voyeurism, ménage, and virtually anything you can think of sexually, are commonplace in their clubhouse. The club hosts a Friday night party, which is essentially a big orgy, not that they seem to restrain themselves any other day of the week. So, if you choose to read this series, be forewarned.
I'm not a reader that has many triggers or topics, such as cheating or abuse, that are absolutely "no-go" zones for me. However, I have to admit that I find the behavior of The Last Riders' members to push my boundaries. It isn't any one thing, but rather the collective behavior of the group toward sex that I find rather sleazy. All of the male members are these high-handed, manwhores. The female members, with the exception of the heroine's from each book, have been trashy nymphs with no self-respect or concern for their supposed friends.
That being said, I did find myself liking this story in spite of myself. This series seems to invoke that type of response from me. I know I should be appalled by the behavior of the characters, and I am on some level, but I'm also sucked into the story nonetheless.
This second book in the series tells the story of Viper and Winter. If you read 'Razer's Ride', you probably remember that the successful businessman, Loker James, was none other than the President of The Last Riders, aka Viper. He had been "undercover" for the past two years, integrating himself into the community, while trying to solve the mystery of his brother's murder.
During that time, Viper had been "casually" dating Winter Simmons, the local high school Principal. Of course, how "casual" their relationship was is up for debate. It seems that poor Winter didn't get the memo.
In the beginning, Winter stays strong. I was proud of her. Even though she was hurt, she sent him packing. I appreciated that she knew what her limits were and stood her ground.
Viper knows that he's screwed up big time. He wants her back, but knows that what he did is unforgivable. So, like the manwhore he is, he immerses himself in the club life.
When Winter is attacked one night, she is nearly killed. After a long hospitalization, followed by a stay in a rehabilitation center, Winter still has a long road ahead of her. Unable to walk or care for herself, Viper arranges to have her tricked into staying at The Last Riders' clubhouse to recuperate. Of course, this will give him several weeks to try and win her back over. I'm sure you can imagine where the story goes from there.
I liked the story and again, found myself rooting for the "hero", in spite of my reservations. The editing still needed a lot of work, but was improved significantly from the first book. If you're a stickler for grammar, this one will still have you cringing at several points. One error that drove me crazy was the misuse of the word "conscious" in place of "conscience". I was hoping that somebody would've clued the author in after the first book, but it apparently didn't happen.
I also couldn't help but notice the similarities in the storyline to the first book. A very reserved, uptight, good-girl meets motorcycle-riding, promiscuous bad-boy. They break up. He realizes that he wants her back. Something happens that requires her to stay at the clubhouse where he can work his charms on her and win his way back into her good graces. Change the names of the main characters and you've got another book.
Another issue that I have had with this series is how quick the "good-girls" turn "bad". I don't see why they need to lose their inhibitions and participate, albeit to a lesser extent, in the sexual depravity of the club. It just doesn't ring true to me. I'm not sure why the author seems to make it a rite of passage for her heroines, but I don't like it. To me, it cheapens them and is inconsistent with their characters' personalities, which is what drew the heroes to them in the first place. Let's face it, if they wanted a woman with no self-regard that was willing to do whatever, wherever, they could take their pick of the women already a part of their shameless MC.
All in all, I thought this book was better than the first book, but it still needs some work. As much as I'd like to hang on to my righteous indignation, I have to admit that I've allowed myself to get sucked into the lives of The Last Riders MC, trashy as they may be. I'm also still dying to read Shade and Lily's story. This book provided a little teaser for me, but I need more.
This book was an epic fail for me and I'll try to explain the reasons why. But please take into account I'll not write about the book as such, but of my reaction to it.
But first, I will start with what I consider facts, rather than opinion, as it's not only my pet peeves that caused the rating.
The story needs an editor with experience.
--Writing: Here we have an author who doesn't "know" the difference between the adjective conscious and the noun conscience. (Quote: "It had to be your guilty conscious" and "All this time during the last few months, you have just been soothing your conscious".)
--Plot: the story has quite a few holes. I haven't read the first book. Unfortunately this may be a common enough occurrence that it has to be taken in consideration. So I don't know if the Sheriff or the Pastor in the first book were part of the MC or the mafia club. But we are given no reason here why two of the most important people in a small town ignore the (disabled) heroine's request for help. There's also the very weak explanation on the culprit. These are just a very few examples, but the plot is full of them, including the fact that yes a schoolmistress can't live within a motorcycle clubhouse. And the reason is not lack of a wedding band. I'm sorry, it's not personal opinion, but this is not a fantasy. As such it should reflect life.
Now, my reaction. Please, turn around if you have a weak stomach, this is a rant attack :)
While I was reading this book I was pissed (extremely pissed) for, well, all of it. I can't believe and neither accept this portrait of a woman. He's worse than an ass. He's a liar, a cheater and full-blown bastard. But what I really hated was the heroine. She's worse than a doormat, at least that is made of some material. She's nothing. As in any romance when you depict such a hero, you need the right heroine or the message I get it's pretty bleak.
He steamrolls her in every way and she accepts all and say thank you. I loathe this new version of the "old-time-rapey-fantasy". Whatever limits she has, he blunders them with a hammer and what the story says is: but she wanted it (even when she says no and keeps saying no)! But hey her body commands her mind... He lies to her for two years on his identity and his intentions, using her to get to her cousin; he kidnaps her (for her own good of course!), "violates" her in every way possible, makes her feel like shit so he can send away a possible suitor. And not once she has a reaction. Oh yes she lashes once or twice (and get punished...). But she does absolutely nothing real, because of course she is sex-driven. (And when she does the author conveniently intervenes.) Give her his dick and she stops thinking...WTF?
(Readers who have read Beyond Shame may understand why I talk of "violation". Ms Rogers never once made me feel the heroine humiliated or forced in a sexual or non sexual situation.)
This is not the kind of portrait of a woman I want to see. This isn't a person I can respect. And honestly I wouldn't want her to teach my niece and not because of kinks. I want a role model, a woman sure of her self and her abilities. A woman able to stand on her own. And the school meeting at the end is simply unbelievable, given what she has or hasn't done before. We should believe that a woman who hasn't stood up in her private life, now does it in public. Oh, well yes, she does. With blackmail. "Give me my place back or my lover will take your jobs away". Sorry guys this is not a woman standing up to her self.
Sorry, Ms Begley, your book and I are going separate ways. And I'm absolutely happy of it.
To the other readers I can only say: please check the 5 stars reviews and see if you're hooked. The fact I got such a strong reaction does say something too :D
"When she had thought he was faithful to her for those two years, he had fucked anything that crossed his path"
What a guy!
And on top of all that, they have to put up with the fact that the whores in the club have the dates of when their men screwed them tattooed on their bodies and even though these fuckwits know that it hurts their women, they DO NOT GIVE A SHIT about their feelings. They just expect them to put up with it and accept.
This author certainly knows how to write fantasy filfth/garbabe, she excel at it. NO WOMAN WOULD TAKE THIS SHIT FROM THESE LOSERS!
I'm really sorry, I tried to like this book, it is just hard, when it repeatedly includes scenes that are supposed to be hot, but only leave me with the awkward feeling that the heroine has been violated and disrespected (mostly by the hero, but also by all the others who don't take her pleas for help seriously). I am a little shocked how many women think that this book is hot... There are really good books out there if sharing and multiple partners are your thing, but there's a difference between experimenting and/or consensual sharing on the one hand and forcing a woman because her body reacts to your touch. Ever heard of "No means NO" ????? Seriously, when you try to define rape culture just refer to Viper's actions and the reactions of all the other members and EVEN A PRIEST AND THE SHERIFF!!! I can't, I just CAN'T!!! :-/
Read it in the hopes that we'd get a hero possessive enough to not want his heroine partaking of the club kink...
so...
I really, really don't like the club orgy/sharing/voyeur stuff... and I find the hero's coercive behaviour (and the subtle threat of my way or the highway) to get the heroine involved really creepy.
The guys still having this deep seeded need and desire to 1) still REGULARLY watch other women have sex - other women that they've previously had sex with themselves and women who are the women the other guys are in love with (ewww - watching that is just creepy), and 2) having other men watch the women they supposedly love have sex with them and even join in sometimes, even after falling in love with and committing to these heroines, was a HUGE, ENORMOUS slap in the face of those heroines - it's basically saying "YOU'RE NOT ENOUGH for me". Plus it doesn't have perhaps the "safety" of porn - knowing the heroes are watching it with the impersonality, the distance and disconnect of seeing strangers do it on video - it's live and right in their faces and very very personal, specially when for the heroines it's women they know their "heroes" have previously been with - and who still want to be with their men (and it's other new women who if not for the heroines being there, the "heroes" would be hoping to be doing more with than just watching)... so it's also an added continual reminder of that shoved in their faces. And it's also men watching them, sometimes more than just watching, probably hoping for more, stuff most of them don't really want but the men they love want it and that love is being taken advantage of and they're coerced into giving in to it... Which all makes it really creepy and sad and hurtful and inconsiderate and selfish.
(as per book 1).
My reviews of Shade's Fall and Lucky's Choice are more detailed opinions on this series.
this book is just...wrong. In sooo many ways that I dont even know how to elaborate. I can't belive that anyone would find mane characters sexy or for that matter anything sexy in this book. I would have to have a lobotomy if I kept reading it. Just blah..
Doormat heroines, actually really stupid heroines..and I would even get passed it if the sex scenes weren't totally lousy too..I'm into kinky sex, Im not some prude..but these women and this club is ridicilous, and not kinky, just weird and totally illogical.
Best example is when Winter has a tantrum and say "I dont belive that Beth slept with 8 guys to be part of this club"..or something like that..and Beth overhear this..and she pales !?!? and then everyone is angry at Winter???
I wish someone could explain why are they angry and why is Beth paling? Did she or did she not sleep with 8 guys to get in a club? Isnt that their rule? (what a stupid rule btw LOL) WTF?? I dont understand this author, but seriously. Why are they mad or embaressed?? what kind of shit is this book?
After that scene,I DNF wishing I never read 1 word in it.
Terrible. I didn't finish it. I did not realize the hero's lifestyle was to share his woman with his biker brothers. I didn't like their "parties" and I especially didn't like how he lied to her for 2 years.
He was busy getting laid while the woman he supposedly loved was getting almost beaten to death in a parking lot.
Absolute crap, run away as quickly as you can. Illogical and rapey are the biggest sins. I'll stop now before I get really mean, even if it were free the damage it does to your brain would make it a bad deal.
DNF @ 34%. I couldn't, I just could not. And when I'm studying and in the mood for cotton candy, that's really saying a lot. I even finished Reaper's Property last week and enjoyed it - which is saying a lot considering I had already given up on that twice before due to ridiculousness.
I was skeptical so I started with the second book so I'm sure I missed some of the plot of the other characters, but - BUT - Giant enormous BUT - I really could not get on board with anything Viper and Winter do. Nothing.
He doesn't like her. Like really not, even after she finds out who he really is he's not attracted to her. Oh wait, now he's insanely attracted to her. Wait, what?? I'm getting whiplash here.
She hates him, he fingers her and makes her come, she hates hime some more and then sleeps naked next to her. Wait, what??
Yikes, that was bad. I actually just checking on further in the book to give it another chance but no, uh-uh.
Also - her injuries, sometimes she's fine, sometimes she's not. If you can explain to me how someone who needs a wheelchair and can't walk more than a few steps can maneuver out of bed from lying next to someone without waking them, I would like to hear it. Really, tell me?? How??
This was worse than any kind of insta-love - there was none!! I am more than a third in, at least one sex scene down and they are living together, and I cannot for the love of me explain to you what is happening inside either of their thick heads.
Okay, I admit I gave the first book in this series one star. The only reason I gave this one a shot was because I was looking for an audio book and the synopsis made Winter sound like she had more backbone than Beth did in "Razer's Ride". Not the case! This one was even worse, if possible. Winter is badly beaten and has to have rehab to get better. She wants to go home and have someone stay there and help her but Viper decides otherwise. He tells her friend Beth to bring her to the clubhouse instead, which she does against Winter's wishes. When Winter gets there she tells Viper she wants to go home and he tells her she isn't able to take care of herself so she has to stay. If I had been Winter I would have said "I'm going home, either take me now or I call 911!" but instead Winter just argued with Viper, trying to make him agree to letting her go. Viper was constantly overriding Winter's wishes and decisions and everyone in the clubhouse supported him. I was rolling my eyes so much I kept giving myself a headache! Every time another situation would come up I would think "finally, maybe now Winter will stand up for herself" but she never did. This is definitely my last ride with this motorcycle club - my head can't take anymore!!!
Gotta admit, this book - I didn't like it. But like I often find with the books I read I just had to know the ending. So, I skipped large pieces of it and "read" the book till the end. However, I just couldn't get into it.
I like MC books - like a lot; that one though it was unfortunately not worth the time spent reading it. I don't know if it was the wonky story, the characters I just couldn't seem to start liking - at all - or the writing style but this book just didn't do it for me.
Okay...so book 2 wasn't any better than book 1. I mean out of all the likely suspects, the deputy almost killed her and for what? Because she kissed a biker. Really?
Also ..
“The School Board will return to a closed session and take a vote. We will notify Ms. Richards within the next forty-eight hours of our decision.” Winter sat back down in her chair.
“Is that three days?” Crazy Bitch asked
“Yes,” answered T.A.
Okay...the last time I checked 48 hours was two days.
3.5 Ohhh, I see a lot of potential in this series!
I liked this couple a lot, and I enjoyed their world! It's a pretty good MC book and can't wait to read some more, I'm pretty sure the other ones will be a bit more exciting.
Why only 3.5? It didn't bring out too many feels. It does have a lot of potential and it certainly made me curious about other books by Jamie Begley.
I have to say this book is better then the first in the sense that this female lead seemed to have a lot more pride and backbone.......until she suddenly realised she still loved him and confessed her love and then became a doormat!! Viper was such an ass come on we know the club is about sex mostly but for him to almost gloat that he was with other women all night the night something happened to Winter was just in bad taste. I did not feel love from Viper towards Winter more like guilt and seriously I would like to read more books where women do not feel so insecure about themselves the way Winter does that for me is just so off putting, I really want to read about Shade and Lily but am worried that suddenly Lilly will become a sex maniac which will lead to becoming a doormat because she can't control her hormones around Shade!! We will see if that happens no more books for me by this Author!
Weak heroines, asshole heroes, non consent masked as dominance, not enough groveling.
If this were dark erotica I could deal with the assholery (yep, I made that word up) and non consent because it isn't being paraded as love. Well, it isn't at first. But I can't deal with it in an erotic romance and see the heroine as anything other than a doormat.
Sigh. I've tried to give this series a chance but I guess it's not just my cup of tea. I'm on a roll lately, reading just about any MC themed book that catches my interest. This series has pretty decent ratings and reviews so I said why not and started reading the first book. But I ended up not finishing it, I just did not like the characters so after several pages I called it quits. I read this books's blurb and I really liked it. But in the end I got so annoyed reading this book, I also did not finish reading it.
For an MC themed book, I find this disappointing. For me, they're more like a fraternity than a motorcycle club.
Bottom point is if you want to read erotica with heroes who ride motorcycles, you would probably like this series. But if you're like me and you want to read about traditional MC books where the heroines are called old ladies and becoming a member of the club takes years of hard work, loyalty and dedication, then you might want to reconsider your expectations before reading the books in this series.
I wasn’t a big fan of the first book in this series, so I have no idea why I decided to continue on to book 2. I guess I thought I found that it had potential but I can officially say I am done with this writer and this series now. The hero was basically a manwhore who lied to the heroine and pretending to be someone else for 2 years. Then, bam, she finds out he is not this respected business man she's been seeing on and off for 2 years, but in reality the president of a motorcycle club. All the while they are together he is banging any woman he could. Ugh. He was just repulsive to me. Then, the heroine is attacked and all of a sudden he decides he wants to win her over? At this point the hero basically abducts our heroine and makes her stay at his home to recover.
Here is my main problem with this book right here. The clubhouse where he lives. The heroine is respectable woman, a school principal that goes to church on Sundays. He takes her into his home that is basically just a brothel. He expects her to stay there, in his home, where many other women live, all of whom has been sexually active with numerous times. Ummmmm no. Not only that, but the women in this house have sex with all the members. Its basically a big orgy every Friday night and they like to have sex in front of all the other occupants. The hero even defends these women on numerous occasions because the heroine doesn’t show them "respect". SPARE ME!! Super waste of time and money. I cant believe I finished this book, and wish I had not.
I have to say I'm really disappointed. This book had lots of potential but didn't live up to it, and I didn't think it was particularly well written. There were several "disconnects" in the story. I expected so much more.
Viper’s Run is the second book to The Last Riders Series; the first being Razer’s Ride. This book keeps in step with plenty of the debauchery and promiscuous sex as the first book.
Viper is the club president of The Last Riders. For 2 years he has been playing the part of respectable businessman, Loker James, to determine who killed his brother Gavin. During this time, he forged a relationship with Winter Simmons, the prim and proper high school principal, to integrate himself into the community. Poor Winter was under the impression they were dating and soon finds out that she was only being used.
The hilarious bar scene with the Biker Bitches from Razer’s Ride crosses over into this book and it’s where Winter learns the truth about Loker James. So far in both books I’ve read, the Biker Bitches are strategically used to incorporate humor into the story…and it’s working. Their nutty personalities are hysterical.
Hurt and humiliated, Winter breaks all ties with Loker James. Shot down by his attempts to explain his actions and realizing that there is no chance of ever obtaining Winter’s trust again, Viper immerses himself back into the lifestyle of The Last Riders and tries to forget her. But after Winter is attacked and severely beaten, Viper uses this to his advantage and arranges to trick Winter to recuperate at his club house. With no other choice provided, Winter is forced to stay.
Initially, Winter comes across strong and stands up to Viper but that quickly fades with Viper’s dominant personality. While they do fall in love, Viper always manages to have the upper hand in their relationship. He promises not to cheat but makes it clear that he likes to play and watch and not about to change. He comes across as an unapologetic asshole; controlling and manipulating Winter into accepting his lifestyle. If she feels uncomfortable and ashamed about something, he pressures her to liking it without giving her a choice. The scene with Knox was hot, but he really gave her no choice and coerced her into liking it.
Overall, while the watching and sharing of multiple partners is high on my ick factor, the series is sucking me in and I’m looking forward to reading on.
I have a sick fascination with Jamie Begley’s Last Riders and have been wasting my time reading and doing some re-reading. Some of them, male and female characters both, make me want to reach through the pages, and wring their necks. VR not so much.
I enjoyed Winter so much. She’s so much smarter than some of the other heroines who simply roll over and say, Yes, Sir, may I take another. Rachel? Willa? Although in Lucky's Choice Willa does redeem herself by her epic hissy fit that scares the whole LR chapter into straightening up including yelling at Bliss, throwing boots and ultimately getting Bliss kicked out.
Back to Winter. She’s not that sweet, not some cuddlesome curvy sex goddess that all men lust after unbeknownst to her. She’s an ornery woman that has been dealt a bad hand (been brutally beaten) and now has to deal with all that pain plus deal with the fact that the fathead lug she fell for friend-zoned her, lied, used her and deceived her while trying to find out about his brother’s death all while sleeping with a multitude of women. Winter and Viper had not sex during this time which is one of the more confusing parts of this considering how hard he woos her. Okay, "woos" is a stretch.
Essentially she’s trapped at the MC HQ’s and is not happy about it. In turn, she’s a little bitchy, conniving, and hurts poor little Viper’s heart by friend-zoning him as she protects herself. She’s savvy enough to manipulate a hungover Shade into handing over a marker so she doesn’t have to go the route of sleeping with him.
All in all an enjoyable trip. If you like the dynamics of the characters in the other books and a smart female character who doesn’t roll over because the big bad biker’s might manliness is now ready for her, give it a try.
Huge stars taken away for not developing the plot point of why he deceived her for two years and how that played out. Maybe it was in Razer's Ride
I shouldn't have been surprised by my reaction to this story, since I'd also read the first book.
Aside from those things I didn't care for, the story itself is just... unbelievable? Improbable? Fluffy? I'm not sure. Usually I can overlook a lot if the bones of the story are solid, but the fact that the story was just "meh" & the other factors I didn't like between the H and h, it was all just too much. If I have to read "I am going now." one more time, instead of "I'm going now.", I AM GOING TO SCREAM. (see what I did there?)
I was hoping Jamie Begley would realize her first book came across as Non-Con and the hero as a sexual predator.
Sad to say, no.
If Jamie Begley wants to write books about characters that enjoy multi-partner sex, she should read books written by authors who handle it in ways that make readers feel like everyone respects the thoughts, feelings, and boundaries of the people they’re having sex with. Some authors that do this well are Selena Kitt, Samantha Kane, Emma Holly, and Em Petrova.
The author needs to learn contractions and hire an editor. It was really hard for me to get past the grammar mistakes. The premise of the story was pretty good, but Viper is an ass, and some of the situations seem unnecessary.
I've read the previous book in this series as well, and, as with that book, this book suffers from a HUGE amount of grammatical errors, typos, incorrect use of words, etc. The author even mixes up the names of two of the main characters, for goddess's sake, right in the middle of the book! One of the things that drove me to distraction is that she uses the word 'conscious' to mean 'conscience'! I could ignore that if it happened once (well, not really. It's confusing!), but all the time? The story had merit, and this could have been a really good read, if JB had a good editor and a publishing company that gave a hoot about the product. The characters are OK, and if they stopped screwing around (literally) for half a day, they might even be lovable 'cause we'd get to 'know' them.
As far as I could tell, this MC exists strictly for the members to get laid. Don't get me wrong, I like a good sex scene the same as anyone else, but I need a good story as well, to keep it interesting.
I shouldn't have bought the 3rd book in the series, but I did, and now I have to read that, too. I won't be reading any more of her work.
I'm really surprised. I thought the sequel would be about Shade and Lily.
After reading the book:
3.5 Stars
Even though this was not Shade and Lily's story; their scenes were still my favorite. I feel like the author is building up to their story, which I appreciate, but I kind of need that story NOW.
Viper's Run is good; in some ways it is better than Razor's Ride. Viper's POV helped to humanize his character. We saw his internal struggles as he tried to win Winter over and deal with his own guilt; something that was missing in Rider's Run.
Unfortunately, I found Winter boring and highly annoying, especially in regard to her interactions with the other club members. Throughout the book, Winter is often giving advice and resolving issues (thank god she was there to teach the boys how best to cook a frozen pizza). Winter comes across as a know it all. It's hard to understand Viper's interest.
In regard to Shade and Lily, .
Overall, it is a fun series. I'm excited to see whose story is next!
