My first read of the year!!! I picked it up before going to sleep on the first night of the year, and it was a good start!!!
First of all, this is a really good adaptation!!! This is something I've missed with some of the latest graphic novel adaptations I read, this one has such a good balance with text, it relies mostly on dialogue, with some other small bits of text, exploring Dorian's mind and some weirder concepts.
Secondly, the book also restructures the story, making it shorter and more compact, picking up all the important bits - from the author's note you learn that he followed the earliest versions of the original, before it was edited into book form. You get an introduction from Dorian himself, and then you meet all the important characters and pulls you into this story!!
Now thirdly, I have to go into the art... which wasn't my favorite style - it's a bit too dark (and too cloudy if that makes sense...) - and I'll admit it does fit with the darkness of the story itself, it just isn't my favorite thing. Now, on the other hand, I absolutely love using the art on the chapter pages to see the portrait itself and the wasting and corruption of it all!!! It adds so much!!!
This was an excellent book!!! It just wasn't for me, but even then it's a very high 3 stars!!! It's one of the best graphic novel adaptations I've read, and I'll be recommending it, I'll just suggest you take a look at the art first!! :D
