This was my first neuroscience book, and is great for that purpose! It's strategy is to give a series of "case study"-type stories in neuroscience which are well established, with the purpose of demonstrating concepts which are useful in thinking about neuroscience more generally. On the other hand: it is not very well cited, you are mostly on your own for further reading. But as I said, the content is mostly restricted to the very-well-established
