When the body of a young woman is discovered in a field near Reading, it is linked to a similar discovery five years earlier. Both women had lived in or near Bristol, both had boarded a train at Temple Meads bound for London, but never reached their destination, and both were found murdered within a few miles of each other. The cold case review team in Bristol, headed by DCI John Meredith, takes on the case.
With few leads to go on, and the passage of time, it was always going to be a tough case to solve. But with the team shorthanded, and Meredith’s personal life in freefall, the team questions if Meredith will be around to see the case through, and if their department can survive.

Having worked in the property industry for most of her adult life, latterly at a senior level for a corporate agency, Marcia finally escaped in 2010. Whilst she still works as a consultant for several independent agencies, she can now dedicate the bulk of her time to writing and of course reading.
Misplaced Loyalty was her debut novel in published format, and introduced the popular Meredith & Hodge Crime series. In 2017 Marcia published Witness for Wendy the first in the Bearing Witness series. She has also written several stand alone novels.
Marcia is married with two children and lives in Bristol UK. Marcia can be contacted at www.mkturnerbooks.co.uk
This is the newest installment of the Meredith and Hodge series. It's the first I've read so I was a little worried that I'd be missing the backstory and would feel a little lost with the story. Fortunately this is a great standalone story and I didn't feel like I was missing too much that connected to the current case that Meredith was working on.
I do feel it'd be good to go back and read to get more of the backstory around Patsy in particular. I don't feel like I truly picked up enough to like her as a character which may be a little unfair and I might change my mind if I knew more about her. I think her actions just frustrated me and I felt it was a little irrational.
However, the ending did seem encouraging and hopefully the next installment will pull things back together nicely.
The case in this was interesting and the switch between the investigation Vs the Brandon family kept us updated throughout. Things aren't quite what they seem to begin with and it is suspenseful
MK Turner has once again created an adventure that has it's twists, turns, humor and angst. Lee Beddow brings all of the Meredith and Hodge characters to life with great talent and compassion. Having listened to the 15 previous books in this series...I will say this is probably the most emotionally charged one thus far. I was on a emotional roller coaster that I wanted off of and yet couldn't not ride through to the end. And once I disembarked I was shaking my head and excited for book 17 to see where this journey goes next. I did not see the angst coming in this book and thought 3 or 4 times I had the entire thing figured out....so not true. MK Turner does an incredible job of writing a book that keeps me engaged and on the verge of total absorption without regard for other responsibilities. I have to be grateful that her books are not 24 hours long in narration length or I would have a serious issue with daily responsibilities. I am going to suggest that if you are new to Meredith and Hodge do not start here. This book is one that I would not consider a stand alone. I enjoyed all the feelings this book allowed me to share even a few tears which is so not a common occurrence when I am reading. Thanks to MK Turner and Lee Beddow for an outstanding listen that Gone was for me.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Many thanks to Marcia for allowing me to be part of your Arc team once again it’s always a pleasure. I just love this series of books so much. The characters are realistic and so likeable and as this is book 16 it’s like welcoming friends back into your life. The story is original and the twists were interesting, it’s like being part of the team solving this cold case the writing is so good, there are no dull moments and the pace is perfect. We have the added bonus of being part of Meredith and Hodge relationship which has taken a turn this time around,(sorry no spoilers). Loved the interaction between Meredith and Jared there’s a little bromance building there it’ll be interesting to see if it continues in later books which I hope there will be more of. I’ve enjoyed all the books in this series but this is my favourite so far. The ending as always has left me wanting more. Can’t wait first the next book. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this and every other book written by M K Turner not only this series but her others as well. #gone #bookreader #bookreaderscommunity #bookreadersofinstagram #readingcommunityofinstagram #bookloversofinstagram #bookbloggersofinstagram #bookblogging
Another excellent story involving Meredith and his team. Particularly interesting to see how Linda and Patsy cope with their horrific injuries. And we get a good insight into Meredith's character. Highly recommended, looking forward to the next one. Julian Tremayne, Pocklington, East Yorkshire

This is the 17th book in the Meredith & Hodge novel (late to the party again!) but apart from an obvious incident that is mentioned that has happened in a previous title, this story works as a standalone.
The writing is superb, I especially liked the way the book is divided into differing timelines, bringing the past in line with the future, the case being delved into whilst also having the personal relationship of the main characters discussed as well. The characters are obviously well established and loved by the reader, I found what happens to them in this book emotional, without having been on the journey up to this point, a testament to the author’s ability to connect with their audience.
This is a hard hitting book, the case being one that leads in many different directions but ultimately this title focuses primarily on the two main characters relationship, the developments within possibly diverting from the ‘crime’ itself. Whilst in itself this is an interesting approach and furthers character development, the pace did feel like it slowed a little because of this.
A really interesting read, and what an ending, a cliffhanger that definitely leaves you wanting to know so much more about what happens next!
Yet another great book in this series, it follows on from the drama of 'Enough' seeing both patsy and loopie dealing with their own demons after their ordeal with a murderer that has left them both with PTSD, and their respective partners trying to help whilst coping with a new cold case, never ending twists and turns makes this a 5🌟 read
I think this is now my favourite M & H book to write despite the storyline. As I reached the key points in the story I was still hesitant asking my self should I and would he, etcetera. I think it worked.
DCI John Meredith and his cold case team catch the cold case of two women who disappeared in similar circumstances and found murdered within a few miles of each other. It’s a difficult case to solve anyway, but he’s down two team members -- his wife and police officer, Patsy Hodge, is on extended leave, recovering from an attack by a serial killer who was killed by another team member. Patsy might look and sound like herself on the outside, but Meredith knows something isn’t right on the inside and is powerless to fix it, whatever it is. She’s his moral center and reason for being and without her contributions at work, and her emotional unavailability at home, he’s floundering both personally and professionally.
This was a hard book for me to read. I am so attached to these characters, I gave some thought to DNF’ing, because the plot caused me so much angst. Meredith is one of my two favorite book boyfriends and seeing him and Patsy in such peril is hard to swallow. My loyalty to these characters won out, however, and the storyline was so compelling, I just had to know how it all came out. And, it was interesting to see Meredith, who is generally extremely competent, continue to do his job and not spin off into a thousand pieces.
The story is told in a “then” and “now” format, which usually annoys me, but the author is skilled in making the story flow between the two time periods. I thought I had figured out who the bad actor was, but I wasn’t even close. No spoilers, but Meredith does something uncharacteristic at the end which filled me with great hope for the next book.
I find these books are most satisfying read in order, but you could read them out of order as the author does a good job of filling in the backstory. I love this series because of the storytelling, compelling characters, snappy dialogue and the realness of the situations. In the end, another five-star read for me, and I hope there will be more to come.
Although I have read, and enjoyed other books by Marcia, namely the J J Jenson series , this is the first of the Meredith & Hodge series that I have had the privilege to review and it won’t be the last. Gone is the seventeenth book in the series and it is incredibly emotive and heart rending on so many different levels. If you have read the previous books , which I haven’t, you will already have the scene set for some aspects of the story line linked to Meredith’s personal life. Though it does work as a standalone I do feel that it would have been better having read at least the last one and I will be looking to probably start at the beginning of the series and build up my knowledge of the characters as it is so good. Gone is one of those books that , subject wise, is at times hard to read, whilst keeping you absolutely gripped from start to finish. Everything stands still and nothing else matters whilst you have this book in hand and , at just over two hundred and fifty pages, it can be read, as I did, in just one sitting. There is so much going on in the book , because of the nature of the storyline, that I found I just needed to take a few minutes every now and then, to focus on an individual and what they had been, or were going, through before I moved on. The ending will also have you waiting in anticipation for the next book in the series and I hope it is not too long before Marcia enlightens us. I am so pleased I have found another good detective series to read.
I found this a hard book to review, much as I found it emotionally hard to listen to. On the one hand it’s very well written and takes the reader/listener into the story so well that you feel like you are there with the CCRT team throughout their investigations and their personal lives. It's also expertly narrated and easy to listen to. On the other hand, being a big softie, I found it emotionally draining listening to my favourite characters having a hard time in their private lives. Having listened to every book in the series the characters actually feel like family, which is quite an achievement for any writer to manage but one which this author did with ease. That does mean though, that for me, when Meredith and co have a bad time it almost hurts like it would if a family member were going through it. Like I said, I’m a big softie. Anyway, I had to stop part way through and listen to something else as I found the story a little upsetting, not something that happens to me often when reading fiction but a testament to how real the characters are portrayed and how important they have become to me. Because of this though I didn’t enjoy the story as much as previous ones due to the sad storyline.
I hope the next book repairs the fractures introduced in this one but that remains to be seen.
This is a must read for all Meredith and Hodge fans. Meredith is in trouble and, for once, it's not his fault! Without giving away any spoilers, I can only say that there is "trouble in paradise". It has one of those endings where you really really want to know what is going to happen next. Not forgetting that, along the way, the Cold Case team are investigating a double murder. Roll on the next installment!
I’ve just finished 'Gone' and I have to say, for me, it's the best Meredith and Hodge yet! After Patsy is nearly killed in the previous book, this one takes us through the additional torment of Patsy and Meredith so well that I felt my heart breaking for them both. I felt like I was living the drama with both of them and feeling their pain. I believe the author put her heart and soul into this book and it showed. Fantastic and one you must read!
Book 17 of the Meredith and Hodge detective series and a strange one really as it concentrates heavily on the relationship between, and the lives of, the two main protagonists. Patsy Hodge is still suffering severe PTSD following the events from the previous book; is off work and seemingly not interested in anything. DCI John Meredith doesn’t know what to do but eventually convinces her to approach a therapist. It’s a well written book and makes for a compelling read.
Briefly, meanwhile the cold case team are reviewing a case where two girls separately caught a train from Bristol but then disappeared and their bodies were found in fields near Reading, many years later and five years apart. With little to go on they have to start their investigation from scratch. But Meredith’s personal life is a mess and he is unable to concentrate on the case. Is this the end of his role as a detective?
Whilst the cold case is relatively simple the whole theme of this book revolves around the two detectives almost to the the exclusion of the usual thriller. Shocking in its portrayal of the consequences of what detectives actually face in the real world this is such an absorbing read. Not what I expected, but it was a very interesting and enjoyable read
What can I say without giving anything away? I am a huge fan of this author and Meredith in particular and loved this book as it’s made me love him more! This book covered old friends and family, new friends and all the usual regular team along with a really gripping case for them to work on. For the first time, I correctly worked out who the killer is. The only negative I can find is that I have to wait for the next one - I need to know what happens next!
Marcia Turner has Gone and done it again, with this the 16th Meredith and Hodge. Continuing with the aftermath of book 15, but both are easily read as stand alone novels.
A really excellent read, both with the procedural side with the cold case of two women’s bodies being discovered and the domestic side of the lives of Meredith and Hodge, which I found to be a little sad at times.
