This was such a fun read, and very well-written for the age group and genre. Katy Birchall captured the vibe of being a young, wealthy socialite in London so perfectly... the parties, the expensive boarding school, a trip to the Amalfi Coast. I'd honestly recommend this book to any young person who wants to get into reading.

The book follows Ruby, whose mother grew up one of London's wealthiest darlings, and moved to the country to raise her daughter. When she dies, Ruby is sent to live with her rich aunt, Tabatha, and to attend London's most prestigious boarding school... alongside the heir to the throne, Caroline. There, determined to work out the identity of her father, she infiltrates the so-called Elites in order to find out the truth... but doesn't expect to fall in love with one of them, too.

Being older, I did guess a few of the twists, but I don't think this took away from the experience of reading at all. Witty and sweet, I loved this book, and I really think it would make a great film - it has that early 2000s romcom vibe, which was fab! Really recommend, and can't thank the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC enough.

Major 00's rom com feels. Once I got into this I couldn't escape, it was so good. It had all those iconic cliche moments from movies that I miss so much, but the conversations and banter was so much better and funny.

I mean maybe its similar to other plots of the same genre but idc, I ate this up. Loved the drama, the scandals, the romance that had me blushing like mad. Felt like a teenager watching all the chic flicks all over again. Plus I adore the royalty trope every damn time. Loved it 🤭

I should begin by saying that I'm not sure I belong to the intended audience for this book, so maybe some of the aspects I liked less are not really a problem of the book, but mine.
It tells the story of a teenage girl (on the verge of her 18th birthday) who, after her mother's death, moves with her aunt (an earl's daughter) and enrols in an elite public school. From that moment on, besides fitting in a world and a school which are eons away from her previous life, she sets on finding who her father is (her mum never disclosed this information).

So, there are teenagers, a school... very much YA. But there's also mention of sex, drugs, alcohol... so I don't know if this is really a YA story or just a romance with very young characters.

In fact , the whole book had me a bit confused, because it seemed to be too many things at once, as if the author couldn't decide. The characters are teenagers but simultaneously they aren't at all like normal teenagers, they behave, talk, dress, etc as if they were at least 10 years older. Part of the story takes place at school and, hence, tries to capture the school environment and dynamics (quite common in YA novels), but another part takes place in very posh houses, restaurants, clubs... so it tries to capture the social dynamics of the social elites, including their exposure to the media. There are very superficial parts, centred on appearances, fashion... something one would expect from a light chick lit novel, but at the same time it tackles very serious issues, like death of a parent, true friendship, living up to expectations while finding your own way in life, accepting your sexuality... which would fit in an emotional novel with more angst. And yes, life is complex and multifaceted, but in a book this complexity needs to be combined in such a way that everything blends smoothly without major contradictions, in a coherent whole. My impression is that the author didn't quite achieve this smooth blend. Besides, juggling so many different aspects and subplots, the author left one of the storylines (the one regarding Ollie) unfinished (a "we'll talk later" turns into "as far as the reader is concerned, we never got to talk and he/she's left in the dark").

On the positive side, the writing is well-paced and the romance is decent, with a couple of good scenes with chemistry.

So, overall, a decent read, but not too thrilling for my old self.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for granting my request to read this e-ARC and provide my honest opinions.

Honestly, I feel like this book's plot is way too similar to the last book I read, and it feels so weird. I desperately wanted to like this story, but there were a few things that stood out way too much for me.Ruby just lost her mom, so she has to stay with a guardian who is Lady Tabatha, her aunt. The fact that Ruby has lived a secluded life throughout her life made it seem as if she would be unable to blend with the "society life," and Tabatha herself. Consider me surprised when the time came for her to fake who she is; she jumped into it wholeheartedly.

So this is one of those kinds of books in which the lower class decides to mingle with the upper-class people but has a lower-class friend to help with their plan of infiltrating the "upper-class people," and the worst part—they always have a good reason for faking who they are. 😐.

I felt like this book was divided into two parts: one of her trying to infiltrate the Elites to "get to know them" and find who her father is and the fake dating part with Xavier, which I thought was so unnecessary, by the way. And what she did to Oliver was so not nice, and please What did Ollie want to say? Did I miss a page or two? 🗣🗣🙀

Sure, there were some good parts, but it was not enough to pull the story together.

Thank you once again for the e-ARC.

I love Katy Birchall’s romance novels, they are hilarious and immersive and I am always looking forward to reading the next one, so I was really excited to get into her YA novels.

Hot Young Royals is set in the world of royalty and aristocracy with its exclusive schools and parties, villas in Italy, masquerade balls, intrigue, and secrets. The protagonist, seventeen-year-old Ruby Carter, knows nothing about this world, having grown up in the English countryside with only her mother, not having anything to do with her aristocratic side of the family, until her mother dies and she goes to live with her aunt Tabatha in Central London. Determined to find out the truth about the identity of her father and her mother’s past, Ruby infiltrates the Elite, the group of nobility at Clairmont Hall, which includes not only the future Queen of England, but also a broody and handsome duke. As Ruby slightly lies her way into the group, she will have to figure out the lengths to which she will go to discover the truth and if she is ready to face the consequences.

Hot Young Royal was such a fun and intriguing read. My favourite character was the outspoken and brazen Lady Tabatha, who managed to make me laugh out loud even in the most serious moments. I also liked the character of Ruby, who I found a strong and authentic (but also flawed) character, and his romantic interest, Xavier, is just adorable and I enjoyed how both their stories (on their own and together) develop.

Hot Young Royal is a witty and entertaining read, well-written and with a wonderful cast of characters, and I am keeping my fingers crossed for a sequel!

Thank you to NetGalley and Scholastic UK for this eArc in exchange for my honest review!

Hot Young Royals follows Ruby Carter as she navigates life after her mums death where her world is entirely transformed from a quiet country life to a busy aristocratic London scene. In an attempt to investigate who her father is, Ruby must get close to the Princess and her group of friends known as the Elites.

This book was like Mean Girls meets royalty! It contained so many of my favourite tropes and was so addictive to read. The beginning was particularly compelling. I loved meeting all the characters, each interesting with their different personalities and faults that made them feel very realistic. It was easy to follow along and get to know and understand each of them. I liked that these characters made mistakes and weren’t excused and that they owned up to them. It was easy to feel sympathy for all of the characters in their individual situations despite their actions because they were all self aware of what they did wrong while they were hurting and apologised.

I did, however, find the ending a little rushed and left us with several loose ends. I’m hopeful for a sequel to clear these up because I would love to be thrown back into this world with these characters to find out how everything plays out next.

Hot Young Royals comes out May 8th!

This was such a fun YA read, totally written with its audience in mind and absolutely nailed the vibe! Think Wild Child meets royalty and high-society drama. I was hooked. The family scandals, the characters, the chaos, the plot twists, it was fast-paced, juicy, and completely addictive. Honestly, I couldn’t put it down. Fingers crossed for a sequel!

Following Ruby’s journey as she digs into the mystery of her father’s identity, accidentally falls in love, and tries to survive life in the spotlight, plus a school full of Elites, was such a fun ride. Even though I guessed a few of the twists, the story still hit all the right notes, it felt like watching a nostalgic teen movie, and I was so here for it.

Big thanks to Scholastic for sending me a copy!

for work

Alright, I have read / seen a million stories like this one. Of course, it was predictable. But nevertheless nicely executed and well written for the target audience. If you’re looking for a quick read to turn your brain off and enter a world of royalty, glamour, drama, and romance, this is the place. You really get what you expect.

Cute. This has such 2000s rom com vibes. It's something I would've absolutely loved when I was younger, but I still enjoyed it now! I recommend if you want Mean Girls but with royalty and a bit of mystery.
