There is a dark part of me that wants to consume nothing but Japanese high school comedies. Supernatural or high-concept makes it even more irresistible. Seen from a position of good taste, these books are garbage, but I am willing to acknowledge that I neither read nor review books to look sophisticated.

So here we are, 10 volumes into this zany harem comedy centered in theory around a true love locket and two rival gangs kept from fighting by having their offspring date. Neither is really addressed in this volume, and I don't really mind.

The characters are just too darn likable. If there's one thing I appreciate about popular Japanese protagonists in these stories, it's that they're often neither the smartest guy in the room who's also an asshole, nor are they some mega-talented person who is still somehow an underdog. Raku only really has two things going for him: He's super nice, and he can cook well. Having the protagonist be good at a few things and mediocre at most else actually makes it seem more grounded and interesting.

This volume also features the staple of manga comedies, the bit where the protagonist sees one or more of the girls naked and freaks out about it. In this case, it's at a bath house, as most manga publishers must have a stipulation about the appearance of a bath house. The protagonist has to freak out, because if he was cool with it, we would have a completely different sort of manga on our hands.

In spite of myself, I was amused by the amnesia chapters. It's a tired trope already worn out when the Flintstones did it, but in this case it helps highlight the absurdity of Raku's situation at this point. Long running comedy manga often stack characters like firewood over time, so it's fun to take a step back and realize that he's got a half dozen women with a crush on him at this point. At this point, I think it might behoove the creator to add at least one other guy to the mix.

Hilariously, I think this series still might fail the Bechdel test.

This volume should win a prize for harem-manga trope overkill. We've got the bath house episode, one that involves swimming so there's lots of bikini's and then we ended up in amnesia. Good heavens, between fan service and soap opera plots it's a wonder this story moves forward at all.

But regardless, it's still a lot of fun to read. There IS a sort of character development moving things along. And while the story could be better/more logical/whatever it's still a nice way to pass a little time. So I'll give it 4 stars for still being fun. And for making me want to know what happens next.

Interesting insight into Shu. Poor guy, with the unrequited love and all. Raku won Haru over a bit more, and he got his pendant back, which is good. Also, he now has

So, Raku has to help at a bath house, Shu has a crush, Kosaki gets sick, a pool gets cleaned, we get to see Paula a bit annd Raku gets amnesia. A typical rom com volume really, though this one is pretty heavy on the side characters and giving them some much needed fleshing out. Art is pretty cute as usual.

Of course, there are a lot of comedic, light-hearted moments here. The group goes to a bath house accidentally together, then they come together to clean the school pool. But there are also a bit of serious developments happening.

Surprisingly, the biggest plotline goes to Shu. We find out he has a crush on their teacher, who’s marrying and leaving the school. This really shows the friendship between Shu and Raku. Shu tends to hide how he really feels by joking around, while butting into Raku’s life. But Raku can tell when something’s bothering him, and he’s there to push him, and again when he’s upset. I was a little surprised by how little Ruri had to do with this plot, actually.

Then Raku gets amnesia. This is both hilarious, because everyone freaks out and he’s so innocently sweet with no memory, and potentially plot changing, depending on what memories he gets back. I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes (even if I suspect it’ll be anticlimactic).

This series is always fun, and I look forward to the next one.

Another fun time in the ever challenging life of Yakuza kids in love. If you are already at this point in the series be sure to read this volume to so you can see how each character reacts to the ever changing plot as False Love finds a way into everyone's heart more honestly. :)

Raku helps out in the public baths after going there to relax himself. However the wheels of fate for young Rku seem to drag many of the girls in his life to the same baths at the same time. Hilarity ensues.

Ms. Kyoko needs help to clean the school pool and luckily for her Raku was late after school (he takes care of the animals after all) so she knew she could count on him and his friends (I suppose the guys from the hangout might have wanted to help but this isn't that kind of manga so...) With everyone invited to the pool cleaning event they even have some food and get free use of the pool as thanks for their hard work and less then close friends have a chance to get closer.

Meanwhile Shu has been acting strangely after hearing about Ms. Kyoko's engagement with plans to leave the school and Raku has to put the clues together to find the truth from his elusive friend so he can understand the best way to support whatever decision he makes. Even if he needs to ask Tsugumi for advice.

The Onodera shop is closed and Raku came over to help Kosaki to feel better. After all she has been kind enough to help him in the past and he actually cares about her. However with Haru close at hand his help will be be put to the test although now Haru can get a chance to see how serious and nice Raku can be (I hope this doesn't mean she becomes another love interest because her rivalry over her sister is funny.)

Finally Chitoge's birthday is coming up again marking the anniversary of when she and Raku started to pretend to be in love at a little over a year. She wants him to remember it but that is the least of her or any of their friends issues when a fly ball almost hits her and Raku pushes her out of the way so it hit him in the head instead. Now Nisekoi has become an amnesia manga and the crew has to help him try to remember again before things go from bad to worse.

My favorite part of the book is definitely the sick Onodera chapter of the book with the interactions between Haru and Raku like when he bribes her with sweets and how she gloats so honestly when she feeds Kosaki porridge in front of Raku. :)

As filler-y as some of these chapters are, they're fun and I have fond memories of their subsequent episodes in the anime. The reveal of Shu's crush was always one of my favourites, it really adds some emotional depth to his character. I love how we get a glimpse into just how deeply Haru cares for Kosaki, and Paula for Tsugumi. Also, the last three chapters are uncharted territory! We're out of the anime (I still can't believe we never got season 3), and of course there's an amnesia plot, but there's talk of the locket and it looks like we're finally going to discover what the picture book is all about. Haru is becoming less annoying in regards to Raku. However Chitoge is still annoying. At least she acknowledges she treats Raku like trash, but it doesn't excuse the fact she constantly physically and verbally assaults him.

This volume could have been the best yet. The dynamic between Onodera, her sister, and Raku is one of the more interesting ones in the series, and the whole subplot with Shu is good. But then the author had to go and drop the biggest, fattest soap opera trope of them all:

The first half of this volume was rough. Maybe a one star rating even. It was like they ran out of ideas.
But then in the second half they pulled out an unexpected plot twist that might actually save this series for me.

This series goes back and forth. At times it can really deliver and at others it is painful. We get the memory loss trope in this one and a bit more fan service moments. We do get some good character moments though and the side characters get a little more attention in this volume.

My least favorite volume so far. I don't like most amnesia plotlines and I'm not a fan of anything to do with student-teacher romantic relationships (even if it's one-sided like it is here). I'm still continuing with the series though as I've really enjoyed the other volumes in the series.

Nisekoi 10

Some usual stories first, then Onodera’s sickness gives her sister an opportunity to see that Ichijo is not as evil as she thinks, then he gets amnesia and we are left with a nice cliffhanger.

Veamos

I truly only skimmed this volume. This story is falling down hill, and fast. It started so strong and there was really good character development. All the relationships had a steady progression and exciting tension. Now it's just a mish-mash of one-offs that go nowhere. Sure, we get a few nice backstories here and there, but it's still not worth it anymore. So many things are overplayed and overdone. I'm sick of reading the same thing over and over for the last few volumes from Nisekoi. Count me done.

This was better than the previous volume as the gags were still there but mixed in with some actual story both for Raku and for the side characters.

Also, in a hilarious mix of comedy and plot, the final chapters actually are beginning a story that could be interesting and push the story forward. If more chapters like this would be written, Nisekoi would be a great story. Let's see if the mangaka, Naoshi Komi, continues this trend.

Another awesome volume of Nisekoi tucked away!
The series started strong and has held up to at least that standard with every installment, sometimes drifting to give more depth to other characters that I always find interesting!
Well worth the read, and a damn fine addition to the series. I don't want to wait several weeks for the next one!
