This short novella was about Jellia, Dorothy’s lady’s maid, and her magic. Glinda knew something about Jellia that even Jellia didn’t know, and tried to use that to her advantage.

I felt quite sorry for Jellia and the position she was put in, and it seemed obvious that she was getting a rough deal from both Dorothy and Glinda. I did like the surprise twists thrown in there, and the little details like Glinda only eating pink food.. It will be interesting to find out what happens in the next book.

This is Jellia's tale. Friend of Ozma, head servant for Dorothy. If you have not read Dorothy Must Die, I highly suggest reading that before this book. Spoilers ahead if you have not read the first book yet. You have been warned....

This book has me feeling really bad for Jellia, especially after what happens to her in Dorothy Must Die. Although this story dies give us greater insight into who what role she really plays in the story. It also had me wishing she played a larger role. But I feel the part she did play was more vital than we knew.

Glinda sees something special about Jellia so takes her for a short time to help in her palace. And to that I just want to say "EWW!" Apparently Glinda does not understand that there is a concept for too much pink. On the surface, Glinda just wants a maid but her intentions are much darker in how to use Jellia.

One of the servants working for Glinda shocked me. Yet also confused me on the timelines a bit. Overall an interesting side is shown of certain characters. And we get a better sample of Jellia's ability with Nail Art. I would love it if she would do my nails! Sercets are unveiled and I wonder what part might take in the main story line.

All three novellas of the 'Dorothy Must Die' Stories from Volume 1 are really good. They add so much depth the the world and the characters. I Highly recommend reading these!

In the second prequel of Dorothy Must Die, we get a little insight on Jellia, the head-maid for the first book and life in Oz after Dorothy becomes its ruler. Jellia is working on the palace under Dorothy but knows that things aren't looking good for Oz. One day Glinda appears and asks for Jellia to spend the summer working for her. But Glinda isn't looking for a maid, but someone with enough magic to start up her magic-sucking machine. In Glinda's palace Jellia will learn a few secrets about the people planning to destroy Oz and the ones fighting to save it.

The Witch Must Burn was a really fun short story. I really enjoyed learning more about Jellia and the life in the palace, getting the scoop on how life was and how life became after Dorothy for the people of Oz. Jellia was a surprisingly great character and I really hope to see more of her in the future, we also learn how she first came in contact with Nox and the Army of the Wicked. These prequels are just as fun as the actual books of the series and I am really looking forward to more, since we get a different cahracter in each of them.

Yee, I love Jellia - even though I think like liked No Place Like Oz better than this one.
I thought this was interesting but not captivating, and the story was just okay for me.

This was the second prequel in the Dorothy Must Die series. I think that I liked this a bit better than No Place Like Oz (prequel #1). I say this mainly because of Jellia. I love her! And I found Dorothy a little bit (*cough a lot a bit *cough) annoying. Since I have read Dorothy Must Die before I read this prequel, I knew about certain characters and certain outcomes, so that took away some of the surprise. If you don't mind knowing things in advance then read the prequels whenever, however if you do care, i suggest reading the prequels before you read Dorothy Must Die. I truly enjoyed this and think that it was very well written. I am looking forward to the next prequel!

HAPPY READINGS!!!!

3.5. I like the added bonus's to the story, but why can't the author just add this information into the regular books she has been writing?? I don't think I'm going to spend the time and money right now on the third novella, I'll just jump right into The Wicked Will Rise because I already own it. It just seems silly to write 3 separate 100 page books. To me it makes it seem the author isn't a good enough writer to incorporate and flow everything together.

So far the Dorothy Must Die series has not been working for me, but I still had this little novella so I wanted to give it one more shot. The Witch Must Burn adds a little bit more to some of the characters, and how they met and are connected, but ultimately it couldn't convince me to keep reading the series.

The villains are made from cardboard - or at least their plans and intentions are. There is a little hint that there might be a bit more to it, but it was too little too late for me.

Not for me.

The Witch Must Burn

So this is the best novella in this book, I love it. And…there is Nox!!!!! How can I not like it? But I also remind the moment when Amy realized Jellia and Nox had a past. Yet…actually…nothing happened between Jellia and Noz!!! Or perhaps not in this novella…so Nox looks just as great as usual to me. I know, that’s not the point. So…how can I not love this book when spoil idiot Dorothy was gone, Jellia’s back, and Nox involved? Above all…The Revolutionary Order of the Wicked!!!!! Don’t you just love them?

The Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. The only thing standing between Oz and its destruction.

All characters we love in the original series of Dorothy Must Die came back in this novella, and this is a really great novella!!!! 4 stars definitely. I love how strong Jellia was and how she managed to survive in the castle, let along when she was sent to Glinda’s Palace for some wicked operation. That part is truly creepy, those machines and magic and schemes…Glinda was truly a devil with an angle skin. Her heart was rotten and black…not even the wicked witch can win her. Oh perhaps…only evil queen. But all in all, I enjoy this novella really much, and I’d love to read more about Jellia’s secret life in the palace after she went back to Emerald Palace, for the better Oz. maybe we can have more? Please?

The Witch Must Burn is a prequel novella of Jellia who is Dorothy’s maid in the palace. She enjoys her work even if she’s no longer working for Ozma her friend but for Dorothy who’s taken over the Emerald City. It’s while at the Emerald City Glinda see’s that there is more than just a maid to Jellia and takes her off to her fortress. While at the Glinda’s pink palace she learns that Glinda’s plans for Oz is much worse than what it was like working for Dorothy. After the real reason that Glinda requested her visit is revealed, Jellia is left for dead. Saved by the rebellion she’s recruited to help in the battle against the evil duo.
I’ve read the first book so I have an idea who Jellia prior to reading The Witch Must Burn. I’ve been working my way through the Novella’s to catch up in anticipation of the 3rd book being released. While this isn’t my favorite novella so far is does showing an interesting side of what’s going on with Glinda and the Wizard. I think the author has done a great job creating a unique spin on the classic Dorothy story and I love seeing that she’s evil as well as Glinda. I also admit that I never want to try bubble gum fondue ever it just sounds nasty. I thought it was fitting that everything for Glinda is pink and the gum ball reference is how I always envisioned her coming to Dorothy in the movie. While a short novella it’s worth reading. It also has one of my favorite covers so far in the series. I wish I had a physical book with this cover.

'"That part is simple," Mombi said. "The witch is going to burn."
-- Danielle Paige, The Witch Must Burn

The Witch Must Burn is a prequel novella to Danielle Paige's Dorothy Must Die, released months after the release of the actual novel. As big of a fan I am of Paige's debut novel and couldn't stop recommending it to everyone, it was nothing but obvious I had to read this one too. I liked this addition to the series. I really do. Then why do have this feeling that this story is one I've read before, maybe even in the same series? It's because I have. People who have read Dorothy Must Die will quickly notice the undeniable similarities between these two. Unfortunately, the similarities don't stay within the story. Also some of the characters are similar to others, too. In this case, the way Glinda behaved and acted towards her servants reminded me a bit too much of Dorothy. If the shoes Dorothy wears made her act like Glinda, I don't know, but it surely looked like it. Glinda's now just the same villain as Dorothy, and I would have loved if she had been different.

Don't think I don't like the story because several resemblances. I was surprised by Jellia's point of view, but it didn't stop me from loving her background and personality. The reasons as to why Paige chose Jellia to tell the story may haven't been very clear in the beginning, but as I progressed with the book I quickly began to understand. I eventually liked her point of view so much more than Dorothy's. Despite her big mouth, she knew exactly how to play the game, and that's what I loved so much about her.

Although The Witch Must Burn came out after Dorothy Must Die, I highly recommend you read it before the novel, if you already haven't. Because now, this novella only seemed like a well written money-maker than an original story which could have been an amazing addition to this fabulous series.

I love these books and am eagerly awaiting the next full sized installment in March 2015.

This prequel follows the journey of Jellica, a maid in the Emerald Palace. Jellica has some of her own magic and attracts the attention of Glinda the no-longer-good-witch in Oz. Everyone's done a role reversal in Paige's version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Dorothy is now tyrant whose seized power from Ozma the rightful ruler. The Scarecrow has morphed into a disturbing version of Dr. Frankenstein, the Cowardly lion is a bully with an army to back him up and the Tin Woodsman is a fascist.

Through Jellica's eyes we see the beginning the resistance movement when the Wicked Witches turn out to be the good guys and the good guys turn out to be psychopaths.

I highly recommend this series.

What? A different, unexpected character's perspective. Prequels are what every other fandom wants so I'm pleased to learn about Oz before the protagonist of "Dorothy Must Die" gets there.

"The Witch Must Burn" is from Jellia's point of view. She is Dorothy's head maid who takes the fall for some of Amy's action in "Dorothy Must Die." It turns out she was part of the Order of the Wicked but not much else is known about her so it's not a character I was expecting to headline one of the prequels. However, I'm glad she did.

Apart from being Dorothy's head maid, there is something more special about Jellia that doesn't excape Glinda's or the order's attention. She has magic, like most Ozians, but it's more powerful and we don't really know why. Here we learn that she doesn't know where she came from but that she has known Ozma (Oz's rightful ruler and a fairy) for most of her life and cares for her deeply. She would do anything to break her out of the jelly-like state and ship Dorothy back off to Kansas but must play her part well in order to do.

We see her meet Nox and the rest of the order and the beginnings of their up-rise to overthrown the so called "Good Witch" and evil Dorothy. Overall, it a fun short read.

This book was so good! I honestly missed Jelia so much and was so glad to see how she got to be a part of the order! I shipped her and Nox and don’t know why I was surprised when he showed up- I screeched, ngl. I fangirled so hard. I love how this book really shows how evil Glinda is, it’s not just Dorothy. I love these short stories ahh! Such a fun and easy read, i wish this series is more popular and I wish that this short novela was longer but I guess it makes sense it’s so short lol! I honestly know nothing about the other novelas but I hope one of them is in Nox’s pov bc I love him with all my heart. It’s so sad that she kept saying things like she could die and she hopes she doesn’t die, bc I know how she ends up and it’s honestly so heartbreaking. I love this!

precuela muy cortita pero sustanciosa. fue agradable ahora conocer un poco la perspectiva desde uno de los personajes que aparecieron en el primer libro, y me refiero a Gella. todo está armándose como un rompecabezas cada vez más claro. me encantan estos libros

Lovely to have a small character from the original Wonderful Wizard of Oz (known as the Green Girl before being named as Jellia Jamb in The Marvelous Land of Oz) being fleshed out to have a pivotal role in this new story of OZ.
November 24, 2016

I was so extremely disappointed when Jellia died in the main book series. I loved her character so much I was hoping someone would save her. She was so compassionate and sweet i couldn’t deal when the lion ate her.

This short story is told from Jellias point of view and gave us a glimpse of how she became involved with the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. I always wondered that and we finally get the answer in this short story. I loved everything about it. Also, she is half fairy?!? Say whattttt. Now that I know that I kinda wish she used some of that fairy magic to save herself or something. But then again maybe she never learnt how to use it fully.

If I have to criticize anything about this short story, it would be that I wish it continued. It ends when she decides to join the Order but I wish I could see her in the palace with her new frame of mind and new found magic. I’m curious as to how it changed her day to day life in the Emerald City

I really liked Dorothy Must Die. I enjoyed the first prequel--seeing how Dorothy ended up as the dictator she did was great. I was really looking forward to the next book in the series.

This has destroyed my enthusiasm. It didn't add to the narrative in any way that couldn't be incorporated into the larger narrative. I feel like the publisher wanted Paige to put something out and she polished her notes about a secondary character to make it a novella.

Disappointing. The fact that the next novel in the series has been pushed back an additional six months, it feels like things are falling apart in Oz.

This novella paints a picture of Dorothy and Glinda through the eyes of Jellia, a maid at the palace in the Emerald City. Serving Dorothy is a nightmare but when she is snatched by Glinda to serve in her pink palace, Jellia discovers an evil plot in store for the whole of Oz. The author does an excellent job in making me hate particular characters and wish for their demise. I'm absolutely hating Dorothy before I've even picked up the first Dorothy Must Die book!

Pink everywhere! Glinda loves pink! The Witch Must Burn by Danielle Paige is the second book in the prequel to the Dorothy Must Die series. Jellia is Dorothy’s head maid at the Enchanted palace and she gets to go to Glinda’s house for the summer. In this exciting and engaging novel, Jellia figures out her true powers as she learns how she needs to save Oz. I gave this novel five stars and would recommend it to my peers. Before you read this book, read the first book in the prequel.

The author of this novel, Danielle Paige, is a New York Times bestselling author. She is the author of the Dorothy Must Die series. Not only does she write young adult novels, but she also works in the television industry. She won the Writers Guild of America Award and was nominated for several Daytime Emmys. Paige also has written a new series called Stealing Snow which has received very positive reviews. Paige’s use of vivid descriptions and magical settings bring her characters and her novels to life.

The Witch Must Burn by Danielle Paige introduces a new character named Jellia who is Dorothy’s head maid at the Enchanted Palace. Jellia has strong feelings about Dorothy and finds out a secret about her. Glinda, the good witch, visits the palace and wants Jellia to come to her house and be her maid for the summer. Jellia is a little worried because she doesn’t know what will happen to her. During her visit, she finds out some surprising and disturbing things. Jellia doesn’t know her powers and what she is capable of. During the novel, she learns how she is special and can save Oz from the evil that is upon them. This book is a story of Jellia and how she meets new friends, learns about herself, and realizes that she needs to save Oz.

Paige uses descriptive literary devices throughout the novel to bring the story to life. Imagery is used to create engaging content and descriptive words are used to paint a picture in the reader’s mind. Paige describes the location of Glinda’s house, “Outside the carriage, the countryside was remote and desolate. Lonely-looking blue hills, barren and rocky, surrounded us, and the trees were twisted and thorny. Here and there, huge craters dotted the landscape” (Paige 222). Paige is able to create a scene in the reader’s mind. Because Paige is so specific in her descriptions, I can play a movie in my head as I read the book. I am always engaged and always want to keep reading.

Paige uses plot twists in her novel to create suspense and keep the reader engaged. When something unbelievable happens, my jaw would drop. I can’t say exactly what happened that made my jaw drop, but let’s just say someone is trying to take over Oz and they are not the person you would think is secretly evil. Even Jellia is surprised, “I flung my hands up and took a step backward” (Paige 269). Jellia just can’t believe what has happened and I couldn’t either. These twists are always unexpected and change my view on certain characters. I like the plot twists in this novel because it makes me want to keep reading.

Paige creates realistic characters that are relatable. Each character has a specific personality, and I could detect this in the novel. With Paige’s descriptive skills, her characters seem real. After something dramatic and revealing happens, Jellia describes how she is feeling. She says, “That evening, I could barely finish my dinner. My stomach was knotted in fear, and my head was a jumble of conflicting thoughts (Paige 254). I can understand how Jellia feels. In real life, people get stressed all the time, but Jellia’s stress was intense. By creating these feelings and emotions in her characters, Paige makes the novel more realistic and understandable.

This is a great continuation of the prequel to the series and I would recommend it to all of my peers. Paige’s use of descriptive devices, creation of relatable characters, and unbelievable plot twists had me engaged throughout the entire novel and had me wanting to keep reading. However, make sure you have read the previous book in the prequel, No Place Like Oz by Danielle Paige, before you read this book.

This one was soooooo much better than the first story! Though I have to say I'm officially convinced Glinda in this story is Dolores Umbridge reincarnated after reading/listening to this one; and especially with her PINK EVERYTHING even down to the food!

But to really describe her....
description

She is definitely as evil as evil gets though I hate to say it, but she's WORSE than my favorite beautiful vampires where and they both have nothing on her cause Glinda is many words I can't say and want to say. Truly the Umbridge of her world and how she thinks and ugh! So much PINK!!

Now, let's talk about Jellia and sexy handsome Nox.
Both are bad-A's and I seriously loved Jellia more. I'm excited and hope to see more of Nox in the stories, if not, hopefully he shows back up in the main series but I'm sure this isn't the last time we've seen him.

And can we mention a huge twist of what Glenda is also up to!? WHAT THE HECK!?
description

Overall solid 5 stars and I can tell each story is probably (and hopefully) going to be much better than the one before! I seriously cannot stop listening to these stories and I'm glad my Libby had the first volume available that I could download/borrow it and caved to do these novellas first to set me up for the mind Dorothy Must Die series!

2.5 ✨ to the second novella in the "Dorothy must die" series, The Witch must burn.

This was way better and less disappointing than "No place like Oz", but still not extraordinary.

What I loved about it was that we see the perspective of Jellia, a maid in the Emerald Palace, rulling for Dorothy.

One day, however, Glinda pays them a visit and is attracted by the maid's magic, that only she can see, so she tells Dorothy she wants to borrow Jellia for the summer.

Convincing Dorothy through magic to accept, off they go to Glinda's palace.
Unfortunately, along the way they stop to place a weird machine with the purpose of extracting the magic out of Oz.
And in order to do this, they tie Jellia to the machine, who goes through a lot of pain.

She survives and meets Nox, a guy who helps around and apparently wishes to help her, too.
She will soon find out his true purpose.

The torture scene will happen again later, so if this is triggering for you, proceed with caution.

What I didn't like are the characters.
I understand what the author was trying to do and make them evil, but it feels really forced and unrealistic at times.

All in all, this one has potential and I'm curious of continuing the series.
7 more novellas and 4 main books to go! ✨
