Everyone knows you don't mess with the empire. Our tyrannical overlords rule our conquered kingdom with an iron fist. Even after they killed my parents and left me orphaned and ostracized, I've swallowed my resentment. I survive by keeping my head down, scavenging the scraps my neighbors discard.
But when I see the empire's soldiers destroying my mother's last sculpture in the town square, years of bottled rage boil over.
I never expect my sudden act of defiance to spark a full-out rebellion. Now I'm at odds with the empire's entire army with nothing but my wits and sheer stubbornness on my side. Well, that and three incredible men I'm guarding my heart from, because they can't possibly want a nobody like me... can they?
No one thinks I stand a chance, but I'm done with cowering. I'll lead my country to freedom–or die trying.

What to expect: - Reverse harem/why choose (3 men) - Spice 1.5/5🌶️ - Childhood friends to sorta enemies to lovers - War/rebellion - Unique magic system - One horse trope
My thoughts: I so badly wanted to love this book but it fell flat. The characters are bleh, the only one I liked was Iko, the others had almost no personalities. I felt no connection to them whatsoever. Though, I did admire Signy’s strength and perseverance throughout the book. The plot was super rushed. As soon as one battle ended another began within the next few chapters. This book would’ve been better as a duology, at least then the plot would be spread out and the characters would have more time to connect with each other. The world was super lacking, we had no description of what it was like before being taken over. I do know that this book takes place within the same world as another one of Eva Chase’s books so I will cut it some slack.
The one highlight was the magic system. I liked the different gods and goddesses, definitely unique.
I was wavering between 3-4 stars on this but I ended up rounding up because the more I thought about it, the more I realized I really enjoyed this one.
I haven't read anything from Chase outside of her Royals of Villain Academy series but I've wanted too. This was one of the books I was given at Apollycon and while it takes place in an bigger, established universe by the author, it's definitely one you can read on it's own. It was short - a little over 200 pages - and I was able to finish it in pretty much one sitting but now it made me want to read the other series in this world because I must know what else happens.
Here we meet Signy who has been shunned by her town and seemingly rejected by her goddess. In a moment of defiance, she stands up to the empire's soldiers and basically single-handedly starts a rebellion. Along the way she meets two rebellion soldiers - Iko & Jostein - and reconnects with a childhood friend turned enemy, Landric. While I'm fairly new to the 'why choose' genre, this one felt natural and easy to me. While the timeline seemed a little sped up - I think the book only takes place over the course of a week - I felt it didn't hinder my enjoyment or believability of their feelings. I mean, I feel everything is heightened with the threat of war on the horizon.
I have to admit that I falsely thought this was a short story. It's not. Maybe it's not as big as the other books in this realm, but it's still a complete novel, with background, mythology, world building and character growth. I'm afraid this story didn't really fit me and it is influencing how I read and review it. It's in every possible way an Eva Chase story. The story is told from multiple points of view, the story involves a heroine and multiple guys adoring her and there is some politics and some magic. The book, however, focuses mostly on fighting and if there's one thing I'm not really interested in it's battles, fights and confrontations. I always have issues keeping track of what is happening and since the focus is on the action and not on the emotions I always have issues caring about what happened. This book is actually one big battle, a war, and although there are some emotional moments, it's not the focus of the book. Which doesn't mean it's not a good book, on the contrary, I think most readers will love it. It's just not my kind of book.
Review of Heart of Defiance by Eva Chase: 3.5/5 Stars
As a huge fan of Eva Chase's work, I had high hopes for Heart of Defiance, and while I enjoyed the story, it fell just short of some of her other books for me.
The plot centers around Signy, a young woman living a harsh and isolated life after being shunned by her village for not receiving the blessing of her godlen. Her family is gone, and her aunt and uncle have kicked her out. Despite these challenges, Signy's story takes a bold turn when she fights back against the oppressive soldiers of Darium, a monarchy occupying her homeland. This act sparks a rebellion, allowing Signy to find her purpose and allies in Jostein and Iko, both soldiers, as well as Landic, a childhood friend secretly in love with her.
I loved the premise of a strong female lead rising from such a low point to lead a rebellion, and the dynamics between Signy and her companions added some great tension to the story. However, I felt that the pacing was too fast, and the story wrapped up too quickly, especially towards the end. The conclusion seemed rushed, with the epilogue filling in details that might have been more satisfying if woven into the narrative itself. Additionally, I would have loved to see more development in the relationships between the characters—especially the emotional connections between Signy, Jostein, Iko, and Landic.
Overall, Heart of Defiance is a good read with a compelling plot, but I wished for more depth and a slower, more fleshed-out journey. Fans of fast-paced fantasy with strong heroines will still find it an enjoyable experience.

Another brilliant novel by an amazing author. I loved this story and the FMC was so brave and inspiring. If taking a stand for what you believe in and facing it head on is something that motivates you, you will love this story.
This was my introduction to Eva Chase's work. I was a beta reader for this story. What a great way to discover a new author to love.
I genuinely enjoyed the story. Our FMC is a survivor, she has been kicked while down her whole life, but yet never loses her heart. A story about rebellion, justice and of course, spice 😉. She has 3 love interests and she gets to have them all. They're so easy to love and the banter between them made me laugh at times. Great story.

This book is pleasant, the quality of the writing is good, and it was fun learning how Signy managed to defeat the Darium empire, after hearing so many references to her in the Rite of Possession series, but it just didn’t measure up to Eva Chase’s usual standard. The main problem was its length. As a single, short book, it didn’t allow scope for the character development and slow burn relationship development of her more usual trilogies and tetralogies (that’s a four book series, in case you were wondering). Instead, Signy meets two of her lovers and they form a bond right away, and then her childhood friend who turned on her when the rest of her village did suddenly has a change of heart, she forgives him, and her two other lovers are all ‘whatever’. It just didn’t ring true. The entire book covers a single week, which is pretty quick both for a successful rebellion and for the development of a four person relationship. So I was left not fully satisfied, and wanting more. More time (the story should have been spread out over a more realistic time frame), more details, a map showing where Velduny is located, and some information about how the rebellion was successfully exported to the rest of the half continent. I’ve just come to expect so much more from Eva.

Since I first read Signy and her men mentioned in the first Rites of Possession book, I wanted to know more about the rebellion. And I must admit - when I see an Eva Chase ARC available, I immediately request it. I didn't even read the blurb.
So when the first chapter opens and it was Signy, I was thrilled. I'd finally get her story! Unfortunately, that thrill was more concentrated in the book's beginnings and began to dwindle as the book went on. I always appreciate standalone novels in a larger fantasy world among other series, so I have to recommend it for that alone. If you have read any other series in the Abandoned Realms universe, then this is a great addition to that.
A lot was done in this book's 230 pages. A rebellion is started, the first introductions of the why-choose romance occur, and then we move onto more rebellion battles and growing the relationship, and then wrap up both and move to a happy conclusion (not a spoiler, it is a romance after all). Eva Chase always does an exceptional job in making a why-choose romance believable. You can always see the logic from beginning to end, and this book is no different. It is considerably condensed, but the same plot lines are there. Everything is condensed and that is the reason for my rating. I would have enjoyed another 100-200 pages to flesh out the characters and their relationships, as well as the larger rebellion as a whole. The guerilla battle tactics were highly enjoyable, and I would have liked even more of them.
Overall, a good entry to the wider Abandoned Realms universe, though I would have liked it to be larger in scope and content.
And I say this every Abandoned Realms book, but it bears repeating - this magic system is fantastic.

“I like the way you think, Spitfire. Let’s ruin them all.”
Look out fantasy lovers. A new rebellion is afoot set in the world of the Abandoned Realms. This is a standalone taking place about a century before the Royal Spares series.
Signy is a shunned young woman by her community. After her parents' deaths and her gift refused by her chosen godlen, she's cast out by her aunt and uncle. Now viewed as the 'waif of refuse', Signy stays outside of town foraging for herself. One day, Darium soldiers arrive in town and start taking whatever they want and destroying her mother's fountain statue. Signy has had enough and stands up to them, killing one soldier, the locals rally behind her to send the others off. Only later they come back with a larger squadron to burn the town down.
The events have lit a fire in Signy and she's out for revenge. Some of the locals and Vadunian soldiers ( original soldiers prior to the conquered king) are rallying behind her.
This was a quick paced story of rebellion and love. Signy connects with 2 Valdunian soldiers who will follow her to the ends of the earth. Their support and trust in her was heart warming. Especially after she's been rejected by her people for so long. But another from her past has interest in her as well. And he will prove his loyalty and love for her.
Signy finding her place fighting for her people and finding men who love her and she can call home, was perfection. I enjoyed this story and was able to finish it in a 2 day read. I definitely recommend for those who want a standalone romantasy read

This is a standalone why choose fantasy romance novel set in the author’s Abandoned Realms world and takes place approximately 100 years before the Rites of Possession and Royal Spares series. No prior knowledge of the world is required. Tropes and themes include one horse, rebellion, why choose, clever outcast FMC and cinnamon roll MMCs. There are dark elements to this story, as well as some spice, so please read the trigger warnings.
The Lovely: I loved the FMC, Signy. She’s an outcast because of her past but in spite of that she’s brave and clever. She’s the only one willing to make a stand and she doesn’t let others, or their opinions, hold her back. And she’s a bit impulsive.
The Mundane: While I loved Signy’s relationships with the MMCs, it didn’t feel like those MMCs, especially the first two, had an opportunity to develop as characters. We learned little about their backgrounds, goals, and motivations, all of which seemed to be limited by the short length of the story (just over 200 pages). I found myself wanting to know more about those two MMCs in particular.
Rating: 4/5 Stars 2/5 Flames
Recommendation: I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This fast paced short novel delivers a HEA but doesn’t go into a ton of detail of the world or characters. The magic system is interesting and I look forward to seeing more of it in the related series. If you want a short, fast paced, why choose fantasy romance with a clever FMC, I think you would like this story.
Once again, Eva Chase knocks it out of the park with this story! I am sad that it was a shorter one; I could have happily enjoyed another 200 pages of Signy, her men, and their rebellion.
I adore the strong FMCs that Eva comes up with, and Signy is no exception. She’s fierce and brave, but she’s also extremely relatable with her inner insecurities. Does she let them keep her down? Oh, no. She perseveres through them all. She’s just as magnificent as I imagined she would be when we first learned of her in the Rites of Possession series. Speaking of which, if you haven’t read the others set in this world, what are you waiting for? Go now!
The men are amazing, as well. Even Landric, with all he had to make up for, is completely devoted to Signy and her cause. Iko is hilarious and passionate. Jostein is strong and commanding. They’re all wonderful in their own way, and I adore that they don’t fight over her or try to get in each other’s way.
Signy inspires a rebellion against the Darium empire, and it’s inspiring to see how the people of Velduny rally behind the cause. I loved seeing all the ways they worked together to enact their various plots and plans.
5/5 stars! 1/5 spice but I’m okay with that because the story is phenomenal. I didn’t want it to end! I couldn’t put this book down once I started it, and I read it in just a couple of hours.
I did receive an advance copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

Rating: 3 ⭐️ Genre: Fantasy Romance Format: ARC Ebook Pages: 236 Spice: 2🌶️ POV: Multiple POV S/S: An Abandoned Realms Novel Check trigger warnings for any book.
In this book, we’re in the same world as the A Game of Veils story, just in a different part of the world, but still facing the same evil forces.
I think reading this book after AGOV is better for the overall enjoyment, as you’re already aware of the world and the powers, and power dynamics. If you go into this book with no previous knowledge, it may feel light on the world-building. It does happen before the other books, chronologically.
Heart of Defiance follows Signy’s story as she is the outcast of her village for not having received powers after her sacrifice ceremony. One thing leads to the next, and she leads the rebellion against the Darium forces.
Alongside her, we’ve got Jostein, Iko, and Landic. This is a Why Choose romance, so our girl Signy just gets to have them all.
I will say, I enjoyed the book overall but it fell a bit short. The romance was there, sure, but it could have been more. The rebellion, yes, but again, a bit short.
It was weird how this book felt more character-driven, yet most of the scenes were rebellion/war /adventure-centered.

“I like the way you think, Spitfire. Let’s ruin them all.”Iko
This short, quick paced standalone novel tells the story of Signy, a fiercely independent young woman who had a harsh upbringing after the death of her parents followed up by a rejection from the Gods who's just had enough of being intimated and oppressed and in a rage of hopeleness and frustration takes a stand for herself and what she believes in starting a rebellion revaluation.
This story takes place before a Game of Veils. It can be read on its own, but I recommend reading both. This is a whychoose rebellion love story. Filled with action and suspense, with instalove for the men who empower her and make her see herself as they see her a strong-willed spitfire. So if you enjoy a good fantasy story with a fiesty main female character, give this book a chance

Heart of Defiance is a great addition to the Abandon Realms world. I recommend reading after the Rites of Possession series. This story takes place beforehand, but the previous series lays the groundwork for understanding this world and its challenges. There are many things that you already have background on - we hear the story of Signy in the Rites of Possession series, but reading her own story was an adventure. An entire revolution is started by a single woman saying no. The line is crossed, and not doing anything is no longer an option. If she dies, then she dies by doing something.
I enjoyed getting to see her through the other characters' eyes. Some are devoted right away, but the last one has to earn his place by her side.
I have loved books by this author before and this one is a sweeping adventure. I could feel their fear of taking a stand but also understand how they have been pushed so far that the potential for loosing was a better option than never trying.
A story I could see myself reading again.

I first discovered this world through the Royal Spares series. I really enjoyed the world built by Chase in this series, and throughout there are mentions of countries who had gained their freedom from the empire in those books. So I was very interested in reading a bit about that story of how the other regions escaped the tyranny of the Darium Empire.
I feel that the book starts so well with introducing us to a country pushed to the edge my the abuse of their foreign invaders and the events that spark a rebellion. But from that point the story moves very rapidly, both the driving plot and the romance move at a pace that feels too quick, especially compared to the pace of the other books set in this world. But I still definitely enjoyed it. I would love to see more of the story play out and to see a more flushed out view of this world. I also wish we'd gotten a map to understand where in this world Velduny is located, it's not shown on maps in the Royal Spares series, so it seems the Darium Empire of the past is much more vast than what remains by the time of the Royal Spares series.

Heart of Defiance by Eva Chase completely pulled me in from the first page. This young adult fantasy delivers everything I love in a story—an underdog heroine, an oppressive empire, deep emotions, and a plot that never lets up.
The main character is fierce, relatable, and full of heart. Watching her journey from a quiet survivor to someone who dares to fight back was both empowering and emotional. I loved how raw her emotions felt, especially in the moment she finally snaps—it was powerful and real.
Eva Chase's writing style is vivid and easy to get lost in. She paints the world so clearly without overloading on detail, and the pacing is just right. There’s always something happening, but it never feels rushed.
The plot kept me on the edge of my seat with twists that felt natural and exciting. And the characters? So well-developed. Even the side characters felt like people I could care about. There’s tension, hope, heartbreak, and fire—literally and figuratively.
If you’re into stories of rebellion, emotional depth, and strong character arcs, Heart of Defiance is a must-read. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one in the series.
TITLE: Hearts of Defiance GENRE: Fantasy Romance AUTHOR: Eva Chase TROPE: Reverse Harem TYPE: Standalone (Related To The Royal Spares Series) POV: Multiple POV MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5
I enjoyed this standalone story in the Abandoned Realms world, reading late into the night, only finally putting the book down when I could barely keep my eyes open. Hearts of Defiance takes place about a century before A Game of Veils, so you do not have to have read any of the previous books in this world first.
I enjoyed Signy’s character, who never let her life situation get to her; instead, she chose to make the best of it. I loved the relationships she formed with her men in this why choose standalone. The friendship between Jostein & Iko and the fact that they both felt an attraction and appreciation towards Signy right from their first interactions had me falling for these characters in record time. I cannot wait to see what comes next in this Abandoned Realms world, making it worthy of a 4 / 5-star rating, in my opinion.
✨𝓐𝓡𝓒 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀✨ 📖: Heart of Defiance: An Abandoned Realms Novel (The Royal Spares) 💻: Now available (& on KU)
Heart of Defiance is a why choose romantasy novel set in the world of the Abandoned Realms (a century before the events in the Rites of Possession and Royal Spares series) and can be read as a standalone.
In this story, we meet Signy who was orphaned and shunned by her remaining family and townsfolk. After years of repression under the Darium Empire, she decides to fight back. She never thought she’d find acceptance, let alone a sense of purpose and love.
Heart of Defiance is a novella-length tale featuring a passionate why choose between and fierce FMC and 3 devoted MMCs. This powerful narrative highlights how a flicker of hope can ignite a rebellion against oppression and injustice. This story also provides additional background to this rich and dark romantasy world.
Huge thanks to the author and BookSirens for the review opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review
I was eager to read this prequel to Eva Chase's Royal Spares series. I did not realize that Rites of Possession also took place in the same universe, so I look forward to reading that soon. But it is such a compelling world, so it was fun to get a glimpse of some of its history.
I found the characters to be immediatly relatable, and I was drawn into their story right away. It is a tale of rebellion and defiance against the opressive overlords who have conquered the continent. In the face of tyranny, a small group led by one young girl takes on the entire army to stand up for themselves.
Of course, there is also the romance element, and the sexy men who cannot resist our defiant heroine. We get to see insolide their heads from time to time, since this tale is told from a first person perspective but with varying narrators through each chapter.
This is a a standalone story. You don't need to have read any other novels in this universe to understand the plot and meet the characters.
I went into this one, feeling like I wanted a bit of paranormal romance alongside some rather complex strategizing, plotting and of course, some quirky characters, who will take me away for a bit from reality.
Eva Chase certainly has a unique manner in regard to her storytelling approach and it most certainly shows here. The FMC is one of those characters who starts off as an outcast in her community, but as the story progresses she really comes to her inner strength and determination to fight against the villains. In her quest for freedom, she encounters some unexpected allies, who admire her charisma, vision and kind heart.
I did enjoy the story though I did not expect so many fighting scenes, but then again at times of rebellion that is to be expected. The love story was on the sidelines here and I reckon that perhaps if the story was longer, things could have developed in a more emotionally significant manner. Overall, this has been a pleasant experience as the magical elements here were quite intriguing, and I am glad that I got the chance to read this story.
I picked this book up on a whim as I loved the cover and thought the title sounded cool. I’m very happy to report that the book matched everything it promised and I had such a fun time reading it.
I think my favorite of the four main characters is Signy. She hasn’t had it easy after she failed to appeal to the gods to grant her a gift but when she sees soldiers destroying her mother’s fountain, she doesn’t hesitate to step up. She ignites a rebellion and finds herself in the center of it. Her desire to help her fellow people is very admirable and while she makes mistakes along the way and loses people close to her, she grieves and then chooses to fight another day. I love her dedication and conviction combined with her empathy.
Her three men, Ilko, Jostein and Lanric, might not be the typical why choose MMC’s as they all are first vying for her singular attention. But it doesn’t take long for them to understand that it doesn’t have to be one or the another. Both or all three is actually amazing.
The plot moves quickly but I was impressed by the amount of worldbuilding the author was able to craft in less than 200 pages. I know this is part of a larger universe and after finishing the book, I am eager to jump into the next story. I want to know more about the world, about the gods and hopefully see Signy and her men once or twice more.
*Reverse Harem *Fantasy *Multi-1st-PoV *Strong Willed FMC *Friends-Enemies-Lovers *War/Rebellion *Building Harem (3) *Low Heat *Standalone *Shared World Fair Fantasy Signy our FMC is certainly a fighter! She goes through some tough tough times but she refuses to let it get to her as she goes on to become a beacon of the rebellion 💪 along the way she reconnects on another level with childhood friend Landic, and encounters friends Jostein and Iko who certainly bring their own connection to this little harem 😀 they come together through the trials they face to rid their world of the oppressive monarchy! Having read Eva’s other Romania’s books this one doesn’t quite have the world building and depth of character development that the others have - it’s a it too fast paced for that - although this is likely due to this being a standalone than a series! It is set in the same world as Rita of Passion but you do not need to have read them to enjoy/understand this book 👍
“Heart of Defiance” is a standalone why choose novella in a fantasy world where people devote themselves to the Gods to receive a minor magical gift. I decided to rate and review this book as a novella, knowing that authors have to make choices when they have limited pages to write their story.
This standalone focuses on the rise of a rebellion, thanks to a young woman who has been shunned by her own people all her life, but who decides to fight back for herself and those she lost. The story is definitely romanticized, but I loved seeing a spark of fire grow into a firestorm to give the people their payback. There isn’t a lot of character building happening, but if you love an action-packed storyline where the “little people” gain their power back, you might really enjoy this one. I had fun reading it, and I ended the story with a big smile on my face, and excitement for more books in this world in the future.
Heart of Defiance is a standalone from the same world as Game of Veils. It's a RH fantasy romance with a determined strong FMC.
Signy has been looked down on in her small town. She didn't receive a gift for her sacrifice so they think that she is worthless. But the great thing about her is that she doesn't let them get to her. She is independent, thoughtful, and so smart. And when the enemy soldiers come into their town and start to destroy her mother's last sculpture...she fights back. She inspires others to stand with her, but it doesn't take long before the enemy retaliates. Many see this only as a loss, but some see that it's a spark. It only takes a spark to cause a blaze.
This is a great story of four characters coming together to help each other. The odds are against them as they face an army.
I highly recommend reading this if you love adventure and a story with great heart to it.
A quick-paced glimpse of the past for the shared world of the Royal Spares and Rite of Possession series. Signy was a very passionate, impulsive FMC who won the hearts of many over the pace of the book. Each of the guys who hold her heart have a few unique characteristics, but I can’t help but I wish there was more development of their personalities and pasts. We have a fast paced revolutionary tale with action left and right on the battlefield. The set up for the revolution was well done and was enhanced with knowledge of the other series but not necessary to have. I felt the timeline escalated very quickly and the world building took a bit of a hit here in my opinion however isn’t completely unexpected with standalone HEA/HFN novels. It was a nice history backstory for the ongoing series in the shared world being built.

We finally have the story of Signy, the legendary heroine of Velduny (and her trio) that we heard so much about in the Rites of Possession series! I absolutely loved Signy! She was so feisty and scrappy, a true survivor of oppression, and as person without a godlen gift, a thoughtful nod to the power of perseverance. Jostein, Iko and Landric were also very well developed characters for a shorter story and their ability to see Signy beyond the stigma and come to value, admire and love her was really heartwarming. This was an action packed read that I devoured all in one sitting and a delicious slow burn romance with a couple scorching scenes as the relationships naturally develop. This novella can easily standalone, but I would recommend it as a must read for anyone who enjoyed the other series in this world. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Enjoyable standalone set in Eva Chase's two series: Rites of Possession which just completed and The Royal Spares. You don't have to read those first as this book occurs hundreds of years before the events of those books. I highly recommend reading them eventually !
So this is a short story, around 200 pages, about a start of a rebellion. It's fast paced, full of plot, with a dash and sprinkle of romance.
Signy, is bullied and nicknamed "the waif of refuse", among the bullies is her childhood friend Landric. Her mother left the town a fountain as her legacy and is the turning point for Signy to defy the Darium army that has invaded their lands.
I enjoyed the story but found the timeline a bit farfetched. She is able to gain enough rebels and fight back within a week's span. I only wish the book was a bit longer for the romance to settle in and feel more real.
It has only been a little while since I visited Eva Chase's Abandoned Realms world, and I was excited to dive into it again, and learn more about this world from another point of view.
And it was fun to see another side, it's a very different novel from The Royal Spares, which gripped me from the beginning.
Sadly I couldn't say the same for Heart of Defiance, the beginning felt a little slow and the characters, although I thought was a promising group, from different walks of life, just felt a little off.
And even though I can't say that nothing happened, because the story never got boring, it did feel a little rushed, which might be why I didn't feel the same connections iI felt while reading other Eva Chase books.
