RISKY BUSINESS — Self-defense instructor Alicia Mason was shocked and infuriated when her brother's best friend, Clint Kelly, announced his intent to marry her. But she'... more »d long ago learned the folly of loving this arrogant macho man - even if the heated desire in his eyes did send a current of answering need tingling to her very toes. But when family obligations forced them into too-close-for-comfort contact, suddenly it was her own wayward heart that needed heavy-duty protection...
Hmm, not much intrigue here. Hero pretty much lay it all out for the heroine in chapter one. He confesses, explaining why he did what he did when he learned of her teenage crush on him. Now that she is older, he is totally proposing but unlucky for him, she is playing hard to get. Girl claim she’s over him, anything he says she doesn’t believe. Boy is thrilled for the chase. Or, he thinks it’s a chase. Clearly, the story should have ended there. Too predictable. Not my cup of tea…
I totally like the unrequited love trope and all the pieces combined but it was way too clear cut. Meanwhile, the author captured chemistry and tension well, I needed angst, and a lot of enigma. I like wondering about his words and actions, I engage in reading in between the lines, not entirely reading an open book. No pun intended.
