I am such a sucker for a cowboy romance, but add in a MMA fighter MMC with a dirty mouth, big heart and only eyes for one girl! YES PLEASE!!
“That’s it, honey, use me” “I’ll let you taste yourself when I’m good and done.”
You’re sucked right into Jude & Romy’s world being pulled back together after 12 years of separation due to one night thinking they could take their friendship to the next level! & after that one night, Romy did what she always did and ran. So here they are both pulled back home after something major happens on Jude’s family’s ranch, causing them to reunite and find out that spark never faded!
“F*ck, Romy, my memory doesn’t do this justice”
Jude has it BAD for Romy and there was no way this man wasn’t going to let up from this second chance and I was here for it! I was yelling at Romy to “JUST GIVE IN” lmaoo
“The truth- she was my endgame.” “Right here. Where we can watch the sunset, and I can watch you glow.” 🥹
But hold on, I was actually so invested in knowing what the heck is going on with Hazel!?!! Romys sister gets herself arrested, which being the reason Romy ends up back in their hometown! This was just a huge mystery to me lol I feel like I need more of the story here!
I absolutely loved how Jennifer set up the characters for book two, I already know I am going to eat it up because lowkey, Lina was giving me the FMC vibes I LOVE! And Reed was giving that BDE lmaoo I can’t wait!
The spice is perfect the story line is great the mystery is a cool change to the cowboy genre. I can’t wait for book two. This book I got to beta read and I have to say it was an honor. When the cage fighting cowboy has a murder on his ranch that brings back the love he has chased for 12 years there is nothing that will stop him from getting her to see they belong together.
I really wanted to love Among the Willows—cowboys, MMA fighters, small-town suspense? That’s right up my alley. But unfortunately, I didn’t connect with this one like I expected. The writing and sorry telling was great! But I just didn’t feel connected tot he characters.
Romy’s flightiness was a struggle. I completely understand that she has trauma and reasons for running, but her actions often felt self-centered, making it hard for me to truly connect with her. Jude, on the other hand, was a sweetheart. A cage-fighting cowboy? Yes, please. But I found myself wanting more depth from him beyond just his unwavering devotion to Romy.
Beyond the characters, there was a lot happening in this book—romance, mystery, family drama, and Jude’s fight training. I love a good suspense subplot, but instead of keeping me on edge, the story felt a little too chaotic at times.
That said, if you enjoy second-chance romance with plenty of grit, a tough-yet-devoted hero, and a drama-filled plot, this might be a great fit for you! It just wasn’t quite the right one for me.
Touch her and die Cowboy / MMA trope Golden retriever MMC Black Cat FMC
Wow… Among the Willows was incredible! I’m so excited to have discovered Jennifer L. Strand as a new author because this book proves she’s going places with her writing. I was hooked from the very first page. If you’re a fan of the popular TV show Yellowstone, you will definitely enjoy this story.
The chemistry between the main characters, Romy and Jude, is undeniable. Jude, the golden retriever MMA fighter, is the perfect swoon-worthy hero. His patience and unwavering dedication to Romy make him a character you can’t help but root for. And Romy, with her tough exterior and secret vulnerabilities, is a fantastic female lead. The dynamic between them adds depth to the romance, and their journey is filled with passion, tension, and growth.
However, I’ll admit—there were moments when I wanted to scream at Romy. Girl, just admit what’s right in front of you! It was frustrating at times to watch her fight against what seemed so clearly meant to be. But, in a way, her internal struggle only made the story more compelling, as she fought not just her feelings for Jude but also the lingering mysteries surrounding her sister.
Speaking of mystery—Jennifer L. Strand doesn’t just give us a spicy romance. She weaves in a gripping thriller element with the unexpected turn in Romy’s sister's life. Suddenly, she’s implicated in a murder, and Romy is left to navigate a web of uncertainty and mistrust. This subplot adds layers to the story, keeping you on edge as you try to piece together the truth and wondering how it all fits into the romance.
Jude’s patient pursuit of Romy, despite the many obstacles they face—including her reluctance and the external threats they’re up against—adds a layer of tension that kept me turning pages. He knows that the Willows, with him by her side, is where Romy belongs. The question is: can they overcome their own doubts and insecurities before outside forces tear them apart?
Overall, Jennifer L. Strand has crafted a beautiful, modern-day western love story that’s filled with romance, suspense, and heart. I can’t wait to see what she does next! This book is a must-read for anyone who loves a captivating romance with a hint of mystery and a strong, determined heroine.
Why are you people rating this 5 stars?! This was absolutely horrible! Like what even was the damn plot bc I couldn’t even tell bc they were too busy HAVING SEX TO HAVE A DAMN PLOT IM SO ANGRY RIGHT NOW I CANT BELIEVE I WASTED MY DAMN TIME ON THIS. like oh ur sister is being accused of murder but u don’t wanna help her bc you’re to busy trying to get with ur childhood lover or whatever! God I seriously have never hated a book so much and I’ve read ICEBREAKER. Do you know how horrible a book has to be for me to prefer ICEBREAKER?!
Y’all, you get it all in this book... The mutual “it’s always been you”, mma fighter/cowboy mmc 🥵, suspense, slow burn, he calls her “honey”, touch her and d!e, SPICE (oh, the spice!!!), fmc who finally returns home after years away, forced proximity, found family, small town ranch…This book was jam packed!
Things on the ranch take a wild turn that ends up bringing back both Romy and Jude. After 12 years of not seeing each other or coming home they are forced to encounter each other and make sense of what has happened. Along the way all the feels come out between them, and it is a wild ride. (Literally 😉) Buckle up because this read takes you along the whole time and it is good! Jude won’t give up this time and he is determined to make sure that Romy knows she is it for him and that he will do whatever it takes for her to see that. Romy is prone to run from her feelings and anything difficult. Only this time he won’t let her run without following- she is his home and he is hers. Home is where the heart is- for them it has always been with each other back on the ranch. ❤️
Also, shout out for that playlist in the book. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Among The Willows by Jennifer L. Strand 4/5⭐ 3/5🌶️
This was my first book by this author, and I liked it! The chemistry between the main characters is so strong—it jumps off the page! The murder mystery and all the secrets sprinkled throughout the story make it even more fun to read. Romy and Jude are best friends who have a one-night stand, but when Romy leaves without saying goodbye, they lose touch for 12 years. When Romy's sister ends up in jail for murder, she has to come back home to help her out. And guess what? She runs into Jude again! Their connection is still as powerful as ever, even after all those years.
After Romy left, Jude also moved away and became an MMA fighter. When a murder happens at his family's ranch, he returns home and is shocked to see Romy again. He’s determined to show her that they belong together. I loved how Jude is all in for Romy—he's patient, understanding, and protective. He goes out of his way to prove that she can trust him.
Romy is a strong, independent woman, especially after breaking up with her cheating boyfriend. I get why she’s cautious about diving into a new relationship so soon. Sometimes her stubbornness and difficulties with communication were a bit frustrating, but her struggles made her feel real and relatable. With Jude’s persistence, she gradually starts to let her guard down and open up to him.
Overall, this was a delightful read! The chemistry is fantastic, the side characters are lovely, the spice is hot, and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat!
Cowboy romance with a twist! Romy returns home after 12 years because her sister is in serious trouble & she’s recently laid off. Jude returns to support the ranch where everything went down. This second chance romance has suspense, spice, mystery and a cage fighter MMC that’ll make you swoon.
I loved, loved, loved this book! I loved Romy and Jude’s relationship. I love how the beginning there were little hints of things going on that you didn’t know about and then finally figuring out some of these complicated relationships(not trying to spoil anything). I was hooked from the very start of this book! I highly, highly recommend reading this book!! I downloaded it but you can guarantee I’ll be purchasing a copy just to be able to highlight my favorite parts!!!
I was lucky to get an ARC of Among The Willows by Jennifer L. Strand, and I absolutely LOVED this book. It's been a while since I read a small town/cowboy romance, and this one made me remember how much I adore this genre/trope. Cowboys, just do it better, ya know?
One of the highlights of this read was definitely the absolute love that Jude felt for Romy. I mean, this man was down BAD! Their chemistry and yearning were off the charts, which made the spicy scenes even more satisfying.
Overall, this was definitely an amazing book. I loved the hint of suspense mixed in with the plot. It kept me on my toes throughout the whole book and added a unique twist to this kind of genre! 🧡
Read this is you like: - Friends to Lovers - Second Chance Romance - Small Town - Cowboy Cinnamon Roll MMC - Tough but Sweet FMC - Murder Mystery - 'Fuck it' moment - Touch her and die
I was immediately hooked by the plot and the memories of Jude and Romy together twelve years ago, and this being a second chance romance I was hopeful because I love them.
Romy disappointed me immediately. Her reasons for leaving and keeping Jude in the friend zone for years and then ghosting him after things happened were simple cowardice and immaturity. He was your best friend who you had a crush on…that would have been the best relationship ever but no, she had to “find herself”. Cut to 12 years later, back in her hometown with Jude, what does she do? Keep him at a distance, not apologize and act awkward because she still is attracted to him…but you guessed it “still that confused, eighteen year old girl.” You’d think after more than a decade still harboring feelings for him she’d jump at the opportunity to make things right and move forward but no. Disappointing.
Jude openly showed he wanted her for keeps and she was like “stupid heart” for having feelings for him. Make it make sense. If there was a reason for it, a previous rejection, him never showing that he wanted her, living apart…anything that indicated that them being together couldn’t happen, that would have been all fine and good, but her being a coward and not fighting for him, to stay with him and date him was the nail in the coffin for me. I couldn’t read this book without getting upset anytime Romy and her feelings appeared, or anytime Jude had to think something along the lines of “this time I won’t let her run” cause he knew she would run again.
“It dawned on me that I’d always be willing to wait for her.”
Jude on the other hand gave me everything, hot mma fighter, tortured soul, persistent, obsessed… he was understanding, caring, patient…a fucking saint with a filthy mouth. I wanted her to chase after him because HE deserved it, he was the one left heartbroken and he still had to be the one to pursue…DISAPPOINTING!
I absolutely loved this book so much! Cage fighting cowboy who will stop at nothing to get the girl sign me up! The story was perfect, the mystery was a great and added an element to the cowboy romances, and the spice was freaking spicing!
When the cage fighting cowboy has a murder on his family’s ranch that brings back the love of his life there is nothing that will stop him from helping her see that they belong together. I loved Jude and Romy and their connection, it had me captured from the beginning. I loved the protectiveness Jude had for her. He’s always showing up for her and showing his love. 5⭐️ can’t wait for book 2!! Thank you to the author and net galley for this arc! This comes out on 3/21 go preorder this and read it!
🌾 second chance 💛 suspense 🌾 mental health rep 💛 Yellowstone vibes
Romy was the siren to the tornado Jude was and had always been. She was always everything to him and Jude always kicked himself for letting her go when she ran away.
Romy wasn't shy about showing him how right she was for him now. She may have gotten away once but Jude refused to let her go again.
These two were two people who were meant to be together but needed to be able to live their lives to see how much they belonged with each other. Right Person wrong time. They both needed to grow into who they were now to be able to appreciate each other.
I loved that Jude was all for making sure that Romy wasn't going to get away this time like a whisper on the breeze. He knew she was the only one for him. He just had to prove to her that he was the only one that would ever give her everything she ever needed.
Romy was like a wild stallion who ran when she saw danger. Who could blame her when she craved the stability that she never had growing up other than the Ranch? I was living for Romy to see how much Jude was the only one for her. Just for her to truly see him for him and what he was willing to put on the line for them.
I couldn't get the ending out of my head and I am so beyond excited to read and see more about Lina in the next book!
🔥 Let's Talk About Sex Baby 🥵: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5
We have truck bed foreplay Y'all!! You cannot get any sexier than some outside fun time! These two were two tornados who converge together and made one huge one. They are explosive in all the right ways.
They don't hold back when they are together. They both let it be known what they want. And you can't be mad at being up front with your wants and needs.
I received a complimentary copy via Jennifer L. Strand. All opinions are my own, honest and voluntary.
Give me a friends-to-lovers, second-chance romance, found family, and small-town setting, and I’ll EAT IT UP. Among the Willows delivered all of that and more, blending heartfelt romance with suspense and a “murder mystery” vibe that kept me hooked from start to finish.
Jude is such a multilayered MMC—your classic cinnamon roll with a heart of gold. He cares deeply, but he also has insecurities that make him feel real and relatable. I love a man who’s in tune with his emotions, and Jude embodies that beautifully.
Romy, on the other hand, is fierce, loyal, and independent. She’s dealing with a lot in her life, and while she has her own insecurities, she handles them with grace. I truly admired her strength and resilience.
Together, Jude and Romy had me swooning. From the moment they were on the page, I was rooting for them. Their connection felt so raw and genuine, and the way they supported each other through their struggles was everything. And let’s not forget—the spice? SPICY AF.
The side characters were the definition of found family. I loved how they all showed up for each other, especially during the toughest moments. It made the small-town setting feel even more immersive and heartwarming.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and I want to thank the author for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Side note: The playlist was such a fun addition! Who doesn’t love when books include songs? It really helped set the tone for the story and made the reading experience even better.
Some Tropes You’ll Find: ➵ Second Chance Romance ➵ Friends To Lovers ➵ Small Town Romance ➵ Cinnamon Roll Cage Fighting Cowboy ➵ Murder Mystery
My first June Lark read and consider me lassoed! I went in expecting a cowboy romance and got a full on small town murder mystery with tension, longing, and just the right amount of “he’s loved her forever” ache that keeps me feral for second chance stories.
Romy, our runaway heroine, definitely tested my patience (girl… you walked out after that first time? be so for real 😭). But as the story went on, I found myself rooting for her growth and that messy beautiful journey of coming home, to her roots, her people, and especially to Jude.
And Jude? Lord help me, he’s a cinnamon-roll cowboy, MMA cage fighter with heat. The kind of man who fixes fences by day and ruins your emotional stability by night. He’s patient, loyal, and so gone for Romy it physically hurts. Every scene between them was tension, tenderness, and toe curling chemistry wrapped up in June Lark’s warm, western prose.
The plot hooked me early, equal parts small town intrigue and romance, and the writing paints Thornbrush Ranch like you’re right there smelling the farm and the sagebrush. The murder mystery thread adds a nice undercurrent that keeps you flipping pages long after you should’ve gone to bed.
By the end, I was all in, for Jude’s quiet devotion, for Romy’s redemption, and for that delicious setup between Lina & Reed (book 2 → Burn the Breeze, I’m coming for you!)
My last book for 2025. 160 books read. Feeling awesome about that. This book was a decent end to a big reading year.
I liked the story and was hooked on the progression of the story. I really liked the MMC Jude. He was an MMA fighter but had a beautiful heart and was absolutely caring. He was such a sweetheart and the FMC Romy did not deserve him. This would be a 3.75-4 star read if it wasn’t for the FMC Romy.
She was completely selfish and immature for someone who was 30. The shit she put Jude through and all her running away bullshit was frustrating. She comes back in his life after 12 years and expected him to tell her everything and expect to move on from her running away. And she continued to act that way through the book probably until around 70% where she finally developed as a character. Please do not write FMCs like this. They are so unlikable and it isn’t proper character development when they snap at the MMC for trying to be good to her. I was frustrated as he went out of his way to accommodate her and put her feelings first but she never did that for him. It was very frustrating to read.
Outside of that I did enjoy the story and I’m hoping book 2 will be a lot better. I like the pairing and will definitely give it a go. Just hope the FMC is written better.
I have been loving a cowboy romance so I was so excited when I received this ARC! Jude and Romy will bring you all the ranch romance and will also probably make you hot 🥵
This steamy romance about childhood best friends reconnecting when they are both unexpectedly brought back to town will have you kicking your feet giggling. Jude, an MMA fighter who calls her honey will melt you down to your core. Add in some family drama and suspense, and this book will have you hooked!!
Their tension is unmatched and he chases after her?? SOLD. I wanted both of them to have better communication skills because they were killing me, but it made for a great story and I love how they had to overcome their own insecurities to choose to be together. I will say the mystery aspect wasn’t fully developed, so don’t expect that to come before the romance!
I can’t wait for the next one so I can return to Thornbrush! 🤠
Second chance Small town Friends to lovers Truck bed foreplay Mental health rep Spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️
DNF at 32%. Decided to skim the rest of the book to figure out the side mystery of the murder in the book with her sister.
The premise of this book, which is a murder mystery, had me super intrigued, which is why I picked this one next. However, I just couldn’t get into the romance or the plot of the main characters. You are in love with your BFF and just bail on him without a word and then 12 years later become angry when you come back to town and he doesn’t give you details of this life after two days in town? Just the hypocrisy of the FMC to demand it when she is the one bailing again for a second time without saying goodbye again for that very reason. Just couldnt get behind the immaturity she portrays. I wanted to keep reading because of the great ratings here on Goodreads which usually make me stay but I’m just not interested in this story at all.
You might still love this one as many seem to love it. Give it a try!
Among the Willows is a cute small town second chance romance mixed in with a mystery of what happened to Romys sister Hazel. Romy and Jude definitely have a history with each other, so when they reenter each other's lives, the chemistry, after all those years, created the perfect mixture of tension and spice. There were a couple of times I wanted to shake Romy and talk sense into her!
I, however, felt slightly disappointed by wishing there was a bit more suspense and wishing that a particular sence played out differently (I don't want to say because I don't want to give spoilers).
I loved the side character banters and the potential couples for more books. Overall, it was enjoyable.
I loved Among the Willows—the plot was thrilling, the romance was pining and spicy. I don’t have enough good things to say about our MMC, Jude. Strong, fierce, sexy, an MMA Cowboy—delicious. He’s been in love with her for over half of his life?? Rough AND gentle? He’s perfect, which just reminds me that he’s fictional 😂 I did not connect as much with Romy because I cannot relate to her flightiness, she tried to run away like 5 times, girl you don’t deserve the dedication Jude’s throwing at you when this is how you deal (maybe I’m just jealous? lol). Overall, I loved this book, it had passion, depth, and all the goods 🥹
We all need a dirty talking MMA cowboy in our lives. Jude was everything, so supportive of Romy and always there for her. Even when she ran. He's a tough cowboy cage fighter with a heart of gold. Romy was sassy and independent but stubborn. She always just had herself to rely on so it was hard for her to trust others. Jude and Romy had great chemistry and banter. Their friends were so much fun as well. The suspense of what happened on the ranch and everyone dealing with it was a great storyline.
Thank you so much @jl.strand.author for letting me be an arc reader!🥹
“𝙄’𝙢 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨, 𝙅𝙪𝙙𝙚. 𝙄 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣.”
I absolutely adored this book! A dirty mouthed cowboy, say no more! I’m really starting to love second chance romances. This book had me gripped from the start. The chemistry between Jude and Romy was perfection. I loved banter in this book & the spice was 😮💨 I love the mystery element in this book as well, I just wanted to know what happened!!
So excited to see what comes next in the 𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙗𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙝 𝙍𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙝 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 🤭
This book is so beautifully written. Definitely my top 3 cowboy romances for 2025. I absolutely fell inlove with Romy and Jude. Everybody needs a Jude in their life 😍 this book had me feeling absolutely all the feels. The story, the characters, the side characters. It was all just perfection. I can't wait to get a physical copy for my trophy. This is a book I'll forever recommend to someone wanting a cowboy romance.
I'm always ready for a small country town book. We've got a second chance romance combined with murder mystery/family drama, which was a fun mix. Tropes around communication and avoidance are tough for me as a reader. It was a good amount until going a little far towards the end, but we do get to come back from it. There's also plenty o' spice going on! This did have a fast pace a was a breeze to binge. The side characters definitely have me wanting to return to Thornbrush Ranch. 3.5 rounded up
This small town, second chance romance grabbed my heart! Add in the suspense and the cage fighting element and I was hooked!
Jude and Romy brought a deep connection and undeniable chemistry to this story. I couldn’t help but fall in love with Jude. This cage fighting cowboy was so swoon worthy with his gestures, his patience and his ability to love deeply. And what a mouth he had on him! Drool worthy! Romy grabbed my heart. Her tough persona, her vulnerabilities and her ability to speak her mind made her so relatable. The growth these two go through to get to where they are was as passionate and intense as their characters.
I really enjoyed all the twists and turns this story delivered and I can’t wait to see what comes next in book 2! 10/10 recommend!
I would like to thank Jennifer L. Strand for the opportunity to read and review Among the Willows.
Oh. My. God. Jude and Romy are my new Roman Empire.
I loved their story - from the snippets of the past, to their reunion at the bar, to the sagebrush scene (iykyk 😏) to Vegas post fight and everything in between. Their growth both together and independently was admirable and when they finally communicated I was kicking my feet screaming FINALLY!!
Romy is such a strong person, even if she is a runner. Her life has been anything but easy, but when her estranged sister needs her help, Romy drops everything to go home and help her sister. Her sass was unmatched and I loved how feisty she was. When she finally let her walls down and allowed herself to communicate her feelings with Jude I was SO happy.
Jude is the big, bad cage fighting cowboy who is the biggest cinnamon roll when it comes to Romy. His feelings for Romy never wavered and it was the cutest. I don’t think I have ever seen a man so down bad for his girl as Jude was for Romy. His protectiveness for his family and his girl was so sweet and he is just the biggest green flag. Everytime he used the word honey I melted and when he chased Romy down I was swooning hard.
Their chemistry was so hot and it was beyond obvious that they were perfect together. Jude’s filthy mouth was downright sinful and the way he claimed Romy with every ounce of his being was so incredibly sexy. I just want more and more of them.
This was a 10/10 in my book and I’m so so excited to see what comes next.
Thanks so much to Jennifer for the ARC and for having me as one of her honeybees 🐝🍯
I really enjoyed this one! Jude was so well done and I enjoyed the boldness and spicy attitude from romy too! Def gave me a bit of Yellowstone vibes! Loved uncle chuck he was great too! Can’t wait to see how this series unfolds!
The way we got that preview of book two had me drooooling and now I need it asap! 🫶🏼❤️👏🏼
