What in the world has my soulmate gotten us into this time?
All I want to do is get ready to have our family over for Winter Solstice, but like all things involving Ailin Ellwood, we get pulled into another wild BCA case. The Brinnswick Central Agency tends to pull us in for the really… let’s say difficult—and weird, let’s not forget weird—magical cases, so I have no doubt this one will be a doozy.
Even knowing that, I never really expected to be attacked by kids’ toys and Christmas decorations. But when my viramore—soulmate—is involved, well, things get all kinds of whacky.
Join Seb and Ailin as they try to figure out who’s behind the murderous mistletoe while they get ready for the Ellwood family holiday celebrations.
*This story takes place in the Ellwood/Brinnswick world. Reading the other books might enhance your reading experience, but it's not necessary to read them first. If you want to, you can find the Brinnswick/Ellwood reading order on the author's website.
Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.
She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

I love revisiting Ailin and Seb and this installment was so funny!
Ailin being freaked out by something, FINALLY!!, and Seb getting to laugh at him was so entertaining! Ailin has been terrorising him with reptiles and insects for years so this felt like good payback.
The crime was interesting and weird as usual and I like how it introduced another new type of supe. I do always question why The Three can't just obliterate things if they have the most power that's ever been known though...
Ailin calling Garrick kiddo had me laughing so hard too - Ailin was just so awkward in this book and I loved to see him with some flaws other than being too over protective.
It was so sweet the way Seb wanted to make sure everyone felt loved and part of the family though, I love how far he's come from the first book.
Hopefully we continue to get more of Ailin and Seb because I have such a strong attachment to them now!
It was really good. It has all the fun and sweetness of an Ailin and Sebastian adventure but with a holiday flavor. You do need to be up to date with all of the Elwood and Brinnswick books to know the whole cast and avoid spoilers (so the Elwood chronicles, the Brinnswick chronicles and the first two books of the Ghaulia spinoff) but if you've already read them or feel like getting into the adventure, this book slots there like a dream. If you haven't done the previous reading, there's a big chance you'll be missing out on A Lot of context.
This was fun ... Seb and Ailin are still great together and I enjoyed it, although I didn't read all the books in-between. But maybe I will re-start the series.
This is definitely a different kind of Christmas story and I had fun with it
Seb & Ailin: Case of the Murderous Mistletoe is a fun holiday novella set in the magical world of the Ellwood and Brinnswick series. As expected with Seb & Ailin, it has mystery, it has romance, and it definitely has festive charm….despite the title. 😁
While the author does her best to make this story accessible for new readers, since Sebastian and Ailin are na established couple that gets together in Ellwood series, I’d recommend reading at least that series first. The world-building of this series is intricate, but also complex, and the number of characters might feel overwhelming if you’re not familiar with them.
We start the story with an unusual premise where Christmas decorations and children’s toys suddenly turn on their owners. It’s chaotic as it sounds, but it’s also entertaining, and weird. So, true to the nature of Seb and Ailin’s previous adventures. True to form, they throw themselves into solving the mystery. Along with their family, they work to stop the attacking toys and Christmas decorations, track down clues, and comfort the affected families. As always within this universe, there’s plenty of humour, suspense, and sweet moments to keep things balanced.
Ailin is as stubborn and fiercely protective as ever, while Seb still plays the grumpy one, even though it’s obvious how much he spoils Ailin. They adore each other even after all this years, and their dynamic is still sweet and entertaining. It’s great to see how well they work together both as a couple and as a team. And since both Ailin and Seb, along with most of their family, are very capable individuals, it was interesting to see them struggle a bit to piece things together. That, I think, added some suspense to the story. But there’s still all the sweetness, humour, and action we expect from one of their stories, only this time with a festive twist.
Family plays a big role in this story, too. And even with the pressure of solving the case, there’s still room for little moments of love, laughter, and holiday traditions. The final Christmas celebration wraps things up on a cozy and feel-good note, so it is a perfect read for this time of the year. It’s a funny, cozy, and easy holiday read that has something for everyone and a great little adventure to get you in the festive spirit.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my unbiased review.
OMGee, I haven’t laughed this hard while reading for a while, and aim rethinking my holiday decorations. It’s not just that I missed Seb and A, because I did, it’s that this was the best kind of holiday chaos that only A, Seb, and their gigantic family could solve, along with some of the funniest and squishiest surprises thrown in.
“Thanks for the save,” I murmured. “Like I’m gonna let some possessed murderous mistletoe attack you. Nope. Not on my watch.”
Ha! I’m still grinning from all that happened and have the desire to reread Seb and A’s beginnings because why not, plus I love them so. Ellwood/Brinnswick magic sparkles like only it can in this delightfully lighthearted and 100% pure fun read.
Seb & Ailin: Case of the Murderous Mistletoe By Michele Notaro is a wonderfully entertaining, well written holiday story in the author’s Ellwood/Brinnswick universe.
Full of characters and couples from Notaro’s multi-series world, it is helpful if the reader is familiar with the universe and its inhabitants so that the story isn’t overwhelming with its numerous elements and characters that just have small roles or mentions but are very important in the series/world. With a well-packed magical storyline of 194 pages , there’s only so much background for the author to provide while also fully laying out the mysteries behind the murderous toys and Holiday trimmings that’s at the center of the story.
Notaro does a great job of folding in the amusing aspects of the story, along with the absurdity and the horror of the toys going terrifyingly bad. As the narrative ramps up each element of the storyline, pulling the reader effortlessly into the drama and the mystery, it centers on this one couple and their relationship so perfectly that it makes this reader want to revisit their story all over again.
Seb & Ailin: Case of the Murderous Mistletoe By Michele Notaro is a great addition to the Ellwood/Brinnswick universe stories and my holiday reading list.

Seb & Ailin: Case of the Murderous Mistletoe is a story set in the Ellwood and Brinnswick world, I would recommend reading at least one of these series, otherwise I think you will get confused by the world and overwhelmed by the amount of characters. (I’ve put all the series in this world at the bottom of the review if you want to check them out.)
I don't know how anyone could pick up this book and not fall back in love with these two and their banter. This book was fun, hilarious, chaotic, family-focused, action-filled, shocking with multiple surprises, sweet, festive, and oh so hot!!!
These two are such a great couple, I was stunned when it said they’ve been together for 50 years! Like wow! Relationship goals.
Ailin is so stubborn, he makes me laugh, and Seb is so cute how he acts disgruntled, but really spoils Ailin.
All of our favourite characters are mentioned in this nineteen chapter story that delves into a holiday themed mystery. Join Ailin, Sebastian and their family to discover why children’s toys and Christmas decorations are suddenly attacking people…
This book perfectly combines the charm of the festive season with a super cute and spicy romance that left me smiling from ear to ear.
This book contains sensitive content such as violence and enslavement.

It's always such a joy to reconnect with the Ellwood family, and this holiday-themed novella was a delightfully engaging read. The premise of Christmas gifts attacking the families they'd been sent to is actually quite terrifying, but with Seb, Ailin, and the rest of the Ellwoods on the case I knew there would be a satisfying resolution. As always, Seb and Ailin didn't hesitate one bit to spend multiple long days and stressful nights helping out, and I was just as worried and frustrated as they were by how mysterious the toys' origins were. Seb and Ailin worked with several members of their extended family to investigate, tinker with the toys, and comfort all the families that had been affected, and I loved seeing how quickly everyone rallied together. I definitely felt the urgency and importance Seb and Ailin placed on solving the problem, but they also made time for small moments of comfort and family time in the midst of all the chaos. I adored reconnecting with all the characters I've grown to love in prior books, and they certainly made a fierce force to be reckoned with once they figured out who was responsible for ruining Christmas. My secondhand adrenaline rush from reading that final takedown was no joke, and while luckily everything worked out in the end it didn't come easy. Getting to watch the Ellwoods celebrate Christmas together was the perfect cozy day to wrap up this adventure, and as always my heart felt filled to the brim by all the warmth and love these people have for each other.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
Yes this book is mostly another adventure for Seb and Aillin but you get to see all of the other family members that these two have accumulated over the years, some more than others. This was a fun Christmas story and while I did enjoy it and loved the plot I think the book did suffer in one way. At this point there are so many characters and their various spouses and kids that Michele Notaro has had to include a lot of explanations about all the characters and their relationships. If you haven’t read anything in this series you really need them in order to understand who people are and some of what has happened before. Unfortunately as a person who has read all of the books it reads bogged things down for the first few chapters. It’s a definite catch 22 and no matter how she wrote the book it would be a problem for some readers one way or the other. So if you know the series don’t think that the whole story is going to be explanations and you can either read things as a helpful review or skip those bits. If you haven’t read any of this series 1st enjoy this sweet(ish) story then 2nd dive into this marvelous series from the beginning. Oh yeah and please give a writer the best present that costs you no more than a bit of time and write a review because it really helps them get their work out to more people. Thank you!
Seb and Ailin are just trying to get their Christmas shopping done and enjoy the holidays. This is interrupted by a phone call from Ailin's BIL Alec, who's the head of the Brinnswick Central Agency. The BCA handles supernatural problems. They get called into assisting with Christmas toys and decorations that had gone crazy and are attacking people. Ailin and Seb's children are assisting as well. With multiple instances of this happening and no way to find the one behind it everyone is getting frustrated. Then Ailin thinks of a way to trap the perpetrator. It's not without it's risks but there doesn't seem to be another way. Hopefully everything will work out okay without anyone getting hurt.
This is a really good story and I felt it was well written. I liked the idea of toys/decorations going crazy and attacking people. I loved the way the whole family stepped up to save the town. I loved the mini family reunion. I think the story had a plausible ending. The world and character building continue from the Brinnswick series. If you haven't read it before, there are a lot of characters thrown in and it may seem a little confusing. I'm hoping there's more to come in this series/world.
It was a real pleasure returning to Brinnswick and getting a peek into Seb and Ailin Ellwood's lives. Fifty years in, they are still as snarky and loving as ever. Ailin still expects the world, and Seb, to do what he says and follow his lead. And Seb lets him. Unless he puts himself in danger. They get called in on a case for BCA which involves toys and holiday decorations attacking people. Attacking kids. The whole family is stumped. And then the monster goes after the Ellwood grandchildren. It's a wild ride. Exciting, fast moving. Dangerous and really funny. There's a lot of sizzle and steam. But with eighteen kids, numerous grands and their phones, almost every time they get their shirts off, they get interrupted. Worldbuilding is topnotch. It was fun to get a peek into the Ellwood children's adult lives. And their kids. This was so enjoyable. And a quick read. I'd love if this was the beginning of a series of short visits to Brinnswick. As I was posting this, I saw a title "Seb and Ailin;s Holiday Extravaganza" so I guess I get my wish. I received an advanced copy of this book from GRR and this is my review,
Holiday story from the author’s Ellwood/Brinnswick universe. Paranormal. Established couple. Dual POV.
Ailin and Seb have the house to themselves, sort of, as they get ready to celebrate winter solstice, but they still keep an eye on all their kids and grandkids while consulting on criminal cases. Murderous toys and decorations were not on their bingo card and they are struggling to track down the person involved.
Another fun romp full of action and family for anyone familiar with the Ailin and Seb universe. It was such a treat to see Ailin and Seb back in their element with plenty of cameos from their kids and characters from much of the series, plus there are some newly adopted characters that get added to the Ellwood clan. Whenever this author grants us a glimpse into the founding main characters of these universes I will be here for it, Ailin and Seb’s love and bond are still going strong and their banter as well as commitment just shows their HEA is still going strong. 4.5 rounded up
I absolutely loved this book! Seb and Ailin are one of my favorite couples of all time and being able to see how well they are doing as well as their amazing relationship and how it has evolved made me so happy. Their love for their family is only surpassed by the love they have for each other. Even though there are some serious issues for them to deal with this was also one of the funniest books I have read in a while. Ailin's reaction to some of the weird objects they were forced to confront was so hilarious and I love Seb's attempts to be supportive even while he couldn't stop laughing. Seeing how well all of their kids and grandkids are doing was another highlight for me. I was fully engaged from the first page to the last and I hope there are many more books to come in the wonderful Ellwood and Brinnswick universes.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
I don’t go out of my way to pick up Christmas stories, but I so adore Seb and Ailin and the entire Brinnswick/Elwood universe that I couldn’t wait to grab this one. Seb & Ailin are 50 years down the road from when we first met them, and between Ailin’s younger siblings and Seb and Ailin’s adopted kids there are a whole lot of multi-generational families spread out over Coven lands. With many of the older ones working for brother-in-law Alex at the top law enforcement bureau, the Brinnswick Central Agency, it is not far-fetched that they all get dragged into a Holiday nightmare with murderous gifted toys and holiday decorations attacking adults and children alike. And since Ailin has never been able to stop adopting, let’s introduce a troupe of very tiny elves who are sure to end up as part of the family. It’s pure chaos and joy of the Seb and Ailin kind. I hope there are many more to come.
You know you're in for a great time when Seb and Ailin are around and the Case of the Murderous Mistletoe is no different! Michele puts us right back into the warm and fuzzy family feel that is not expected when you first meet Ailin but Seb is his perfect counterbalance. When it comes to the case they get pulled into over the winter solstice, it's a mix of weird, confounding and really dangerous! It's frustrating to all working on it but what is great is that the majority of the team is made up of their family. Most of their kids have grown up now (The Brinnswick Stories and Tales from Guahala) and it's so good seeing how far everyone has come since we first met Seb and Ailin in the Ellwood Chronicles. It's a perfect read from this world that the author has created and I am always happy to be back in it. Cannot recommend it enough, especially for fans of the series. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
Berserker War, viramore, creepy doll, bakeneko, the lube spell, Fae'lee, Fifi & Fuzzlet
Apparently, this book is part of "The Elmwood Chronicles" as it features Seb and Ailin. Their relationship is already established, as are their children's story. The town of Brinnswick is also portrayed as where they live.
But this can be read as a standalone; reading the previous books is not required. It'll probably be more enjoyable if they are read beforehand.
Not strictly a Christmas story, as Seb and Ailin are witches who celebrate the Winter Solstice with their extended family. This is more of a supernatural mystery book. And it's very intriguing and exciting. There's a ton of action and lots of magic!
I devoured and really enjoyed this book. Now, I want to read the other books in the Brinnswick universe Seb and Ailin and their family. I recommend it!
Sebastian and Ailin Ellwood are getting ready to celebrate the holidays with their ever-growing family. Their shopping is interrupted when they called in by the BCA to help with another wild and weird case – people are being attacked by the new toys and decorations. It gets personal when the attacks happen close to home. Seb and Ailin and their adult kids are more than prepared to solve this case and get back to holiday celebrations.
This is another riveting tale set in the Ellwood/Brinnswick world. The mystery keeps you guessing while the love these two share keeps you reading. We get to visit with old friends, many of them ready to help, all while routing for a successful resolution. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and I am sure you will as well. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Although I’m not up to date with all the Ellwood/Brinnswick stories – yet – I’ve loved Seb and Ailin’s appearances in what I have read, so I had to read this. I love their relationship, and banter, and their protectiveness of each other and their large family. The plot had some twists, and isn’t a typical Christmas story though it does have a HEA.
I loved the world building, and how their family is made up of so many different people who all bring their strengths to the story, and solving the case. I liked that it wasn’t a straightforward one, and in fact turns out to be quite dangerous for Seb and and Ailin who have been solving crimes like this for decades.
I love how different their personalities are, and yet how well they fit together. Their Solstice celebration is a sweet, full-on, family affair. I hope this is the beginning of a new series.
Seb & Ailin: Case of the Murderous Mistletoe takes place in the Ellwood/Brinnswick world. Reading the other books might enhance your reading experience, but it's not necessary to read them first. If you want to, you can find the Brinnswick/Ellwood reading order on the author's website. As Seb and Ailin are getting ready for the winter solstice celebration a new case comes up. Holiday decorations and toys are attacking people. This book had me laughing so much that I feel so good. I love the steam between these two and the fact that it's still there after so many years is amazing. We finally get find out what Ailin is afraid of but I'm not telling you, your going to have to read the book to find out. I would definitely recommend this book as a 5 star read.
In this unpretentious little book, Seb and Ailin are called in to investigate when Christmas gifts and decorations start attacking folks across town. There’s mayhem and mystery, false starts and red herrings, and along the way our intrepid pair make some new friends. Eventually they solve the mystery, save the day, and celebrate in style.
This is the first of their stories I’ve read, so I had no background. I feel the author provided plenty of background, perhaps even more than I wanted, on what went before. Certainly I didn’t feel that I needed to look up prior books to enjoy this one. I did feel there was a fair bit of filler in there, especially when they were talking about the family, but overall it was a cheerful, entertaining holiday romp.
4.5/5 This was a fun, silly Christmas adventure. I enjoyed being back in Seb and Ailin’s POVs for a little while instead of only seeing cameos in the current series. It was fun to see some new creatures, watch Ailin have a visceral doll reaction (lol), and see the whole crew work together to defeat another bad guy. I liked how Seb and Ailin are always fierce but also always caring. That was one heck of a Christmas/solstice adventure, but all’s well that ends well, right? (I hope they get to sleep longer afterwards, but after Seb’s gift, I guess probably not, lol.)
I received an ARC from GRR. This is my honest review.
This is a fun and entertaining story, with quirky, lovable MCs, a fun extended family, snarky banter, and... killer Christmas decorations? There is mystery, hijinks, and Christmas magic, as the guys try to figure out what is going on and set things right. And - yeah - sometimes it's downright hilarious If you are new to Seb and Ailin, I think you'll be okay if you haven't read their other related books, because I think there is enough background here, but I'd be surprised if you don't want to read more after reading this story. Enjoy.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
3.5 stars
I did not realize until I started this book that it was part of a much larger world. There are so many side characters that come from the previous series that I really struggled to keep everyone straight. I think if I was more familiar with the background it would have been a more enjoyable read.
I did think this was a decent story. It was certainly not the standard holiday story. I liked Sev and Ailin (enough I've bought the first book in their series). I liked some of the twists in the story. I just think it's a book best enjoyed after you already know the characters and world-building.
This engaging holiday story is very original, heartwarming and humorous. I enjoyed the action, the humour, the world building, the writing style and the great character development. The relationships between the Ellwood family members are really lovely and warm. They are all so generous and giving and such fascinating characters. I loved the Christmas decorations and toys that were gnashing their teeth at everyone, particularly the scary dolls come to life! So entertaining! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was a really fun holiday story with a side of mystery and romance thrown in. I really liked that it was festive with a twist. Clearly this pair has a way of getting into some interesting situations and working their way through with a little help from their family and friends. Combining getting ready for the holidays with pursuing a mystery and working to resolve it made this story fun, added a little spice because of the danger but also was heartwarming as the family element is so present and so heartwarming. So good. I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
It's great being back in Brinnswick with Ailin and Seb - they're still neck deep in magical shenanigans and still as in love as ever as viramores. And, of course, there is the ever expanding Ellwood family...so much fun.
There's plenty of action, threat, laughs and snark as the gang try to solve the case of attacking holiday decorations and toys; and all in time to wrap the mountain of solstice gifts they've bought the family. A little tense, a little creepy, a lot enjoyable.
I am new to this series, but I really enjoyed Seb & Ailin’s holiday mystery. The world building is excellent and I love stories with established couples. The couple is strong and I loved a little break from the traditional holiday fluff, this has some exciting suspense. I’ll definitely have to catch up with the earlier books as this was wildly entertaining!
