Join all your favorite Final Fantasy XIV characters in this rollicking, modern-day high school comedy!
Alisaie is a high school student attending Eorzea Academy, an exclusive institution created by the merger of former rival schools the Academy of Light and the Academy of Darkness. Though all the students now wear the same uniform, a bitter divide remains between the Class of Light and the Class of Darkness. Worried about the ongoing conflict, headmistress Tataru decides it's time for some bold solutions to raise morale. Let the school games begin!
Take this review with a grain of salt, I am an AVID FFXIV player.
First of all, don't read this if you story skipped, you're not gonna get half of it.
Secondly, I was pretty sure I wasn't gonna like this. It seemed kind of wild and all over the place when I read a few bits when the first chapter was published in Japan, and while amusing to see all my favs in a modern setting, still wasn't sold. I am here to tell you I AM SOLD. I LOVE. I was laughing almost the entire thing, and I have zero regrets.
First of all, the characters. Aside from Krile being a student, love. Ryne and Gaia? Perfection. Sadu and Magnai? I'm dead (spoiler, still hasn't found his Nhamma. He did mention trying to find her though). But they're all so good. I am a little upset about Asahi, he had no right being as pretty with golden retriever energy as he did. It's a good look, it's just hard for me to hate him when hes like that xD.
Secondly (again) the throwbacks. This did a great job of throwing in random story aspects from the game into the manga. Coffee biscuits, the goblin cheese (which is such a small part of ARR I would have forgotten had I not JUST past that part on my alt xD), Thancred and the Nutkin (😏), Little Sun, finding his Nhamma, on and on. I was so amused every time I found a small detail, I told my partner and laughed each time (even though I had to explain what it was, cause he's a filthy story skipper).
Even the art style, I really enjoyed. Everyone was so pretty, and the artist did a good job of getting the characters emotions in the pretty drawn panels and the little chibi versions scattered through out.
If you don't play or story skip, you'll probably not get it. But if you're a full throttle WOL, grab it. 100%.
Eorzea Academy is home to both light and dark classes, but headmaster Tataru has a plan to bring everybody together. This looks a lot like competition, however, so come spend a year with beloved characters from the world of Final Fantasy XIV. And Asahi.
Despite the fact that you could read this book having not played FFXIV, I can’t genuinely imagine why you’d ever feel the need. It is absolutely designed for a very, very specific audience and exists entirely to please them.
Luckily for me, I am exactly that audience. Though I am on a break as I write this, I have played all of the series that these characters spawned from up through its current expansion, so I am quite familiar with their personalities.
And there are oodles of in-jokes for even the casual player, but the person well versed in the lore is about to have a field day picking out the silly gags. When they made reference to the jokes about calling Y’shtola mommy, I knew I was in good hands.
Almost every major and minor character gets page time, although most of the action is seen through the eyes of Alisaie and her twin brother Alphinaud. Alisaie’s brash nature makes her the perfect foil for the taunting of the dark class, especially when combined with Alphinaud’s fussiness.
The story basically just hits literally every trope of a school manga - they have sports day, run a lunch place at the beach, do their summer homework, and manage to get the festival in there too. The point is to enjoy seeing the characters outside of the regular fantasy Eorzea.
Like I said, there are dozens of manga covering these exact story beats and, to a certain extent, better. But if you want the silliness of this setting with these specific characters, it acquits itself quite well.
It really captures the general personalities in a fun way. Urianger still can’t say anything in a straightforward manner, Zenos is annoying, Asahi is both annoying AND has a sister complex, and Tataru sort of has a plan for things. There is barely enough context for the non-playing reader, honestly, which is a definite barrier to entry.
But if you know, as they say, you know. I especially loved that they even kept in Ryne and Gaia’s very obvious relationship (Gaia is hopelessly gay for Ryne). Despite it, you know, all being derived from a raid series that I doubt all the players have even seen. That’s the kind of deep dive they do with this one and there are still deeper ones if you look for them.
This is silly fun. It achieves pretty much every one of its goals and I had a really good time with it, even if it’s paper thin as a premise. It is that other type of fan service, through and through. To its benefit and detriment. Could have used more Y’shtola though.
3.5 stars - it’s fluff, but I really enjoyed spending time with old friends, basically. I don’t think it’s essential, but if you like the game you’ll enjoy it. I don’t honestly know that it’s worth your time if you’re not, however, as you’re kind of literally missing the point. Probably a 3 stars at best for the non-fan.
Well that was a cute little thing. Maybe some unnecessary repetition considering it was one volume but I laughed aloud quite a few times. Will be absolutely confusing to people who have not played the game, I think, and there's a lot of "side story" characters as well, but I enjoyed it as a snack of sorts between other books.
I can't even. This was adorable!!! I read it in one sitting!!
While the plot itself doesn't have anything to do with ffxiv and you could easily read it without knowing the game/worrying too much about spoilers (aside from a few character developments), it's a pleasure to read if you know ffxiv well and love its NPCs. There are plenty of nods to ffxiv storyline and memorable quotes, and many jokes that made me laugh aloud!
For those who are curious about who shows up: we get to see Alphinaud, Alisaie, G'raha, Estinien, and Krile team up against Zenos, Asahi, and Yotsuyu regularly in a series of classic high school manga scenarios. Y'shtola, Urianger, Thancred, Emet-Selch, and Tataru feature often as teachers. There's also fun sidelines with Ryne and Gaia, Sadu and Magnai, Aymeric, Haurchefant, and Ysayle, Lyse, Edda, moogles, and namazu . . . And other side characters too! And there are some lovely little details (I personally love Urianger as a tarot reader! and Aymeric as class president!).
Basically, if you're the type to buy ffxiv merch or enjoy fanart or crush on NPCs (ahem) or just enjoy alternate universe storylines, you'll probably enjoy this book as much as I did. And I would absolutely love a sequel!
1) This is 100% written for fans of Final Fantasy XIV. If you have not or do not intend to play, it's still a lighthearted read, but you won't get as much out of it.
2) If you are currently on your FFXIV journey, I recommend reading this after completing the story up to the end of Shadowbringers. There is nothing in this story that constitutes a spoiler to the game itself, but you will get more out of the appearance of various characters when knowing who they are in the game.
With all that said, as a fan of FF14 and long time fan of the FF franchise, I wholeheartedly loved this manga. Nothing serious or canon, but still a fun jaunt through the idea of seeing the characters of Eorzea in a Japanese High School setting. If you are a fan of FF14 and simply want more of all the characters, this is a great quick read that had me smiling the whole time!
I play FFXIV a lot (I'm practically on it every day. Oops.) and I love the characters and how well fleshed out they are. I love the storyline of the game and was very happy to see that it had come out with a manga! It's very light-hearted and competitive and it's such a cute little slice of life. If you're a fan of FFXIV, I would recommend reading this! It'll be a great addition to my collection.
It’s fluff, but after the numerous times the game made me cry sometimes fluff is appreciated. It represents all your beloved (and hated) characters and their various quirks/personalities well but in a silly, wholesome AU. With all the jokes, in-game references, and easter eggs, it serves as a simple but cute little love letter for FFXIV fans. 🥹
Also I read this a year ago and I STILL chuckle over the “mommy” joke.
So this manga is just kind of a run of the mill highschool AU. Unless you've played Final Fantasy 14. Then it's a riot. I sat and laughed all the way through, especially whenever Magnai and Sadu showed up. Catching all the cameos of the minor characters is really the most entertaining part. That and Zeno's hair, which is fabulous in every panel. :-D
A charming story focused around the students of light and darkness within Eorzea Academy. Fans of the Final Fantasy 14 MMO will love to see the familiar faces of the characters they know and love. While the story focuses on the rivalry between the students of light and dark, it ends on a rather sweet note. The story is done as a one-shot with the potential for more volumes to come.

I’ve never indulged in fan service that was directed to something I’m so intimately familiar with and now I fully understand why folks love fan fiction so much lol. I was smiling the whole time reading. This was so much fun. Very very silly but I think that’s the whole idea. Points off for not enough Lalafell though. Tataru and Krile were lovely but I wanted more haha
Very cute slice of life story set in an alternate Eorzea. A much-needed breath of calm and light-hearted air after the heaviness of the Endwalker storyline. Not what I would call a must read, but definitely worth the time if you're a fan of the game. I really hope that they somehow pull a sequel out of this, would love to see more Eorzea Academy.
The artwork is very good, and the characters act similarly to their FFXIV versions for the most part, but the story was so low stakes (or no stakes) that it was almost irritating. This could have been almost any random “school” graphic novel and it wouldn’t have mattered. Really was expecting something different. Real shame.
It's no secret that I've been obsessed with FF14 the last few years, and to have found this at the library was phenomenal. It's so cute and funny, and the characterization is hilariously on point, this is one that I would absolutely recommend if you're a fan of the series, or wanting a reason to get into it, this is a good little introduction to the characters.
Very disappointed with this one, plot is paper thin and not in the physical sense. Appeal pretty much solely based on "look at these characters you like, but in high school". Art is kind of bland and unappealing. If you literally just want to see the Levielleur twins in high school and the scions as teachers, with only that satisfying you, then this will work just fine.
A fun, light-hearted modern AU featuring many fan-favourite NPCs from across the game's first 3 expacs, putting the characters through many of the expected Japanese school anime tropes such as: rivals, teamwork, field day, school festival, summer vacation, etc. Lots of amusing moments sure to delight players of the MMORPG.
This was a super fun read! Final Fantasy 14 has always been near and dear to my heart and taking my favorite characters from the game and writing extra stories with them was like getting an extra slice of cake! ❤️
Really fun au story that still manages to capture each character and their defining traits. It’s nice to just read a crazy high school story with all these characters I love and not see them suffer trauma. Bonus points for ysayle living her best life.
This was a fun little read! I've been a huge FF fan since I was a child. Pretty much have played all the games. This manga was a nice departure of the seriousness of many of the story lines, especially where I'm at in FFXIV Endwalker. It was fun seeing the characters let loose and relax a bit.
(I don't do star ratings because I don't think they are a fair assessment.)
Cute, funny, and creative. Emet-Selch as school counselor, Thancred as gym teacher, and Estinien as a student that constantly misses classes? Incredible. Adorable.
This was a really fun read, having Alisae and Alphinaud be the protagonists of this story was a great choice given the setting of this AU. I would’ve liked to see a cameo or portrayal of the Warrior of Light, but that’s a personal nitpick, and every other character had perfect characterization.
