“…I hate seeing someone unsatisfied with their food. It means they’re going unnurtured. Unfed.”
I am back to reading mystery books that are first in the series. So, if you have any recommendations, please feel free to share in the comments section below.
For the most part, I am not continuing with series beyond the first book.
Why?
To be honest, I have grown rather weary with mystery/thriller series. Either the actions are too predictable, or the stories feel too formulaic.
But there are some series I am still committed to at the moment. Any character created by Michael Connelly, especially Bosch or Mickey Haller, the Lincoln Lawyer; Louise Penny’s Inspector Armand Gamache; David Rosenfelt’s Andy Carpenter; and, Kimber Silver’s Kinsley and Sheriff Lincoln James. At present, I am always looking forward to reading their latest book, and don’t mind being on a long waitlist for them at my local library.
With this series, I was unfamiliar with it until I read one of my Goodreads friend review of book #6, the author’s professed finale, “Death and Dinuguan.” It sounded like a fun cozy, that was especially enticing with that cute dog on the cover! (Fortunately, the same dog is on this book cover, too.)
So, because the series appeared interesting, I chose to be a proponent of ‘start from the beginning’ of the series, if at all possible. And, so I am, with this book.
What I appreciated immediately was the ‘Author’s Note’ at the onset in which she shared several trigger warnings when she said…
“…I’d like to provide content warnings for indications of evidence planting and police intimidation, as well as drug use, fatphobia, racism, and domestic violence.”
She was also clear that this book “has a deliberately light and humorous tone, but it is still a work of crime fiction.”
With this information in hand, I now proceeded to read. Cautiously. Uncertain. Would the trigger warnings hold me back from enjoying the story?
No.
It doesn’t take long for readers to be tantalized by the delicious aroma and tastes of Tita Rosie’s restaurant. (Seriously, don’t read this book while hungry!)
“Chewy rice balls, tapioca pearls, jackfruit, purple yam, and saba banana cooked in sweet coconut milk. The best thing to eat on a cold day like this.”
But when an unfriendly critic dies after eating at Tita Rosie’s restaurant, could it be the food that killed him? Or, because of the bad reviews he has been writing? Or, something more sinister?
And, what of the landlord Ed who wants to remove Tita Rosie’s restaurant from his building? Why?
What will Lila, our narrator who is Tita Rosie’s niece, discover as she begins her own sleuthing investigation?
Oh, and don’t presume anything because of the book *title.
With the help of others (including the Calendar crew – aunties), and Lila’s cute dachshund dog, Longganisa, (the one featured on the book covers), this cozy mystery meets all the criteria for a sweet read…likable characters, a sense of humor, a viable setting, tension, twists and a full explanation ending. Although, it may be too easy and predictable for some, the clues laid out still allow readers to enjoy whether they will figure it out before the ending arrives.
