Play: The NYLON Book of Music

Rate this book
Residing at the forefront of cool since its inception, NYLON magazine is the authority on what is current when it comes to beauty, fashion, and music. Readers look to NYLON to learn about the newest trends and bands, as well as to see how music and fashion intertwine and influence each other. Play features the personal style of singers, bands, fans, and other innovators in today’s music universe: what they wear, who they listen to, what shows they go to, and what inspires their own music. Drawing from new interviews with dozens of popular musicians (such as Bjork, Meg White, M.I.A., Lily Allen, and Amy Winehouse), coverage from concerts and festivals around the world, and the inspiring looks of music icons past and present, Play presents music as a lifestyle, not as a pastime. Taking the style, irreverent tone, and fresh approach that NYLON is known for, Play is a must-have title for today’s music lover.

I really enjoyed this book. Play is a definitive list of women in rock and punk music. "Play" is divided into three sections. The first of which gives you a brief history and pictures of women who were the early pioneers in rock and punk music. The second section is composed of women who are currently making waves in rock and punk music. The third section features various every day women at concerts etc... giving their take on who their favorite artist are as well as they find most inspiring both music and style wise. This book contains many vivid pictures as well as lists of albums are rock lovers should own. As someone who doesn't listen to punk music and felt that Play helped broaden by knowledge on the subject.

I subscribe to NYLON magazine and I practically live off its pages for new styles and things, this book is no different to those into the indie music scene.

Love the fashion photography, and the overall lesson that women can make for pretty kickass rockstars, blah blah blah. And good for them for remembering to include Justine Frischmann and Tanya Donnelly. But if I wanted to get in on the secret of "how to be totally Ari Up," I'd rather get an education in her favorite music and cultural influences, not a tip for finding the right plaid, safety-pinned miniskirt.

This has so much information. From Ronnie Spector to the Watson Twins. I will always use it as reference.
