They say mated dragonborns can hear each other. I never believed it.
Not until I was trapped in an abandoned building, surrounded by flesh-eating monsters, terrified and alone. My body was failing, but my mind reached into the void, begging for someone to hear me.
Then the door burst open. The man who came for me was the last person I ever expected—my enemy. Strong, fearless, and endlessly captivating, Tynan works for the people who imprisoned me, and I hate him even more because I can’t stop staring whenever he shapeshifts. His dragon is black as night, with eyes that pierce my soul. He stopped beside me, and I already know I’ll fight him till my last breath.
In Talman, war rages between dragon clans. The last Queen struggles to hold her throne while a deadly disease spreads across the realm, turning her subjects into bloodthirsty beasts. Everyone says she’s too old to rule. Clans plot. Alliances break. And the hunt for a new Queen has begun…
Erm… the author properly did me dirty with this one.
The start was so slow I honestly thought I might just DNF and go make a cup of tea instead. I wasn’t sure if anything exciting was ever going to happen. But I stuck with it and thank God I did.
Because once it picked up, it really picked up. Easily one of the best books I’ve read this year, and trust me, I’ve powered through loads.
I absolutely adored Victor, Sol, Frid and Tynan. The group dynamic was top-tier and I loved flipping between their past and present. The banter? 10 out of 10. I was properly cackling at points.
Then Alina rocked up. Some mysterious job from the higher-ups, turns out she’s a prisoner, and I just knew things were about to kick off. And oh boy, did they.
But that twist at the end? I did not see that coming. Full-on “wait, WHAT?!” moment. I had to sit there blinking at the page like a confused meerkat. Brilliant.

Zombies and dragons. A combination I didn't know I needed until I read this book! Tynan is sent on a mission to retrieve a prisoner from a prison that has been overrun with crawlers as they call the zombies in this world. The prisoner is Alina. From the moment they meet there's a lot of pining. I liked the moments where they were on the run and fighting the most. Not knowing whether they were going to get out of a confrontation unscathed definitely had me holding my breath. Things were going so well for Tynan, Alina, and their group that I naively hoped that the uneasy feeling of dread would not come to fruition. The ending had me gasping for air, and I'll be anxiously awaiting the second part of their story.
A slowly developing plot. A stone cold “romance”. And an entire middle section that repeated the same boring monologue from both main characters.
Not enough information was given to really let me fall into the fantasy.
Lots of the miscommunication trope used in this one. But it wasn’t even miscommunication, it was straight up disinterest. Just when it seemed like someone was going to ask or tell something pertinent, the other would basically shrug, say “ok” and a new chapter with a time jump would happen. Like what?
The ending was almost interesting, but I can’t slog through an entirely new story. Thanks for making an entire read redundant in 5 pages.
Felt very YA, the romance felt stale, the relationships between all the characters was stilted and boring. It took me way too long to read and I skimmed the second half. Just very meh!
What a mesmerising detailed storyline I could immersed myself in of the four black dragons, Tynan, Frid, Victor and Sol, who were exciled by their clan when they became the council's Shadows to protect them and the crown from the flesh eating undead. To my surprise I learn in the last few days episode, the action, slow burn from enemies to lovers, the fatal dramatic event with Frid, was a vivid vision Ty had and his fated mate is no longer in Devil's Den. The hunt is on. He's has to find her. My 1st book by this author and I was impressed with her writing style, I'm geared up for the next book I received an advanced review copy and leave this review voluntary Thank you BookSirens
There's tons of action and adventure in this book particularly in the beginning. But for some reason, there's not a lot of heart or soul. As much as I wanted to invest emotion into the characters, they remained mostly hollow for much of this story.
The world-building was decent, but a bit bland. It's a lot of traveling in the beginning so while we do get to see quite a bit of the world it's not really enough to pique my interest and keep it.
There's a lot of repetition too. From conversations that get had, to the daily routines of fly, sleep, eat, fly sleep, eat. After a while, I couldn't take it anymore and began skimming conversations for new words or phrases I hadn't seen before.
And while I'm talking about the dialogue - the ellipses! WHY ARE THEY EVERYWHERE?! "You...can't have... a single... sentence... without this shit... getting... in the way." It makes everybody who talks this way sound like they're on drugs.
I wanted to love the characters and the found family dynamic between Sol, Frid, Victor and Tynan - and I tried, truly. But again, there's just not a lot of soul in any of their interactions. Some of their banter was pretty funny, but it felt like there was a Plexiglas barrier between me and any real connection to any of them.
I couldn't shake that feeling off, even as the romance - if you can call this story a romance - kicked off. I'll get to that in a second. First...
Alina is an interesting character in that her origins are largely a mystery, at least, in the beginning of the story. She wasn't terribly gripping from the start, though. We meet her as she's wasting away in a prison cell, and literally she's dreaming and waiting to die. Great. But when she's rescued, she still shows so little personality or desire to fight for life or curiosity about her situation or the world around her she might as well have been a cardboard cutout and not a real person.
I didn't feel much of anything for her - before or after she and Tynan begin their romance. I also didn't really understand the enemies-to-lovers aspect of this story. It didn't feel genuine. Probably because it only existed for about 3 minutes.
And I think that's mostly because neither of them are overly expressive. And they allow the miscommunication between them to simmer for no reason. It's really not even miscommunication! A lot of the time, they straight up don't show a ton of interest in each other. They talk, but never about anything important. And whenever you feel like - here it comes, they're finally gonna get to the good stuff - they shrug and walk away from each other leaving all of it unsaid.
This obviously frustrated the absolute crap out of me. It made this whole story feel very YA. These characters didn't comport themselves the way I expect adults should be able to.
Alina has a bad habit of asking these questions to herself that reek of insecurity and/or inexperience with love that sort of had my lip curling in disgust after a while. She comes across as so young and innocent even though she's supposedly not.
What should I do? Did I cross the line? Did I make him feel uncomfortable? Did he think that I offered to share the room because I wanted to have sex? Did he regret what happened between us? Did I make my feelings too obvious? Did I make a mistake?
And when they do get intimate? Eugh. The ellipses... "I...Um. We uh... I haven't..." Girl spit it out.
Her inability to explain what she wants, what she's even done in the past. Her shyness when it comes to being naked and doing stuff just grossed me right out. Why does she read like a 13 year old girl? I don't wanna read about a 13 year old having sex. VOMIT.
And SOOOO much of this book is just...relationship. I should be locked in, I should be aching for these characters! I should be quietly dying until they get together.
Instead. I was mostly just bored and slightly annoyed.
Lastly, there's a lot I could say about the ending. It sort of makes the effort of reading the rest of the book pointless. But to be frank, I think for it to have the appropriate impact, I would have had to have a better connection to the characters. I didn't particularly find the cliffhanger very enticing. I don't enjoy sequels where only the POV shifts and we have to read the same book again from a new POV. That seems to be where things are going and I'm just not interested in continuing.
The story concept is great. Post-apocalyptic zombie infested world where dragon-shifters exist? Yes, please. It's the execution that didn't quite get there for me. I'm sure this is for someone. I had high hopes going in. Sadly, it just didn't do it for me.
This is a fun, fast-paced fantasy that offers plenty of unique elements - dragon shifters and zombies! The found family vibe is warm and genuine and the characters—especially Tynan—are fun. The world-building is imaginative. This is a great escapism romantasy read.
Tynan, in particular, stands out as the most interesting character; his complex nature and the hints of vulnerability are compelling. However, his tendency to simply wander away when challenges arise was frustrating at times and detracted from his potential depth.
I wish the zombie elements had remained as prominent throughout the book, as they were one of its most unique features. Additionally, while the world-building is creative, it sometimes feels a bit shallow.
Overall, Firebond is a fun, engaging read with plenty of memorable moments and unique ideas. It's a worthwhile pick if you're in the mood for something light and adventurous with a twist of the unusual.
Thanks to Booksirens for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
I loved the story line, the suspense and the excellent twists especially towards the end of the story.
POV of both Tynan and Alina . The story reads , sometimes, as if told by a storyteller. There is steam to the romance but much later in the story, which I also liked.
The worldbuilding was very good. I could empathize about Tynan's past. Which was revealed slowly throughout the story. The world they lived in and the constant struggle to survive.
I liked the personalities of the motley crew of dragons who followed Tynan. Each brought a different perspective to the story. I also liked the epiphany Tynan had about them and himself.
Well done and looking forward to the second book. I received an advance review copy for free via Booksiren , and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I am so so mad with Lina for this book (Lina if you see this ILY really but I'm still mad at you haha)
I was obsessed from the start - zombies and dragons with a found family vibe. Some spice and romance. It had it all. Until the end. Why. Why on earth would you do that to me. I am heartbroken. No! Naughty!
I LOVED Tynan and Alina's relationship and how it developed, it was done so naturally and I was hooked. And the fact they are all dragon shifters was awesome.
A little bit of adventure and a sprinkle of politics. Amazing.
Not over that end though. I genuinely threw my kindle across the bed. **sulks until next book**
This was something else, dragons and zombies at the same time. And then make the dragons humans that shapeshift which I felt made them badass!
There is an amazing story here, and I’m sure that upcoming books will elaborate and give us the whole beautiful world. In Firebond we meet Tynan and his crew of dragonborns that during an assignment come across Alina, a frail looking human that is anything but.
There is friendship and romance, tension and banter as well as fighting zombies and zombie dragons…
I really enjoyed the friendships in this group, how they have each others backs unconditionally. And I loved that Alina is not a fragile girl just because she grew up in another place. She is fierce and stubborn and loyal.
I’m not very familiar with world building etc but I could really feel that there is an intricate world and history in this story that will be crucial for the development for the rest of the story.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I’m really looking forward to read what’s coming next!
Zombies and dragons? Need I say more, so unique. As always, Ravenhill’s writing in this book just speaks to me, she has a way with words that makes her books flow and be full of emotion. And some of her sentences really spoke to me, so beautifully heartbreaking and poetic. I enjoyed the found family in this book so much. And the aesthetic was good. Admittedly, the ending was a bit unsatisfactory (in the best and worst way combined), hooking but not my fav, though that may change once the next book is out.
Zombies & Dragons oh my!! A combination I never knew i needed. So many unexplained things I still need answers to... how did Alina get where she is will she return? And poor Tynan having to suffer his whole childhood, the only good he found his chosen family and I need more of them too!! How did this outbreak occur?? I need more!! I also love how this is separate story of Alina yet also will tie into her previous books I'm sure, I hope!!
Wow! Lina did an amazing job writing this book! I love the MMC Tynan so much! He was dark but kind to those he loves. Alina was perfect! She could have been a bit stronger to have completed Tynan a little better. From the moment Tynan and Alina meet to the very end has you truly questioning what is going to happen next! I don’t want to say to much but the ending will leave you speechless!!! I cannot wait for the next book!
Picture How to Train your Dragon meets The Walking Dead, but they are dragon shifters, not riders! Throw in a dash of enemies to lovers and forced proximity, and that's this book! Oh, and right when you think you'll know how it ends, Lina says, "Hang on, let me switch it up on you!" 10/10 will be adding to my physical shelf!!
WOW! This book has it all romance, adventure, battles, dragons, and zombies!! I'm here for it. Great story didn't want to put it down. Well written easy to follow along. The descriptive writing makes it easy to imagine the world. The characters are interesting and relatable. Was not expecting that ending! Ready for what's next!
What the f@@@! First of all , dragons, zombies, AND dragon zombies. There's a combination I didn't know I needed for my repertoire! Lol Second of all, the twist!! I was loving the development of the relationships in this 1st book ( maybe that should have been a warning. Things were going to smoothly). I got to the last couple of pages, and it took everything in me not to scream and throw my Kindle. How quickly can I download the next book....🤔
I went in for the dragons, and stayed for the zombies, secrets, and the addictive bond forming between two characters from completely different worlds.
From the moment Tynan’s mission to retrieve a prisoner turned into a battle for survival, I was hooked. Crawlers (undead hordes), collapsing fortresses, a mysterious girl who’s not what she seems… this book throws you headfirst into the chaos, and it does not let up.
Alina is a fantastic protagonist—strong, isolated, and full of inner fire (literally). Being the only dragon shifter raised among humans, she’s thrust into a realm where dragonborns rule… and not everyone is happy to see her. That “chosen one but with trauma” energy? Loved it. Watching her find unlikely allies and the slow, simmering connection with Tynan gave me major found-family and fated-mates vibes.
This book gave me everything I crave in a fantasy YA:
A richly imagined world with dragons, undead monsters, and political intrigue
Romance that builds naturally and burns slow but hot
A heroine with secrets that shake the world around her
Emotional stakes and adrenaline-pumping action
AND an ending that absolutely wrecked me
Seriously. That cliffhanger?? Why. How. I screamed.
If you're into: 🐉 Dragons 🧟♂️ Zombies 🫂 Found family 💔 Romantic tension 🔥 A dash of spice 😱 Twist endings that leave you clawing for the sequel
Then Firebond will light you up in all the best ways. I immediately dove into Bloodbond and I'm still not over it.
What happens when you mix zombies, dragon shifters, deadly missions, and forbidden romance? You get Firebond a fast-paced fantasy adventure I didn’t know I needed.
Tynan's mission to retrieve a prisoner from a crumbling fortress spirals into so much more when he meets Alina a seemingly fragile girl with hidden strength and dangerous secrets. I loved how their relationship unfolds naturally with tension, banter, and undeniable chemistry.
The world-building is immersive, with the perfect balance of action, found family vibes, romance, and political intrigue. But fair warning the ending left me gasping for air and absolutely desperate for the sequel.
Zombies? Dragons? Emotional damage? Firebond delivers on all fronts.
Highly recommended for fans of Fourth Wings, Game of Thrones, or anyone craving a fantasy with spice, action, and heartbreak.

I loved the world building… Dragons and zombies, who would think of that?? Weird but perfect 😍 I love Alina's story and how she gains confidence in her abilities and fights for what she wants.
-I was very intrigued from the start. The plot was interesting and fast paced so I was able to read through it quite quickly. There were some little quirks here and there but nothing too drastic of note.
-I liked the characters. The found family in them was great and I think that may be my favourite aspect of the book overall. Alina felt a bit bland at first but her character did build up as she got more and more comfortable with Tynan and the others. I liked Tynan. He was great. The relationship was cute but once it turned sexual I got kind of uninterested in it.
-I don’t know how I feel about the ending. In a way it was good because the plot definitely twisted and it was so unexpected that I could have almost loved it. But the events of what actually happened was a complete downhill for me. I hated what happened and what that will entail for the sequel.
This is the second series this week that is using the same formula.
Just why?
Do readers want to re-read a whole book with miner changes.... No! I can't stand repetition. My mind was already following one plot. Reading about the same characters doing things differently and calling it book 2 is not my cup of tea. I rarely ever read a book twice. So from the way this book ended to the reviews for book 2. I won't be reading further.
It is an actual shame though the first 50% of this book was really engaging. A post apocalyptic world with dragons and zombies. The right formula to pull readers in, then the writing style killed it for me.
You're telling me the entire book is null? They really pulled an 'it was all a dream' on me.
I was flabbergasted, one may say, when literally every character just DIED by the end of Ch44, which in my head didn't make sense because there are two books left? So, my assumption was Alina would survive the entire ordeal unscathed, and Tynan would have some nasty burns and a truckload of new trauma after finally healing from his abandonment issues. Tough luck, I guess.
Then Ch45 rolls around, Tynan is in one piece, and I rationalise, Alina must have developed some miraculous healing powers connected to her red dragon identity when faced with her mate's death, or a magical shield of some sort. At least he only has to deal with the emotional pain now.
And then Frid, Victor, and Sol pop out, and I'm so deep in denial of what's coming that I just reason Alina has the powers of life and death, that's why she's so special, and she revived the whole crew. And then the bomb drops. Everything since Ch3 has been a motherfreaking dream.
Or vision of their potential future together if he had gone into the prison to look for her, if we want to use the correct terminology.
So basically, when we start reading book 2, the events of book 1 are irrelevant to literally everyone except Tynan. The found family doesn't know and accept Alina, Victor and Frid never revealed their feelings for one another, Tynan hasn't reconciled with his brother, Sol... not much has changed for him to be fair, except that he's alive. What the heck. WHAT. THE. HECK.
What can I say author, you got me, I was fooled. But at what cost?
Anyway, I'll stop ranting about that and focus on other aspects of the story:
1. I love a good zombie apocalypse, and I love a good romantasy. I have a pen, I have a apple, Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen. Simple as that. I thought it was fresh, love a bit of a genre melting pot situation. But I was a bit disappointed because when they reached Darragh, which was 50% into the novel, we didn't see another zombie until the shit-show that went down in Ch44, 94% into the book.
At the start of the novel, especially after the first two chapters which had a lot of emphasis on the zombie situation, I thought it would play a more of a relevant role, which it did, until that halfway point. Afterwards it was pushed on the backburner, Sol went to mind his business, and the two main couples just had angst until they finally got together.
2. I think Gabrielle was an unnecessary addition, just a pointless source of conflict. She was fine as a concept, it was interesting that they both had loved someone in the past and they were dealing with different sorts of grief regarding the loss of those relationships, but she didn't have to actually show up.
3. I love Frid and Victor. Really hoping they get together again in book 2, if not there will be issues.
I was going to rate it 3 ⭑ but I do think from that half-way point the story became rather stagnant, and then suddenly everyone died in literally half a chapter, so talk about whiplash.
I think it just needed better pacing, but I'll learn to embrace the ending. I hope.
Really enjoyed the story! I’m not sure how to start. So many things going through my mind! I can say OMG! The. Ending!
😮💨 ok. To start. I was in a reading slump. This made that spark reignite. It was what I needed. I do recommend reading it. It seems to be a great in between. The characters are pretty well written, despite it being fast. The story flows well and quick. While still keeping us informed enough for the plot. It’s not heavy on romance until the main characters get together. The attraction is there though out. The spice is mild and not super detailed.
I had my moments of awwww, of WTF, wait weren’t they?, how?, eeeeeee, thank goodnesses, suspense. It does slow its pace towards the end, action wise. Then BAM the ending!
The side characters were awesome. Sol was silent but memorable. The other two, Edrn and Vic, were like kids! Their banter was cute. I want to say almost annoying but I can’t! It went really well!. They did annoy the group by bickering 😆 But you never know what really hides behind bickering and playful banter.
The Fl iiiiisssss ok. Her actions kinda make sense for being hidden away and all. Her character is definitely still developing. The main lead is cool. He’s very protective of his group and the Fl (of course). But needs to do better with communication. He’s grumpy and serious. The author sheds some light to that. Enough to keep us engaged in the reading. I really like that. It’s almost like the author is teasing us by giving us just enough. I actually have a theory on that. Given how the book ended. BUT it won’t be confirmed until I continue the series.
If my theory is wrong, character placement was a little off at times and a few things were not consistent. Nothing that was a deal breaker for me but may be noticeable.
Over all great read! Forced proximity, one bed, mates.
I found myself grappling with a whirlwind of emotions while reading this book—some elements truly captivated me, yet others didn't fully connect.
The characters, without a doubt, were the shining jewels of this tale. Alina, in particular, stole my heart with her remarkable resilience. Through every challenge she faced, her strength and determination shone brightly, making her a character I couldn't help but root for.
Tynon, our brooding hero, brings a complex depth to the story, complemented by a diverse cast of friends. Frid, the fiercely independent girl with a fiery spirit, adds an intriguing dynamic; Victor, the lovable jokester, brings lightheartedness and laughter; while Sol, the strong and silent type, provides a comforting presence amidst the chaos.
These characters felt like real people to me, I became deeply invested in their journeys.
However, I felt the book was too brief. I longed for it to explore the richly imagined world in greater detail. So many questions lingered in my mind, and the conclusion left me utterly stunned. I never anticipated such a twist, which amplified my excitement and curiosity.
There were a few minor editing errors that caught my eye and some clunky transitions, but they were so subtle that they barely hindered my enjoyment of the narrative.
Overall, I found myself utterly engrossed in this imaginative world. The characters were a delightful mix, and their adventures tugged at my heartstrings. Now, I’m left eagerly anticipating the arrival of the next installment!
Zombies and Dragon Shifters. Oh my. A combo no one thought they needed until the brilliant Lina Ravenhill wrote it!! This story has you drawn in from the beginning. Her words were so captivating, I was shooketh and looking over my shoulder just in case a crawler made his way out of this ARC !!
Tynan, Frid, Victor, and Solomon are on mission to retrieve a prisoner. Mission impossible bc there’s a virus spreading, an outbreak of crawlers. YES ZOMBIES!!
Alina is a prisoner in a high security prison. For a crime she did or didn’t commit…?? 🤔 Let me tell you, she’s scaring me right now. Her delulu is NOT the solulu. Alina is not dreaming and not fully awake, but those hallucinations.. 👀
Alina doesn’t remember why she was imprisoned, but she’s certain that she doesn’t want to be in another cell. Tynan is questioning Why do they need her at the capital? Who is she? She’s wearing light blue, silk shoes and lace. Not many people wore that unless they’re of high birth. 👸🏻
This story holds secrets. Ones that will have you questioning as you read. This was unpredictable, plot driven and jaw dropping! So grab your pint of Kvass and read this breathtaking fantasy. It will NOT disappoint.
Dragon shifters + zombies + fated mates + lost princess = a helluva adventure
I think that this book was an easy and quick paced read- a good way to start my 2026 book journey! I really didn’t think that I would like it at first because of the zombie aspect, but it didn’t overwhelm the reading experience and I think it was a nice touch. What I will say though is that the scope on this seems quite epic and I wish that it would start to whittle down and show the direction it would flow in. At times I just kept wondering how the characters are going to progress.
The ending for me felt a little rushed and then the very very ending had me absolutely SHOCKED. I was reading and thinking that there was no way that certain things happened and then you reach the end and go, “oh. My. God”.
As I am writing this I am almost to the end of book 2, I think that it is very different from book 1 so far. I will report more on the review for book 2, but as of right now, once I complete book 2 I am not so sure that I will be progressing with the rest of the series. This is due to a few factors, like the above that I mentioned where the scope seems to not be narrowing at all and I fear that the storyline is getting a little lost for me.
