They say mated dragonborns can hear each other. I never believed it.
Not until I was trapped in an abandoned building, surrounded by flesh-eating monsters, terrified and alone. My body was failing, but my mind reached into the void, begging for someone to hear me.
Then the door burst open. The man who came for me was the last person I ever expected—my enemy. Strong, fearless, and endlessly captivating, Tynan works for the people who imprisoned me, and I hate him even more because I can’t stop staring whenever he shapeshifts. His dragon is black as night, with eyes that pierce my soul. He stopped beside me, and I already know I’ll fight him till my last breath.
In Talman, war rages between dragon clans. The last Queen struggles to hold her throne while a deadly disease spreads across the realm, turning her subjects into bloodthirsty beasts. Everyone says she’s too old to rule. Clans plot. Alliances break. And the hunt for a new Queen has begun…
Erm… the author properly did me dirty with this one.
The start was so slow I honestly thought I might just DNF and go make a cup of tea instead. I wasn’t sure if anything exciting was ever going to happen. But I stuck with it and thank God I did.
Because once it picked up, it really picked up. Easily one of the best books I’ve read this year, and trust me, I’ve powered through loads.
I absolutely adored Victor, Sol, Frid and Tynan. The group dynamic was top-tier and I loved flipping between their past and present. The banter? 10 out of 10. I was properly cackling at points.
Then Alina rocked up. Some mysterious job from the higher-ups, turns out she’s a prisoner, and I just knew things were about to kick off. And oh boy, did they.
But that twist at the end? I did not see that coming. Full-on “wait, WHAT?!” moment. I had to sit there blinking at the page like a confused meerkat. Brilliant.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Second read (audiobook): 3.5/5 stars This is a fun, fast-paced romantasy with some genuinely unique elements that set it apart from the crowd. The found family vibe that develops as these dragon shifters drag their prisoner (our main character) back to their kingdom is fun and exactly the kind of dynamic I will always show up for. The world building is imaginative and the setting feels unique, which I appreciated.
Tynan is the standout still. He's complex and compelling with these hints of vulnerability underneath everything that made me want more of him. That said, his tendency to just... wander off when things get difficult was still frustrating. He has so much potential depth and it occasionally gets in its own way.
My biggest complaint is the zombie element disappearing from the story, to some extent. I stand by my previous review about that. The creature elements are one of the most unique and interesting things this book does and I really wish it had leaned into that harder and longer. When the story pivots away from it I felt the loss. That combination of dragon shifter romance and zombie horror is so specific and so fun.
It's a little shallow in places and doesn't always dig as deep as it could. But as escapism romantasy goes, this is a genuinely enjoyable ride with memorable moments and a found family I loved spending time with. The audiobook also elevated the experience considerably and earned another half star.
Thanks to the author and R&R Tours for the complimentary ALC! This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
First Read: This is a fun, fast-paced fantasy that offers plenty of unique elements - dragon shifters and zombies! The found family vibe is warm and genuine and the characters—especially Tynan—are fun. The world-building is imaginative. This is a great escapism romantasy read.
I wish the zombie elements had remained as prominent throughout the book, as they were one of its most unique features. Additionally, while the world-building is creative, it sometimes feels a bit shallow.
Overall, Firebond is a fun, engaging read with plenty of memorable moments and unique ideas. It's a worthwhile pick if you're in the mood for something light and adventurous with a twist of the unusual.
Thanks to Booksirens for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
A slowly developing plot. A stone cold “romance”. And an entire middle section that repeated the same boring monologue from both main characters.
Not enough information was given to really let me fall into the fantasy.
Lots of the miscommunication trope used in this one. But it wasn’t even miscommunication, it was straight up disinterest. Just when it seemed like someone was going to ask or tell something pertinent, the other would basically shrug, say “ok” and a new chapter with a time jump would happen. Like what?
The ending was almost interesting, but I can’t slog through an entirely new story. Thanks for making an entire read redundant in 5 pages.
Felt very YA, the romance felt stale, the relationships between all the characters was stilted and boring. It took me way too long to read and I skimmed the second half. Just very meh!
First Thank you to @Podium for this ALC, I'm truly grateful. Now whoever said dragons and zombies shouldn't be in a book together Ms. Lina Ravenhill said hold my pen and I'll prove you wrong, and she did. She made the idea that this works. This has fated mates, Found family; Familial trauma but what got me to my current state of WTF did I just read was the last chapter. So keep that in mind and it ends on a cliffhanger if I even have to say that. This was a good read and yes I'll be getting g book 2 because who wouldn't want to know what happens.
There's tons of action and adventure in this book particularly in the beginning. But for some reason, there's not a lot of heart or soul. As much as I wanted to invest emotion into the characters, they remained mostly hollow for much of this story.
The world-building was decent, but a bit bland. It's a lot of traveling in the beginning so while we do get to see quite a bit of the world it's not really enough to pique my interest and keep it.
There's a lot of repetition too. From conversations that get had, to the daily routines of fly, sleep, eat, fly sleep, eat. After a while, I couldn't take it anymore and began skimming conversations for new words or phrases I hadn't seen before.
And while I'm talking about the dialogue - the ellipses! WHY ARE THEY EVERYWHERE?! "You...can't have... a single... sentence... without this shit... getting... in the way." It makes everybody who talks this way sound like they're on drugs.
I wanted to love the characters and the found family dynamic between Sol, Frid, Victor and Tynan - and I tried, truly. But again, there's just not a lot of soul in any of their interactions. Some of their banter was pretty funny, but it felt like there was a Plexiglas barrier between me and any real connection to any of them.
I couldn't shake that feeling off, even as the romance - if you can call this story a romance - kicked off. I'll get to that in a second. First...
Alina is an interesting character in that her origins are largely a mystery, at least, in the beginning of the story. She wasn't terribly gripping from the start, though. We meet her as she's wasting away in a prison cell, and literally she's dreaming and waiting to die. Great. But when she's rescued, she still shows so little personality or desire to fight for life or curiosity about her situation or the world around her she might as well have been a cardboard cutout and not a real person.
I didn't feel much of anything for her - before or after she and Tynan begin their romance. I also didn't really understand the enemies-to-lovers aspect of this story. It didn't feel genuine. Probably because it only existed for about 3 minutes.
And I think that's mostly because neither of them are overly expressive. And they allow the miscommunication between them to simmer for no reason. It's really not even miscommunication! A lot of the time, they straight up don't show a ton of interest in each other. They talk, but never about anything important. And whenever you feel like - here it comes, they're finally gonna get to the good stuff - they shrug and walk away from each other leaving all of it unsaid.
This obviously frustrated the absolute crap out of me. It made this whole story feel very YA. These characters didn't comport themselves the way I expect adults should be able to.
Alina has a bad habit of asking these questions to herself that reek of insecurity and/or inexperience with love that sort of had my lip curling in disgust after a while. She comes across as so young and innocent even though she's supposedly not.
What should I do? Did I cross the line? Did I make him feel uncomfortable? Did he think that I offered to share the room because I wanted to have sex? Did he regret what happened between us? Did I make my feelings too obvious? Did I make a mistake?
And when they do get intimate? Eugh. The ellipses... "I...Um. We uh... I haven't..." Girl spit it out.
Her inability to explain what she wants, what she's even done in the past. Her shyness when it comes to being naked and doing stuff just grossed me right out. Why does she read like a 13 year old girl? I don't wanna read about a 13 year old having sex. VOMIT.
And SOOOO much of this book is just...relationship. I should be locked in, I should be aching for these characters! I should be quietly dying until they get together.
Instead. I was mostly just bored and slightly annoyed.
Lastly, there's a lot I could say about the ending. It sort of makes the effort of reading the rest of the book pointless. But to be frank, I think for it to have the appropriate impact, I would have had to have a better connection to the characters. I didn't particularly find the cliffhanger very enticing. I don't enjoy sequels where only the POV shifts and we have to read the same book again from a new POV. That seems to be where things are going and I'm just not interested in continuing.
The story concept is great. Post-apocalyptic zombie infested world where dragon-shifters exist? Yes, please. It's the execution that didn't quite get there for me. I'm sure this is for someone. I had high hopes going in. Sadly, it just didn't do it for me.
This is the second series this week that is using the same formula.
Just why?
Do readers want to re-read a whole book with miner changes.... No! I can't stand repetition. My mind was already following one plot. Reading about the same characters doing things differently and calling it book 2 is not my cup of tea. I rarely ever read a book twice. So from the way this book ended to the reviews for book 2. I won't be reading further.
It is an actual shame though the first 50% of this book was really engaging. A post apocalyptic world with dragons and zombies. The right formula to pull readers in, then the writing style killed it for me.
Zombies and dragons. A combination I didn't know I needed until I read this book! Tynan is sent on a mission to retrieve a prisoner from a prison that has been overrun with crawlers as they call the zombies in this world. The prisoner is Alina. From the moment they meet there's a lot of pining. I liked the moments where they were on the run and fighting the most. Not knowing whether they were going to get out of a confrontation unscathed definitely had me holding my breath. Things were going so well for Tynan, Alina, and their group that I naively hoped that the uneasy feeling of dread would not come to fruition. The ending had me gasping for air, and I'll be anxiously awaiting the second part of their story.
Exciting military intrigue dragon shifter romantasy! You get a dragon shifter found family working together to transport a prison. She’s fiery and might not be who she seems, which made for a fun transport mission! The world building is rich and dark. This is a romance/yearning focused story with a great plot to go along with it. The angsty yearning was a fun time with fated mates feels, and brings back all those angsty YA feels I always enjoyed, but with adult characters. That ending was interesting and not what I saw coming 😅 I really enjoyed the bigger world building in the first part of the book, and the bigger romance focus for the rest of the book was a fun time.
He is the broody dragon shifter of the enemy clan. She is the fiery prisoner he’s charged with transporting. Yearning burns, and motives change.
❤️🔥 Broody MMC ❤️🔥 Dragon Shifter MMC ❤️🔥 Prisoner FMC ❤️🔥 Mysterious Identity ❤️🔥 Enemies to Lovers ❤️🔥 Angsty Yearning ❤️🔥 Found Family ❤️🔥 Trauma Past
What a mesmerising detailed storyline I could immersed myself in of the four black dragons, Tynan, Frid, Victor and Sol, who were exciled by their clan when they became the council's Shadows to protect them and the crown from the flesh eating undead. To my surprise I learn in the last few days episode, the action, slow burn from enemies to lovers, the fatal dramatic event with Frid, was a vivid vision Ty had and his fated mate is no longer in Devil's Den. The hunt is on. He's has to find her. My 1st book by this author and I was impressed with her writing style, I'm geared up for the next book I received an advanced review copy and leave this review voluntary Thank you BookSirens
I had the pleasure of listening to an ALC of Firebond by Lina Ravenhill, and overall, this was such an engaging and entertaining experience! From the very start, I was completely intrigued by the unique blend of zombies and shifters. It’s not often you see those elements combined, and it immediately pulled me into the world and made me want to know how everything would unfold. The atmosphere was tense, and there was this constant sense of danger that kept me hooked. While there were a few moments that felt a little dragged out for me personally, the action and suspense more than made up for it. When things picked up, they really picked up. I found myself fully invested, eager to see what would happen next and how the characters would navigate such a chaotic and dangerous world. I also have to give a huge shoutout to the narrators because they were absolutely fantastic! They brought so much life and emotion to the story, making it even easier to connect with the characters and stay immersed in the audiobook experience. But that ending? 😭 I was not prepared for it to just end like that! 🤣 It definitely left me wanting more and needing answers. Overall, Firebond was a thrilling listen with a fascinating premise, strong narration, and plenty of suspense. I’m really looking forward to seeing where this story goes next!
This was a fun dragon shifter romantasy! More of a 2.5 rounded up.
Quick plot: Alina is a prisoner that everyone is after. She has some long lost magic because of her family and kingdom ties. She is rescued/re-captured by Tynon and crew to be taken to the bad guy kingdom. Except Tynon can’t do this to her. Something is between Alina and Tynon, but they can’t seem to figure it out. Alina goes to Tynon and crew’s clan lands and learns to control her dragon shifter powers all while developing deeper feeling for Tynon. OH there are also zombies? And dragon zombies? Casual.
Thoughts: I think this had a strong start, but I lost a lot of buy in during the middle. There wasn’t enough story to make me feel interested, the plot didn’t capture me. The romance that built between the main characters didn’t interest me either. The dragon mate plot didn’t feel flushed out. Ultimately, there were many little plot points brought up but not enough story to develop them enough. As far as audio narration goes, I had a great time! I really enjoy a dual narration and the narrators did a great job!
Humm, this was interesting. I really enjoyed the beginning with the whole walking dead meets dragon shifters vibes. Midway it became more romance focused but that felt rushed and kind of artificial. It may be that the world building needed to be a bit more clearer or that the characters are still very surface level and I couldn't get fully invested in them.
The side character, especially, had very little depth. The bickering felt a bit juvenile (maybe this contributes with some people saying that it reads like a YA book?). My personal pet peeve is the use of "Girls" to refer to grown adult women that are literal dragon shifters and/or warriors.
Regarding the ending... I'm still not sure how I feel.. I was kind of surprised as to where the story was going and then BAM, psych! It definitely catches your attention and makes you wonder about book 2.
Regarding the audiobook, Elizabeth Russell and Lee Samuels did a spectacular job. Their narration was able to keep me engaged in parts where the story slowed down or became a bit repetitive.
Thanks to the Author and Hello Blush for the ALC. All comments are my own.
I loved the story line, the suspense and the excellent twists especially towards the end of the story.
POV of both Tynan and Alina . The story reads , sometimes, as if told by a storyteller. There is steam to the romance but much later in the story, which I also liked.
The worldbuilding was very good. I could empathize about Tynan's past. Which was revealed slowly throughout the story. The world they lived in and the constant struggle to survive.
I liked the personalities of the motley crew of dragons who followed Tynan. Each brought a different perspective to the story. I also liked the epiphany Tynan had about them and himself.
Well done and looking forward to the second book. I received an advance review copy for free via Booksiren , and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I am so so mad with Lina for this book (Lina if you see this ILY really but I'm still mad at you haha)
I was obsessed from the start - zombies and dragons with a found family vibe. Some spice and romance. It had it all. Until the end. Why. Why on earth would you do that to me. I am heartbroken. No! Naughty!
I LOVED Tynan and Alina's relationship and how it developed, it was done so naturally and I was hooked. And the fact they are all dragon shifters was awesome.
A little bit of adventure and a sprinkle of politics. Amazing.
Not over that end though. I genuinely threw my kindle across the bed. **sulks until next book**
This was something else, dragons and zombies at the same time. And then make the dragons humans that shapeshift which I felt made them badass!
There is an amazing story here, and I’m sure that upcoming books will elaborate and give us the whole beautiful world. In Firebond we meet Tynan and his crew of dragonborns that during an assignment come across Alina, a frail looking human that is anything but.
There is friendship and romance, tension and banter as well as fighting zombies and zombie dragons…
I really enjoyed the friendships in this group, how they have each others backs unconditionally. And I loved that Alina is not a fragile girl just because she grew up in another place. She is fierce and stubborn and loyal.
I’m not very familiar with world building etc but I could really feel that there is an intricate world and history in this story that will be crucial for the development for the rest of the story.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I’m really looking forward to read what’s coming next!
Zombies and dragons? Need I say more, so unique. As always, Ravenhill’s writing in this book just speaks to me, she has a way with words that makes her books flow and be full of emotion. And some of her sentences really spoke to me, so beautifully heartbreaking and poetic. I enjoyed the found family in this book so much. And the aesthetic was good. Admittedly, the ending was a bit unsatisfactory (in the best and worst way combined), hooking but not my fav, though that may change once the next book is out.
Oh my good lord, that ending! I did NOT ever see that coming.
I will be honest here and say I almost DNF this book within the first 10% but I am so glad I stuck with it. It was amazing. The only reason I can give for even thinking of not finishing was that my mood was off. I decided to try a bit more because I was aware of that, and I was NOT disappointed.
This story will take you for a ride. You expect to dislike some characters just to cheer for them and be heartbroken by events.
The FMC is gentle but also a bada$$ who is tired of being forced into situations against her will. There are some wild surprises along the way and banter. Yearning 🤌🏽 Found family. Mates. Magic. Dragons. The undead. Betrayal. Slow burn. Jealousy. Protective. And of course those who are greedy for power and willing to murder to keep it.
Zombies & Dragons oh my!! A combination I never knew i needed. So many unexplained things I still need answers to... how did Alina get where she is will she return? And poor Tynan having to suffer his whole childhood, the only good he found his chosen family and I need more of them too!! How did this outbreak occur?? I need more!! I also love how this is separate story of Alina yet also will tie into her previous books I'm sure, I hope!!
Wow! Lina did an amazing job writing this book! I love the MMC Tynan so much! He was dark but kind to those he loves. Alina was perfect! She could have been a bit stronger to have completed Tynan a little better. From the moment Tynan and Alina meet to the very end has you truly questioning what is going to happen next! I don’t want to say to much but the ending will leave you speechless!!! I cannot wait for the next book!
Picture How to Train your Dragon meets The Walking Dead, but they are dragon shifters, not riders! Throw in a dash of enemies to lovers and forced proximity, and that's this book! Oh, and right when you think you'll know how it ends, Lina says, "Hang on, let me switch it up on you!" 10/10 will be adding to my physical shelf!!
WOW! This book has it all romance, adventure, battles, dragons, and zombies!! I'm here for it. Great story didn't want to put it down. Well written easy to follow along. The descriptive writing makes it easy to imagine the world. The characters are interesting and relatable. Was not expecting that ending! Ready for what's next!
What the f@@@! First of all , dragons, zombies, AND dragon zombies. There's a combination I didn't know I needed for my repertoire! Lol Second of all, the twist!! I was loving the development of the relationships in this 1st book ( maybe that should have been a warning. Things were going to smoothly). I got to the last couple of pages, and it took everything in me not to scream and throw my Kindle. How quickly can I download the next book....🤔
"They say mated dragonborns can hear each other. I never believed it."
I didn't know I needed a book with dragons AND zombies, but here we are!
This story is set in a gritty, war-torn world where a deadly disease is spreading, which had me hooked right away. It starts with action and adventure, with the narrators making me feel immersed in this world, as we're introduced to Alina and Tynan. I loved the tension and build up of their relationship! While the story dips a bit in the middle, the ending was just... wow!! The twists were very unexpected and I am on the edge of my seat waiting to start the next book!
Genre: Dragons/ Fantasy Romance • Fated Mates • Forbidden Love • Forced Proximity • Slow burn • Angsty • Dystopian • Found Family • Tragic Past
The ONLY reason I rated it 4 stars is because of the ending. Like whaaaat!?!? That was crazy!
Zombies and dragons. And zombie dragons!!! 😱 This was a great story and I love mates so I knew this would be good.
Our FMC, Alina, is locked away and then trapped as the building is abandoned after an attack. She doesn’t think she’ll ever get out, but then the one person who shouldn’t be there comes and saves her. As our MCs, Alina and Tynan, learn more about each other and what is happening in their world they grow closer. They each begin having visions with no explanation, but all they know is there’s something pulling them towards each other. Our side characters are wonderful! And when some got hurt in a certain part of the story I was soooo very sad! Some parts of the story feel a bit YA, definitely due to the FMC being locked away for so long. I do feel like some parts dragged a bit, but that could be due to the narrators as I listened to this book. That is my main reason for not rating it 5 ⭐️
Thank you to Lina and R&R Booktours for my ALC 🫶🏼 I can’t wait to continue this story!
I went in for the dragons, and stayed for the zombies, secrets, and the addictive bond forming between two characters from completely different worlds.
From the moment Tynan’s mission to retrieve a prisoner turned into a battle for survival, I was hooked. Crawlers (undead hordes), collapsing fortresses, a mysterious girl who’s not what she seems… this book throws you headfirst into the chaos, and it does not let up.
Alina is a fantastic protagonist—strong, isolated, and full of inner fire (literally). Being the only dragon shifter raised among humans, she’s thrust into a realm where dragonborns rule… and not everyone is happy to see her. That “chosen one but with trauma” energy? Loved it. Watching her find unlikely allies and the slow, simmering connection with Tynan gave me major found-family and fated-mates vibes.
This book gave me everything I crave in a fantasy YA:
A richly imagined world with dragons, undead monsters, and political intrigue
Romance that builds naturally and burns slow but hot
A heroine with secrets that shake the world around her
Emotional stakes and adrenaline-pumping action
AND an ending that absolutely wrecked me
Seriously. That cliffhanger?? Why. How. I screamed.
If you're into: 🐉 Dragons 🧟♂️ Zombies 🫂 Found family 💔 Romantic tension 🔥 A dash of spice 😱 Twist endings that leave you clawing for the sequel
Then Firebond will light you up in all the best ways. I immediately dove into Bloodbond and I'm still not over it.
To say my mouth dropped is a understatement. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and instantly had to make sure there was another one coming because um, after you listen/read this one, you are going to be wanting the next one too! The enemies to lovers, banter was so good, always makes a book more fun in my opinion! Check it out!
