Rate this book
The Martians are back, and this time they’ve landed right in the heart of Autumnville! In “Monsters and Martians”, Ziblo, Gloop, Jib, and Floob set out to explore another curious Earth Halloween. What starts as a mission to understand pumpkin carving, spooky costumes, and trick-or-treating quickly turns into a whirlwind of playful mischief and unexpected surprises. The friendly aliens may not know the difference between a jack-o’-lantern and a glowing Martian orb, but they’re ready to dive headfirst into the fun.

From bobbing for apples to getting lost in a haunted corn maze, the Martians embrace every quirky Earth custom with their usual wide-eyed enthusiasm. Along the way, they befriend the townspeople of Autumnville, who can’t help but laugh and cheer at the Martians’ unique take on Halloween. As the festivities unfold, the Martians add their own touch of extraterrestrial flair—whether it’s lighting up a pumpkin patch parade or turning a spooky dance party into an out-of-this-world rave.

But as the night draws to a close and Halloween comes to an end, the Martians must once again bid farewell to their newfound Earth friends. With candy-filled baskets and memories of glowing pumpkins and playful frights, they take off into the starry sky, leaving behind a little Martian magic in Autumnville. This Halloween, get ready for a holiday adventure that’s truly out of this world!

Since I found out that this author has offered his books for free since this summer on a rotating basis and with a myriad of tastes I have been hooked. And what makes it an interesting adventure is just the variety of books he has.

This Martian Holiday series is clearly written with a higher elementary and middle school audience in mind. As a result this book is what I call part of my YA - Juvenile shelf, which means it is challenging as a chapter book although simply written, has an easy-to-follow plot and some brightly colored illustrations.

The book although in a series doesn't quite suggest which book comes first although I have the feeling it should be this one. As a result I have to say that it does work as a nice standalone for those looking for a holiday-themed.

Monsters and Martians is about a group of Martians (the number seems to fluctuate a bit here and there, especially in the illustrations but it feels like there should be four main alien characters) who after spying on Earthlings choose to visit to see what Halloween is all about. Over a course of three adventure-packed days, they not only learn but also help to leave their own mark on the holiday

Samuel makes sure to make bold mostly words that can be taken to describe the day thus allowing readers to add their own style of reading it as such and it is fun to see just how fun yet confusing some of our special days may be to those who have never participated in them.

The illustrations were cute but probably caused me more grief with this book. Small details like the shape of Martian heads always seemed to be changing or the amount of Martians or even costumes. There is one with a vampire cat costume I believe, which would been cool, that wasn't in the book and the Franken Martian was meant to have a jack-o'-lantern shirt but was shown instead as an orange wife-beater.

As a result the book was cute and a bit fun but not for an OCD-detailed person like myself.

Cute Halloween Book

Cute little Halloween chapter book for children. I can't wait to read more holiday fun (if he continues this series), and revisit the 2 books already available.

I also can't wait to read the rest of his books, and revisit some from time-to-time as well. He has a good variety of genres he has published, and I can't wait to see what else he has in store for us!
