Mayor of Turtle Town is a hodgepodge of humorous essays, short stories, and uncategorizable material. Within its pages you will find insights into the mysteries of middle age, opinions about the state of modern movies, self-indulgent musings on the difficulties of writing, a holiday-themed tale of undead romance, and so much more.
The miscellany mentioned in the subtitle is a double handful of goofy essays, parodies, and humorous stories. Quite a few of them must have been inspired by the author's experiences as a writer. "Dad Writes a Book," for example. Also "Romance Novel," "Characters," "Cold October Morning," and "The Only Remaining Piece of an Epic Saga." Among other aspects of the writing life, they poke fun at writer's block, epic fantasy, and the problem of characters in need of a plot. The pieces I enjoyed the most are two short stories. "The Dead Life" is a humorous zombie romance and "My Dad's Tank" is a heartwarming (but goofy) story about a father-son relationship. Anyone (especially writers) in need of a change from grim reality or a overly earnest fiction would enjoy this book.
