This book contains Theodore Payne's earlier memoir, *Life on the Modjeska Ranch in the Gay Nineties* (long out of print) plus new memoirs never before published. These are the only writings by this pioneering plantsman currently in print.
I recently visited the Modjeska House, which is only a few miles from my home and came across a lot of interesting history from the late 1800s, including this book. Theodore Payne was a gardener on the Modjeska ranch and the book shares many of his stories from this point in history. He lived on the ranch in the 1890s and then went on to set up his own nursery in Los Angeles. Interesting history of the area!
If your interest lies either in history of Los Angeles at the turn of the previous century or in native plants and gardening, you'll enjoy this book. Much of it is from Theodore Payne's diaries.
