A Purr-fect Relic Cozy Mystery #4

Crime and Cat-astrophes

Rate this book
Did the professor get what he deserved, or is murder on the prowl in small-town California?

As a late-summer heat wave scorches the sleepy town of Citrus Grove, the suspicious death of a notoriously unpopular professor puts Rebecca and her talking cat, Aneksi, hot on the trail of another cursed artifact and a killer.

Police Detective Nick Devon, her dashing new flame, is following the rulebook in his investigation, but the Cuthbert Exotic Antiques manager is trusting her instincts as she follows the clues. With her grandfather distracted by an unexpected visitor—who may not be what he seems—and Aneksi rekindling a bond with a long-lost sibling, Rebecca knows she’s on her own to search for the ancient scepter that may hold the key to the dead professor’s medical miracle…and the reason behind his demise.

In this twisty tale of hidden motives, intensifying danger, and a dash of magic, Rebecca must rely on her wits—and, hopefully, Aneksi’s sharp claws—to solve the case before she becomes the cunning murderer’s next victim.

Once again DeAnna has left me wanting more and wanting to throw my computer because that cliffhanger was uncool, WTF. I couldn't stop reading, finished this in one sitting. I can't wait for the next book which I know is going to be awhile till it comes out.

Aneksi and Khepeset together had me cracking up because it's such a realistic image of cats but also siblings, was a good choice to add her into the mix.

Once again the mystery of who dun it was hard for me to figure out even though it was seriously right there in front of my face the whole time.

After moving from Elk Pass, Montana, to sunny Citrus Grove, California, Rebecca Cuthbert's life takes a new turn. It's hard to know what to expect when you've never met your grandfather, but his invitation is a welcome respite following the loss of her parents. Now an integral part of Cuthbert Exotic Antiques, Rebecca plays a crucial role in helping her grandfather recover cursed Egyptian artifacts that were stolen by a former employee. The latest opportunity involves the recovery of Nehebkau's scepter, which arises in the wake of another crime. As anxiety levels rise, the unexpected arrival of her grandfather's cousin—who hasn't been seen in 50 years—adds to the stress. With no advance notice, it's difficult to determine whether his motives are as innocent as he claims.

This cozy mystery series highlights the special bond between a grandfather and a granddaughter, along with their intriguing business. As Rebecca settles into Citrus Grove, she forms a delightful friendship with Luna, navigates a budding relationship with Police Detective Nick Devon, and finds a loyal companion in an adorable cat named Aneksi. With his magical abilities, Aneksi becomes Rebecca's trusted sidekick, bringing a touch of amusement and entertainment to her sleuthing adventures. Aneksi also has a relative visiting; her sister, Khepeset, is another charming addition to the mix.

Thank you to DeAnna Drake, Tule Publishing Group, and Booksprout for the opportunity to read an eARC of this book.

Another day another relic to hunt oh and then there’s the pesky business of a visiting cousin too. Rebecca and her grandfather Stirling are back at it again this time hunting a staff that’s supposed to heal. As the cats would tell you the hexes take far more than they give. So we are caught up again in a twisty hunt with plenty of suspicious behaviors and a friend who’s livelihood is on the line. Best get to it!
I really love these books! I’m a huge fan of all things Ancient Egyptian so the relics and of course the kitties are perfect parts of the stories for me. I really like the bond that continues to grow between Rebecca and her grandfather. The people are every bit as quirky as you would expect for a small town which makes for great background. Fun, funny and lighthearted mystery with a dash of history and a hint of magic.

The book is a very easy-breezy read, very light, does not burden the reader with any low feelings.
It's upbeat, light-spirited & flowing.
Apart from a fantasy & a detective story, "Crime and Cat-astrophes" is also a “move on - move forward” book.

That said, Stuff keeps happening … but it's not good sleuthing, The detective work of the detective novel is extremely all over the place.
All that Rebecca keeps doing is exclaiming how she doesn't have proof.

I was disappointed that there was not more about the artifact, & about the curse… there is so much scope here! History… social arrangements of the Egyptian society at that time… mythology… script… design elements… jewelry design … ancient rumours... & modern urban legends… how Cleopatra came to possess these… how Stirling's grandfather got to those... the supernatural kittens narrating some anecdotes from their long existence… The book holds together well, but could have been much "more" … There's a lot of potential in the basic premise.

This book is very clean & optimistic,....& fun! & I will easily share it with my teenage daughter.

Crime and Cat-astrophes is the fourth book in DeAnna Drake’s wonderful series, A Purr-fect Relic Cozy Mystery. The book is well written with lots of sweet moments, suspense and magic. I have read all the previous books but this could be read as a stand alone as the author does a great job in explaining past events. The book’s main characters include Rebecca Cuthbert, her grandfather Stirling, her special talking cat Aneksi, and Detective Nick Devon.

As the book opens, Sterling tells Rebecca that his cousin has arrived from England that he hasn’t seen in 50 years. They go to the diner with him for breakfast. There is a table filled with a professor and some students. The professor has some issues with others there and goes to the rest room to clean up after a root beer was dumped on him. As he exits, he grabs his chest and falls. Nick and the police officers show up to interview the people in the diner and examine the body. He is declared dead and speculation is he was poisoned. Professor Omar that was in the previous books is also present at the diner with the others from the college. They are from different departments.

In the previous book we learned that Aneksi has a sister who has the same powers she does. She lives with the grandmother of Rebecca’s friend Luna. Rebecca has the two sister cats with her so they can be reunited after such a long time. When they see Rebecca they can tell she had been in the presence of one of the missing hexes, an ancient scepter. They warn her of its evil characteristics. She believes that the professor had it and the person with it now killed the professor to get it. Of course Nick tells her to leave the murder to the police but he is unaware of the scepter and the powers it has. She is also keeping another secret from him, she has registered for a night class. Her ex had discouraged her from taking classes and she doesn’t want to be in another situation where her boyfriend does that. So throughout the book, the two of them have uncomfortable conversations and encounters.

Rebecca and Sterling aren’t sure who has killed the professor but they try to rule out his cousin and Professor Omar by asking questions and spying on them. They aren’t sure why the cousin is in town and what his are intentions either. They follow the two around and see where they go. They also are hiding the fact that the cats talk and there is a stash of ancient artifacts in the basement below the store. The story has lots of suspenseful moments, some cute interactions with the sister cats and some fun moments when they are taste testing new cupcakes for the bakery. There is some angst between Nick and Rebecca as well. The mystery of who killed the professor was well done. I was totally surprised by the killer. This is another 5 star book by DeAnna that I highly recommend.

I was fortunate to receive this ARC from Tule Publishing in exchange for my honest review.

CRIME AND CAT-ASTROPHES is the fourth installment in DeAnna Drake's "A Purr-fect Relic Cozy Mystery" series. This is another fun plot with great characters, humor, and some unexpected twists and turns make this an entertaining paranormal mystery. The star of the series is ANEKSI. Aneksi was Cleopatra’s cat before being cursed into a statuette. In "Paws, Claws, and Curses" her statuette was broken, releasing her from the curse and saving Rebecca's life.

Phineas Cuthbert is unexpectedly visiting Stirling for the first time in fifty years. Khepeset, Aneksi's sister is also visiting. Their first meeting since Cleopatra’s temple and things may just get a little wild with these two long awaited visitors. Could both visitors have hidden agendas?

While at lunch at Malone’s Diner, when a a man drops dead and senior Malone is the main suspect. When Rebecca gets home, both Aneksi and Khepeset smell the deadly hex of Nehebkau’s Scepter. Now it's up to Rebecca and her grandfather to find the scepter before it causes more damage or some unscrupulous person gains possession of it. But life is busy, Rebecca's romance with Nick may be ending, her grandfather's estranged cousin's visit and  two rambunctious magical cats are stirring up trouble. And now, a hexed artifact so dangerous that even Cleopatra locked it  away. But now it's loose in Citrus Grove already causing disaster.

This is a fun murder mystery with the twist of recovering cursed artifacts before they cause damage oreven death. Be prepared as Aneksi and her sister Khepeset help to the find the hexed artifact.

Now, to get ready for another murder  and a missing cursed artifact in the next book in the series.

I enjoyed this book. This is the first book in this series that I have read but it won't be my last, even joining the series at book four it was easy to follow along and I never felt confused having missed the previous books. You also didn't need a big Egyptian understanding or background to enjoy either, which is a plus because I know next to nothing about the subject. I am not always a fan of talking animals, especially if there is no good explanation for it but some how it seemed to work for this series and added a fun and unusual element to the story. I liked the characters, although Hank's plight with his dad tugged at my heart and the cousin's motives kept me weary throughout. The cats were some fun entertainment with there antics and bickering. I had guessed who the killer was despite the other suspects being better options. I look forward to seeing how things with the mysterious cousin develop in the next book.
When a professor who miraculously recovers from an illness suddenly dies in her friends diner, Rebecca can't help but think a cursed artefact is involved. When it turns out the man died from poison, Rebecca's boyfriend closes down the diner while they investigate and take a closer look at the owner. With her talking cat busy getting to know a long lost sibling and her grandfather fretting over the reappearance of a cousin he hasn't seen in fifty years, it's up to Rebecca to learn everything she can about the professor and if he did come into contact with an artefact where it is now. Can she find it before anybody else gets hurt?

Crime and Cat-astrophes by DeAnna Drake is another delightful blend of mystery, magic, and feline wit, making it a must-read for cozy mystery lovers who enjoy a side of supernatural charm. With the sleepy town of Citrus Grove sizzling under a late-summer heatwave, Rebecca and her ever-opinionated talking cat, Aneksi, find themselves in the middle of another artifact-fueled whodunit.

What makes this book so much fun is the perfect balance of mystery, humor, and magical intrigue. The death of an infamously disliked professor sparks plenty of suspicion, but the real intrigue lies in the ancient cursed scepter linked to his untimely demise. I loved watching Rebecca go head-to-head with Detective Nick Devon—her dashing, by-the-book beau—as she follows her own instincts rather than police protocol. Their growing romantic tension adds just the right amount of heat to the already suspenseful plot!

Of course, Aneksi steals the show as always. Her sharp tongue (and sharp claws!) keep Rebecca on her toes, and the introduction of her long-lost sibling adds a heartwarming and unexpected twist. Throw in a mysterious visitor keeping Rebecca’s grandfather occupied, and you have a fast-paced, twisty mystery with just the right amount of danger and enchantment.

With hidden motives, magical relics, and a murderer lurking in the shadows, Crime and Cat-astrophes delivers another purr-fectly satisfying read. If you love charming sleuths, witty feline companions, and artifacts with a deadly history, this book is a fantastic addition to your cozy mystery collection! Can’t wait for the next one!

🐾✨🔍 – A spellbinding mystery with nine lives worth of twists!.

Rebecca arranges for a play date between her magical kitty Aneski and Aneski’s sister, Khepeset. Her grandfather, Sterling, receives word of a long lost relative of his own in town. Leaving the kitties on their own, they meet Phineas at Hank’s diner. They observe a professor and group of students celebrating the professor’s miraculous recovery from a debilitating illness, and an altercation between the professor and Hank’s father. Shortly after, the professor falls dead and poison is suspected. However, thanks to Aneski’s supernatural powers, Rebecca realizes a cursed artifact is in play. Determined to track it down, she puts her relationship with Detective Nick in jeopardy.

As a huge fan of tv show, Warehouse 13, I love the concept of tracking down cursed artifacts. With this being the 4th installment in the series, the reader is witness to Rebecca’s character growth and her evolving relationships with the citizens of Citrus Grove. It is admirable that she takes steps towards further education, and understandable that she would hide that from Nick due to her ex’s behavior. Aneski is adorable and steals every scene she’s in. The sibling shenanigans were definitely laugh out loud moments and I hope Kheppi returns in future books. With plenty of morally questionable characters and red herrings, the mystery kept me guessing and I admit to be surprised by the perpetrator. The teaser at the end has me greatly anticipating the next book. Well done, Ms. Drake.

"Crime and Cat-astrophes" is another winner from DeAnna Drake. Although part of a series, it can also be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel, thanks to the "Meet Rebecca Cuthbert" prologue.
I was delighted to reunite with Rebecca and the adorable Aneksi. The addition of Aneksi's sister only added to the charm. Immortal, talking cats who knew Cleopatra - who better to assist in recovering cursed Egyptian artifacts? Not only do they add a layer of cuteness, but without their alter egos, Rebecca might never have uncovered the murderer without risking her own life.
DeAnna Drake consistently writes to a high standard, ensuring smooth transitions from one book to the next. Her plots are well-structured and packed with intrigue, balancing dialogue and narrative perfectly. Once again, I was left guessing the murderer's identity until the very end. My suspicions about another character's sincerity have primed me for the next installment in the series.
DeAnna Drake masterfully interweaves relationship subplots that add depth and realism to the story. We gain more insight into Rebecca's relationship with her grandfather, Stirling, as well as her connections with her friend, Luna, and her boyfriend, Nick.
The only downside to this series is that I devour each book too quickly, leaving me eagerly awaiting the next one!

One of the best paranormal cosy mysteries I’ve followed. I eagerly wait for each adventure to be published. Highly recommend reading the whole series although there’s enough backstory for each to be a standalone book.
Rebecca Cuthbert would love a drama free life but when your cat, Aneksi, the immortal cat of Cleopatra and your grandfather is a guardian of cursed artifacts, don’t count on peaceful. Since a former manager stole some of the cursed artifacts, tracking them down has been the Cuthbert’s responsibility. Grandfather Sterling is reluctant to talk about his own family but when his estranged brother Phineas, shows up, there's another mystery brewing. Overheard while eating at the local restaurant that a terminally ill professor is now well again thanks to his ‘breakthrough’ discovery, Rebecca becomes suspicious. After some sleuthing, Aneksi confirms it’s a cursed artifact that restores health but hastens death. But the professor is murdered and the artifact stolen. Desperate to retrieve the artifact and keep it from a very curious Phineas and dodge her policeman beau, Rebecca, Anekski and Klepeset, long lost kitty sister of Anekski follow a convoluted and dangerous path to find the artifact, murderer and discover Phineas’ secret before her beloved grandfather gets hurt by his brother yet again.

Rebecca Cuthbert and her grandfather, Stirling, owner of Cuthbert’s Exotic Antiques are surviving the scorching heat wave in Citrus Grove, when Stirling receives a text from his cousin, Phineas, who Stirling hasn't seen or heard from in fifty years.
Joining Phineas at Malone’s Diner for breakfast, Rebecca and her grandfather aren't sure what to expect from the meeting and are curious about why Phineas has appeared after so long, but they try to make the best of it.
Also at the diner is a group of students that are celebrating the return of a beloved professor who has made a miraculous recovery from a horrible illness.
The celebration ends suddenly when the professor drops dead in the diner.
The suspicious death puts Rebecca and her talking feline companion, Aneksi, on the trail of a cursed artifact and a killer.
This book is another winner by Deanna Drake! It's the fourth book in the series, but can be read alone. The storyline kept me engaged, as did all the others in the series.
After all, who doesn't like talking cats and cursed artifacts?
I highly recommend this book and this series!

This story reads a bit like a unique take on Warehouse 13. There are dangerous artifacts being exploited in the real world and it is up to Rebecca with her cat Aneksi to save the future victims. Aneksi and to a lesser extent her sister are the true stars in this book. The legend and backstory for the "cats" is unique and interesting and enhances to overall book. The mystery, a death tied to an artifact, is interesting and one that touched the town not so much because of the victim but because of the artifacts potential for crushing hope. The side characters were interesting and make great compliments to Rebecca. Her boyfriend Nick being a copy who knows she is in the middle of solving things causes problems in their relationship.
Aneksi and her sister truly helped save the day and Rebecca.
As is my normal, I jumped into a series already in progress but after reading this book went back for me. I totally enjoyed this and can't wait to see what other troubles the artifacts cause and what our little furball does to help.

this is book 4 in the Purr-fect Relic Cozy series. I enjoy this light hearted series with talking cats. In this book we get introduced to Aneksi's sister.
As a late-summer heat wave scorches the sleepy town of Citrus Grove, the suspicious death of a notoriously unpopular professor puts Rebecca and her talking cat, Aneksi, hot on the trail of another cursed artifact and a killer.

This is the 4th book in the series and it is totally amazing. Each book gets better and better than the one before! In this book, has Rebecca and her grandfather Sterling searching for the cursed Nehebkau's scepter, said to heal which was stolen a long time ago from Sterling's shop, Cuthbert Exotic Antiques which happened to show up due to a murder. Of course Rebecca and her magic cat, Aneksi and Aneski's sister, Khepeset investigate help investigate also with help from Rebecca's best friend, Luna even though Rebecca's budding relationship with Police Detective Nick Devon asks her to leave it to him. And we also have the unusual visit of Sterlings' cousin who he hadn't seen in 50 years, we are taken on a real roller coaster ride. I highly recommend this book which is a fantastic addition to the series. In fact, I recommend the entire series, it is fun, with mystery and humor in each book! I can't wait until the next book. Hurry please. I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

This fourth installment in the series continues to deliver charming cozy mystery vibes with a sprinkle of magic. The unique premise of cursed artifacts and immortal talking cats keeps things fresh and engaging, even as Rebecca’s tendency toward reckless decisions can be frustrating. Thankfully, her ever-reliable magical feline companion, Aneksi, and now Aneksi’s equally immortal sister, are on hand to save the day once again.

The mystery surrounding the suspicious death of an unpopular professor is well-paced, with enough twists and clues to keep readers guessing until the end. The romance subplot isn’t very romantic in this book, as Rebecca’s struggle to be open with Nick causes misunderstanding and a rift. The book ends more positively in that department, promising a move to more romance in future installments.

Overall, Crime and Cat-astrophes is another solid addition to the series—perfect for readers who enjoy cozy mysteries with a touch of the supernatural, a dash of romance, and plenty of feline charm.

This is book 4 in the series and I recommend reading in order. The backstory is mentioned but I think it’s helpful in knowing the relationship between the characters.

I did not solve the whodunnit. I didn’t even get how. So kudos to the author for stumping me. I was way off.

In this installment, we got a couple new characters. One was briefly introduced before, Aneksi’s sister. Aneksi is a talking cat who knew Cleopatra. Yes, that Cleopatra. Now we have her sister, who is incredibly sassy. The two together is a recipe for all kinds of craziness. Rebecca is going to have her hands full when they’re together.

The other character is Stirling’s cousin that he hasn’t seen in 50 years. Why is he here now? What is he up to? Good guy, bad guy? All those questions and more will be answered if you read this book.

In DeAnna’s Goodreads author bio, she writes:

“Are you looking for a break from the downer side of life? Me too! That’s why I write lighthearted cozy mysteries designed to lift your spirits while balancing the scales of justice, at least within the pages of my books.”

And my answer to that, especially lately is, 100% yes! And I’m happy to report that DeAnna delivers on her promise. This is lighthearted and cozy, with some adorable humor mixed throughout. Yes, yes, readers will have to suspend their disbelief, but that’s the whole reason why I read!

While this is book four in the series, I have no issues jumping in and I finished this in a day. (It’s just about 200 pages)

The setting of sunny Citrus Grove, California is one I’d love to escape to in real life, and I love the grandfather-granddaughter relationship. My personal favorite is Aneksi, with his magical abilities. I wish I could have a magical talking cat as a side-kick.

Cozy and sweet with just the right amount of mystery.

This was another great addition to the series! While it’s book four, it works perfectly fine as a standalone. I don’t think you’d have any trouble jumping into the series here.

Another Egyptian relic stolen from Grandpa Stirling’s collection pops up and causes trouble. Rebecca and the gang work together to get it back before it causes any more damage.

The mystery was really good. I never could figure out who the guilty party was. I kept jumping from suspect to suspect and was surprised by the final reveal.

I loved meeting Aneksi’s sister Khepeset and hope she makes an appearance in future books. They’re quite the duo!

This book was a ton of fun! I loved revisiting these characters and meeting some new ones too. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite cozy mystery series, and I can’t wait for more! Especially after that ending!

I received a copy of this book via BookSirens and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Now living in Citrus Cove and managing her grandfather’s quirky antique shop, Rebecca Cuthbert is happy. She has reconnected with her grandfather and discovered a magical and immortal talking cat, Aneski. When her grandfather is contacted by his estranged cousin there is tension between the two but they are soon temporarily sharing his apartment. While sharing a meal with her grandfather and newly discovered relative, a man in the next room suddenly dies. When Aneski tells her that the death was caused by a Hex Rebecca finds herself investigating even after she is told by the detective she is dating to leave the investigating to the police. This terrific and magical book kept me entertained and engaged from the first page to the last. This is my honest, voluntary of an advanced reader copy of this book.

Yes, you read that correctly. I finished this one in a day - a fun addition to this series, and a lighthearded read. I needed this and it was perfect. More Egyptian relic trouble, more talking cat and cats turning into tigers trouble. All the usual culprits in this wacky series. This time, the book ends on a bit of a cliff hanger, which I hate, but it does make one assume that another volume is in the works. Which is good news as I look forward to these quick and entertaining reads. As usual, the characters are believable, the dialogue is normal and not stilted or awkward and the setting is a town I'd like to live in. I would recommend this series - not as serious literature but as a pleasant diversion full of likable people.

I very much enjoyed this chapter in Rebecca and her cat Aneska's life. Aneska is reunited with her sister and the two are as mischievous as they are helpful. Her grandfather Sterling and she need to find another cursed artifact. This is what they do, collect them and keep them hidden away safely. Mid investigating, their world goes wild. Sterlings cousin Phineas, from England has arrived to visit. What makes this suspicious? The cousins have not talked at all to each other in 50 years! At their initial meeting, a celebration for a professor returning to his position after he supposedly overcame an incurable disease. For him, a trip to the men's room is what gets him. Who would want to poison the professor? Is it possible he has used the cursed artifact? More to the point, will Rebecca find it before anything can go wrong

Rebecca and her talking cat Aneski are on the trail. Speaking of hot her new flame Detective Nick Devon isn’t sharing with the pair of would be sleuths so what can they do? Beat him to the clues of course. Par for course ,of course as Rebecca sniffs out the clues. Grandfather Sterling is a forced to reckoned , then there’s her sister and her mister is coming undone with this one … Just why is cousin Phineas here and why now? Let’s hope the answer is a good one and doesn’t leave them asking more questions to root out the mystery. Great writing and good storytelling

Book four in this series, is another hunt for a cursed artifact from the secret vault in the antique shop owned by Rebecca’s grandfather, Stirling. A number of years ago, an assistant ran off after stealing some of the artifacts, which have yet to be recovered! This time the item is Nehebkau’s scepter, thought to have the ability to heal but also to hex! When Professor Plunkett claims to be working on a miracle cure that will “change everything we know about medical knowledge”, and then he mysteriously dies, they know he must have found Nehebkau’s septer! Crime and Cat-astrophes by DeAnna Drake is book four in the addictive Egyptian cat series titled A Purr-fect Relic Cozy Mystery. Aneksi is back with Khepeset so she is as aware of the ancient scepter being searched for in the beginning of this story. Once gain murder or death has happened so Rebecca is involved because of scepter Threat. Police Detective Nick Devon is quite capable of solving the crime and catching the guilty party, but Rebecca knows the snake wand must be contained. Once again solving this case isn’t easy, putting her in danger, but Aneksi comes through to help.

Crime and Cat-astrophes is a great solid mystery series with a touch of romance, not to be missed. Now I want an ancient talking cat by my side too.

A dead professor and an ancient cure or is it curse.
Rebecca Cuthbert and her Uncle Stirling meet their cousin Phineas at Malone's diner. A boisterous celebration at a nearby table takes a nasty turn when the guest of honor returns from the bathroom and dies. Rebecca's suspicious mind goes to the possibility of foul play and when they return home Aneksi, her immortal talking cat, tells her she has been exposed to one of the missing ancient artifacts that her and Stirling have been trying to recover. A great addition to this action packed series. I look forward to many more recovery missions for these characters.

Book 4 in this series is another quick-paced who-dun-it with another relic on the loose. Professor Plunkett from the local college is miraculously cured, while celebrating at the town diner he drops dead. With plenty of suspects and an intriguing storyline Rebecca is determined to find the culprit. Although not necessary I highly recommend reading the previous books to best understand Rebecca and her side kick Aneski. I loved the introduction of the new characters Stirling's cousin Phineas Culbertson and Aneski's sister Khepeset. The antics of the two "magical" cats added humor and a touch of fun to the mystery. We are left with an air of mystery surrounding Phineas and I am looking forward to see what Rebecca discovers.. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
